The Rapscallions are in fear of Cregga Rose Eyes, the ruler of Salamandastron. Tunn's two sons, Byral Fleetclaw and Damug Warfang, fight to the death to determine who will be the new commander of the Rapscallions. Damug kills Byral through treachery and takes over control of the army, which he commands to move inland. At Redwall Abbey, the inhabitants discover that the south wall is mysteriously sinking into the ground.

The Rapscallions, formed in 1980 by four Bowling Green State University (Ohio) students, won the 1984 international quartet championship in St. Louis, Missouri. The quartet placed in the top ten internationally each of the three years they competed: ninth place in 1982, sixth in 1983, and first in 1984. Tenor Dave Smotzer, lead David Wallace, baritone Tim Frye, and bass Jeff Oxley formed the quartet in 1980 while working summer jobs in Cedar Point, Ohio, to earn money to return to the university. All were members of the A Cappella Choir and the Men's Chorus at the school and had other musical training.

The most recent championships, in 2014 and 2018, came under the direction of Jim's son Greg Clancy, the current Musical Director of VM. Vocal Majority has released over twenty recordings and has traveled extensively domestically and internationally. Most recently, in May 2015, VM was the featured guest performers at The British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) Convention in Llandudno, Wales. Several members of Vocal Majority have also won the International Quartet Championship with the quartets Max Q, Acoustix, Side Street Ramblers, Dealer's Choice, Rural Route 4, Rapscallions and Old School. In July 2017, VM vocal coach and member Tony DeRosa, who performed with the group in their 2014 International championship performance, won his fourth Quartet Championship, this time with Main Street quartet.

Through no fault of his own, he tells the con men everything they need to know about a fortune to be inherited in the Wilkes family, and they crash the funeral as impostors to go about securing their riches ("How Blest We Are"). Huck — through it all a pure soul — sees that the beautiful and innocent Mary Jane Wilkes is being robbed of her rightful inheritance by these "rapscallions", and steals back her money from the King and the Duke as she mourns her father's coffin ("You Oughta Be Here With Me"). He quickly stuffs the gold into her father's coffin and hides behind it to avoid notice. When Mary Jane realizes what Huck has done, she asks that he remain with her and become her friend.

Biehl criticizes the perceived lack of concern for morality among post-left anarchists such as Bob Black. Allan Antliff described the work as "abusive", and said that its distribution by the Workers Solidarity Alliance belied the organisation's pretensions of anti- sectarianism.
