When the Roman soldier enrolled in service to the state, he swore a military oath known as the sacramentum: originally to the Senate and Roman People, later to the general and the emperor. The sacramentum stated that he would fulfill his conditions of service on pain of punishment up to and inclusive of death. Discipline in the army was extremely rigorous by modern standards, and the general had the power to summarily execute any soldier under his command. Polybius divides the punishments inflicted by a commander on one or more troops into punishments for military crimes, and punishments for "unmanly acts", although there seems to be little difference in the harsh nature of the punishment between the two classes.

One of the first artists to popularize the pronunciation as beeatch or biatch as a refrain in the late 1980s was Oakland- based rapper Too $hort. Reaching back to the dozens and dirty blues, early rappers like Slick Rick established the bitch as a character: a woman, often treacherous, but sometimes simply déclassé. Adams and Fuller (2006) state that, in misogynistic rap, a bitch is a "money-hungry, scandalous, manipulating, and demanding woman". However, the word bitch is also frequently used (by male rappers) towards other men in rap lyrics, usually to describe a man who is a subordinate or homosexual, or a man who is supposedly unmanly or inferior in some way.

O'Donnell attempted to distance herself from the claim, stating that the consulting firm was no longer working for her campaign. Many players refused to wear helmets, either believing that they obstructed their vision when batting, or, just as in the similar debate in ice hockey, feeling helmets were unmanly, a view held by many spectators. Cricket was first seen being played on Dutch soil in the 1780s by an English traveller in Scheveningen, and by the turn of the 20th century, Dutch teams were touring England regularly. Cricket was one of the most popular sports in the Netherlands in the 19th century, surpassed since by many other sports, most notably association football. Cricket even found enough of a following to survive the German occupation of the country between May 1940 and May 1945. Kevin McMahon notes that the shrew is a recurring motif in Strange Tales, citing "Princess Yunluo" and other stories like "Ma Jiefu" and "The Raksha Kingdom" as examples of Pu's "(joining) ranks with fellow men in a collective sigh about the intolerable woman". Qing dynasty critic Feng Zhenluan () writes that the "best thing that could happen in this world" is when a shrew gets punished, whereas Feng's contemporary Dan Minglun () rebukes the spineless man — the foil to the shrew in Pu's stories — for being "unmanly". On the other hand, Yenna Wu argues that, like in his vernacular play Incantation Against Jealousy (), "Princess Yunluo" is offering a "positive portrayal of domestic prison ... in which (a scoundrel's wife) is the warder". An an extension of Wu's analysis, Judith Zeitlin credits Pu with the invention of the "benign shrew" who "paradoxically brings blessings rather than disaster to a household", unlike the "stereotypical" virago that appears in other Strange Tales entries as "Ma Jiefu" and "Jiang Cheng".

Simpson's first book Male Impersonators (1994) provided the background for his theory of metrosexuality by examining the way men were represented in popular culture – movies, ads, mags, music, male stripping, and comedy – and showing how 'unmanly' passions such as homoeroticism, male narcissism, and male masochism were not excluded but rather exploited, albeit semi-secretly, in voyeuristic virility. Because they once controlled access to the spirit world, and because the ceremonies involved begging the Clan spirits in what could be considered an unmanly fashion, Clan tradition holds that should a woman see one of the men's religious ceremonies, the clan in which this occurred would suffer disaster. When a ceremony invoking the weather spirits is held to sanction Ayla's hunting, especially strong protection was required for the men, both to guard against the presence of a female at the ceremony and because the ancient spirits were feared as much as they were honored in the days when they were worshiped.
