Though Fromm was aware that some of his subordinates, most notably Claus von Stauffenberg, his chief of staff, were planning an assassination attempt against Adolf Hitler, he remained quiet and agreed to have a part in it in exchange for becoming a top official of the new government after the coup. However, Fromm did not have any direct involvement in the conspiracy. When the attempt to proceed with a mutiny on 15 July 1944 failed, he refused to have any further part in it. On 20 July, news broke that Hitler and several officers of the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces had become victims of an explosion in the German military's headquarters on the Eastern Front, the Wolfsschanze (Wolf's Lair), near Rastenburg, East Prussia (now Kętrzyn, Poland).

He was part of an era of students motivated to study international relations following World War II because, as he later said, "We thought that by studying international politics and foreign policy we might have a part in moving the world in happier directions." He was a research fellow at the Center of International Studies at Princeton University during 1953–54, a lecturer and research associate at Columbia University from 1954–57, and an assistant professor of international relations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during 1957–58, before coming to Columbia for good in 1958. He married the former Jane Pierce Metzger in 1951 (she had been a teacher of economics who co-authored the 1954 book The Impact of Strikes and would later serve as editor for some of the Institute of War and Peace Studies' published works). The couple raised two sons and lived in Leonia, New Jersey, a town where a number of other Columbia professors lived.

Gonzalo Fernández de Traba (died 1160) was a Galician nobleman and the head of the Traba family. He was the eldest son and successor of Fernando Pérez de Traba by his wife Sancha González. By 1 August 1150 Gonzalo had married a certain Elvira Rodríguez, a woman of unknown origins, with whom, on that date, he donated his portion of San Julián de Ezebreiro to the Cistercian monastery of Monfero.The text of the donation reads Ego Gundisalvus Fernandiz et coniux mea Geloria Roderiquiz, facimus textum firmitatis ut habeamus partem in prima resurrectione ("I Gonzalo Fernández and my wife Elvira Rodríguez, make this enduring text that we may have a part in the first resurrection"), quoted in José María Canal Sánchez-Pagín (1995), "La Casa de Haro en León y Castilla durante el siglo XII: nuevas conclusiones", Anuario de estudios medievales, 25:1, 14, who dates it to 1145 (Spanish era 1183) and on page 15 makes Elvira a daughter of Rodrigo Vélaz, same as Gonzalo's second wife.

Ambition, which drives some men into constructing great industries, was there the impulse to have a part in bringing that dominion to pass; and devotion to a purpose, which is the secret of success in commercial enterprise, was there manifest in the determination of those four thousand delegates thus expressed to make known to all the world "in this generation" the Good News.
