It cannot have been easy for him, perpetually veering as he was between soupy nine-beers-at-a-wedding tears and livid, trembling rage depending upon the outcome of a given Red Sox home stand, and in some ways his life can be viewed as a triumph, if only because he's allowed to write in a major American city's newspaper and operate a motor vehicle despite being the way he is.

In seven chapters, Dombek turns over a topic that is big and slippery, trendy and hoary, thorny and funny: the charge of narcissism, as it appears in literature (Ovid, Freud) and the Literature (Alice Miller, Donald Winnicott, Otto Kernberg); on reality television (MTV's "My Super Sweet 16") and the internet (soupy self-help sites); and within the life of the author, though here she is careful, perhaps exceedingly so.

There is Can in 1975 playing "Vernal Equinox" on The Old Grey Whistle Test, Czukay looking like David Crosby dressed as a punk rock Han Solo anchoring the soupy fusion with his bass and there he is, two years later on Top of the Pops, in canary yellow pants and a baseball jersey playing an upright bass buttressing Can's disco hit "I Want More," that was, like lots of smarmy dance, thing that both did the job and commented on doing the job, a commercial song about commercials and never-ending desire and thirst ("I want more and more and more and more and more") that also really, truly, unabashedly goes.

Executed in the style of travel postcards or advertisements, three murals depict local cultural icons and symbols: in "Greetings from Detroit," the Detroit skyline (with the monument "The Spirit of Detroit," 23, by sculptor Marshall Fredericks at the center) is lined with musicians including The Stooges and Sun Ra, both significant influences on the artists; in "The Heart of Detroit by Moonlight," the proto-punk band, the MC5, and the comedian Soupy Sales are juxtaposed with figures such as Alice Cooper and Lester Bangs, as well as the Vernor's gnome (the winking mascot of the Detroit-made ginger ale); and in "Amazing Freaks of the Motor City," White Panther Party founder John Sinclair stands in front of a giant Uniroyal tire, which is located by the side of the I-94 freeway near Detroit.
