When their flighty charge takes off for a weekend at a country estate, the sleuths find themselves in a manor house mystery amusingly fitted out with chilly aristocrats, their family art collections (the Gainsborough and the Reynolds are quality goods, but "the Pre-Raphaelites are vulgar and virtually unsaleable") and their hereditary ghosts.

There are moments where it seems like Naz might finally be finding his way in Rikers Island, as when he grudgingly makes an alliance with Freddy that should keep him safe (Even Freddy thinks he should take the plea deal, amusingly.) But Naz was always one of the good kids before this.

Despite Mr. Audiard's embrace of contemporary norms that would have been out of place in a Wayne western — the amusingly deployed coarse language, the shots to the head and sprays of blood — he isn't attempting to rewrite genre in "The Sisters Brothers," which is one of this movie's virtues, along with its terrific actors and his sensitive direction of them.

But "Chambre Noire" spends most of its time with two adult versions of Valerie, both also puppets (designed by Ms. Aspeli, Pascale Blaison and Polina Borisova): one angry, outrageous and amusingly self-aware in late-1960s New York; the other skinny, grimy and pitiable in 1988 San Francisco, hallucinating alone in a cheap hotel room and nearing death at 52.

Her opening chapters, which track the way Austen's early illustrators depicted the author's books, make a strong argument that illustrations of the 18th century helped shape readers' expectations of the novels — amusingly, she quotes some 18th-century cranks grousing at the way certain illustrations "spoiled" Austen for them, in the way that people today sometimes say the 2005 Keira Knightley movie "spoiled" Pride and Prejudice.

And, aah, the women in Mack's life: They include a bendy-toy-bodied Haydn Gwynne, as his lover and mother-in-law, looking like she's waiting for Otto Dix to paint her; Debbie Kurup as the fierce Lucy Brown; and, most amusingly, Rosalie Craig, as Macheath's bride, the prim Polly Peachum, who looks and sounds rather like Julie Andrews in head girl mode, until she opens her mouth to belch resoundingly.

The bad boyfriend is exemplified by Tucker Max, a hero in a "movement among men to obtain power over women by insulting them and regularly withdrawing or disappearing," a man who, as Dombek amusingly describes, gets a blowjob from a girl who is about to go on a date with someone else, falls in love with his own reflection when he is drunk and dancing at a club, and later wakes up with a dog turd in his hair.

Martin is almost unrecognizable at first, and his over-the-top delivery is perfect for a man who seems like an IRL cartoon every time he pops up on TV.
