PARIS An entirely bubble-wrapped room set the stage for Thom Browne's fall men's collection, in which he deconstructed the navy and gray tailoring that has defined his aesthetic, presenting a series of tromp l'oeil suit dresses and draped, gownlike bricolages of his suiting staples.
Click here to view original GIFWe really shouldn't have to say this, but the next time a massive storm churns up towering waves in the ocean, it's probably a good idea to head for cover, instead of suiting up and heading out for some death-defying windsurfing.
In fact, many of last year's most ubiquitous trends (extra-long sleeves, inventive shirting and suiting), are trickle-down effects of Porte's runway collections; the presence of his own pieces in street style and on celebrities is undeniable as well, because they are, in fact, everywhere.
Describing China's environmental standards as probably the "highest in the world", Frerot said he expected the country's waste crackdown to push the market towards companies offering thorough recycling services, suiting Veolia "compared to the small players which are just collecting and (doing) a bit of sorting".
But, he has earned the ire of many in his conservative Catholic homeland for what he looks like—his is covered head-to-toe in tattoos, including blackened eyeballs—as well as deliberately undergoing numerous surgical procedures to leave his face permanently scarred to his suiting.
In 1992, Donna Karan created a series of "In Women We Trust" ads featuring the model Rosemary McGrotha taking the oath of office, working behind her desk, and otherwise being a leaderlike working mother in double-breasted pinstriped skirt suiting, ropes of pearls and shirt sleeves.
On the Runway In recent years, the first day of the N.F.L. draft has turned into something of a fashion moment, with players (and their families) posing on the red carpet, often in tailored suiting, and "best and worst of the N.F.L. draft" fashion lists circulating online.
For 80 years, the family-owned business has outfitted lawyers, bankers, doctors, politicians and famous athletes, with all-American brands like Hickey-Freeman, groovy European labels like Pierre Cardin and Tiger of Sweden and lately high-end Italian suiting and sportswear from Brioni, Isaia and Brunello Cucinelli.
But there was also a doubling-down on sophisticatedly layered gray suiting, skirt-trousers perhaps too closely reminiscent of those produced by Jun Takahashi at Undercover and elegantly detailed blazers to counter the knock on Mr. Abloh that he is best sticking to graphics and hoodies.
A confused Kershaw — barred by management from even suiting up, so as not to tempt Manager Dave Roberts — stays in the clubhouse and plays M.L.B.: The Show on PlayStation, laboring through six and two-thirds virtual innings as Alex Wood and five relievers clinch the series. Oct.
From a studio in East London (long before the hipsters took over the neighborhood), Mr. Casely-Hayford developed a style, which he identified as "new conservative dressing," that was shown on the runways of London, Paris and Tokyo, and that pushed the accepted boundaries of formal suiting.

Matt Kemp grew up a fan of the Atlanta Braves during the team's glory days of winning five National League pennants and a World Series title in the 1990s, and the 31-year-old outfielder now is living a childhood dream of suiting up for his favorite team.
As his men and women swapped louche jackets and trousers in houndstooth of many sizes, lounge singer satins and sunburst brocade, he made the case for genderless suiting with grace but without compromise, positing the exchange not as a political statement about the refusal of labels, but as generosity.
And so at roughly the same time that meeting was taking place, the contestants were suiting up for the annual Show Us Your Shoes Parade, where the women ride on the tops of old convertibles along the boardwalk, decked out in elaborate costumes meant to honor their home state.
Alongside oversized suiting, yellow and red lug boots, and psychedelic checkerboard patterns was a fine-tuned selection of bib-like collars available in leather, quilted nylon, embroidered mesh, and denim worn over top of sweater dresses, paired with matching quilted coats, and secured underneath traditional collared button-downs.
The collection's assortment of delectable feather dresses, brightly-colored suiting, floral-applique colors, corduroys sweater combos reminiscent of middle school, and star-covered trench coats finished a captivating week of designers like Kerby Jean-Raymond and Christopher John Rogers showing that fashion is not just about wearing pretty clothing.
Monochrome, grays and beiges were the order of the day — drawing on the classic suiting and trench coats that the British brand was built on — while oversize rugby shirts, crystal-encrusted bonnets and shimmering pinstripes on tailoring offered a more playful side to Tisci's take on British culture.
So, kind of, was the collection, which was full of contradictory impulses and a frenetic undone-ness: slithery red and white and black pajama silks and nightgowns, sliced-up suiting, pixelated prints; and connected in odd ways by rows of rings and chain link harnesses, twists and turns.
Tech Fix When Sony releases its virtual-reality headset next week, you can live your childhood fantasy of donning the cape and cowl of a classic superhero in the video game Batman: Arkham VR. Sadly, suiting up in the virtual environment is just about the coolest thing you can do.
There was the Chinese silk pajama suiting of later years, now trimmed in ostrich feathers (almost everything, including shawls and shoes, was trimmed in feathers), along with jet-beaded satins, 1940s knickers and neat pale beige 1960s car coats and dresses, dangling giant gem-bedecked pendants and more of that marabou.
The totems of the line are still rooted in almost-classic suiting and shirting, but never without a discreet signifier of willful rebellion: a pinstripe button-down's sleeve's hidden slashes, a pair of navy wool schoolboy shorts piped with leopard print; pleated black pants at once inflated, cropped and tapered.
For over a decade, Mr. Browne has been praised as one of the United States' great design talents, forging a reputation and business on a bold and provocative aesthetic, as well as a sly sense of humor, highlighted by his signature suiting — slim, gray and shrunken, often with a cropped ankle.
And in 2005 he started his own label, beginning with a collection of unisex jackets, trousers, white shirting and bow ties (the latter is still a brand signature), while also creating custom-order suiting on the side for clients like Sofia Coppola and her husband, the Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars.
Also Jil Sander, where Rodolfo Paglialunga, in what was rumored to be his last collection for the brand, offered his inflationary boardroom suiting in black patent, cashmere and felt — though the proportions were so oversized, it often seemed as if the clothes were swallowing the body, instead of swaddling it.
Peloton classes are recorded in front of a live studio audience of riders Peloton classes are recorded in front of a live studio audience of riders The Shoes – Usually the activation energy to start a workout requires dragging yourself to the gym or suiting up to face the elements outside.
White paneled silk slips trimmed with whispers of black lace at Céline, scallop-edged organza shorts and chemise tops at Dior and a seductive mishmash of boudoir and boardroom in the form of peek-a-boo bralets and power suiting at Givenchy and Balenciaga — we are in an underwear-as-outerwear moment.
Karl Lagerfeld had recreated his ateliers, down to the rolls of fabric, dressmakers' dummies, patterns and pins, the better to demonstrate the reality — and human toil — behind the reconfigured tweed suiting (actually trompe l'oeil embroidery), shoulders extended and flattened into two dimensions without internal structure, and culottes swishing about midcalf, on his runway.
Central, the cluster of glass-and-metal skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island, is the city's traditional finance and banking neighborhood, so tailors there primarily cater to executives who want classic styles in top-end suiting materials from Ermenegildo Zegna, Loro Piana, Dormeuil or one of the many heritage woolen brands in Britain.
At Preen, the '70s film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's Don't Look Now was the collection's inspiration, and while flashes of the film's haunting red symbolism were seen throughout, it was the Donald Sutherland-esque suiting that we loved the most: think dagger collars and oversized lapels on suave three-piece get-ups.
Waight Keller's couture collections use finishes long associated with women's wear (sequins, delicate floral embroidery) that encourage men to experiment with new identities, and at the Row, the Olsen sisters are creating men's suiting so sublimely minimal it is almost self-effacing, as though its wearer has more cerebral concerns than tailoring.
With this collection, shown at Doubles, the supper club in the Sherry-Netherland, Mr. Maxwell has effectively seized the uptown ground once owned by Jason Wu, who seems to have entirely lost direction, detouring between striped cotton suiting here, haute bohemia there and a selection of Martha Graham-meets-Madame Grès dance dresses.
But just when we thought we'd have to enter into spring wearing the same sweater and jeans combination we've been donning all winter, & Other Stories did it again, this time, by announcing a 913-piece sale stacked with everything from zebra print slip skirts to oversized suiting — all of which are up to 50% off.
With the sounds of Weezer overhead, Abloh's message was clear: Despite the trend of men who wear suits to abuse their power, thus tainting the idea of classic suiting altogether and turning the look into something more like a wolf in sheep's clothing, it's nothing a bit of tsuzjing — and some loosening up — can't fix.
Following the success of her debut collection earlier this year, Palermo is back for fall with another installment of 23 versatile separates that range from $79 to $499 — and a lot of the cool-weather trends we've been keeping our eye on are represented (think ruffles, suiting, and, our personal favorite, track-pant style trousers).
Suiting was presented in a fashion that says anyone can wear one, so long as you fuck it up a bit and make it your own (perhaps as a subtle nod to resisting the status quo): There were also oversized pinstripe blazers, rainbow sweatsuits, and dress pants that featured varsity stripes down the sides.
Liquid striped men's wear suiting was paired with elongated chiffon shirts in a contrasting stripe left to flow out the back; white satin slip-dresses draped on one side to reveal a cowl lined in black; and pencil skirts slit to one thigh paired with bibbed tuxedo shirts winking sheer at the back and sides.
Eschewing his usual tripartite themes, Mr. Lauren built a tighter-than-usual collection — nominally Fall, Part 2, but effectively seasonless (can we all just forget the pointless meteorological nomenclature now?) — on the inspiration from an old Navajo blanket he had in his house, soignée city evening wear in fruity shades and Savile Row suiting.
He's an entrepreneur and he's the host of the podcast Suiting Up. I heard about him because both of my sons — actually, one of them is here, going to be on the show, Louie Swisher — told me all about him, and when I mentioned that you tweeted back at me, Paul, they went crazy.
Though many of the pieces are crafted by a family-owned tailoring company in Parma, Italy, and though there are sporty elements (an ivory cashmere polo shirt, a suede bomber jacket the color of wet sand), they don't fall neatly into either of the two major categories that define contemporary men's clothing: streetwear and suiting.
And that was classic men's suiting and schoolboy uniforms cut out and jigsawed back together, so a jacket dropped to the hips and swaddled the legs to become a skirt, shirts stretched long to the knees under trousers sliced flat to extend a frock coat and cable sweaters ballooned into dresses over crinolines and under tennis cardigans.
For enthusiastic dressers, like myself and the other members of the mid-219s blogging community, that also included mining the vast vocabulary of Comme — red tartan, polka dots, felt suiting, Doc Marten oxfords, too-short pants — and finding affordable substitutes in thrift stores, men's sections of big-box stores, and misspelled (but genuine) CDG originals on eBay.
The brand's newest collection for fall 2019 is made for business travelers and features machine-washable, wrinkle-resistant, packable suiting staples like the sleek, doubled-breasted Yan Jacket ($325) and the Doris Dress ($225) that's been treated with an anti-odor finish so you can wear it multiple times before needing to throw it in the wash.
And it has been the province of Thom Browne, who, 10 years after he first came to Europe to show his shrunken men's suiting at the Pitti trade show in Florence, doubled down on his twin trademarks (the prepster in the gray flannel suit; trompe l'oeil dressing) by creating a self-reflexive conversation between the two.
In May of last year, Hearst presented a small pre-fall men's collection of chunky speckled wool sweaters and slate gray tailoring, and in July, she followed with a 23-style resort offering of lightweight powder-blue and putty-colored suiting, as well as crew-neck knits in off-kilter pastel shades like faded butter yellow or dusty lilac.
At Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada may have eschewed her usual post-show press meet-and-greet-and-kiss-and-ruminate but her runway ruminated for her in a highly idiosyncratic game of silver screen dress-up: crushed silk sheaths in circus brights, taffeta poufs, 1940s suiting with skirts slit to the thigh; sheer slips dripping crystal drops.
While there's her breathtaking list of male clients (Johnny Depp, Chris Rock, Keith Richards, and the late Leonard Cohen), what we really love is the mark she's made on the face of women's fashion by powerfully suiting up many of young Hollywood's most empowered females — Ellen Page, Elle and Dakota Fanning, and Westworld's Evan Rachel Wood (batteries not included), to name a few.
Sporting details and materials were mixed with millennial business suiting: leggings worn under a double-breasted belted blazer; billowing nylon Wonder Woman coats trimmed in crystals; sheath dresses in primary shades shaped by ruched drawstring pulls into curvilinear forms, and black pantsuits (well, there had to be a few) sliced by a knife-edge curve of color from shoulder to thigh.
Mr. Crutchley's offerings included a collaboration with the French artist Lucien Murat, who painted his vision of a grotesque, bestial world on traditional tapestries that were finished into open-collar shirts and shorts for men and dresses for women; a partnership with a historic Yorkshire mill to create woven suiting, and prints made by the oldest kimono printer in Kyoto, Japan.
He did keep enough landmarks to summon the pop pleasure of familiarity, like the "ta-na-na" singalong in "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" (which also played up the intertwined guitars of Biodun Kuti and Mark Stewart) and the pristine guitar introduction to "Homeward Bound" (which, suiting a farewell tour, featured a video montage of Mr. Simon's half-century-plus career).
Better, really, to give in to the muted calm of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen at The Row, where every look seemed calculated to sooth the troubled soul: liquid layers of tactile suiting (turtlenecks and shirts and jackets and coats and swishy trousers) in gray, taupe, black and white, sometimes with the added protection of elbow-length gloves and a little knit hood.
At Etro, Veronica Etro said backstage before the show that she had been thinking about her family's recent 50th anniversary exhibition, and her own time as a student in London and the meaning of "timeless," and then proceeded to send out tapestry suiting and puffed-sleeve cocktail dressing, paisley robe coats and big 18th-century-style skirts — worn over hot pants.
With director Robert Schwentke returning to the helm, and a cast lead by Shailene Woodley suiting up for another sci-fi actioner where big ideas are often bottled down into resounding clichés, this handsomely made effects-driven vehicle offers more of the same and then some — a fact that will hardly bother fans who've already pledged their allegiance to the franchise, but won't convert any nonbelievers.
Mr. Vaccarello dove into the YSL of the 1980s for his introductory effort, eschewing the usual tropes of safari suiting, gypsies and Mondrian in favor of the big-shouldered, shirred, asymmetrical, metallic Saint Laurent of the later years (plus some Smokings, given a streetwise slant with the sleeves lopped off; transformed into a jumpsuit; or rendered in a slick, square-shouldered tuxedo over skintight denim).
Instead, they offer purple wide-legged cropped pants, '70s-inspired glen-plaid suiting, cutoff sweatpants and, of course, a selection of graphic tees that align more with street-kid misfits than the sun-bleached surfer dude — all of which is available at the pop-up shop that Token Surfboards introduced last night with a party and performance by the jazz revival band Onyx Collective.
The collection itself was something of a long-haul journey, with more than 200 looks, including urban daywear (diaphanous parkas, slouchy slacks, relaxed knits), elegant suiting, eye-popping nightclub neons (chartreuse yellow or hot pink biker jackets, miniskirts and hot pants, and sequins by the truckload), and a finale of Emporio-branded bustier dresses, sheer blazers and blouses, scattered with the letters and finished with tassels.
Instead, now there is the designer as welcoming host, like Joseph Altuzarra, who — in the most sophisticated and fully realized collection he has made in seasons — offered a peek into his own family history with soignée 1940s suiting, all portrait necklines and narrow skirts, waists caught by the thinnest of chains, inspired by treasures found in his grandmother's trunk and grounded by feather-tufted bedroom slippers.
Another is basing the cut of a simple blouse or pair of trousers or lace dress on the circle, as Ms. McCartney did in scalloped cottons that curved around the arms and legs, potentially unforgiving volumes she aerates with ease, mixed in with cool safari suiting and loose halter dresses covered in photographic flower field prints she shot during on a bike ride in the countryside.
While suiting is one of the most well-known aspects of the furry fandom, FurryCons are about moreIn addition to getting orders online, Gill makes a large chunk of their earnings from costumes during FurryCons, or giant conventions where furries flock to meet fellow members of the fandom, honor important people in the community, and buy artwork and pieces for their fur suits from vendors like Gill.
First, François Fillon, the embattled conservative candidate for president of France, currently lagging in third place and charged on Tuesday with embezzlement, was accused by Le Journal du Dimanche of having received "presents" from an unidentified friend in the form of 2363,2406 euros (about $2800,21) in custom suiting from Arnys, the tailor that LVMH acquired in 2200 to merge with Berluti, its men's wear label.
If the ''power suit'' circa Tom Ford at Gucci was lean and mean and made a gal look like a neo-noir detective, the new or alternative suiting is versatile and mismatched, the look of a superhero halfway through a costume change: satin blazers with cargo pants in monochrome (Ford, at his namesake label), deconstructed tweeds with raw-edged leather and biker boots (Lanvin) or Converse and sequins (Marc Jacobs).
Even Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino, who averred backstage before the show that "I don't think fashion has to be a manifesto," put more black in his show than he had ever before (probably more than 70 percent of the clothes were black or navy or very dark gray) — sheer shirts and easy suiting and elegant sheaths, dresses and coats brightened by a single, strategically placed, brightly colored bloom.
Mr. Kogi chose pieces from designers less known outside of Japan, including suiting by Auralee (he was wearing it himself, underneath a white leather Louis Vuitton harness as he showed visitors through the offerings); T-shirts by Midorikawa with stipple portraits of the minimalist avant-garde composer John Cage; and sweatshirts from Mr. Kogi's own Poggy the Man collection embroidered with the letters L-O-V-E in a familiar-but-unplaceable bubbled logo.
It proved a fortuitous frame for their collection, as attenuated of line and serene of shade as always, but with a certain new generosity of proportion and nod to modernity: coats pulled off the shoulder and belted to blouse, like a gown, at the back; halter jumpsuits tied in a rope bow on one shoulder with a palazzo width (and no waist); space-age suiting made from white paper, and crocheted chain mail evening hoodies poured over silk.
And though Karl Lagerfeld constructed a mirrored Art Deco salon complete with cream suede sofas and calla lilies for Chanel, transposing rooms at 31 Rue Cambon to the echoing environs of the Grand Palais, what was most notable was not the surround, but rather the way the silhouette had been altered by adding a plain leather belt, cinched just at the lower ribs, to everything from bouclé suiting to crystalline slips finished in a flounce of feathers.
At Off-White, it meant Hadids of all ages (Bella and Gigi and mother Yolanda) plus other famous models (Karlie Kloss and Alek Wek and Carolyn Murphy) in a bit of this, a bit of that: slick sapphire-and-white cow-print pencil skirts and trench coats; hallucinogenic houndstooth-check suiting; mint green leather jumpsuits and amethyst knits; billowing tulle ball gowns spliced on top with Arc'teryx technical jackets, the taffeta of the outdoor rec world.
Each of those looks had its own force and fallout: from the mod of 1966 to the space-age metallics of "Space Oddity" in 1969; the spike-haired, cosmetically enhanced, body-flaunting avant-garde ambiguity of Ziggy Stardust; the disruptive decadence of Aladdin Sane and Halloween Jack; the knife-edge monochromatic suiting of the Thin White Duke; the pleated, pastel tailoring of the Serious Moonlight tour; the Alexander McQueen shredded Union Jack historicism of "Earthling" (1997), and so on and on.
There were also slogans on clothing like — "Stop Calling 911 on the Culture," mixed among the men's and women's suiting — broad-shouldered jackets cropped and nipped in at the waist over languid trousers — the long, swishy silk shirts atop skinny pants; quilted satin duvet skirts; and tank dresses encrusted in a micro-mosaic of crystals picking out the portrait of a father cradling his newborn child, all of it imbued with the ease of sweats and the soaring dreams of gospel.
As did the confusion of a collection that added many pointless flaps and straps to otherwise elegant tailoring, mixed an old newspaper comic strip ("Little Nemo in Slumberland," from 1905) with pajama suiting (for men) and Fortuny pleats (for women), threw in some gingham and potholder weaves, an old Lanvin cartoon print that apparently depicted bathers but looked like an unexpected takeoff on a Kama Sutra plate, hairy sneakers and metallic "Pharoah Loafers" (don't ask), and then culminated in lovely short Grecian gowns, glimmering with gold.
That may not seem like a big thing, but abandoning the jacket, even in 2017, is a striking choice on a professional podium, one that aligns Ms. Sanders more with the sartorial camp of Ivanka Trump and Kellyanne Conway than with her predecessors: Dee Dee Myers, a press secretary during the Clinton administration who was known for her miniskirts and bright jackets, and Ms. Perino, who tended toward Chanel-esque suiting (or even the fictional press secretary C. J. Cregg on "The West Wing," whom the costume designer Lyn Paolo dressed in Calvin Klein and Armani suits).
