A voice that is not possible to write, a sound that cannot be transcribed, speech that does not make the historical record except in its very inaudibility.

Like Slowdive, who recorded an eponymous album last year, Low's name describes them in ways they may not have intended: unless you turn the album up loud or listen on headphones to hear the tremendously distorted details, the album approaches inaudibility.

His first opera, Bliss, based on the novel by Peter Carey, premiered at Opera Australia in 2010. Dean's compositional style is known for creating dynamic soundscapes and treating single instrumental parts with complex rhythms. He shapes musical extremes, from harsh explosions to inaudibility. Modern playing techniques are as characteristic for his style as an elaborate percussion scoring, often enriched with objects from everyday life.

There is a consensus among many collectors that the Black Lion CD edition, which includes one bonus track and an alternate take of the title track, was very poorly mastered (with reduced volume in the right channel, resulting in the virtual inaudibility of Tyrone Washington's woodwinds).

After the death of Ian Curtis, the remaining members of Joy Division regrouped as New Order. Their first release was a re-recording of "Ceremony" as a stand-alone single backed with "In a Lonely Place", with guitarist Bernard Sumner taking over lead vocals. Because Curtis had never transcribed the lyrics to "Ceremony" and because his singing was muted to the point of near-inaudibility on all surviving recordings, Sumner reportedly had to put them through a graphic equalizer to approximate the lyrics.New Order Story.

While the terms wow and flutter used to be used separately (for wobbles at a rate below and above 4 Hz respectively), they tend to be combined now that universal standards exist for measurement which take both into account simultaneously. Listeners find flutter most objectionable when the actual frequency of wobble is 4 Hz, and less audible above and below this rate. This fact forms the basis for the weighting curve shown here. The weighting curve is misleading, in as much as it presumes inaudibility of flutters above 200 Hz, when actually faster flutters are quite damaging to the sound.

The original version of the song is completely improvised, both musically and lyrically, and the vocals are indecipherable due to their inaudibility in the recording mix and the mumbling vocal style. However, the song's three main chords (A-G-C) are repeated throughout the verses and choruses apart from a bridge which uses experimental chords. The song's theme is reputedly based on a bitter relationship and the term "closing time" is often seen as referring to the end of the relationship itself. A more structured and lyrically- coherent version of the song was performed by Hole on various occasions throughout 1994 and 1995, during their tours promoting Live Through This.

In September 2007, the Audio Engineering Society published the results of a year- long trial, in which a range of subjects including professional recording engineers were asked to discern the difference between high-resolution audio sources (including SACD and DVD-Audio) and a compact disc audio (44.1 kHz/16 bit) conversion of the same source material under double-blind test conditions. Out of 554 trials, there were 276 correct answers, a 49.8% success rate corresponding almost exactly to the 50% that would have been expected by chance guessing alone. When the level of the signal was elevated by 14 dB or more, the test subjects were able to detect the higher noise floor of the CD- quality loop easily. The authors commented: > Now, it is very difficult to use negative results to prove the inaudibility > of any given phenomenon or process.
