After all, the best demagogues know that one of the most important skills to have is the ability to play off your most offensive and outrageous statements as having been nothing more than mere slips of the tongue or unfair misinterpretations by the media should the backlash against your statements get a little too hot.

But we do know enough about demagogues in history to know that when you engage in that kind of action and rhetoric as we're seeing it from the highest office of our country, aided and abetted by a huge echo chamber … There are people, this guy has a criminal record, there are unbalanced people.

And we have channels of information that have been deeply polluted by the braying of demagogues and television hacks, conflicting guidance from political leaders, and guerrilla misinformation distributed widely across new media channels—a cacophony of noise and nonsense that has convinced many Americans, in the absence of universally trusted authorities, to respond to this particular situation simply by doing what they personally see fit, which is often absolutely nothing.

It was a turning point for Sanders: The villains in that speech are not Americans meddling in Chile or invading Iraq, but the "the authoritarian axis"—a phrase that echoed Bush's "axis of evil"—and in Sanders' telling includes countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, Turkey and Brazil, where there are "movements led by demagogues who exploit people's fears, prejudices and grievances to gain and hold on to power" and are also handmaidens to billionaires and oligarchs, more familiar Sanders boogeymen.

It's an era in which misinformation and fake news have proliferated on the web; Russia is flooding the West with propaganda to affect elections and sow doubts about the democratic process; poisonous tensions among ethnic and religious groups are fanned by right-wing demagogues; and reporters scramble to sort out a cascade of lies and falsehoods told by President Trump and his aides — from false accusations that journalists had invented a rift between him and the intelligence community (when he had compared the intelligence agencies to Nazis) to debunked claims that millions of unauthorized immigrants robbed him of a popular-vote majority.
