Any name rapper can hire a cadre of otiose guest producers and/or vocalists to weigh down their project; few can sound this weighed down, stunned, out of it, in the grain of the voice as well as the beats, what with all the hypnotic synth trickle and insinuatingly eerie keyboards and drippy, druggy hazy daze.

Art collector de Galbert helped melt my overly skeptical sangfroid by installing a sly selection of artworks dealing with the animal condition, including: rabbit slippers by Wim Delvoye, a drippy-gooey octopus by Thomas Feuerstein, a snake with legs by Joan Fontcuberta, and Meret Oppenheim's splendid "L'écureuil" (The Squirrel, 1969) that represented for me the reverse side of European Renaissance rationality.

Nishimura captures its plaintive expression of hot desire and soul-crushing disappointment in molten masses of red, orange, and yellow forms laced with shiny, drippy skeins of red paint in "Love in Vain V," and in the mostly blue-green "Love in Vain I" and the red, black, blue, and yellow "Love in Vain III," in swirling compositions of haunting beauty.

He pays particular attention to texture, evidenced by pieces like a drippy black-and-white Amazonian vessel by the Italian designer Gaetano Pesce that appears to be hard clay but is in fact a lightweight, rubbery resin, or a vase by the Californian designer Taylor Kibby made of patinated ceramic chain-link that folds in on itself and can be reshaped at will.

Photograph by Yudi Ela for The New Yorker As for me, I was eying the fat squares of drippy yellow tres-leches cake in plastic clamshells, each wearing a heavy crown of pink whipped-cream rosettes and jewelled with berries; the puff-pastry pastelitos , encasing guava paste, cream cheese, or beef picadillo; and the miniature tin cups of rice pudding, topped with cubed pineapple and a healthy sprinkle of cinnamon.

There is more: Oberhuber's enamel-on-wood-panel pictures consisting of simple mathematical calculations; assorted sculptures made of found and painted cardboard and other materials; an oil-on-canvas composition of bold, drippy, vertical lines, "Hommage à Willi Baumeister" ("Homage to Willi Baumeister," 1989), which honors a German modern artist who died in 1955; some mural-size, mixed-media-on-canvas, geometric abstractions, which Oberhuber showed in 1972 at the Venice Biennale (where, with Hans Hollein, he represented Austria); and a poster titled "Wir tragen diese Mode nicht, Österreichs Kleid, Waldheims Kleid" ("We Do Not Wear This Fashion, Austria's Clothes, Waldheim's Clothes").
