The Poppenhausen was an enlarged, tandem two-seat version of the single seat Schleicher Hols der Teufel. It was developed by Alexander Schleicher for production in his factory in the Wasserkuppe valley, though it is likely that Hans Jacobs, joint chief designer with Alexander Lippisch of the single seater was involved. The Poppenhausen first flew in 1928. The Poppenhausen had a simple, constant-chord wing much like that of the Hols der Teufel though of 16% greater span, built around two spars and fabric covered except at the leading edge which was plywood skinned.

The resulting MSrE M-20 was designed by Ernő Rubik and Endre Janscó. It was Rubik's first design so is known sometimes as the R-01 but more commonly by its nickname EMESE-B. Emese is how MSrE sounds in spoken Hungarian and at that time Hungarian training gliders fell into aircraft class B. Like the Hols der Teufel, the M-20 had a flat frame fuselage with its wing mounted on its top and with a nacelle enclosing the pilot's open fuselage.

In order to continue working in watercolors, he adopted the nihonga, or Japanese‐style, of painting, and began studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts which had a Japanese‐style painting department. While attending, he was impressed by the film The Tale of the White Serpent and the animator Yasuji Mori, and immediately applied to work at Toei Animation. The ready availability of detailed plans and the fact that with its low wing loading the Hols der Teufel was one of only a few training gliders with the soaring capability to take a pilot to a C-badge resulted in widespread amateur construction worldwide, though overall numbers are hard to establish, not least in Germany. Twelve were registered in Hungary, one imported in 1929 and the rest locally built between 1931 and 1938. Reimar Horten developed a relationship with Dynamit AG, at Troisdorf, the major producer of phenolic resins in Germany. There he learnt of the various products available and how to use them in aircraft structures. After having built two Hols der Teufel wings from 'Dynal', a plastic composite material made from paper reinforced phenolic resin and incorporated other plastic materials in the Horten H.II, the Horten brothers took the next step and designed an aircraft to be built completely of Dynal, (with the exception of undercarriage, engine mounts, high strength fittings and cockpit framing). Structural components were moulded and assembled using glue and bolts through holes drilled in the components without bushings.
