A re-recorded version of "What We Have Known" later appeared as the B-side to the "Sprout and the Bean" single and the title track is otherwise unreleased. Kalmar was conscripted into the Russian Navy in 1914 and trained as a submarine navigator, but served as captain on several surface vessels supporting Russia's Baltic submarine fleet. After the start of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Kalmar was able to escape to the east, avoiding the Bolsheviks. He and his fiancé, Helmi Sild Kalmar (1894–1982), were married in Tomsk, Siberia in 1918 and continued to Vladivostok. In 1919, Kalmar sailed to Shanghai on the same ship as Peter Mender.

In Shanghai, Kalmar and his wife and three children shared a home with the Roos family. Kalmar captained cargo ships, primarily for Moller & Co., until returning to Estonia in 1932. In September 1944, Kalmar and some relatives left one of Estonia's westernmost islands on a fishing boat arranged for them by Peter Mender, who had reached Sweden earlier, and crossed the Baltic Sea without being stopped by Russian or German ships. Kalmar and his wife and daughter settled in Sweden.

Joanna Caroline Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American multi- instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and actress. Born and raised in Northern California, Newsom was classically trained on the harp in her youth, and began her musical career as a keyboardist in the San Francisco–based indie band The Pleased. After recording and self-releasing two EPs in 2002, Newsom was signed to the independent label Drag City. Her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released in 2004 to critical acclaim, and garnered Newsom an underground following.

During this time she extended her repertoire, studying traditional Indian, Indonesian, and Chinese dance as well as modern dance, the latter at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York City. In 1988 Goh was commissioned to produce a work for the Singapore Festival of Arts. That work, which was influenced by Chinese mythology, became Nu Wa – Mender of the Heavens, Singapore's first full-length modern dance production. The Straits Times called Nu Wa the nation's "most significant modern dance ever produced".

David Patterson (born 1948) is a historian and professor at the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies, University of Texas at Dallas. Patterson's areas of expertise are Holocaust, Jewish Thought, Anti-Semitism and Israel. He is the Hillel A. Feinberg Distinguished Chair in Holocaust Studies. Patterson is author of a study of Holocaust memoir literature and said that reading of first person testimonials has a function, the reader "must become not an interpreter of texts but a mender of the world, a part of the recovery that this memory demands".

Japanese tissue is used in the conservation of books and manuscripts. The tissue comes in varying thicknesses and colors, and is used for a variety of mending tasks, including repairing tears, mending book hinges, and reinforcing the folds of signatures (the groups of pages gathered and folded together at the spine) or for reinforcement of an entire sheet through backing. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 85, indicating "universal acclaim". Chris Dahlen of Pitchfork called Ys "great because Newsom confronts a mountain of conflicting feelings, and sifts through them for every nuance". Describing it as "incredibly likeable, and more convivial than the twee Milk Eyed Mender", Jimmy Newlin of Slant Magazine dubbed Ys "a precious—in every sense of the word—masterpiece".

Invisible mending is a sophisticated weaving method consisting in rebuilding the fabric of a damaged garment or upholstery, following damage caused for example by a snag, burn, or accidental scissor cut. In such an incident, both the warp and the weft of fabric may have been damaged. Invisible mending is the reconstruction of both the warp and weft using a long needle. The mender garners the material for the repair by picking all the necessary weft from the hem, and the warp from the extra fabric on the inside of longitudinal seams.

In 2006 she established a school of midwifery with the aim of putting a trained midwife in every village in Ethiopia. The mender will reconstruct the warp and weft to match the original weave exactly. After this is done and the garment has been pressed, the mended part will be undetectable on the outside of the fabric, though on the reverse side the restored area will be marked by long hanging threads where the re-weaving was done. These hanging threads occur because (unlike in darning work) invisible mending is done without tacking, in case it deforms the fabric. Notions was considered someone who could apply his manual skills to many different trades and crafts. He was described during his lifetime as "a singular instance of an uncommon variety of talents, being a tailor, a joiner, a clock and watch-mender, a blacksmith, and a physician". He was additionally attributed with being (at various periods throughout his life) a farmer, fisherman, and weaver. Scholars state that Qinqiang reflects on the personalities and experiences of the working people, as it was impacted by the war and the influence of Western culture and art. The fourteenth version of the play Bozhong Lotus in the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620 A.D.) has been frequently cited as one of the most important and authoritative. The play tells the tale of Gu Lao-er, a cylinder mender. Scholar Qin Bao has stated that the play's seven- character sentence pattern is direct evidence of the formation of the Qinqiang opera plate cavity and that its plot and folk expression is evidence of Qingiang's folk production.

Bedford respected margins, and was a skilful mender of damaged leaves. Many of his productions were imitations of the major French bookbinders of past centuries, for example the bindings of Samuel Rogers's Poems and Italy, of which he bound several copies in Morocco inlaid with coloured leathers and covered with gold tooling in the style of Antoine Michel Padeloup. Lee also explores the concept of the gift in his work, drawing particular inspiration from Lewis Hyde’s book The Gift: Creativity and the Artist in the Modern World. In 2009, for La Biennale de Lyon, Lee created The Moving Garden (2009 - present), a piece consisting of a granite slab from which visitors may take flowers. The visitors are then meant to bring the flower out of the museum, diverge from the path they would normally take, and along the way give the flower to a stranger. The Danish nobility of the period had secured to themselves a monopoly on a number of administrative offices; this preference continued until 1620. Jørgen Friis was a member of that small class of upper nobility whose members could aspire to the highest positions in Denmark- Norway, including membership on the national council (riksråd). He became Governor-general of Norway (statholder) in 1601 and initiated a major effort to revise the Norwegian law. His activity led to issuance of Christian IV’s Norwegian Law of 1604, which as essentially a translation into Danish of the older Norwegian law of Magnus law-mender established and recorded in Norwegian in 1274 and 1276.

King Magnus Lagabøte carried out a great effort to modernize the law-code, which gave him his epithet, Magnus the law-mender (Magnús lagabœtir). In 1274, Magnus promulgated the new national law (Magnus Lagabøtes landslov), a unified code of laws to apply for the Kingdom of Norway, including the Faroe islands and Shetland. This replaced the different regional laws which had existed before. A unified code of laws for a whole country had until then only been introduced in the Kingdom of Sicily in the Liber Augustalis promulgated in 1231 by Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor and the Fuero Real compiled during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile.

After peace talks failed, his forces met with the Scots at Largs, in Ayrshire. The battle proved indecisive, but it did ensure that the Norse were not able to mount a further attack that year. Haakon died overwintering in Orkney, and by 1266, his son Magnus the Law-mender ceded the Kingdom of Man and the Isles, with all territories on mainland Scotland to Alexander III, through the Treaty of Perth. Orkney and Shetland continued to be ruled as autonomous Jarldoms under Norway until 1468, when King Christian I pledged them as security on the dowry of his daughter, who was betrothed to James III of Scotland.

Magnus Lagabøtes bylov ("Magnus Lagabøte's City Law") was promulgated for Bergen in 1276 during the reign of King Magnus VI of Norway (known as Magnus lagabøte or "law-mender"). Oslo, Trondheim and Tønsberg received their own versions of the City Law about the same time, without the exact year being known for when they were adopted. The City Law was based on the State Law of Magnus Lagabøte, adopted in 1274, and the Bjarkøyretten, Trondheim's old city law, which came into force during the 1100s.

In an effort to quell opposition to the merger/ conversion, Macy's made a formal statement of its intent to continue the traditions of a Christmas tree, a seventh floor "Frango" viewing kitchen, and animated holiday window displays. On November 3, 1945, American illustrator Norman Rockwell drew a picture of one of the Marshall Field's Building clocks on the cover of the famous "Saturday Evening Post" magazine, entitled "The Clock Mender". The Rockwell painting shows a man perched atop a ladder and adjusting one of the Marshall Field's clock to correspond with his own pocket watch. The old Oriental Theatre in the background proves this depicts the matching "Great Clock" at the northwest corner of the building at State & Randolph Streets.

Most of the reviews made note of the album's varied styles and sprawling nature, and that while a longer album than Ys the orchestral arrangements are scaled-back and less ornate in comparison to Van Dyke Parks' arrangements on that album. The Observer noted that just as Ys was a considerately more ambitious album than The Milk-Eyed Mender, Have One on Me represented a "correspondingly Knievel-like vault". The Wire magazine as well as several other reviews noted the expansion of Newsom's musical palette to include instruments such as tambura and kaval, while other critics including Pitchfork drew comparison to Joni Mitchell's 1970s material.

As the novel ends, Sayyid Ali Sahib highlights Hari and his sister's resolve to adapt and change in this growing and ever developing world. Anita Desai has explicitly described in her very own style of writing, and she shows how Hari in the dilapidated conditions of the Sri Krishna Eating House finds warmth and affection through Mr Andal Panwallah – owner and watch mender of the Ding-Dong watch shop.

In 1948, Rockwell donated the original painting, "The Clock Mender", to the store, where it had hung on the seventh floor ever since. After Target Corporation sold Field's to the May Department Stores, which later merged with Federated Department Stores in 2005, the Federated officials discovered a reproduction copy on display. Federated removed the fake copy and asked Target to return the original. The painting has since been donated to the Chicago Historical Society, which had from February 26, 2000 to May 21, 2000 been the second stop of the seven-city national tour of "Pictures for the American People", the first comprehensive Rockwell career exhibition that had been organized by the High Museum of Art of Atlanta and the Norman Rockwell Museum of Stockbridge, Massachusetts and that had also visited the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., San Diego Museum of Art and Phoenix Art Museum.

Have One on Me is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom, released on February 23, 2010 via Drag City as the official follow-up to the harpist's highly acclaimed second studio release, 2006's Ys. It is a triple album produced by herself and mixed by long-time collaborators Jim O'Rourke and Noah Georgeson, with the accompanying arrangements by Ryan Francesconi. Have One on Me continues Newsom's use of cryptic, pastoral lyrics, with a further progression of elements of her sound such as the orchestral accompaniment and the arrangements – with the inclusion of diverse instruments like the tambura, the harpsichord and the kaval. The production also flirts with genres such as jazz and blues in some of the tracks, while adding drums and the electric guitar in others. The album is also her first since The Milk-Eyed Mender to include songs played on the piano instead of the harp.

Participants are invited to bring in something they would like to have mended or embellished, while they sit across from the mender and talk. After the mending, the visitors can then choose to take away their garment, or leave it at the gallery so that it may be attached to the spools on the wall, and return to collect it at the conclusion of the exhibition. In Sonic Blossom (2013 - present), participants are gifted a song. Classical singers approach a single museum-goer and ask if they would like to receive a gift. If the participant agrees, the singer leads them to a seat and begins to perform one of Franz Schubert’s Lieder. Lee was inspired to create the piece while helping his mother to recover from surgery, during which time the two would listen to Schubert’s Lieder. The presentation of Sonic Blossom at The Metropolitan Museum of Art was selected as “The Best Classical Music of 2015” and “The Best in Art of 2015” in the New York Times.
