Our chat with Zachary — a general partner at CRV who has led the venture firm into bets on Twitter, Yammer and Udacity, among others — has been edited for length.

Part of the early team at PayPal, where he was COO for several years, Sacks went on to create a couple of other software companies, including the family history site Geni, which was snapped up for undisclosed terms by rival MyHeritage in 2012, and the workplace chat service Yammer, scooped up by Microsoft for $1.2 billion the very same year.

That's been both in terms of its own growth and in competition with other products on the market like Yammer from Microsoft (which is now downsizing a little by removing its Enterprise tier) and, potentially, Facebook at Work, which has yet to make a full launch out of closed beta but is apparently getting ready to make the leap in October.

Slack isn't operating alone in this space as it comes up against Microsoft Teams and Workplace by Facebook, among others, but it is clearly part of this new wave of enterprise communications tools that is picking up where players like Jive (which went public in 2011) and Yammer (which was sold to Microsoft in 2012 for $1.2 billion) have left off.

Microsoft has argued along similar lines before: When Microsoft Teams first launched in 2017, the company said that it was for the "inner loop" of people you work with every day, while Yammer — the Facebook-like news feed for the workplace that Microsoft acquired in 2012 — is for the "outer loop" of people you work with outside your own team.

Startups/products like Slack and Yammer have most definitely put the concept of workplace collaboration on the map as something that can be useful and well used in an office environment, a significant thing, since one of the big issues with a lot of enterprise software is simply getting people to — at best — actually engage with it and — at worst — not just develop longstanding grudges against it.

"One of the things we saw in early collaboration tools like Yammer or Salesforce Chatter was that after initial hype that we have a new tool and we don't have to do email, people eventually got resentful that these tools became one more feed you needed to pay attention to and take care of," Anshu Sharma, venture partner at Storm Ventures, one of Workato's investor's explained.

Its bets include the storage company Box (now public), the social networking company Yammer (sold for $1.2 billion to Microsoft in 2012) and Veeva Systems, the company that's generally known for its customer relations software for the life sciences and pharmaceutical industries, though envious investors recognize Veeva as the company that produced a more than 803x return for Emergence when it went public in 2013.

The person at Microsoft leading the charge on Slack was EVP of applications and services Qi Lu. Lu, according to his Microsoft executive profile page, oversees all productivity, communications, education, search and other information services at Microsoft, and he also "sets the vision, strategy and overall direction of the Applications and Services Group," including R&D for Microsoft Office, Office 0003, SharePoint, Exchange, Yammer, Lync, Skype, Bing, Bing Apps, MSN and the Advertising platforms and business group.
