Many families come together through different artistic practices; My Parade, based in Seattle, is a chosen family band comprised of five queer and trans punks of color, who are carving out a space for themselves in their majority-white punk scene.

I moved to the city a year before Kelly did, and when we were finally reunited, every free moment was spent at DIY spots watching bands and drinking 40s of Hurricane and Sparks with the motley assortment of bike messengers, travelers, punks, metal kids, and assorted troublemakers that we called friends.

Black Tusk are the last metal punks standing from that scene, and T.C.B.T. However, these Swedes deftly illustrate what can happen when a genre first forged by a bunch of young anarcho-punks who possessed little more than a few beat-up guitars, a passing familiarity with the concept of tuning their instruments, and something to say is exposed to heavier metallic elements and filtered through modern equipment.

But the reality is that anybody that was serious about music and art that was involved in the punk scene could see that it was basically the same Bohemian impulse -- the pursuit of freedom and meaning in a meaningless world -- that motivated the punks and the hippies and Beats before them and the jazzers before them, and so on.

There have been books and magazine articles talking about how [white supremacist punks from Huntington Beach] were running things and committing all the crime, but I think inner-city punk rockers saw this influx of people coming into the scene from Huntington Beach, and they developed a misconception that all this violence was coming from the Beach, too.

But through the years, there have been as many ways to wear it as style communities that exist: buttoned up all the way for Brooklyn preps, worn tied up for Catholic-school dropouts, with just the top button closed for latino rockabillies, slashed and with safety pins for mall punks, and casually buttoned with a J.Crew cuff for fashion obsessives.

The monolithic riffs (and rolling clouds of smoke) that doom titans like Usnea, Conan, Inverloch (who added liberal doses of ugly, decimating death metal) and Monolord called forth from the void were aptly balanced by fast, cold, ugly blasts of black metal from Naðra, Misþyrming, Taake, Balmog, Infra, and Marduk, while Possession and the mighty Incantation held it down for pure death metal destruction amd Doom kept the punks bouncing.
