The content of causerie is not limited and it may be satire, parody, opinion, factual or straight fiction. Causerie is not defined by content or format, but style. Although usually published in a newspaper, many authors have published anthologies. The causerie as a form became popular in the English-speaking world during the later nineteenth-century following the widely published and influential essays of Andrew Lang.

The Grump ( ‘a person who always gets upset’) is a fictional character created by the Finnish author Tuomas Kyrö for a causerie series.

The causerie style is characterized by a personal approach to the reader; the writer "babbles" to the reader, from which the term derives. Language jokes, hyperbole, intentional disregard of linguistic and stylistic norms, and other absurd or humorous elements are permitted. For example, in a causerie about a politician, she or he may be placed in an imagined situation. Sentences are usually kept short, avoiding over-explaining, and room is left for the reader to read between the lines.

The pangram printed in Charles Triouleyre's "Causerie dactylographique", 1921 "Portez ce vieux whisky au juge blond qui fume" ("Take this old whisky to the blond judge who is smoking") is a French language pangram that uses every letter of the alphabet (not including accents). It is the equivalent of the English language phrase "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog". The pangram contains 37 letters and does not repeat any consonants. Though not the oldest or shortest pangram, it is the best known.

He also acted as dramatic critic for the Sunday Times, The Globe, and for the Daily Graphic from 1894 to 1906. In London Knight moved in literary and dramatic circles. Early associates included John Westland Marston and Sebastian Evans. At Marston's house he met authors and playwrights; Thomas Purnell introduced him to Swinburne, to whom and Dante Gabriel Rossetti he became close. As well as being a skilled musician and dancer, he also tried writing in his youth, publishing 'Aurora' and 'Diogenes and Glyceria' in The Literary Almanac in 1788 when only twenty years old.
