Aside from this one and the use of Bauhaus's "Slice of Life" in "Darkroom," I'm hard-pressed to remember any great music cues from this season, and I wonder if that may be contributing to the sense that this season felt just a little "off" by The Americans' (admittedly high) standards.

Sometimes the reasons for non-inclusion are obvious — Stryker has simply eliminated all but the best composed or least blurry in a series of similar shots — but in other instances there is a clear desire to editorialize the slice of life being presented by the project, for a cleaner, more edited version of history.

While this year's other best picture contenders tell stories that range from tender (Call Me By Your Name) to cuttingly timely (Get Out, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) to gripping and historical (Dunkirk, The Post, Darkest Hour) to exacting (The Phantom Thread) to sublimely fantastical (The Shape of Water), Greta Gerwig's slice of life story remains a standout for its verisimilitude and realistic portrait of a mother (Laurie Metcalf) and daughter dancing around each other in a torturous boomerang between love and hate.

Considering how easily pro athletes and celebrities manicure themselves for public consumption, it's just as easy to be skeptical of the warmness and earnestness Waterson displays elsewhere in the film, during slice-of-life moments where she disinfects tabletops with Lysol wipes and asks her daughter about circle time at school, suffering with a smile while elderly women in an elevator ask her about the crazy fighting stuff that she does, or tearing up while talking about her boxer husband going corporate to feed the family while she pursues dreams of fighting.
