The depiction of comets in popular culture is firmly rooted in the long Western tradition of seeing comets as harbingers of doom and as omens of world-altering change. Halley's Comet alone has caused a slew of sensationalist publications of all sorts at each of its reappearances. It was especially noted that the birth and death of some notable persons coincided with separate appearances of the comet, such as with writers Mark Twain (who correctly speculated that he'd "go out with the comet" in 1910) and Eudora Welty, to whose life Mary Chapin Carpenter dedicated the song "Halley Came to Jackson". In times past, bright comets often inspired panic and hysteria in the general population, being thought of as bad omens.

Halley's Comet or Comet Halley, officially designated 1P/Halley, is a short- period comet visible from Earth every 75–76 years. Halley is the only known short-period comet that is regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and the only naked-eye comet that can appear twice in a human lifetime. Halley last appeared in the inner parts of the Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061. Halley's returns to the inner Solar System have been observed and recorded by astronomers since at least 240 BC. Clear records of the comet's appearances were made by Chinese, Greeks, Babylonian, and medieval European chroniclers, but, at those times, were not recognized as reappearances of the same object.

November 17, 2011 His character no longer dies in every episode, and has only been killed occasionally in the seasons following his return. The most famous example of this came from "The Ring," where Kenny dies of syphilis after removing his purity ring in protest of the Jonas Brothers, or when, as his super-hero alter ego Mysterion, he pleads with the others to watch him return after killing himself. The first explanation given for Kenny's deaths and reappearances was given in "Cartman Joins NAMBLA", wherein the McCormicks have a baby exactly like Kenny, including the characteristic orange parka, shortly after the former Kenny dies. Mr. McCormick exclaims, "God, this must be the fiftieth time this has happened", to which Mrs.

From the fourth season onward, except for a couple of brief reappearances of the chauffeur (during the fourth season), Hogg drove himself around in his Cadillac (or occasionally driven by Rosco and, in the series' finale, by Uncle Jesse) and frequently challenged others by invoking his driving expertise from his days as a ridge-runner. Unlike other vehicles in the series, Boss Hogg's Cadillac is typically treated with kid gloves. The car is almost always seen with its convertible top down, with the top only being seen in two episodes, "Daisy's Song" (the chauffeur was called "Eddie" in this episode), the second to be produced and broadcast, and briefly in the second- season episode "Witness for the Persecution", when Cooter is returning it to the Court House after repairs.

These changes are often reactions against the prior cultural form, which typically has grown stale and repetitive. An obsession emerges among the mainstream with the new movement, and the old one falls into neglect – sometimes it dies out entirely, but often it chugs along favored in a few disciplines and occasionally making reappearances (sometimes prefixed with "neo-"). There is continual argument over the precise definition of each of these periods, and one historian might group them differently, or choose different names or descriptions. As well, even though in many cases the popular change from one to the next can be swift and sudden, the beginning and end of movements are somewhat subjective, as the movements did not spring fresh into existence out of the blue and did not come to an abrupt end and lose total support, as would be suggested by a date range.

Daisy's first car in the series is a yellow 1974 Plymouth Road Runner with a black stripe along the sides and over the roof. Although the car was intended to be a Plymouth Road Runner, later appearances in the second season used a 1971 Plymouth Satellite with a matching "Road Runner" stripe running along the sides and over the roof. The car meets its demise when the accelerator sticks while Bo and Luke are driving it during a chase in the second-season episode "The Runaway," sending it over a cliff. Because the episodes were broadcast in a different order to that in which they were filmed, the Plymouth makes several reappearances after its supposed destruction (additionally, after the Plymouth has been destroyed on- screen, several models of the car appear in various episodes with different paint jobs, serving as other vehicles within the context of the stories).

In the United Kingdom, "Sex on Fire" entered at number one on the official UK Singles Chart on September 14, 2008 ― for the week ending date September 20, 2008 ― and went on to an unbroken 42 weeks on the chart, only dropping out due to the surge in sales of Michael Jackson titles immediately after his death, but after a two- week absence it was back for another 37 weeks, re-entering the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart at number six in September 2009. Further reappearances extended its tally of weeks to 90, making it the third most charted single of all time. In Germany, the single debuted at number 97 on the German Singles Chart, and began to rise and fall in the next several weeks. In its 32nd week on the chart, the song finally reached its peak of number 33.

Of the twenty-nine entries of the theme, twenty-five are extreme metric departures from the original, so that the fugue is concurrently a series of twenty-five variations. The fugue as such, no more Turkish than the European fashions aped in Istanbul during her decadent ‘Tulip period’ (1703–30), does exhibit two indubitably Ottoman peculiarities: The thirty-six rapid changes of mode heard in the solo ‘cello part, but also distributed three each among the twelve fugal pairs, derive from the esoteric compositional genre külliyat; and the sudden disappearances and reappearances among the twice-twelve parts after all have entered is in the karabatak or ‘cormorant’ style (named for the aquatic fowl that so erratically dart in and out of water). The coda lays out the Ottoman and Qing scales in parallel, first ascending and then descending, while the snare drum plays the solo ‘cello’s rhythm from the last bar of the fugue, first forwards (while the scales ascend) and then backwards (while they descend).

Of the great movie comedians, Chaplin is rooted in Dickens and the nineteenth-century stage; Keaton, more cinematic, in a kind of melancholic Civil War stoicism. Only the Marxes seem contemporary with Dada. There is no logic or pathos or point or even much structure to it—the fourth wall is broken, then restored, and then broken again. Napoleon’s appearances and reappearances from the Russian front are as arbitrary as a Magritte drawing—and the scene’s moral, to the degree that it has one, is the nihilistic one that runs true in comedy from Aristophanes to Sid Caesar: all authority is always ridiculous, and man (and woman) runs by appetite alone. All of Monty Python’s non sequiturs and sudden stoppages—"the sketch is now over"—begin here, as does most of the pure burlesque aggression of a Mel Brooks, whose historical kidding, as in the “2000 Year Old Man” skits, starts here, too.

She found her largest audience as Erica Davidson, the governor of the fictional Wentworth Detention Centre on the cult soap opera Prisoner, (as well as appearing in a spin-off stage play), in 1979 King was an original member of the cast in a role that was originally offered to Googie Withers, who had played the governor in the British prison series Within These Walls she left in 1983, but returned for guest reappearances in 1984, after which she retired from television. King has appeared in numerous theatre roles including both modern period pieces since the early 1950s, and although retired from the small screen, she appeared in the theatre production Love Letters in 2009. Her theatre stage credits include the Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, Blithe Spirit, Absurd Person Singular, A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur, Half a Sixpence, Love for Love. She earned the Erik Award for her portrayal of Agnes in Fourposter, and has also received the Melbourne critics' award.

Much of her photography involves the innovative use of alternative cameras, formats, techniques, and media, as evidenced by her two books Encountering FlorenceSusan Hacker Stang, Encountering Florence (St. Louis, Webster University Press, 2007) (featuring subtly surreal black and white prints of the Italian city using 8 x 10 Polaroid emulsion transfers) and Kodachrome – End of the Run: Photographs from the Final BatchesBill Barrett and Susan Hacker Stang (editors), Kodachrome – End of the Run: Photographs from the Final Batches (St. Louis: Webster University Press, 2011) (which chronicles a six-month university photography project in which students and staff would shoot more than 100 roles of rare Kodachrome film for processing on the last day of operations by the world's last remaining Kodachrome processing lab.) In 2016, she published a book of photographs, reAPPEARANCES, which is a sequence of fifty-two photographs made with a digital toy camera (the JOCO VX5). The volume purports to take the viewer on a visual journey through the uncanny coherence of the look of the world, according to Stang's introductory essay.

Following the international focus on the disappearances, there were virtual reappearances by two of the missing men, Lee Bo, in the form of letters and photographs, and Gui Minhai, in a confessional video broadcast on national television, in which they insisted that their return to mainland China was voluntary but which failed to account for their movement across national borders. Lam indicated the involvement of the Central Investigation Team, which is under direct control of the highest level of the Beijing leadership.
