The assumptive world refers to a core belief system reflecting that individuals perceive the world as secure and fair. Janoff-Bulman (1992) identified three assumptions (e.g. the world as benevolent, meaningful, and worthy), which can be shattered by distortions in social behavior. In the context of BTT, violations perpetrated by caregivers or close relationships have been implicated to impair views of the assumptive world and contribute to avoidance of the trauma experienced.

Some have criticized Janoff- Bulman's theory of shattered assumptions. Mary Alice Mills from the University of Connecticut studied this theory. In her dissertation, she did not find a relationship between trauma and people's views regarding the meaningfulness and benevolence of the world. Additionally, Janoff-Bulman's theory hypothesizes that people generally start to create an assumptive world at an early age through positive interactions and healthy relationships with a caregiver.

In social psychology, shattered assumptions theory proposes that experiencing traumatic events can change how victims and survivors view themselves and the world. Specifically, the theory – developed by Ronnie Janoff-Bulman in 1992 – concerns the effect that negative events have on three inherent assumptions: overall benevolence of the world, meaningfulness of the world, and self worth. These fundamental beliefs are the bedrock of our conceptual system and are the assumptions we are least aware of and least likely to challenge. They constitute our "assumptive world," defined as "a strongly held set of assumptions about the world and the self which is confidently maintained and used as a means of recognizing, planning, and acting" by C. M. Parkes.

The documentary opens by depicting Norma Khouri, author of the book Forbidden Love, which is purportedly the true story of "Dalia" - a young Muslim woman in Jordan murdered by her family in an honor killing because of her affair with a Christian soldier - as a woman bravely exposing a brutal and true story. Her account is then challenged by multiple people, including Jordanian women Rana Husseini, a journalist for The Jordan Times and an expert in honor killings in Jordan; Dr. Amal A. Sabbagh, a member of the National Committee for Women in Jordan; and Australian journalist Malcolm Knox. Khouri's critics first take issue with her representations of Muslim women as victims with no control over their lives as being assumptive, unbased, and insulting to Arab Muslim women. The book is then challenged on the basis that many 'facts' in Khouri's story were asserted to be incorrect or unfounded, including statements about geography (such as the run of the Jordan River through Amman, and the countries bordering Jordan) and restrictions requiring women to wear the hijab and have a male escort when they travel outside the home (contrary to depictions of women walking unescorted and uncovered).
