In late 2015, I set out to complete a quest I'd never properly conquered in all of my 30-something years of reading and playing—to venture into the depths of Firetop Mountain and defeat the Warlock who resided there, Zagor, playing fairly and squarely by the rules rather than cheating through fights and tests of luck and skill.

Africa has figured large in black American dreams of an existence truly and finally unencumbered by racism, and it's no coincidence that Hollywood's first major black superhero film isn't about an American at all: Even in the Marvel Universe, with its frozen supersoldiers and warlock mystics, a film about black Americans who'd never had to contend with racism would strain credulity.

The universe is certainly expanding, now that Thor's off adventuring in the cosmos, the Guardians of the Galaxy continue to establish new frontiers in space (including opening the door to Marvel's spacefaring cult favorite Warlock, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and given definition by Thanos' creator Jim Starlin), and there's still some two decades of Captain Marvel's galactic crusade against the Kree to catch up on.
