The A.V. Club's Evan Rytlewsky described the song as an "after-dark fare." Entertainment Weekly wrote an impressed opinion stating that it leads to intoxicating hooks, calling it a "bedroom knocker" and continued: "which for better (or worse), rivals the bump-'n'-grind heights of '90s Casanova crew Jodeci." David Amidon of PopMatters wrote a mixed review: "But then there are the songs like "No Bullshit" he'll no doubt be expected to slow his sets with.

The main protagonist is Chander, a tourist photographer in the Indian city of Nainital living with his parents (played by Alok Nath and Kanu Gill), and best friend Johnny (played by Sanjay Narvekar). While on his way to work, he meets a stage dancer (a banjaran) named Nirmala [played by Preeti Jhangiani] and is seduced by her beauty. He takes photographs of her and later befriends her, serenading her with sweet nothings about "taking her across the moon and stars" and promises to take her to the city of dreams, Mumbai. She agrees to be with him, despite objections from her guardians, her uncle (played by (Tej Sapru) and aunt (played by Himani Shivpuri) who had other plans for her.

The song received positive reviews from music critics. BBC Music's Mike Diver said, in the album's review, that the "Parachute" is "memorable" due to its use of "military percussion" and Nick Levine of Digital Spy claimed that the track contains a "cute combination" of "strings and sweet nothings". Tom Ewing of The Guardian said that the song was "an austere take on modern pop that gives Cole's voice the space it needs" and Louise McCudden of in the News said that, despite having "possibly the most lyrically mundane chorus [she had] ever heard", "Parachute" is a "well-calculated song" that gets stuck in the listener's head. MusicOMH writer Sam Shepherd voiced his belief that the song includes's Cole's best vocal from the album and he praised the "deftly orchestrated production" and Andy Gill of The Independent said that there is an "undertow of paranoia" in the piece.

With the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2008, he played Bassanio in Tim Carroll's The Merchant Of Venice; Biondello in The Taming Of The Shrew; and Robert Hooke in Riot Group co- founder Adriano Shaplin's The Tragedy Of Thomas Hobbes, directed by Elizabeth Freestone. Laskey has played at Shakespeare's Globe theatre: he worked with artistic director Dominic Dromgoole on two productions, playing four characters in Trevor Griffiths's "A New World: A Life Of Thomas Paine" and Octavius Caesar in "Antony And Cleopatra"; for two seasons he played Bernard of Clairvaux in Howard Brenton's In Extremis, directed by John Dove; and in Thea Sharrock’s 2009 production of "As You Like It". He received an Ian Charleson Award Commendation for his performance as Orlando. He has toured internationally with the Young Vic theatre in two major productions: Luc Bondy's 2010 production of Schnitzler's "Sweet Nothings", in which he took the role of Theodore; and in 2011 he played The Other in Jon Fosse's two hander "I Am The Wind", Patrice Chéreau's only ever English language production.
