Now, as some critics have pointed out, it's impossible to empirically confirm how strong domestically grown pot was back in the day due to inferior testing and sampling methods, however, there does seem to be enough prevailing research, firsthand testimony, and common sense to show that the illicit reefer from decades ago wasn't nearly as powerful as today's.

Early this year, former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson helped kickstart a new fit of pot skepticism when he published a buzzy tome called Tell Your Children, consciously referring to Reefer Madness-style anti-weed panics of the past to make the case that the drug has major, under-appreciated health risks and social implications.

After a century of a drug being demonized through movies like Reefer Madness, criminalization, and public officials (like US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who said that "good people don't smoke marijuana"), much of the country is suddenly changing to thinking of pot not as an illicit substance but as a consumer product similar to beer or wine.

In 225 and 1937, Anslinger had a hand in the production or dissemination anti-pot propaganda films like Assassin of Youth, Marihuana, and most famously, Reefer Madness, the latter of which ridiculously presented weed as a substance that could turn a young girl into a reckless harlot and, in just one puff, trigger actions that could leave scores dead.

The narrator of "The Strays" is Lily, 8 years old at the beginning of the novel, who meets Helena's middle daughter, Eva, at school and becomes hypnotized by her new friend's strange and exciting household, where meals are erratic and sometimes nonexistent and parties frequently rampage into the night, a riotous display the girls watch from a crow's nest balcony on the roof, dizzy with stolen wine and reefer.

But at the crux of Berenson's thesis is a supposed connection between marijuana, psychosis, and violence, and an argument that legalization, and the greater levels of cannabis use that will come with it, will create more violent crime in the US. To make his case, Berenson early on reaches back to the initial wave of reefer madness, looking at the reception of marijuana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Mexico and India.
