Sweet Nothing issued two singles for the album in the UK. "Feed A Cat To Your Cobra" came first, and included tracks recorded at the band's first BBC John Peel radio session. Among these was a cover of The Stooges song, "1970". The second single, for "Love Is Happiness", included a re-recorded version of the song, as well as tracks recorded during the band's second BBC John Peel radio session. These recordings, along with a cover of the Spacemen 3 tune, "Losing Touch With My Mind", marked the appearance of the band's new drummer, Troy Petrey.

The band have toured the United States, the UK and Europe, including playing the All Tomorrow's Parties music festival in December 2004. Later that year, Oxley formed a dance pop band, The Sparklers, in Sydney with Chris Abrahams (ex-Benders) on keyboards; her brother Peter Oxley on bass guitar; Bill Bilson (The Sunnyboys) on drums; and Mark Walker (Hoi Polloi, Sweet Nothing) on guitar – who was replaced by Colin Bloxsom, a year later. The Sparklers released two singles before Abrahams left, he was replaced by Phil Grove. The Sparklers issued an album, Persuasion, in October 1988 with Oxley writing all tracks except one co-written with Abrahams. Persuasion was produced by Leszek Karski on Mighty Boys Records before the group disbanded in 1989.

Welch expressed excitement about putting new material together for a third album after the band finishes touring at the end of September 2012. Murray Paterson (born 1963) is an Australian songwriter and musician most notable for his collaborations with Tex Perkins. Among his compositions are: Fine Mess and Ice in the Sun from the Tex Perkins album Dark Horses; Lucid, Midnight Sunshine and A Name on Every One from the Tex Perkins’ Dark Horses album Sweet Nothing; Paycheques and Someday I’ll Forget from the Tex, Don and Charlie album All is Forgiven. He also contributed I Miss Your Big White Bum to the Joel Silbersher album Greasy Lens. Paterson and Perkins co-scored the soundtrack for the film Beautiful Kate, the directorial feature debut from Rachel Ward.

Interest in the band was kindled in the late 1990s when Alive / Total Energy Records released a studio recording of the then-unheard song "Electrophonic Tonic", the song that was to have been the B-side of "City Slang". In 1999, Mack Aborn Rhythm Arts released Sweet Nothing, a compact disc compilation of rare live and recorded SRB tunes. A second compilation called City Slang was released in 2000. This in turn sparked a renewed interest in Scott Morgan, who was critically acclaimed in the 1980s with bands like Scots Pirates and the Scott Morgan Band who were largely successful only in the Midwest.

After forming in 2002 and playing the local scene in Melbourne, Australia, the band began in 2003 to gain an amount of attention, their self-released first EP (The Sinking Citizenship EP) debuting at number 2 in independent radio, with strong support from local and national radio stations (including Xfm London) leading to a sell-out launch. The band recorded their first album, Broadcasting Germs, in the second half of 2003, using mostly equipment 'borrowed' from others without their knowledge. The album was released in 2004 on UXB Recordings, and in April 2005 was released in the UK and much of Europe on Sweet Nothing Records, distributed by Cargo Records. In June, a limited edition (500 only) single, Shake was released in the UK on Fantastic Plastic Records.

Melanie Susan Oxley is the daughter of Eric and Jan Oxley. Eric, an art teacher, was originally from Manchester and had migrated to Sydney before the Oxley family settled in the rural northern beach community of Kingscliff in 1965. Oxley's older brothers are Peter and Jeremy Oxley (born ca. 1961), who founded Australian pop-rock band The Sunnyboys, and her younger brothers are Damien and Tim (singer, guitarist, drummer in The Humdingers, The Verys, The Dearhunters, and Roger Loves Betty). Oxley performed with Louis Tillett's jazz influenced blues-rock band Paris Green in 1984, alongside Charlie Owen. She performed backing vocals on The Triffids' 1984 EP, Raining Pleasure. In early 1985 she worked for the Johnny Kannis Band with Richard Jakimyszyn on guitar, Tony Juke on keyboards and guitar, Kannis on lead vocals, Tony Robertson on bass guitar, Don Raffael on saxophone and Destroyer on drums. Also that year she was briefly in Sweet Nothing.
