Carnegie Library (1902–1977) On March 4, 1902, the first public library, the Carnegie Library, opened on the site of the current Central Library. When the library opened, only the basement, the stacks, and the children's room were completed. The Carnegie Library remained the main library of the system for most of the century. Braille Institute's Library Services is the Southern California branch of the National Library Service of the Library of Congress. The Library freely provides over 1.2 million Braille texts, periodicals, and audio recordings for the public. Arabia Campus Library The Arabia Campus Library was officially known as Aalto University Library, Arabia and is located in Helsinki, on the Arabia Campus of the Aalto University. The Library first opened in 1875 starting as the library of the Finnish Society for Crafts and Design and its school. 1973-2009 the library served as a University of Art and Design Library. The library was known as the University of Art and Design Helsinki Library before the merger.
The Arabia Campus Library was part of the Aralis Library Center. The Aralis Library Center was a public library open to all, which also brought together the Helsinki City Library's Arabianranta Library and two other art libraries: the Cultural Library Services of the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences and the Pop & Jazz Conservatory Library. The Aralis Library Center was completed in two phases: the Art Libraries moved to new premises in June 2003 and the Arabianranta Library in December 2003. In 2001, the Easton Library joined the neighboring Allentown Public Library, Bethlehem Public Library, and Moravian College Library in order to create the Lehigh Valley Library System. This consortium serves roughly 660,000 people in the Lehigh Valley.

A September 2006 article in Library Journal titled, "Library 2.0: Service for the next-generation library," begins by expressing the benefit of Library 2.0 to library administrators and taxpayers as providing "more efficient ways of delivering services to achieve greater returns on financial investments." The article continued by asserting that the much discussed Library 2.0 is important for librarians as it may radically change our customer service and interaction. With Library 2.0, library services are frequently evaluated and updated to meet the changing needs of library users. Library 2.0 also calls for libraries to encourage user participation and feedback in the development and maintenance of library services.

The Lawrence Public Library is a public library located in Lawrence, Kansas. It serves the City of Lawrence, and, through its membership in the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS), all of the citizens of the NEKLS multi-county regional library system. The library was originally established as a subscription-based library in 1854, but changed to a free public library upon the donation of a new building by Andrew Carnegie in 1904. The Carnegie library was the main headquarters of the NEKLS and the main library in Lawrence until 1972 when a new modern library replaced it.
Downtown Bellingham's Carnegie library was demolished in the early 1950s Fairhaven Library, constructed in 1905, is still in service Bellingham Bay Public Library and Fairhaven Library were originally established separately in the early 1890s. Bellingham Bay Library opened on June 15, 1891, as a subscription library and became a free library in 1903. In 1906, the city of Bellingham received funds from the Carnegie Corporation for a permanent building, which was constructed in 1908 and used until 1951, when the current Central Branch library building was opened. The Fairhaven Library also began as a subscription library in 1890.
The Alachua County Library District traces its origins to 1905, when the Twentieth Century Club in Gainesville started a subscription library. The Gainesville Public Library, a subscription library operated by the Library Association, opened in 1906. The Twentieth Century Club donated the books from its subscription library, and the new library also received books from the library of the East Florida Seminary, which had been absorbed by the newly founded University of Florida. The Gainesville Public Library became a free library in 1918, supported by funds from city taxes from all residents, but it was available only to whites.

The library has a collection of more than 39,000 volumes which also include a small collection of conventional reference books. The library functions as a consortium of five separate units: the Central library, the Honours Seminar library, the Staff- room library, the Departmental library of Geography and the Departmental library of Botany. While all accredited users may access the Central library, access to the Honours Seminar library is restricted to the Honours students and teachers. The Purcellville Public Library is a county-owned public lending library. The Purcellville Public Library was founded in 1938 by Clarence Robey and Gertrude Robey. The library was designed by Delos H. Smith, and built in 1937. The Purcellville Library and its bookmobile service were some of the initial branches in the creation of the Loudoun County Public Library system, established in 1973, alongside the Sterling Public Library.

The library in 2010 The Old Colorado City Library is a currently operating branch library of the Pikes Peak Library District. It is housed in a 1904 Carnegie Library that has been in continuous service as a library since opening December 7, 1904. The library is located at 2418 West Pikes Peak Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80904, in the historic district of Old Colorado City. Current hours of operation, policies, and programming can be found through the Pikes Peak Library District website.
This building proved inadequate, so a new library building was built on the same location and opened on January 4, 1926. The cost of construction, about $8,000 to $9,000, was funded with donations from local citizens and the library club. The Hennepin County Library system took over the library in 1922, but the library club still owned the building and grounds. Eventually, the Hennepin County Library system built a larger, regional library in Crystal about a mile west of the Robbinsdale library.
There has been a public library in the centre of Cape Town since 1818 when the South African Public Library (SAPL) was established. This was a free library until 1829 when it became a subscription library. In 1952 the Cape Town City Library Service (CTLS) was established to create a free municipal library service for Cape Town. In December 1954, after negotiations, the CTLS took over the subscription library of the South African Public Library, buying the stock and renting the reading room.
The Bartow County Library System had its beginnings in 1896 as a library organization started by the Cherokee Women's Club of Bartow County. In 1903 a building was funded and constructed to be used as the library, and was located on Public Square. This first library was named the Mary Munford Memorial Library of the Cherokee Club after its first library chairman who passed away while the library was being built. In 1932 the library was made public to the citizens of Cartersville.

Bankstown was one of the first Metropolitan Councils to establish a free public library, with the opening of a children's library in 1946. The library was originally known as Bankstown Municipal Library, and when Sir Roden Cutler, the Governor of NSW, declared Bankstown a city in 1980 the library officially became known as Bankstown City Library. The original children's library was replaced by a full library service and the current building was opened in May 1983. In 2010, plans for a new library building were confirmed on the existing Bankstown Town Hall site and construction of a new library to be completed early 2014.
The Queens Public Library (QPL), also known as the Queens Borough Public Library and Queens Library (QL), is the public library for the borough of Queens, and one of three public library systems serving New York City. It is one of the largest library systems in the world by circulation, having loaned 13.5 million items in the 2015 fiscal year, and one of the largest in the country in terms of the size of its collection. According to its website, the library holds about 7.5 million items, of which 1.4 million are at its central library in Jamaica, Queens. It was named "2009 Library of the Year" by Library Journal.
The centerpiece of the library system is the Sterling Memorial Library, a Collegiate Gothic building constructed in 1931 and containing the main library offices, the university archives, a music library, and 3.5 million volumes. The library is also known for its major collection of rare books, housed primarily in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library as well as the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, the Lillian Goldman Law Library, and the Lewis Walpole Library in Farmington, Connecticut. The Harvard Library Leadership Team is responsible for planning, prioritizing and implementing joint library initiatives. The team works with the vice president for the Harvard Library to develop and implement library-wide strategy and policy approved by the Board in collaboration with other standing committees and working groups. Chaired by the vice president for the Harvard Library, the Team includes members of the library's senior management team, library directors from the ten professional schools and the Radcliffe Institute, the managing director of Library Technology Services (HUIT), the Harvard Library shared services heads, the Harvard Library Director of Communications, and the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Harvard Library.
When the Carnegie Library opened in 1902, blacks were excluded from the library. Activist W. E. B. Du Bois led an unsuccessful campaign for black representation and equal use of the library, or at the very least a branch library for blacks, but the library board rebuffed his efforts. Carnegie had offered funds for a black branch library, but the library system did not use the money until 1921 when Tommie Dora Barker, the Director of the Carnegie Library School, opened the Auburn Avenue Branch Library, the first branch library for blacks, in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood. During segregation two other libraries were opened for the use of blacks.
The lobby of the National Library The National Library of New Zealand was formed in 1965 when the Alexander Turnbull Library, the General Assembly Library, and the National Library Service were brought together by the National Library Act (1965). In 1980, the Archive of New Zealand Music was established at the suggestion of New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn. In 1985, the General Assembly Library separated from the National Library and is now part of the Parliamentary Service and known as the Parliamentary Library. Staff and collections from 14 different sites around Wellington were centralised in a new National Library building, officially opened in August 1987.

Central University Library of Iași The library in 2016 The Mihai Eminescu Central University Library of Iași () serves the University of Iași in Romania. The library was established on 8 November 1839 and opened on 23 November 1841, carrying on the tradition of the activity and fame of the old library of Academia Vasiliană, founded in 1640. Functioning closely with Academia Mihăileană, founded in 1835, it had the double character of a school library and a public library. In 1860, when the academy was transformed into the new University of Iași, the library became the Central University Library of Iași.

North City Library, Manchester, UK Didsbury Library There are 24 public libraries in Manchester, England, including the famous Central Library in St Peter’s Square. Central Library is closed for refurbishment, but will reopen on 22 March 2014. The oldest community library still in use is Levenshulme Library in South Manchester, built in 1903. Levenshulme Library is also a Carnegie library, having been built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who funded the building of over 2,500 libraries across the world.
The library's existence dates back to 1873, when the Ladies' Library Association formed in El Paso. The library was originally kept in a room of the Eagle Block Building; however, when that building burned down in 1894, the library was destroyed. Following the fire, the new library took on a temporary home while the Ladies' Library Association discussed finding a permanent building and giving the city control over the library. The city assumed ownership of the library in 1904 and approved a library tax the following year.
