The building in which the company currently operates was built in 1909 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The depot's construction dramatically increased Dement's property value and much of his land was surveyed into town lots and sold off. The area, which was visibly separated from the rest of Dixon by the rail embankment and vacant lots, became known as Dement Town. The area prospered until Dement's death, when it began to decline. However, the section of Dixon known as Dement Town still exists.

Dement's parents were George Dement, Sr., and the former Clara Catherine Depew. Employed by Gulf Oil, the senior Dement relocated in 1919 from Missouri to Bossier Parish in northwestern Louisiana. When Clara was giving birth to George, Jr., with the assistance of a midwife, a mule crawled under their old farmhouse in the Princeton community in search of corn. The creature tried to stand and shook the floor while the baby was being brought forward.

In 1989, Dement was elected mayor as a Democrat, when the incumbent Donald Edward Jones, a former national president of the Junior Chamber International and a Bossier City businessman, did not seek reelection. Dement won second, third, and fourth terms in 1993, 1997, and in 2001. He retired on June 30, 2005, exactly sixteen years from his original inauguration into office. He returned to Sikeston, Missouri where he had grown up and began practicing law. The Dement-Zinser House is a historic house located at 105 Zinser Place in Washington, Illinois. The house was built in 1858 for Richard C. Dement, a businessman and riverboat owner. Its Greek Revival design features a transom and sidelights around the front door, a cornice with a frieze board, and a gable roof with eave returns. The house is the only standing Greek Revival house in Washington and may be the oldest house in the city.

Rival was built at Oregon City, Oregon by William and John Dement, two brothers who were merchants in Oregon City, and Capt. George A. Pease, who became her first captain. Major John Dement commanded forces during the battle and suffered five killed in action. It was first built as a log cabin by Abner Dement, the son of a French immigrant and slaveholder, in 1817. The couple hired Arch Hite to turn the cabin into a two-story house with a portico designed in the Greek Revival architectural style in 1833. Born in Orange County, Virginia to Revolutionary War General Thomas Posey and Mary Alexander, Alexander Posey was a physician in Gallatin County, Illinois when he was elected brigadier general by the volunteers gathered at Dixon's Ferry on June 13, 1832, possibly due to being the brother-in-law of U.S. Indian Agent Joseph Street. Assigned to command one of three brigades under General Henry Atkinson two days later, Posey was sent to Fort Hamilton accompanied by two companies of regulars under Hugh Brady on June 20. On June 25, a detachment of soldiers from his command under Major John Dement were involved in a large skirmish with a Sauk war party under Neapope and Weesheet while encamped at Burr Oak Grove. Posey attempted to relieve Dement setting out from nearby Buffalo Grove, however the Sauk had retreated only two hours before his arrival.

In 1975 he launched the American Sleep Disorders Association, now known as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and served as president for its first twelve years. In that same year he and Mary Carskadon invented the Multiple Sleep Latency Test used to measure sleepiness, a test of how quickly people fall asleep, sleep onset latency, during several daytime opportunities. He was also chairman of the National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, whose final report led directly to the creation of a new agency within the National Institutes of Health, the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research. When Black Allan was sold to his most famous owner, James Brantley, in 1903, his purchase price was $110. He was sold without papers, but Brantley eventually recovered his registration certificate. Brantley rode Black Allan himself, and his son French Brantley sometimes rode the horse to school. At the very end of Black Allan's life, he was sold by James Brantley to Albert Dement of Wartrace, Tennessee, one of the earliest Tennessee Walking Horse breeders.

William Charles Dement (July 29, 1928 – June 17, 2020) was an American sleep researcher and founder of the Sleep Research Center at Stanford University. He was a leading authority on sleep, sleep deprivation and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy. For this pioneering work in a previously uncharted field in the United States, he is sometimes referred to as the American father of sleep medicine.

Dudy Noble Field at Polk-Dement Stadium is a baseball park on the campus of Mississippi State University, just outside the city limits of Starkville, Mississippi. It is home of the Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball team. DNF- PDS has been the setting of Southeastern Conference tournaments, NCAA Regional and Super Regional Championships, and it holds the current NCAA on-campus single-game attendance record at 15,586. It is known for the Left Field Lounge.

First a cotton-exporting river landing, next a railroad town, then an airbase and oil-boom town, Bossier City is now known for its tourism and casino gambling. Three casinos in the city have financed a number of municipal projects, many completed during the administration of the late Mayor George Dement.

The Native American forces in the battle were under the command of Black Hawk. The militia commanders were, Captain Adam Wilson Snyder during the first battle and a Major John Dement during the second battle. Basil Spalding was born on December 11, 1846 to John Spalding, a slave-holding tobacco plantation owner and his second wife, Mary Carroll, a great- granddaughter of Daniel Carroll, a Founding Father of the United States. Very shortly after Spalding's birth, however, Mary Carroll died. When he was two years old, his father, John Spalding, also died. An orphan, Spalding was taken into the care of his relative, William Fendley Dement, a Charles County plantation owner.

Besides the pace, he performed a lateral ambling gait now known as the running walk. He was a black stallion standing , 5 feet high. He was given the designation Allan F-1 when the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' Association, precursor to the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders' and Exhibitors' Association, was formed in 1935. He had multiple owners throughout his life, but his last owners, James Brantley and Albert Dement, were the only ones to recognize Black Allan's use as a breeding stallion.

The duo defeated the teams of Ciclope and Slayer, and Dement Xtreme and Lancelot in the semi-finals and then go on to defeat the teams of Eterno and Pequeno Cobra, and Extreme Boy and Paranoiko to win the tournament. In late 2012 Flyer participated in CMLL's annual Bodybuilding contest, winning the beginners category. On January 21, 2014 Flyer won the Copa del Sol de Hidalgo as part of the Arena Aficion 62nd Anniversary celebration, defeating Maldito Jr. in the finals.

Marsha Masi. Mrs. Masi presided over another school remodeling. During the 2004 construction the Arthur C. Lilly Center, the Johnnie Rountree Fine Arts Center and the new field house at Dement Field were all constructed and the entire school was given a facelift which included new dining areas and renovations in all three gymnasiums. Mrs Masi implemented many new and innovative courses for the students of GPHS many of which offered student instruction in the career field of their choice.

Randy Gardner (born ) is an American from San Diego, California, who set the record for the longest time a human has gone without sleep. In December 1963/January 1964, 17-year-old Gardner stayed awake for 11 days and 25 minutes (264.4 hours), breaking the previous record of 260 hours held by Honolulu DJ, Tom Rounds. Gardner's record attempt was attended by Stanford sleep researcher Dr. William C. Dement, while his health was monitored by Lt. Cmdr. John J. Ross.

As captain, Dement led a Fayette County company of volunteers, formed on April 20, from Beardstown to Oquawka and the brigade of General Samuel Whiteside. After his 2000 comeback album If I Could Only Fly, Haggard released two gospel albums on the same day on May 1, 2001: Cabin in the Hills and Two Old Friends with Albert Brumley, Jr. The former includes a mix of traditional songs arranged by Haggard as well as new Haggard originals. It also features the Iris Dement song "Shores of Jordan". Haggard produced the collection himself and is joined by Strangers steel guitarist Norman Hamlet and singers Porter Wagoner and Bonnie Owens.

Sometime around 1876, Rudabaugh joined Mike Roarke and Dan Dement to form the outlaw band known as the "Trio." There is a disputed story from around this time that Rudabaugh taught Doc Holliday to use a pistol while Doc taught him the finer points of playing cards. In October 1876, Rudabaugh robbed a Sante Fe Railroad construction camp and fled south. Wyatt Earp was issued a temporary commission as Deputy U.S. Marshal and he left Dodge City, following Rudabaugh over towards Fort Griffin, Texas.

Casandra grew up in Wallingford, Connecticut with the first name Rosanne and still answers to "Ro". She is a dramatic vocalist and live performer as well as a painter and film maker. Her films often featured the music of one of her bands such as Menace Dement and/or the Trees, a duo with guitarist and political scientist Frank Morales with whom Casandra has a child named Frankie. Her film The Anarchists was aired on Manhattan cable Television in 1992 and features the music of Missing Foundation.

Dement had an interest in psychiatry, which in those days considered dreams to be important, so he was excited by the discovery and was eager to pursue it. Pease, and John Marshall In 1858, with others Pease bought Elk, and, in 1860, Onward In 1860 Pease help build, and owned five-ninths, of the steamer Enterprise. Pease ran Enterprise for two years and placed it into the People's Transportation Company, which had been organized in 1862. In 1991, Peele accepted an assistant's job at the UNC-Greensboro. After four years with the Spartans, Peele was promoted to replace former head coach Mike Dement, who had left to take over the men's basketball program at SMU. In Peele's first season, only the second year in which UNC-Greensboro was eligible for Division I postseason competition, the Spartans won the Big South Conference regular season and tournament championships. In the NCAA tournament, UNC-Greensboro were the 15th seed in the Southeast region, and fell in the first round to the Cincinnati Bearcats.

For a brief period he threatened to mobilize the Alabama National Guard and use force if necessary to prevent the removal of the Ten Commandments plaque from Moore's courtroom. In October 1997, Judge DeMent issued another sweeping order forbidding certain religious practices in DeKalb County's public schools, which also aroused controversy. James verbally attacked DeMent's order as yet another illegitimate intrusion by federal courts into local affairs. The judge's order was, in part, reversed shortly after James left office, allowing students at their own choice to hold religious meetings on school grounds.

Dement sold the house only three years after building it, and it passed through several owners until Dr. Harley Zinser acquired it in 1905. Zinser used his home as his doctor's office, from which he served as a respected village doctor; he also made house calls, delivered babies, and even treated animals as part of his work. The house remained in Zinser's family until 1994, when the Washington Historical Society bought it for a museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 27, 2002.

The columns were made of sandstone, not limestone, and they remained upright after the fire. Major Walker's house, built in 1851, is still standing at 1127 N. Main Street in Lewistown. This -story brick building with hard maple flooring and cherry wood trim was built on property that Walker had bought from Ossian Ross.

In 2010, Copeland was honored with the designation of Concordian of the Year by the Concordia Parish Chamber of Commerce. In May 2011, Copeland struggled with the highest Mississippi River water levels Vidalia had ever faced and the looming loss of three hundred jobs. Citizens, including prisoners, built 8-foot barriers downtown around the medical and convention centers and a hotel, and the two municipal water wells. In 2013, along with George Dement, former mayor of Bossier City in northwestern Louisiana and several others, Copeland was inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame in Winnfield.

Smith died of liver cancer in Portland on March 23, 2015. In addition to the CHAI Project, Smith was an active supporter of numerous community projects and causes, the support sometimes taking the form of blends made especially for the organization. This work included the Portland International Film Festival, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon College of Art and Craft, the Caldera Arts Center, and the Mercy Corps School Education Retention Project (SERP) as well as in kind donations, including to local schools, community projects, and larger foundations. Smith Teamaker is now headed by his wife Kim DeMent Smith.

James Dement "Big James" Weaver (November 25, 1903 – December 12, 1983) was an American Major League Baseball pitcher with the Washington Senators, New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds between 1928 and 1939. He batted and threw right-handed. Over the course of his 12-year MLB career, Weaver compiled a 57–36 win–loss record, a 3.88 ERA, striking out 449 while walking 336. His only ejection came on June 21, 1936, for singing in the dugout, annoying umpire Beans Reardon, with whom he had an argument the game before.

The Left Field Lounge is the area beyond the outfield fence in Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium at Mississippi State University. It is truly unique in college baseball, and has enabled the grounds to be named the "#1 place to watch college baseball" and among the "100 things you gotta do before you graduate" by Sports Illustrated. The famed author John Grisham is an alumnus of Mississippi State and avid fan of MSU college baseball. For the book Inside Dudy Noble: A Celebration of Mississippi State Baseball, he wrote an introduction about his time at MSU and in the Left Field Lounge.

Eugene Aserinsky (May 6, 1921 - July 22, 1998), a pioneer in sleep research, was a graduate student at the University of Chicago in 1953 when he discovered REM sleep. He was the son of a dentist of Russian–Jewish descent. He made the discovery after hours spent studying the eyelids of sleeping subjects. While the phenomenon was in the beginning more interesting for a fellow of PhD student Aserinsky, William Charles Dement, both Aserinsky and their PhD adviser, Nathaniel Kleitman, went on to demonstrate that this "rapid-eye movement" was correlated with dreaming and a general increase in brain activity.

Among his last positions was President of the American Mechanical Cashier Corporation which had a plant in Jersey City, New Jersey an office at 40 Wall Street and a flagship store on Broadway. AMCC provided a suite for him at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Among the others involved in the company were former Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Charles S. Fairchild and investment banker Henry L. Horton father in law of Edward F. Hutton. The company was developing a proprietary cash register and had acquired the Isaac S. Dement machine stenography patents.

A new wing on the north side of campus was built in 1956 adding a new gym and more classroom space. A new library was added in 1964 allowing for more classroom space and books. In 1994 a new library, front office, science wing and cafeteria were added during a major facelift of the school. During a 2004 construction the Arthur C. Lilly Center, the Johnnie Rountree Performing Arts Center and the new field house at Dement Field were all constructed and the entire school was given a facelift which included new dining areas and renovations in all three gymnasiums.

The 2005–06 season began with a "new" head coach at the helm, Mike Dement (it was his second tenure with UNCG after having previously coached the Spartans from 1991–1995). Former head coach McCaffery left to run the Siena men's basketball program. Despite the coaching change, Hines continued to excel. Starting 30 of UNCG's 31 games (did not play the season- opener against UW-Green Bay), Hines led the team in scoring (19.3 points per game / 578 total), rebounding (8.2 rebounds per game – also led conference / 247 total) and blocks (2.8 blocks per game / 84 total).

Dement went to Arizona a year before he graduated from Elm Grove High School (pronounced ELEM Grove) in Bossier Parish. He then earned a dollar a day as a delivery boy for a Bossier City drugstore. Soon he was nearing completion of officer candidacy school in Corpus Christi, Texas, when he had a dispute with a lieutenant. Outraged, he joined the submarine section of the United States Navy during World War II. Though his submarine, the USS Razorback (SS-394), did not enter service until 1944, it participated in five combat patrols in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

Dement was married to the former Sunshine Norris (1924-2011), a Shreveport native and one of two daughters of Steve Norris, a Bossier Parish sheriff's deputy, and the former Avis Wasson. Sunshine was homecoming queen at Bossier High School in 1942, when the players won the state football championship. She graduated in 1945 and like her husband attended Centenary College, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in education. She taught for twenty years for the Bossier Parish School Board at Bossier Elementary School and then became the first physical education teacher at Greenacres Junior High School in Bossier City.

George Dement met Sunshine when he was working as a soda jerk for $19 a week in a drug store. After the war, he was a higher-paid bartender, but Sunshine insisted that he leave that job, join the First Baptist Church of Bossier City, and enroll at Centenary College. The two somehow concealed their marriage for a year out of fear that Steve Norris would question George's ability to support a wife. Throughout his career in business and politics, Sunshine, was always by his side and was an active "First Lady" of Bossier City for the sixteen years that he was mayor.

Next Egge was invited on tour by several luminaries, including Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Iris DeMent, Shawn Colvin and Ron Sexsmith. She recorded her first live album Mile Marker on her solo tour in 1999. She later shared the stage with John Prine, Lucinda Williams, George Jones and Sinéad O'Connor among others. After a few years of constant touring, Egge returned to Silver City, New Mexico where she began building her own house in the desert and spending time with family. In 2002, after writing some of the songs for her next record, Egge resettled in Brooklyn, New York.

Donnarumma collaborated with a range of artists across disciplines including performance art, cyberart, spatial sound, and live cinema. In 2012, together with cyberfeminist artists Francesca da Rimini (of VNS Matrix collective) and Linda Dement, Donnarumma performed in the 12-hour saga The Moving Forest, conceived by new media artists Shu Lea Cheang and Martin Howse. The work expanded the last 12 minute of Kurosawa’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Throne of Blood (1957), into a sonic performance saga. In 2014, he collaborated with computer science researcher Baptiste Caramiaux to create a new work, Septic, commissioned by transmediale festival's Art Hack Day.

The stages of sleep were first described in 1937 by Alfred Lee Loomis and his coworkers, who separated the different electroencephalography (EEG) features of sleep into five levels (A to E), representing the spectrum from wakefulness to deep sleep. In his first season back at UNCG, Dement led a young Spartan squad to a 12–19 mark. He had two players earning all-conference status in Ricky Hickman and Kyle Hines, and another earning SoCon All-Freshman honors. Early in the season, UNCG won on the road at East Carolina and at home against a Gardner-Webb team that had gone right down to the buzzer with North Carolina two weeks earlier. But like many young squads do, the Spartans had their struggles down the stretch and a 7–3 start—one of the best in school history—was forgotten with February's fumbles.

In the 19th century two advocates of this discipline were the French sinologists Marquis d'Hervey de Saint Denys and Alfred Maury. The field gained momentum in 1952, when Nathaniel Kleitman and his student Eugene Aserinsky discovered regular cycles. A further experiment by Kleitman and William C. Dement, then another medical student, demonstrated the particular period of sleep during which electrical brain activity, as measured by an electroencephalograph (EEG), closely resembled that of waking, in which the eyes dart about actively. Burke next joined the short-lived indie rock group Menace Dement, playing bass on their debut EP and posthumous album. In 1993, Burke relocated to Richmond, Virginia, with Nathanson and Born Against vocalist Sam McPheeters. He played in the first lineup of Nathanson's folk punk group (Young) Pioneers, but appeared only on the group's debut EP. Around this time, he and McPheeters co-founded Men's Recovery Project, an experimental noise rock band, who released several albums and toured extensively over the next ten years before disbanding. Burke also embarked on a solo project called Sinking Body, which played its own brand of brash noise rock.

The exhibition was launched as part of an expanded event called 10 Minutes to Midnight, presented by Alphaville and Nuclear Futures. The event combined history, art and discussion and was supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and Arts SA. It featured three stages, including a projected video installation which created an impression of the nuclear test program and its effects and an open discussion with Boylan and Hudson. The event attracted a public audience which included nuclear veterans and their relatives who were able to share their experiences and ask questions. Additional contributing artists included Teresa Crea, Linda Dement, John Romeril, Nic Mollison and Luke Harrald.

Among his credits as a producer are eight albums which he produced for Mary Chapin Carpenter, as well as releases by BeauSoleil, John Gorka, and Janis Ian. Jennings has played acoustic, electric, slide, lap, steel and baritone guitars, synthesizers, organ, piano and percussion, sung background vocals and/or produced albums for Carpenter, the Indigo Girls, the Rankin Family, Niamh Kavanagh, Cheryl Wheeler, Iris DeMent, George Jones, Robin & Linda Williams and Auldridge, Reid & Coleman, among many others. As a recording artist, he has five albums to his credit. After Bill Danoff (of the Starland Vocal Band) introduced him to Mary Chapin Carpenter, they began performing together in the Washington, D.C. area.

The album is the second compilation album featuring duets with Prine. From 2004 to 2011 Carolyn Wong provided both production and lighting design for Gerring's works. Eric Rosenzveig began managing the Liz Gerring Dance Company in 2003, assuming the executive director position from 2009 to 2017. Elizabeth DeMent, principal dancer in 2009's Montauk and 2011's Lichtung / Clearing, has worked as administrator and company manager from 2009 until the present. The need and function of sleep are among the least clearly understood areas in sleep research. When asked, after 50 years of research, what he knew about the reason people sleep, William C. Dement, founder of Stanford University's Sleep Research Center, answered, "As far as I know, the only reason we need to sleep that is really, really solid is because we get sleepy." It is likely that sleep evolved to fulfill some primeval function and took on multiple functions over time (analogous to the larynx, which controls the passage of food and air, but descended over time to develop speech capabilities). The multiple hypotheses proposed to explain the function of sleep reflect the incomplete understanding of the subject.

Mike Dement served as the architect of the program in its move to Division I. He was the Spartans' head coach from 1991–95, leading them from a team with no conference affiliation to the top of the Big South Conference regular season standings in just four seasons. In his last two seasons at UNCG, Dement's teams went 38–18, including a school-record 23 wins in 1994–95. That year, his team won the Big South Conference's regular season title and was the runner up in the conference tournament. The team received votes in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches' polls for the first time in school history during that record-setting season.

In recent years, Griffith has toured with various other artists, including Buddy Holly's band, The Crickets; John Prine; Iris DeMent; Suzy Bogguss; and Judy Collins. Griffith has recorded duets with many artists, among them Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, John Prine, Don McLean, Jimmy Buffett, Dolores Keane, Willie Nelson, Adam Duritz (singer of Counting Crows), The Chieftains, John Stewart; and Darius Rucker (lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish). She has also contributed background vocals on many other recordings. Griffith suffered from severe writer's block for a number of years after 2004, lasting until the 2009 release of her The Loving Kind album, which contained nine selections that she had written and composed either entirely by herself or as collaborations.

Below the city, the South Fork flows north through a canyon into another broad valley, now followed by Oregon Route 542, and passing Coquille Myrtle Grove State Natural Site and Albert H. Powers Memorial State Park. About a mile downstream, Dement Creek enters from the left and the terrain around the river transforms from hills to farmland. As it assumes a meandering course, the river passes Broadbent, then the Middle Fork Coquille River, by far the largest tributary, enters from the right, marking the head of tide. A few miles onward, the river passes Myrtle Point and meets the North Fork to form the Coquille River about upstream of the Pacific Ocean.

However, his most significant album of the 1990s was the innovative 1999 folk opera, The Man From God Knows Where. Drawing on the music of Norway and Ireland in addition to American folk and country, The Man From God Knows Where is a song cycle tracing the journeys of Russell's ancestors from Europe to America and the struggles they encountered. Recorded in Norway near the spot where his great-grandfather was born in 1847, the album features singers Iris DeMent, Dolores Keane, Dave Van Ronk, and Kari Bremnes, portraying (and telling the stories of) Russell's various ancestors. The album's title came from the epitaph of a different Tom Russell, an Irish activist executed in 1803.

DeMent was inspired to write her first song "Our Town" by a drive through a boarded-up Midwest town, at the age of 25. The song lyrics came to her "exactly as it is now", without need for re-writing, and she realized then that songwriting was her calling in life. "Our Town" was played during the closing scene for the final episode (July 26, 1995) of CBS's television series Northern Exposure. The song has been recorded by Kate Rusby, Kate Brislin & Jody Stecher and Trampled by Turtles. Her first album, Infamous Angel, was released in 1992 on the Rounder- Philo label and explored such themes as religious skepticism, small-town life, and human frailty.

From 1993 to 2003, Sykes hosted a popular songwriting series on Memphis' iconic Beale Street. This series showcased numerous acclaimed songwriters including folk icons Steve Earle and Guy Clark, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame writers Richard Leigh and Roger Cook, and then-newcomers Rivers Rutherford and Jimmy Davis. Teaming up with Dallas businessman and investor Kelcy Warren in 1997, Sykes began to expand the abilities of his Woodshed recording studio as well as open new publishing companies. With Warren, the two formed a new label called Syren Records, which released Sykes' next two albums, rocker Advanced Medication for the Blues in 1998 and Americana-friendly Don't Count Us Out in 2001 which features duets with friends like Iris DeMent, John Prine, Rodney Crowell, and Susan Marshall.

Black Allan on the Brantley farm in 1905 The Tennessee Walking Horse, the first horse breed to be named for an American state, was developed in the Middle Basin of Tennessee. Horse breeder James Brantley began his breeding program in the early 1900s using the foundation stallion Black Allan, who had a smooth running walk and a calm disposition which he passed on to his offspring. Though Black Allan died in 1910, shortly after being sold to another breeder named Albert Dement, he sired 40 known foals whose bloodline became well known in the region. One of his sons, Roan Allen, carried on his bloodline and is estimated by horse breeding experts to be the ancestor of 100% of living Tennessee Walking Horses.

Yet still, 10th-seeded UNCG knocked off seventh-seeded Western Carolina in the opening round of the conference tournament and then had three shots at the end of regulation to beat second-seeded Elon, only to fall in overtime in the SoCon quarterfinals. In 2006–07, Dement guided the Spartans to a 16–14 mark, including a second-place finish in the Southern Conference's Northern Division. Hines, only a junior, earned Southern Conference Player of the Year and Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention status – a pair of firsts in the history of the UNCG program. The Spartans were considered by many to be the most dangerous team in the SoCon Tournament, but were upended in the final seconds by Furman in the quarterfinal round.

The main title from the first season uses "The Leftovers (Main Title Theme)", an original piece of music by composer Max Richter, accompanied by images like a fresco in the style of the Sistine Chapel. The second season uses "Let the Mystery Be" by Iris DeMent. In addition, the opening changes to one that shows images of pictures and people who were departed missing from them and in their place is various images of earth-related phenomena like rain, clouds, aurora borealis and lightning. Season 3 retains the opening from Season 2 but with a different theme song for each episode, including reprises of the Season 1 main title theme and "Let the Mystery Be" in episodes seven and eight respectively.

Five months before the Games, Loper finished first in a grueling shoot- off against Joetta Dement at the U.S. Olympic trials in Fort Benning, Georgia to keep her own Olympic place that she obtained from the Pan American Games. As one of the possible frontrunners vying for an Olympic medal in the sporting event, Loper put up her own monumental effort with a qualifying score of 62 hits out of a possible 75 to grab the third seed in the six-woman final, but narrowly missed out on a potential medal by just one target that allowed her South Korean rival Lee Bo-na to snatch the bronze, finishing only in fourth with a total score of 82. Admittedly, Loper broke her family's promise not to take a quick glimpse of the scoreboard as a result of her medal failure.

Mark Moody of Under The Radar stated, "Andrews' vocals may not have the hard-bitten vernacular of Iris Dement, but in their purity of tone share the same deep level of pathos". AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote "In some respects, Old Flowers could be called a shade too successful, since it casts a specific understated spell, but listened to in the right mood or hour of the day, it's a bewitching affair". Writing for NME, Leonie Cooper said "Musing on the break-up of a nine-year-long romantic relationship, simplicity is key to "Old Flowers" innate grace". Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter stated, "Old Flowers conclusively proves that Courtney Marie Andrews has reached a difficult to attain level, showing once again that the timeworn trope of "breaking up is hard to do" can be dreadfully unsettling personally but also creatively rewarding".

The following April, at the next Guerra de Empresas show, Sexy Lady Chiva Rayada I, and Mini Charly Manson wrestled to a "No Contest" against Fresero, Jr., Ludark Shaitan and Mascarita Sagrada. On July 16, 2011 Sexy Lady and Dement Xtreme defeated Shaitan and Ojo Diabolico Jr. to become the first ever holders of the Xreme Mexican Wrestling Mixed Tag Team Championship. The team would later lose the title to Shaitan and Ojo Diabolico Jr., but regain it at IWRG's Guerra de Campeones ("War of the Champions") on December 25, 2011. While in IWRG, she participated in two intergender steel cage matches where the loser would be forced to unmask or have their hair shaved off, first at La Guerra de Sexos ("the war of the sexes") and then at Guerra del Golfo ("Gulf War"), both times escaping the cage to retain her mask.

Guilleminault then went on to describe obstructive sleep apnea in non-obese patients, being the first to coin the term "obstructive sleep apnea syndrome" (OSAS), a term commonly used nowadays. In addition, he described the presence of OSAS in children, demonstrating its association with learning and attention problems along with cardiovascular derangements. Following this work, he went on to describe the presence of elevated upper airway resistance in children in 1982, emphasizing the symptoms of attention deficit, hyperactivity, and abnormal behavior during wakefulness and sleep, learning disabilities and sleepwalking, sleep terrors and enuresis that accompanied this form of sleep-related breathing disorder; he described the same syndrome in adults and penned the term "upper airway resistance syndrome" (UARS) in adults. Finally, working in collaboration with Dr. William C. Dement, Guilleminault established the Apnea–hypopnea index (AHI), which is still in use today to characterize the presence and severity of sleep apnea.

Since 1935, the official mascot for Mississippi State has been a live English Bulldog named Bully. They compete in Division I of the NCAA and the western division of the 14-member Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Bulldogs have garnered a total of 28 conference championships (14 SEC). Mississippi State's most successful sport is baseball. The Diamond Dogs have won 17 conference championships (11 SEC) and 6 SEC tournament championships, while making 28 NCAA Tournament, and 10 College World Series appearances, including a 2nd-place finish in 2013. The Diamond Dogs play home games at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium, which holds the NCAA record for the largest single on-campus baseball attendance at 15,586 (April 12, 2014, vs. Mississippi). Mississippi State men's basketball has won 10 conference regular season championships (6 SEC), 4 conference tournament championships, and 7 divisional championships. The Bulldogs have made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by 3 Sweet Sixteen appearances and a trip to the Final Four in 1996.

A newcomer to the Olympic scene, Saathoff could not mount enough pressure to beat against the world's best running target shooters in front of a partisan crowd, rounding off the 20-shooter field to a dead last at 555 points. Under the tutelage of Belarussian-born coach Sergey Luzov, Saathoff began training with him shortly after the Games to further improve his craft and mettle towards a major world-shooting competition. In 1998, Saathoff came from nowhere to stun the entire field of expert shooters in the 10-metre running target, as he surprisingly won the silver medal with a score of 677.9, but could not chase China's Olympic bronze medalist Niu Zhiyuan for the title by just nine tenths of a point. Heading back to his second Olympics in Sydney 2000, Saathoff continued to dominate at the national trials, and watched his fellow marksman Lance Dement earning the other berth to join with him on the U.S. shooting team.

He made his debut in Williamsburg, Iowa in 1973, fronted the Mother Blues Band, and rose to prominence as a soloist when he opened for Lucinda Williams on her 1994 tour. He has produced or played guitar on several of her albums, including Essence, which was nominated for a Grammy Award, and appeared in her band in performances on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Night With Conan O’Brien and in Wim Wenders’ "Soul Of A Man" segment for the Blues series of Martin Scorsese. He has also produced recordings for Joan Baez, David Zollo, Pieta Brown, Iris DeMent, Ani DiFranco, and Kevin Gordon, with whom he co-fronted a band, and worked as a guitarist with the above and with Elvis Costello. He has produced and worked extensively with Greg Brown, including an appearance in 1999 on A Prairie Home Companion, and has been inducted to the Iowa Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, and Iowa Blues Hall of Fame.

At the May 7 coroner's jury, several local officials testified that there had been no previous concerns about the 4-year-old bridge. It had been carefully examined every year, and Henry Strong, the bridge tender, testified that there were three times as many people on the bridge only two weeks earlier. Jason Ayres, city clerk, said, “It was generally considered to a safe bridge; and people never hesitated to cross it” (Inter-Ocean). However, many also testified of problems with the bridge. Ayres, for example, told the Tribune on May 6 that he had seen the bridge “shake and swing perceptibly to and fro with the weight of a wagon passing over it,” adding that the bridge was “frail and unsafe.” The Tribune also reported that Col. John Dement, a highly respected citizen, had opposed the Truesdell bid in 1868 “because he believed it would be neither safe nor permanent, but the Council overruled his judgment and the judgment of other prominent citizens.” At the coroner's jury, several testified that the iron material was “bad” or “too light,” and they criticized the principles upon which the bridge was built.
