Polysiphonia denudata is erect with repeatedly branched axes. Each branch consists of a central axis with 5 to 7 elongated pericentral cells all of the same length. Cortication occurs lower down, these corticating cells grow down in the grooves between the pericentral cells. The holdfast is discoid.

Most of the settlers were moved from Kangaroo Island to Holdfast Bay the site of present-day Glenelg, with Governor Hindmarsh arriving on 28 December 1836 to proclaim the commencement of colonial government in South Australia. Light had to work quickly as the settlers were eager to take possession of the land they had purchased and grew impatient waiting. The salt water Port River was sighted and deemed to be a suitable harbour, however there was no fresh water available nearby. This small alga grows to 20 mm high from a discoid holdfast and dark brown in colour. Very irregularly branched, creeping moss-like and terete. Branches easily seen to be constricted at intervals. Medulla, the inner cells, formed of thick- walled filaments and with a cortex of rows of elongated cells radially arranged compact cells.

At first the river was not used for larger ships. They had to land at Holdfast Bay until the port was charted.Parsons (1997), p.10. This early port was plagued by mosquitoes, was a comparative long distance from Adelaide, had few amenities and had a risk of inundation when the tide was very high.

The lamina is often much branched and may include gas-filled bladders. Growth is by division of the apical cells. They are oogamous - fusion between the small male gamete and the large female gamete.

Halimeda tuna is a calcareous green seaweed, attached to the seabed by a holdfast. Each individual thallus (frond) consists of a single cell forming a tube with multiple cell nuclei. Neoplecostomus is a genus of fish in the family Loricariidae native to South America. Neoplecostomus can be distinguished from all other loricariids by a modified shield of small plates on the abdomen with posteriorly directed odontodes; the shield appears to act as a holdfast. The color pattern is generally mottled brown with the abdomen white. The head is long, rounded, and shovel-shaped.

Saccharina latissima is a yellowish brown colour with a long narrow, undivided blade that can grow to long and wide. The central band is dimpled while the margins are smoother with a wavy edge. A geniculate habit, with reference to the red algae, is one in which the alga branches, tree-like, forming "fronds" that attach to the substrate with a holdfast. Non-calcified "genicula" serve as "knees" or hinges between the calcified intergenicula. The Glenelg tyre reef is a series of tyre tetrahedrons that were deployed in 1983. According to the Scuba Divers Federation of South Australia, it is now in a state of decay. It is located 5 kms west of Glenelg in 18 metres of water. Two ships have been scuttled in Holdfast Bay, the Glenelg barge and the South Australian, known colloquially as The Dredge.

Juvenile giant kelp grow directly on the parent female gametophyte, extending one or two primary blades, and beginning a rudimentary holdfast, which will eventually cover the gametophyte completely. D. willana has smaller blades than D. antarctica and is usually found lower on the shoreline because its tolerance of wave action is not as great as D. antarctica. This species is chocolate brown in colour and is darker than all other bull kelp species. The holdfast becomes large and spreads like a plate on rocky substrates.

On 20 March 1836, Morphett sailed for South Australia in the Cygnet, which arrived at Kangaroo Island on 11 September 1836. On 5 November 1836, the Cygnet arrived at Holdfast Bay. Next day, with Lieutenant Field and George Strickland Kingston, he explored the River Torrens. With others on the Cygnet, he also identified the mouth of the Port River, identified the suitability of Port Adelaide, and visited Port Lincoln with Light.

Davis came into the sport through surf lifesaving. She is a member of the Holdfast Bay Canoe Club. She primarily trains in Adelaide, with a secondary training base in the Gold Coast, Queensland. She has a canoe scholarship with the South Australian Sports Institute and the Australian Institute of Sport. Annulatubus, meaning ringed tube, possesses a long tube-like structure with uniformly spaced ridges. At lengths between 178mm, and 250mm, and widths between 15mm and 50mm it is significantly larger than most other tube-like fossils of the Ediacaran. It is described as having a similar ringed tube structure to Sekwitibulus but differs in size and ridge shape. It is unknown if Annulatubus possessed a holdfast like other similar Ediacarans.

Fronds are thin, leafy, and flat, with narrow or wide lobes, and grow on short stems from a fibrous, bulbous holdfast. The Eocrinoidea are an extinct class of echinoderms that lived between the Early Cambrian and Late Silurian periods. They are the earliest known group of stalked, arm-bearing echinoderms, and were the most common echinoderms during the Cambrian. Sir John Hindmarsh, the division's namesake Though initially based on the greater Port Adelaide area to the north of the present boundary, now represented by the Division of Port Adelaide, Hindmarsh has long been dominated by working-class families and aged pensioners. Redistributions from the late 1940s onward have moved Hindmarsh clear of its initial boundaries over time to include increasingly wealthy seaside suburbs in and around Glenelg and the Holdfast Bay area to the south. With only the two additional seats of Adelaide and Boothby covering the metropolitan area until 1949, the south-east state border rural seat of Barker was then considered a "hybrid urban-rural" seat, stretching all the way from the southern tip of South Australia at least as far as Glenelg and the Holdfast Bay area, and at times even stretched as far as the western metropolitan suburbs of Keswick and Henley Beach. Chondrus crispus is a relatively small sea alga, reaching up to a little more than 20 cm in length. It grows from a discoid holdfast and branches four or five times in a dichotomous, fan-like manner. The morphology is highly variable, especially the broadness of the thalli. The branches are 2–15 mm broad and firm in texture, and the color ranges from light to dark green, dark red, purple, brown, yellowish, and white.

The South Australian Railways Gd Class Locomotives were built by Beyer, Peacock and Company for service on the Holdfast Bay railway line in 1880. They were numbered 4 and 5. Pleurophycus gardneri is a habitat to many species of amphipod, and most commonly supports species specific to stipe burrowing. Amphipods decrease the lifespan of this kelp due to damages caused by burrowing; any breaks in the plants' holdfast up to its stipe will kill the plant, hence its heightened mortality rate due to stipe burrowing amphipods. Breaks above the abscission zone of the plants' frond will not kill the plant, but may still decrease fitness.

The Holdfast Bay railway line was a railway in western Adelaide. The line started in the city from the Adelaide railway station, and then headed west. From approximately where Henley Beach Road currently is, the railway then followed an almost direct route to the seaside suburb of Glenelg. Today, much of the corridor in which the line ran remains as a rail trail for cyclists, which is known as the Westside Bikeway.

Pterygophora californica is a large brown seaweed and may grow to about three metres in height. The thallus of this species is dark red in colour and tough in texture, it grows to 30 cm long and 1 cm wide. It is perennial and attached by a discoid holdfast, it grows in tufts, erect, firm and cartilaginous. All the axes and branches are compressed or flat with an inconspicuous central midrib. The lateral branches are short and are produced alternately from near the base, they are deeply toothed.

It is typically found along the southern Atlantic coast of Africa, from the very south of South Africa to northern Namibia. In these areas the species dominates the shallow, temperate water, reaching a depth of up to in the offshore kelp forests. The kelp anchors itself by attaching itself to a rock or other kelp via its holdfast.

It grows from a discoid holdfast stipe, the fronds are channelled unlike those of Chondrus crispus which are flat. It grows to a height of 10 to 20 cm and branches dichotomously. The frond is cartilaginous and reddish-brown in colour, showing a greenish or purplish tinge. The mature algae show reproductive structures which develop on erect filaments up to 1 mm in diameter, these make it readily distinguishable from Chondrus crispus.

The Brighton Jetty Classic was the winner of the Event Category in the 2006 Recreation & Sport Industry Awards, and The City of Holdfast Bay Major Event Award 2007. They are generally brown or dark green in color and consist of a holdfast, a stipe, and a frond. Oogonia and antheridia occur in conceptacles embedded in receptacles on special branches. Some species have berrylike gas-filled bladders that help the fronds float to promote photosynthesis.

The Mist Rocks () are a group of insular rocks close northwest of Holdfast Point at the entrance to Lallemand Fjord, Graham Land, Antarctica. They were mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in 1956–57. The name arose locally; the first Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey party sledging north from Detaille Island on August 21, 1956, discovered these rocks by chance while searching in the mist for a secure camp site.

In tapeworms there are two distinct classes of suckers, namely "bothridia" for true suckers, and "bothria" for false suckers. In digeneal flukes there are usually an oral sucker at the mouth and a ventral sucker (or acetabulum) posterior to the mouth. Roundworms have their sucker just in front of the anus; hence it is often called a pre-anal sucker. Among chordates, some fishes and mammals have suckers, which are used as a holdfast to substrata.

Zygnema is a genus of freshwater filamentous thalloid alga comprising about 100 species. A terrestrial species, Z. terrestre, is known from India. Zygnema grows as a free-floating mass of filaments, although young plants may be found anchored to streambeds with a holdfast. The filaments form a yellow-green to bright green colored tangled mat, and are composed of elongate barrel-shaped cells, each with two star-shaped (stellate) chloroplasts arrayed along the axis of the cell.

Fucus ceranoides is a species similar to other species of Fucus. It is linear to about 1 cm wide and is attached by a discoid holdfast. The branches grow to a length of 60 cm and show a clear midrib. Its margin is entire and it differs from Fucus serratus in not having a serrated edge and unlike Fucus vesiculosus it does not have air vesicles, however irregular swellings gives it a resemblance to F. vesiculosus.

It is most abundant on back reefs, on shallow patch reefs and on the lower surfaces of hard corals. In deeper water it forms thin semicircular plates projecting horizontally from vertical rock faces or from under overhangs. The encrusting form resembles Ralfsia and consists of irregular low-growing lobes attached to the substrate by a matted, rhizoidal holdfast. It grows in very shallow water on coral rubble, red mangrove prop roots and the waterlogged soils around mangroves.

Fossils of Drydenia consist of an elliptical blade attached to a branching filamentous holdfast, not unlike some species of Laminaria, Porphyra, or Gigartina. The single known specimen of Hungerfordia branches dichotomously into lobes and resembles genera like Chondrus and Fucus or Dictyota. The earliest known fossils that can be assigned reliably to the Phaeophyceae come from Miocene diatomite deposits of the Monterey Formation in California. Several soft-bodied brown macroalgae, such as Julescraneia, have been found.

Peltula is a genus of small dark brown to olive or dark gray squamulose lichens that can be saxicolous (grow on rock)) or terricolous (grow on soil). They are umbillicate with flat to erect squamule lobes that attach from a central holdfast or cluster of rhizenes.

The plan of the coupe which was code-named Operation Holdfast, came to light based on the statements given the arrested officers and was published in a parliamentary white paper. The plan called for quick deployment of troops to seize strategic positions and installations, cordon off Colombo preventing troops from the Panagoda Cantonment reaching Colombo. In the process detain the Prime Minister and government leaders. The service commanders and the IGP were kept unaware of the plan.

Four ships were converted from their role as merchants to carry and lay HAIS pipeline. These were HMS Latimer and HMS Sancroft at 7,000 tons; and HMS Holdfast and HMS Algerian at 1,500 tons. The larger two of the flotilla could each carry two lengths of HAIS pipeline; sufficient for the distance to Normandy. The smaller ships could only carry a single length of pipeline and were used to lay the pipes from Kent to the Pas de Calais.

However, A. wilsoni retains the embryos in cavities in the pinnules and brood the larvae as they develop. They are not released until the doliolaria larvae have lost their cilia and undergone metamorphosis, developing a stalk and holdfast. They fall to the seabed and immediately attach to the substrate, the mouth at the centre of the oral surface opens, the first tube feet emerge and they start to feed. The stem is later shed and the juvenile becomes free-living.

When submerged, the elasticity of the sac walls draws water into the thallus through the pores. Rapid photosynthesis produces a small oxygen bubble inside the sac which holds it toward the surface and the energy of the sun. The sac tapers to a short stipe, or stem, that connects to a small, disc-shaped holdfast which anchors the algae to the bottom. The stipe is relatively weak, but sufficient to anchor the algae given the low drag of the thallus.

Sir George Strickland Kingston purchased eighty acres (32 hectares) of land in 1839 in the area now known as Kingston Park. The house was built in two stages, firstly in 1840 and then in 1851. As such it is the oldest building in Holdfast Bay City Council and one of the oldest in the state of South Australia. In 1840 Kingston leased the premises to fellow Cygnet passenger, Robert Bristow, who began the first hotel in the Brighton-Marino district.

Leaving the passengers on Kangaroo Island, Duke of York sailed on 20 September 1836 to hunt whales, without ever continuing to Holdfast Bay. She called at Hobart Town from 27 September 1836 to 18 October to refresh and to proceed to the South Sea whaling grounds. On 10 February 1837 Morgan heard of the wreck of the schooner Active in the Fiji Islands. At Lakeba they took on board her master, Captain Dixon, her mate, Willings, and the supercargo, Wilkey.

David Packham (9 April 1832 – 4 April 1912) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1894 to 1896, representing the electorate of East Torrens. He had earlier been a Town of Kensington and Norwood councillor for 22 years, and was mayor from 1878 to 1880. Packham was born in Sussex, England, and his family migrated to South Australia when he was seven, arriving in Holdfast Bay on the Moffat on 16 December 1839.

The timing was important. Summer was a period when the Kaurna traditionally moved from the plains to the foothills, so that the initial settlement of the Adelaide area took place without any conflict. The population again severely declined upon the arrival of Anglo-European colonial settlers with South Australia Governor Captain John Hindmarsh as Commander-in-chief in December 1836 at Holdfast Bay (now Glenelg). According to an entry in the South Australian Register (30 January 1842), the Kaurna population numbered around 650.

Peramphithoe femorata is a tubicolous (tube- forming) amphipod that feeds and makes its home on the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera. This brown alga is found in shallow water and can grow to a length of in a single season. It is attached to the substrate by a holdfast from which grow several long slender stems. These are clad in numerous small leaf- like blades growing from pneumatocysts (gas-filled bladders) and it is on these blades that the amphipod lives.

She sailed from Gravesend on 27 July 1837 under the command of Captain Alfred Fell and arrived at Holdfast Bay, South Australia, on 17 October 1837. She carried 177 passengers, who came from England and Ireland. There were six aged over thirty, of whom five paid their own way. Black corals are so called because the main axial skeleton is made of a spiny, keratin-like substance called "antipathin" which is a dark brownish-black. This colonial coral has a bushy, two dimensional form and grows out of a holdfast firmly anchored to a rock. It can grow to tall and a similar width. The slender branches fork at intervals and divide pinnately, and the smallest pinnules are a few centimetres long and close together, forming a feather-like effect.

Charles Henry Hussey (27 September 1832 – 8 January 1899) was a politician in colonial South Australia. Charles was the youngest son of George Edward Hussey ( –1842) originally of Towcester, Northamptonshire, and his wife Catherine, née Burt (c. 1793–1874), who emigrated on the ship Asia to South Australia, arriving in Holdfast Bay in July 1839. While in the employ of Matthew Goode as a drapery salesman, Charles was attracted to Port Elliot and settled there, working for Mr. Mackie and Philip Greayer.

One daughter is a mobile "swarmer" cell that has a single flagellum at one cell pole that provides swimming motility for chemotaxis. The other daughter, called the "stalked" cell, has a tubular stalk structure protruding from one pole that has an adhesive holdfast material on its end, with which the stalked cell can adhere to surfaces. Swarmer cells differentiate into stalked cells after a short period of motility. Chromosome replication and cell division only occurs in the stalked cell stage.

Coromandel East is a semi-rural suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It lies within the City of Onkaparinga and has postcode 5157. Coromandel East, and its neighbouring suburb, Coromandel Valley, gain their name from a ship, the Coromandel, which arrived in Holdfast Bay from London in 1837 with 156 English settlers. After the ship reached the shore, some of its sailors deserted, intending to remain behind in South Australia, and took refuge in the hills in the Coromandel Valley region.

Leucothrix is a large bacterium that forms filaments between 2-3 µm wide and up to 0.5 cm in length. They are usually found as epiphytes on marine plants and algae, but also grow attached to other surfaces like the shells of crustaceans. Like the related genus Thiothrix, individual cells can be released from filaments, forming "gonidia", which can disperse and colonize new surfaces. On a new surface, the gonidial cells associate, produce a holdfast, and develop into rosettes of new filaments.

The bay was named by Colonel William Light, South Australian surveyor general, in mid-1836. In his journal he expressed his pleasure at the quality of the anchorage after riding out a storm. Holdfast Bay was the site of the landings in 1836 and 1837 by pioneers who were to set up the colony of South Australia. On 8 November 1836 Robert Gouger, Colonial Secretary and Chief Magistrate, arrived there aboard the Africaine and set up camp near The Old Gum Tree.

They are very large cells. They are able to attain these sizes without numerous internal cell wells because they build calcium carbonate shells around themselves. They contain only one nucleus in their vegetative stage, which remains in the bottom of the cell in the holdfast at the substrate. Only when they are ready to produce gametes does the nucleus undergo meiosis and then numerous mitoses into many nuclei which then migrate into the gametangia at the top of the alga.

The erect frond of dulse grows attached by its discoid holdfast and a short inconspicuous stipe epiphytically on to the stipe of Laminaria or to rocks. The fronds are variable in shape and colour from deep rose to reddish purple and are rather leathery in texture. Light decided that the Adelaide plains were the best location for settlement. Most of the settlers were moved from Kangaroo Island to Holdfast Bay with Governor Hindmarsh arriving on 28 December 1836 to proclaim the province of South Australia. The Port River was sighted and deemed to be a suitable harbour, but there was no fresh water available nearby. The River Torrens was discovered to the south and Light and his team set about determining the city's precise location and layout.

The germ tube develops into the hypha, protonema or thallus of the gametophyte. In seedless vascular plants such as ferns and lycopodiophyta, the term "sporeling" refers to the young sporophyte growing on the gametophyte. These sporelings develop via an embryo stage from a fertilized egg inside an archegonium and depend on the gametophyte for their early stages of growth before becoming independent sporophytes.

Siphusauctum is an extinct genus of filter-feeding animals that lived during the Middle Cambrian about 510 million years ago. Attached to the substrate by a holdfast, it had a tulip-shaped body, called the calyx, into which it actively pumped water that entered through pores and filtered out and digested organic contents. It grew to a length of only about . Siphusauctum gregarium was described in 2012 from numerous fossils recovered from the "Tulip Beds" strata of the Burgess Shale of Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada.

The tram made its last run along Brighton Road to Glenelg in February 1914. The shore from Holdfast Bay to Marino, was generally well visited by townspeople, who would take the hours ride from Adelaide to enjoy the beach and fresh sea breeze. Sundays in particular were popular, especially in fine weather. In Easter, holiday-makers could buy cool drinks, hot water and fruit from a tent set up on the beach, the proprietor paying a guinea fee to the Council to conduct business.

Nevertheless, it was a much fairer system than its predecessor. Hall undertook this knowing that it would considerably strengthen Labor's hand. Even at the height of the LCL's popularity under Playford, Labor had dominated Adelaide, with the LCL only able to win a few seats in the "eastern crescent" and around Holdfast Bay. With Adelaide now electing a majority of the legislature, conventional wisdom held that Hall pushed for electoral reform knowing that he was effectively handing the premiership to Dunstan at the next election.

Sargassum muticum is a brown seaweed, normally brown to yellowish with a length up to 10 m. It is an autotroph that uses energy from sunlight. The photosynthesis is facilitated thanks to aerial vesicles which allows the algae to raise to the surface. Sargassum muticum is composed of two distinct parts: a perennial part, which contains the holdfast and one or more short main axes; and an annual part: the secondary axes, which develop on the main axis, whose growth is unlimited and the size is variable.

In addition to lack of surface water, Light found navigation of Spencer's Gulf and entry into Boston Bay more hazardous. On 18 December he decided on the site of Adelaide for the new capital, and headed north to survey the coast north with a view to its being the site for a harbour. HMS Buffalo arrived at Holdfast Bay on 28 December. That same day Governor Hindmarsh landed and, all pre-requisites having been met, proclaimed the commencement of colonial government (henceforth celebrated as Proclamation Day).

The site chosen by Light spanned the River Torrens, or Yatala, as it was known by the local Kaurna people. One of the reasons he chose the location was because he observed that the Adelaide Hills would result in higher rainfall on the Adelaide plain. This was a promising indicator of good conditions for avoidance of drought-prone areas. Settlement sites on Encounter Bay, Kangaroo Island, Spencer's Gulf, the West coast of St Vincent's Gulf and Holdfast Bay (now known as Glenelg) had been rejected.

Hindmarsh's character was significantly altered in a redistribution ahead of the 2019 federal election. Neighbouring Port Adelaide was abolished, with the bulk of its territory transferred to Hindmarsh; as mentioned above, Hindmarsh had been based on Port Adelaide for much of the first half-century after Federation. At the same time, the Holdfast Bay area was transferred to Boothby. This had the effect of making Labor's hold on Hindmarsh much more secure; on the new boundaries, Labor's margin increased from 0.6 percent to a notional 8.2 percent.

The Holdfast Bay line was the most unprofitable of the two, this being partly due to excessive charges by the SAR for use of its line. Moves were made to close the line but these met with strong opposition as closure would isolate Glenelg from the rest of the state. To overcome this it was proposed to lay in a connection at Goodwood. In December 1899, the private company was acquired by the SAR, who continued to operate the line as a steam railway.

He was a Synodsman of the Church of England Christ Church, North Adelaide and a member of the North Adelaide Young Men's Society. He was from around 1890 a resident of Glenelg, and in 1898 was elected mayor of Glenelg council (now the City of Holdfast Bay). In 1899 he presented the Council with its mayoral chair, designed by the previous mayor, G. K. Soward and constructed of timbers from the wreck of . He died during the night of 20 October 1900 of a heart attack.

Niebla brachyura is recognized by a hemispherical thallus similar to the reindeer lichen Cladonia rangiferina, loosely attached to soil without a holdfast, intricately divided into thick rigid tubular prismatic branches irregularly forked near apex, the tips usually with black dot-like pycnidia, and by containing the lichen substance hypoprotocetraric acid. It grows with other species, notably Niebla arenaria, on mud flats near the ocean. Similar species are Niebla effusa, distinguished by containing the lichen substance salazinic acid, and Niebla pulchribarbara, distinguished by containing protocetraric acid.

The Holdfast Bay line was originally intended to become electrified with the Glenelg line, and small scale works on its conversion had begun, including drilling holes for power lines. However, with the onset of the Great Depression, conversion works were halted and steam services did not resume. Parts of the remaining corridor, primarily beyond Camden station, were sold to private holders in 1938, and the remainder to the South Australian Government in 1940. The MATS Plan in the 1960s proposed an expressway be constructed in the corridor.

His type-specimen is from Bodega Bay, California, but the species is found along the Pacific coast. The appearance of the plant is a holdfast on the bottom, with a stem-like stipe between there and the fronds which are about to . In life, the fronds hang vertically when the tide is in but flop over the stipe when exposed by low tide. Curiously, other specimens from this deposit collected and described by Massalongo in 1855 were actually trace fossils, only this one was a plant.

D. antarctica at Manurewa Point, in the Wairarapa The blades of Durvillaea antarctica are green to golden brown with a leathery texture. The honeycomb structure of the blade gives strength and buoyancy. This novel structure is thought to be responsible for the wide distribution of this genus, as the kelp is able to float when its holdfast fails. It can colonise other coastlines in this manner, and has been shown to carry communities of invertebrates across vast ocean distances from one shore to another.

"Bluff Jack Hindmarsh", as he came to be known,Kerr, Margaret Goyder Colonial Dynasty Rigby Limited, Adelaide 1980 arrived in Holdfast Bay on 28 December 1836, in the Buffalo. Prior to this, earlier arrivals included the Survey Brig , (carrying Colonel William Light's surveyors), , and . Initially they landed on Kangaroo Island, and sent out the team of surveyors led by Light to find a suitable place for the capital city of the new colony. Hindmarsh wanted it at Port Lincoln, instead of at the present site which had been selected by Light.

He taught school for 39 years in various locations including Ituna, Holdfast, Hafford, Rama, Speers and Regina. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Korchinski was provincial director of the Emergency Measures Organization and served as a judge for the Saskatchewan Citizenship Court. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a founding member of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. Korchinski wrote articles for the Ukrainski Visti () newspaper in Edmonton and authored the book Pioneer Bishop about Nykyta Budka.

Planctomycetes are a phylum of aquatic bacteria and are found in samples of brackish, and marine and fresh water. They reproduce by budding. In structure, the organisms of this group are ovoid and have a holdfast, at the tip of a thin cylindrical extension from the cell body called the stalk, at the nonreproductive end that helps them to attach to each other during budding. Cavalier-Smith has postulated that the Planctomycetes are within the clade Planctobacteria in the larger clade Gracilicutes, but this is not generally accepted.

The sea cow likely fed on several species of kelp, which have been identified as Agarum spp., Alaria praelonga, Halosaccion glandiforme, Laminaria saccharina, Nereocyctis luetkeana, and Thalassiophyllum clathrus. Steller's sea cow only fed directly on the soft parts of the kelp, which caused the tougher stem and holdfast to wash up on the shore in heaps. The sea cow may have also fed on seagrass, but the plant was not common enough to support a viable population and could not have been the sea cow's primary food source.

Gorgonian polyps in a reef aquarium A polyp in zoology is one of two forms found in the phylum Cnidaria, the other being the medusa. Polyps are roughly cylindrical in shape and elongated at the axis of the vase-shaped body. In solitary polyps, the aboral end is attached to the substrate by means of a disc-like holdfast called the pedal disc, while in colonies of polyps it is connected to other polyps, either directly or indirectly. The oral end contains the mouth, and is surrounded by a circlet of tentacles.

The 1980 replica of HMS Buffalo As a tribute, a static replica of Buffalo was built in 1980 on the shore of the Patawalonga River at Glenelg, a suburb of Adelaide, as a restaurant and museum. It was based on the original Admiralty specifications and plans, with some internal modifications (eg higher clear deck height). After a period of financial difficulties, the venture was closed and the vessel deteriorated. Despite large-scale redevelopment plans the City of Holdfast Bay announced in January 2019 that the replica would be demolished.

In 1919, the first sub-division occurred when land south of the Holdfast Bay railway line was sold for a new subdivision for returned servicemen's homes. In 1921, the area, which also included that part of Cummins Estate where Cummins House is located, was renamed to Novar Gardens to honour Viscount Novar, (who as Sir Ronald Munro Ferguson was the sixth Governor-General of Australia from 1914 to 1920). Holdfast Point () is both the northeast side of the entrance to Lallemand Fjord and the northwest side of the entrance to Chepra Cove on Pernik Peninsula in Graham Land, Antarctica, situated about southwest of Cape Rey. It was mapped from air photos taken by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–57), and was so named because when the pack ice breaks out to the north of Lallemand Fjord, it usually continues to hold fast for some time longer south of this point.

The evidence for this claim lies within the highly morphologically diverse body plans of the diploporitans: there are major differences in the makeup of the attachment structure (e.g., stem or holdfast), in the makeup of the feeding grooves, and even major differences in the construction of the group-defining diplopore respiratory structures. The only phylogenetic analysis of Diploporita to date indicates that Diploporita is not a natural evolutionary group. Rather, Diploporita is an artificial grouping based on the presence of diplopores, that have re-evolved multiple times throughout the echinoderm evolutionary tree.

Named after the once prominent Sheidow pastoralist family that previously owned nearly all the land in the area, Sheidow Park is a relatively new suburb; residential development began in earnest in the late 1970s. The Sheidow family, formerly resident at a mansion over-looking Holdfast Bay, now reside on a large estate beside Hallet Cove Beach. Reflecting the suburb's agricultural past is the former railway track that winds through the area - an agricultural route in times gone by. The suburb has been growing progressively larger, absorbing much of Trott Park.

Water currents knocked down the triangles in the same direction, and where they fall on top of other objects they flex over the top. When alive, the organism probably stuck to the microbial mats that bound the Ediacaran sea floor, standing on their tips like a pin in a pin cushion, so that the organism would have resembled an inverted cone. They probably fed on suspended particles. As there is no evidence for a holdfast anchoring them to the sea floor, it remains a matter of speculation how they were attached.

There are only five occurrences of Namacalathus (Namibia, Canada, Oman, Siberia, Paraguay) known to date, all of which are found in association with Cloudina fossils. Among the late Precambrian fossil assemblage in the Nama group, Namibia, Namacalathus far outnumber Cloudina and other poorly preserved taxa and ichnofossils found in the formation. The Nama Group fossils occur within thrombolitic facies of immense Proterozoic stromatolitic reefs. Namacalathus lived a benthic existence with its stalk attached to the sea floor by means of a holdfast, or possibly to algal mats growing on the reef surface.

These papers were innovative with regard to breeding of cereals and other commodities, linking the roles of geneticists, plant breeders and field experimentalists. Engledows breeding activities resulted in new varieties of wheat by selection (Rampton Rivet cultivated 1939–57, Squareheads Master 13/4, 1940–60), and by hybridisation (Holdfast, 1936–58 and Steadfast, 1941–53). In 1921 he married Mildred Emmeline Roper, a graduate botany student from Cape Town, South Africa. She gave up her academic activity to become his wife and expert adviser on a daily basis.

On the 25th of May 1880 the Holdfast Bay railway line was officially opened and a line from the Adelaide railway station, North Terrace to Glenelg through Richmond and Plyptom. These two lines were eventually amalgamated in 1881 and formed the Glenelg Railway Company. The Glenelg Railway Company in turn passed over the Government control on the 15th of December 1899. The Grange Railway Company built and operated a line between Woodville and Grange in 1882, which was then acquired by the South Australian Railways on 1 January 1893.

The ruffled form grows in ball- like clumps of wavy fronds as a result of the continued growth of the lateral blades. It is most often found in sandy areas and among turtle grass (Thalassia testudinem). It is usually anchored to the seabed or the prop roots of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle by a holdfast, but it sometimes forms loose masses which roll about with the movement of the water. The decumbent form grows in overlapping flat blades which may cover large areas of the seabed with a roof-tile like pattern.

Magic Mountain was a theme park in Glenelg, a beachside suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It opened in December 1982 and closed on 18 July 2004. Glenelg is a beach-side suburb of the South Australian capital of Adelaide. Located on the shore of Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent, it has become a tourist destination due to its beach and many attractions, home to several hotels and dozens of restaurants. Established in 1836, it is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia. Soon afterwards Africaine arrived, with Colonial Secretary Robert Gouger and other colonial officers anxious to know where the settlement should be situated. He suggested that the ships land at Holdfast Bay for the meantime, while he went with a group to explore further. The group encountered a group of Indigenous Australians for the first time at Rapid Bay (belonging to one of the Southern Kaurna tribes) and was reported to have established a friendly and cooperative relationship with them. Light then sailed across to Port Lincoln, on Spencer's Gulf, but found the area unsuitable.

The larger 2004–13 incarnation. Kingston began to move south from 1969 when the Holdfast Bay area was transferred to the newly created seat of Hawker. A redistribution ahead of the 1984 election made Hindmarsh far less safe for Labor. From then on, successive redistributions gradually gave it a voting pattern similar to mortgage belt seats, which tend to be fairly marginal. Labor's hold on the seat became even more tenuous in the redistribution prior to the 1993 election when it absorbed most of the area around Holdfast Bay that had previously been in abolished Hawker. This reduced Labor's two-party margin from an already marginal 5.3 percent to a paper-thin one percent.

Glenelg was an electoral district of the House of Assembly in the Australian state of South Australia from 1938 to 1985. The Holdfast Bay area has long been a conservative stronghold, and Glenelg was one of the few Adelaide-area seats where the Liberal and Country League consistently did well. The pattern was broken at the 1965 state election, when Glenelg was one of two Labor gains that helped Labor finally beat the Playmander and end 33 years of LCL rule. Labor retained the seat even as it lost government in 1968.

Species like Fucus vesiculosus produce numerous gas-filled pneumatocysts (air bladders) to increase buoyancy. In some brown algae, there is a single lamina or blade, while in others there may be many separate blades. Even in those species that initially produce a single blade, the structure may tear with rough currents or as part of maturation to form additional blades. These blades may be attached directly to the stipe, to a holdfast with no stipe present, or there may be an air bladder between the stipe and blade.

Vermilainia robusta is classified in the subgenus Vermilacinia in which it is easily recognized by its relatively small number basal tubular branches, generally 5–10 in number, often inflated and connected to a basal holdfast. Deflated forms can be difficult to distinguish from other related species, but generally recognized by the simple branches that are relatively broad to their short length, not more than 4 cm long, up to 6 mm in diameter. Lichen substances are typical of the subgenus: T3, zeorin, and (-)-16 α-hydroxykaurane, occasionally with salazinic acid.

Because the nucleus is safely hidden in the holdfast, the cells easily regenerate if the top portions are broken off. These algae are notable for having an intracellular network of 10 nm proteinaceous filaments, possibly for the storage and transport of ribonucleoprotein particles. Because of all these properties, and the fact that they are easy to manipulate they have been favorite organisms in the study of the role of the nucleus vs the unnucleated cytoplasm in the behavior of cells. Vermilacinia reptilioderma is classified in the subgenus Vermilacinia in which it is distinguished from related species by features of the cortex and secondary metabolites (lichen substances). The thallus is generally divided into slender whip-like cylindrical branches, usually numbering less than 20 that arise from a holdfast. The cortex is conspicuously rugose (with short wavy or sinuous ridges) above the mid region. Lichen substances are triterpenes referred to as T1 and T2, known only from several other species in the subgenus Vermilacinia in the central region of Baja California.

Reports on the Collections Obtained by the Allan Hancock Pacific Expeditions of Valero III off the Coast of Mexico, Central America, South America, and Galapagos Islands in 1932, in 1933, in 1934, in 1935, in 1936, in 1937, and in 1938, 2(14), 329–496. These flatworms typically occur in teleost fishes as sexually reproducing adults. In their intermediate hosts, which include mollusks and at least one amphibian, they occur as asexually reproducing stages. The characteristic feature is an anterior rhyncus or holdfast that is separate from the digestive system.

Hormosira banksii, also known as Neptune's necklace, Neptune's pearls, sea grapes, or bubbleweed) is a species of seaweed (brown algae, Fucales) native to Australia and New Zealand. It is abundant on low-energy rocky reefs at midtide levels, where it outcompetes other algal species due to its high tolerance to desiccation. This is because it has a slimy layer that conserves moisture. The thallus of this species is made up of strings of olive-brown, spherical, gas-filled pneumatocysts, which taper towards a small holdfast that is easily dislodged from the substrate.

Modern versions include waterproof bulkheads to provide additional flotation. The boat has been sailed for many years by 8 to 15 year olds at South Australian sailing clubs, with the first state championships being held in 1958 and still continuing on today . One of those clubs, the Port Lincoln Yacht Club, has continuously sailed the dinghy for over 50 years, and held their 50th Anniversary celebrations for the class in 2010 at the recent states and metropolitan championships. Niebla homaleoides is characterized by a rigid thallus divided into sub[terete] mostly strap- shaped branches spreading from a holdfast, to 8 cm high, and by the absence of lichen substances except usnic acid and an unknown suspected to be a scabrosin derivative. The species is best identified by chromatography such as high- performance liquid chromatography or thin-layer chromatography. The cortex generally resembles that of Niebla cornea, whereas comb-like branchlets on some thalli are similar to those of Niebla josecuervoi. Other thalli that have flattened branches are similar to Niebla flabellata.

The Glenelg Football Club was formed on 20 March 1920, and entered the South Australian League in 1921. It was not until 2 May 1925 that the club saw its first league victory, a 12.6 (78) to 10.10 (70) win over West Torrens at Glenelg Oval. "The Bays", as they are sometimes known (due to the club's proximity to Holdfast Bay), won their first SANFL premiership in 1934 with an 18.15 (123) to 16.18 (114) victory against Port Adelaide. The 1935 season saw them slump from first to last.

Five years later, the Corporate Town of Brighton was proclaimed immediately to the south of Glenelg council. In the half century from 1900 the Glenelg council was enlarged by four separate annexations of portions of the District Council of West Torrens, its north eastern neighbour. The municipality of Glenelg ultimately became the City of Glenelg when it crossed the required population threshold in the early 1900s. Glenelg and its southern coastal neighbour, the City of Brighton, were amalgamated in 1997 to become the City of Holdfast Bay, which retained the two civic centres at Glenelg and Brighton.

Skipper studied at Norwich Grammar School and was intended to follow his father into law, but his interest in art was encouraged by his uncle. In 1833, he left his study to become a midshipman on the Sherbourne for the East India Company. When he returned, he arranged to be articled to Charles Mann (appointed as the first Advocate-General of South Australia) and emigrate to the new Colony of South Australia on the arriving at Holdfast Bay on 6 November 1836. He travelled in intermediate class, but was reported to have taken his meals in the 1st cabin.

The conulariids are fossils preserved as shell-like structures made up of rows of calcium phosphate rods, resembling an ice-cream cone with fourfold symmetry, usually four prominently-grooved corners.Waggoner, B.M. & D. Stefan Ice Piedmont () is a small ice piedmont at the northwest extremity of Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast in Graham Land, overlying the coast between Cape Rey and Holdfast Point. Named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Josef Stefan (1835–1893), Slovenian physicist who in 1889 pioneered the theory of heat flow in a freezing ice layer (see Stefan problem) and first used it to calculate rates of sea ice growth in the Arctic.

The most notable greenspace in Richmond is Richmond Oval, on Milner Road. Currently named City Mazda Stadium, the 16,000 capacity venue has been the home base of the West Adelaide Football Club since 1958. The Westside Bikeway is a cycling and walking track adjacent to Deacon Avenue, on the alignment of the former Holdfast Bay railway line which closed in 1929. Richmond was also the home of the now closed Apollo Stadium, Adelaide's major indoor entertainment and sports venue from its opening in 1969 until the opening of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in 1991 and the Clipsal Powerhouse (now Adelaide Arena) in 1992.

Morphett was born in London to solicitor Nathaniel Morphett and his wife Mary, née Gliddon, of "Cummins", Ide, Devon. He travelled to Egypt in 1833 to meet up with his brother John. Together they toured Egypt and Italy before returning to England. He married Ann Hitchcock in 1835. When the Secondary Towns Association was formed in London in October 1838 for the purpose of establishing sites for secondary towns in the colony of South Australia, Morphett was appointed its Secretary. He emigrated to South Australia, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 12 December 1840 on the Brightman.

Hawker executed surveys in other parts of the colony, before resigning and returning to Government House to assist in the Private Secretary's office. He was present at the public dinner given to Colonel Gawler in 1840, and later in that same year he left for England in the ship Katherine Stewart Forbes. Finding that his two brothers, George and Charles, had themselves only just left for Australia, Hawker returned almost immediately to join them, sailing on the barque Siam. Leaving England in December 1840, he arrived back at Holdfast Bay in South Australia on 25 April 1841.

A year later they received news of the Proclamation of South Australia and he chartered a yacht and with a cargo of supplies headed for the new colony, arriving at Holdfast Bay early in 1837, Mary following in the Siren, on which yacht their second child, James Francis, was born. Daniel was a partner in the Adelaide Union Brewing Company opposite the office of the Southern Australian on Rundle Street in 1838. In August 1843 he took out a wine and beer licence for the "Harp Inn" (later "Harp of Tara") on North East Road, near Dry Creek.

Largely due to the addition of Holdfast Bay, Labor's already thin majority of 5.3 percent was pared back even further, to an extremely marginal 1.2 percent. Additionally, the election was called at a bad time for the state Labor government, which was still reeling from the collapse of the State Bank of South Australia. Indeed, the state Labor government would be heavily defeated at a state election later that year. Gallus took a substantial first-count lead and ultimately won on the eighth count, becoming only the second non- Labor MP ever to win the seat and the first since 1917.

The proclamation was drafted aboard by Hindmarsh's private secretary, George Stevenson, and printed by Robert Thomas (1782–1860), who came from England with his family on , arriving at Holdfast Bay on 8 November 1836. Thomas brought with him the first printing press to reach South Australia. The press was a Stanhope Invenit No. 200, and was on display in the State Library until 2001. It may be surmised that, from the quilled text of the proclamation provided to him by the officials, it was Thomas himself who made a more striking layout for print, later most familiar to the public.

Even while the economic boom continued, the LCL vote gradually declined after 1941. The LCL never held more than 23 seats during Playford's tenure due to being almost nonexistent in Adelaide. With few exceptions, its support in the capital was limited to the eastern crescent and the Holdfast Bay area even at the height of Playford's power. It relied on favourable preferences from minor parties and independents and the malapportioned electoral system in order to stay in office. It did, however, win a majority of actual votes, barring 1944 and 1953, on a two- party-preferred basis until 1962.

Until 1949, only three seats--Adelaide, Boothby and Hindmarsh—were based primarily on the capital. For most of the first half- century after Federation, Barker included Glenelg and the Holdfast Bay area, and at times stretched as far as the western metropolitan suburbs of Keswick and Henley Beach. However, it became an entirely rural seat after parliament was expanded in the redistribution prior to the 1949 election, making this already strongly conservative seat even more so. Barker had always included Kangaroo Island and the connecting Fleurieu Peninsula until parliament was expanded in the redistribution prior to the 1984 election.

Moseley Square is a public square in the City of Holdfast Bay at Glenelg, and was named for Henry J. Moseley, the builder and first publican of the Pier Hotel, Glenelg. Located between Jetty Road and Glenelg Beach, the Square is the location of the Glenelg Town Hall, Glenelg Jetty, the Stamford Grand Hotel and various fast-food outlets. It is the terminus of the Glenelg tram line (for many years the only tram line in Adelaide) from Adelaide. It is a site of major events including the Glenelg Jazz Festival and the City to Bay Fun Run.

An atrium on the lateral margin of each proglottid contains the openings to both the male and female genital ducts. Follicular testes produce sperm, which are carried by a system of ducts to the cirrus, an eversible copulatory organ that usually has a hypodermic system of spines and a holdfast system of hooks. The main specialized female reproductive organs are an ovary that produces eggs and a vitellarium that produces yolk cells. Yolk cells travel in a duct system to the oviduct, where, in a modified region, the ovum is enclosed in a shell with yolk cells.

Vermilacinia zebrina is classified in the subgenus Cylindricaria in which it is distinguished from related species by thallus divided into narrow cylindrical branches arising from a holdfast; branches are 1.0–4 cm long, 0.3–1 mm wide, shortly bifurcate near apex, and have soralia often larger than the diameter of the branch. Lichen substances are usually limited to zeorin and (-)-16-hydroxykaurane, in contrast to V. cephalota that usually has additional substances of depsidones, terpenes and bougeanic acid. Usnic acid, which has no taxonomic value in the genus, is present ln most if not all species in the genus.

Hussey was born in Wimborne, Dorsetshire or Kennington, London, the second son of George Edward Hussey of Poole, Dorset, who claimed Norman descent, and Catherine Hussey, née Burt. Hussey was educated at a dame school in a house once occupied by the poet William Cowper, and was first employed as office boy for a firm of brewers. In March 1839 George and Catherine Hussey and four of their children left for South Australia aboard Asia, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 16 July. The two eldest children, George Edward and Mary Ann, if surviving, do not appear on the ship's passenger list.

Adelaide railway station in 1878 The line was constructed to compete with the existing Glenelg railway line, (now the Glenelg tram), which ran from Victoria Square. Customer satisfaction on the existing line was becoming low. In response a group which had been attempting to improve conditions on the existing service decided to establish a company and construct a new railway in competition with the existing one. The Holdfast Bay Railway Company was established and the new line was opened on 24 May 1880 with a depot at St Leonards (now in the suburb of Glenelg North).

On 11 May 1882, the two merged to form the Glenelg Railway Company. A connecting line was laid along Brighton Road with both lines continuing to run services. Attempts to close the line met with strong opposition as it was argued closure would isolate Glenelg from the rest of the State. To overcome this it was proposed to lay in a connection at Goodwood. The Glenelg Railway Company was acquired by the SAR and steam services continued, with the Holdfast Bay line duplicated from Mile End to St Leonards by 1914, with raised platforms being provided at most stations. A branch line running across Bay Road (now Anzac Highway) was constructed to provide services to Morphettville Racecourse, though it did not make a connection with the other rail line.

In 1924, William A. Webb, the railways commissioner, proposed that the two Glenelg railways be given to the Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT) and be converted from steam railways into electric tramways. The government, following Mr Webb's recommendation, acquired both railways and electrification of the Glenelg railway line (now the Glenelg tram) began in 1929, taking nine months to finish. On the day when the Glenelg line conversion was completed in December 1929, South Australian Railways stopped running trains on the Holdfast Bay line. After the closure, the MTT began the operation of bus services from the city to Plympton.

Rural areas, excepting industrial towns such as Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie, were likely to support the LCL. The Adelaide area was overwhelmingly Labor; even at the height of Playford's popularity, the LCL only had a realistic chance of winning seats in the wealthy "eastern crescent" and around Holdfast Bay. By the early 1960s, the rural-to-urban ratio had been almost completely reversed from 1856. Around two-thirds of the state's population lived in the Adelaide urban area, yet the rural overweighting effectively resulted in a rural vote being worth at least double a vote in Adelaide.

Neu Elsass began when twenty-two families homesteaded near Strasbourg. The original area of Neu Elsass Colony was the region around the central and southern portion of Last Mountain Lake and included Strasbourg, Duval, Bulyea, Earl Grey, Gibbs, Silton, Dilke, Holdfast, Penzance, and Liberty. The area of German settlement expanded into surrounding areas, including Cymric and in effect, doubling the area of the colony. The Canadian Pacific Railway erected a portable train station along the rail line in 1911 which was replaced in 1924 by an imported standard number five station which was removed in 1943.

It displays several distinct longitudinal grooves and ridges on the surface, indicating possible mesenteries. However, its phylogenetic affinity is still in question; it has even been alleged to be related to members of the Ediacara biota. The fossils, found in Yunnan province, China, were initially described as three distinct species, Xianguangia sinica, Chengjian-gopenna wangii, and Galeaplumosus abilus, and then assembled into one proposed species, X. sinica. The animal was polyp-like, its gastric cavity divided by septa; it had a second body cavity in its holdfast, and densely-plumed feather-like tentacles, implying that it was a suspension feeder.

Niebla josecuervoi is distinguished by the thallus divided into linear-prismaticLinear—having parallel sides for 10 times or more the width. Prismatic—shaped like a prism in cross section branches initially developing from a common attachment base (or holdfast); the outer basal branches generally creeping or ascending near the ground for some distance, central branches ascending to erect, all dividing irregularly and frequently above, bearing many short spine-like branchlets along the upper side, collectively appearing comb-like; the whole thallus to 22 cm in diameter. The species (N. josecuervoi) also recognized by containing salazinic acid, without triterpenes.

The Joggins Mine continued to produce coal throughout the First World War and even amid the great scientific interest surrounding the Joggins Formation. Production at the Joggins Mine peaked in 1916 when the mine generated 201,000 tons of coal over the course of the year. The amount of workers in Joggins steadily increased with production, but as Nova Scotia deindustrialised and other mines shut down the percentage of Cumberland County miners employed at Joggins increased from 21% in the 1880s to 25% in the 1900s and 43% in the 1910s. The Provincial Workmen's Association (PWA) established an early foothold in Joggins, first with Brunswick Lodge and later with Holdfast Lodge.

Suzy McKee Charnas (born 22 October 1939) is an American novelist and short story writer, writing primarily in the genres of science fiction and fantasy. She has won several awards for her fiction, including the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award and the James Tiptree Jr. Award. A selection of her short fiction was collected in Stagestruck Vampires and Other Phantasms in 2004. The Holdfast Chronicles, a four-volume story written over the course of almost thirty years (the first installment, Walk to the End of the World was published in 1974, and the last installment, The Conqueror's Child was published in 1999) is considered to be her major accomplishment in writing.

The large macro-alga Durvillaea antarctica supports a diverse array of invertebrate taxa and may play an important role in transporting some of this fauna to Heard Island. The rocky shores of Heard Island exhibit a clear demarcation between fauna of the lower kelp holdfast zone and the upper shore zone community, probably due to effects of desiccation, predation and freezing in the higher areas. The limpet Nacella kerguelensis is abundant in the lower part of the shore, being found on rock surfaces and on kelp holdfasts. Other common but less abundant species in this habitat include the chiton Hemiarthrum setulosum and the starfish Anasterias mawsoni.

The Year of the Veteran commemorates the 60th Anniversary of the end of the World War II. The Royal Canadian Legion, Saskatchewan Command and Saskatchewan Remembers Committee came together to select this particular highway of Saskatchewan because of the history of a military presence along the route. Royal Canadian Legion branches are located at Moose Jaw, Penance - Holdfast, Young - Zelma, Watrous, Simpson, and Prince Albert. A military history museum is located at the Watrous, as well military memorabilia is held at Prince Albert Royal Canadian Legion branch. Moose Jaw Royal Canadian Air Force RCAF and 15 Wing military base is located south- southwest of Moose Jaw.

The theca of cinctans was surrounded on its margins by a frame of large stereom plates called a cinctus, and the dorsal and ventral surfaces were covered in a tessellated arrangement of small plates. The stele was essentially an extension of the cinctus, rather than a discrete appendage, and would have been fairly stiff side-to-side but possibly more flexible up and down. The stele was not a holdfast, but may have served to stabilize the animal. In most cinctans, the overall shape of the theca was only mildly asymmetrical, but in the unusual genus Lignanicystis the theca was highly asymmetrical, convergent on the stylophorans in some respects.

He and his large family emigrated on the Navarino, falsifying their ages and occupations in order to qualify for free passage. They arriving at Holdfast Bay on 6 December 1837. He selected "town acre" number 57 on Hindley Street and Section 50, Hundred of Adelaide, an property at Hilton, South Australia, a few miles from Adelaide, adjacent to one of Dr. Everard's selections. Immediately on arrival in South Australia he sent his son Allan to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) to bring back a team of working buffalo, implements and seed wheat, which they planted and reaped by hand in 1838, arguably the first such crop in the colony.

Stephens, Samuel (1808-1840), Australian Dictionary of Biography online retrieved 1 July 2011 He was a clerk and assistant cashier in the Hull Banking Company from 1833 until 1836, when he was appointed cashier and accountant of the South Australian Company. He sailed for South Australia in the Coromandel and on 17 January 1837 arrived at Holdfast Bay where he set up business in a tent. He bought eight acres in the new city of Adelaide. In 1840 when the company's business was divided, Stephens became the Adelaide manager of the South Australian Banking Company, whose local board consisted of George Morphett, R. F. Newland and E. I. S. Trimmer.

Built near the former Luna Park site was Magic Mountain, which first opened in 1982. It featured water slides, mini-golf, bumper boats, dodgem cars and many other amusements and was popular with many Adelaide residents. It was also extensively criticised, called an eyesore and likened to a "giant dog dropping" in the media; despite this it was very popular with young children and teenagers. As part of the Holdfast Shores development, Magic Mountain was finally demolished in 2004 and replaced with The Beachouse, a 5-storey modern centre with a more conservative design which still incorporates the historic carousel; it opened in mid-2006.

Charles Kingston, the division's namesake The division was named after Charles Kingston, Premier of South Australia (1893–1899), elected to the first House of Representatives in 1901 and the first Federal member of the Division of Adelaide in 1903. Kingston was first based on the Holdfast Bay area to the north of the current boundaries from the 1949 election as a notionally marginal to fairly safe Labor seat. However, it fell to the Liberals in that election, only to have Labor win it at the 1951 election. This started a tradition of Labor and the Liberals alternating for long spells in a seat that has slowly moved south over the decades.

The electric tram network in the late 1950s In 1927, ownership and operation transferred from the SAR to the Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT). Steam trains ceased on 2 April 1929 and the line was closed to be rebuilt as a double track standard gauge, electrified at 600 V dc and converted to tramway operation. The Goodwood Overpass was constructed at this time, separating the new tram tracks from the conventional railway. The line was reopened on 14 December 1929 with the city terminus reverting to Victoria Square. The Holdfast Bay line closed on 15 December 1929 for conversion but this was not undertaken due to the onset of the Great Depression.

Laminaria expresses a haplo-diplophasic life history, in which it alternates from a macroscopic thallic sporophyte structure, consisting of the holdfast, a stipe, and the blades, to a filamentous, microscopic gametophyte. The sporophyte structure of laminaria can grow to , which is large in comparison to other algae, but still smaller than the giant kelps such as Macrocystis and Nereocystis, which can grow up to . On the other hand, the gametophyte structure is no more than a few millimeters in length. In opposition to the gametophyte phase, which only consists of one type of tissue, the more complex sporophyte phase is made up of different types of tissue.

Organisms from the lower Cambrian, such as Thaumaptilon, were once thought to be Ediacarans, but this hypothesis no longer has many adherents. One possible Ediacaran survivor whose status is still open to scrutiny is Ediacaria booleyi, a purported holdfast structure known from the upper Cambrian. If this does turn out to be a true Ediacaran, the biota cannot have disappeared completely. Disbelievers have claimed that the fossils don't actually have a biological origin, which doesn't seem to be the case—evidence is mounting to suggest that it is an organism (or at least of biological origin, perhaps a microbial colony),See Ediacaria just not one that is related to the Ediacara biota.

The appearance of the plant fossil is a holdfast on the bottom, with a stem-like stipe between there and the fronds which are about to . In life, the fronds would have hung vertically whenever the plant was submerged during high tide, and would have flopped over the stipe when the plant was exposed during low tide in a habitus similar to that of the living sea palm. Other specimens from this deposit collected and described by Massalongo in 1855 were actually trace fossils, and they remain assigned to Zoophycos; only the specimens of Z. caput-medusae have been assigned to Postelsiopsis, as those are fossils of the original plant, and not trace fossils.

These projections are called haptera and similar structures of the same name are found on lichens. The holdfasts of organisms that live in sandy substrates are bulb-like and very flexible, such as those of sea pens, thus permitting the organism to pull the entire body into the substrate when the holdfast is contracted. The holdfasts of organisms that live on smooth surfaces (such as the surface of a boulder) have flattened bases which adhere to the surface. The organism derives no nutrition from this intimate contact with the substrate, as the process of liberating nutrients from the substrate requires enzymatically eroding the substrate away, thereby increasing the risk of organism falling off the substrate.

He was one of 14 of 39 independent MPs elected to the House at that election, which as a grouping won 40 percent of the primary vote, more than either of the major parties. He clashed vocally with prominent rural independent Tom Stott in the aftermath, having fallen out over Fisk's failed candidacy for chairman of committees. Atlantic Tower During Development, circa mid-1970s Atlantic Tower was built in the late 1970s and was Adelaide's tallest residential building at the time. The fourteen-story tower featured a revolving restaurant on its top floor, and was part of a larger development plan that never eventuated. Many other high-rise buildings exist in Glenelg, including the fifteen-story Stamford Grand hotel on Moseley Square, built in 1990, and the twelve-story Liberty Towers, built in 2004. The Holdfast Shores development, starting in the late 1990s, included the construction of the Marina Pier apartment building with its own private marina in Glenelg North, and the Pier Hotel, founded 2001, and unrelated to the historic Pier Hotel on Moseley Square.

Niebla arenaria is recognized by a hemispherical thallus similar to the reindeer lichen Cladonia rangiferina, loosely attached to soil without a holdfast, intricately divided into narrow tubular prismatic branches shortly bifurcate near branch tips, the tips usually with black dot-like pycnidia, and by containing the lichen substance salazinic acid. It sometime forms pure colonies along sandy shores of bays and peninsulas, possibly as a result of the black-tipped branchlets breaking off and reproducing. Similar species are Niebla brachyura, distinguished by containing the lichen substance hypoprotocetraric acid, Niebla pulchribarbara, distinguished by containing protocetraric acid, and Niebla limicola, that differs by the broad flattened curled (crispate) branches near base from which short bifurcate acicular branchlets develop.

One of the main features is a 600-metre Wellingtonia tree avenue, which was shown off to good effect in the 1969 movie Mosquito Squadron, where the manor house played the part of a French château used as a prisoner of war camp and factory for the V-1 flying bomb. The manor was also used as a location in the 2007 Victorian fantasy movie Stardust, starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. In 2013, as part of the RSME-PPP project, the Holdfast consortium built a new officers' mess on the Gibraltar Barracks site. The Ministry of Defence part- funded this project from sale of the manor which was sold to an international investor in November 2014.

Rankine (often spelled Rankin) was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, a son of James Rankine and his wife Jane Rankine, née Paterson. He may have visited Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) as ship's doctor on the Sir William Bentinck in August 1838. John and his wife Mary Miller Rankine, née Watson, together with his brother William Rankine and his wife Jane Rankine, née Rankine, and their seven children emigrated to South Australia on the Fairfield, arriving at Holdfast Bay in April 1839. They purchased a 50-acre "Special Survey" section of the Hundred of Angas, founding the town of Strathalbyn. John's 17 or 18 year-old nephew John Paterson and nieces Jane Gemmell Paterson and Elizabeth Paterson, aged 19 and 15, were also on the Fairfield.

The first settlers arrived on Kangaroo Island in July 1836, with all of the ships later sailing north soon afterwards to anchor in Holdfast Bay on the advice of Surveyor-General, Colonel William Light. The foundation of South Australia is usually considered to be the Proclamation of the new Province by Governor Hindmarsh at Glenelg on 28 December 1836. However, after the government under the Colonisation Commission set up by the 1834 Act failed to achieve financial self- sufficiency, the South Australia Act 1842 was passed in July 1842, repealing the earlier Act, making South Australia a Crown colony, providing for the formation of an appointed Legislative Assembly and passing greater powers to the Governor of South Australia (then Sir George Grey).

The LCL's grip on power began to slip in the 1950s; they would lose seats in every election from 1953 onward. Even at the height of Playford's popularity, the LCL was almost nonexistent in Adelaide, winning almost no seats in the capital outside the wealthy "eastern crescent" and the area around Glenelg and Holdfast Bay. Due to its paper-thin base in the capital, Playford's LCL often won just barely enough seats to govern alone; the party never held more than 23 seats at any time during Playford's tenure. Despite this, the LCL party machine had become moribund as leaders had become lulled into a false sense of security due to the extended run of election wins aided by the Playmander.

Murray was born at Langshall Burn, in the parish of Eskdalemuir, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. After spending six years acclimatizing Cheviot sheep to the highlands of Inverness and Ross-shire he emigrated as a full fare-paying passenger in the Lady Lillford to South Australia, arriving at Holdfast Bay on 27 September 1839. He was contracted by Sir James Malcolm, a distant relative, to assist his eldest son William Oliver Malcolm (died 19 August 1865) in the care of sheep on his Barossa property, where he worked for fifteen months with considerable success, got them into such fine order that they took a prize at the first pastoral show in South Australia. This exhibition was held at the Horseshoe (Noarlunga), under the auspices of the South Australian Company.

Niebla siphonoloba is distinguished by a thallus divided into relatively few—less than 20–branches from a pale rusty orange pigmented holdfast, the branches generally cylindrical, stubby, oblong to linear in outline,Oblong, linear: branches with parallel margins. Oblong: branch length less than 10 times width. Linear: branch length 10 or more times width to 5 cm long and 1.5–3(-5) mm wide, most simple, some branched above the middle, more frequently branched near apex in thalli on Santa Cruz Island, short wavy (sinuous) along marginal and intermarginal cortical ridges, occasionally with short rounded lobes, especially near apex, and by containing sekikaic acid, with triterepenes. The cortex is relatively thin, 35–75 (-100) µm thick, with the cortical ridges much like a honeycomb.

Morphett is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. The electorate is located approximately slightly south of west of the Adelaide city centre, bounded by the Holdfast Bay coastline to the west and Morphett Road to the east. It is approximately in area, and includes the suburbs of Camden Park, Glenelg, Glenelg East, Glenelg South, Glengowrie, Morphettville, Novar Gardens, Park Holme and Plympton Park, as well as parts of Plympton and Somerton Park. Created in 1976 following the electoral redistribution which took effect from the 1977 election, the electoral district was named after Sir John Morphett (1809–1892) who lived in the Morphettville area and was speaker of the enlarged Legislative Council in 1851, and president of the elected Legislative Council from 1865 to 1873.

Sir Thomas Meautys (1592–1649) with a long lovelock. William Prynne, a puritan pamphleteer, wrote Health's Sickness. The Unloveliness of Lovelocks (1628), in which he states that for men to wear their hair long was "unseemly and unlawful unto Christians", while it was "mannish, unnatural, impudent, and unchristian" for women to cut it short. He related the story of a nobleman who was dangerously ill, and who, on his recovery, "declared publicly his detestation of his effeminate, fantastic lovelock, which he then sensibly perceived to be but a cord of vanity, by which he had given the Devil holdfast to lead him at his pleasure, and who would never resign his prey as long as he nourished this unlovely bush", and so he ordered the barber to cut it off.

The federal Liberal Party also campaigned hard for the PWA, as Cumberland had long been a Conservative Party stronghold: Cumberland had only ever been represented by Conservative Members of Parliament since Confederation and in nine elections had supported Charles Tupper, who was leading the Conservatives in 1896. Support from Holdfast Lodge managed to turn Cumberland in favour of the Liberals, and Hance James Logan was elected to the Parliament on 23 June 1896. The PWA succeeded in part because of their support for the community's funerary traditions, shutting down facilities like the Joggins Mine following a death and not returning to work until the deceased worker was put to rest. Such elaborate traditions had once been commonplace, but were mostly abandoned by the turn of the century until revived with the protection offered by unions.

Light eventually chose the site of Adelaide, and stationed the Cygnet at Port Lincoln to notify Hindmarsh that the capital would be located on the east Coast of Gulf St Vincent near Holdfast Bay, now known as Glenelg, South Australia (named after Lord Glenelg, the then Colonial Secretary). (Through Lord Glenelg the name derives from Glenelg, Highland (previously Inverness-shire), Scotland.) The first, earliest products published in the Star Fleet Universe presented material pertaining to the races and empires of the Alpha Octant during the period of the Middle years (approximately the era in which the original USS Enterprise of the United Federation of Planets undertook its first five-year mission). The first product, the Pocket Edition, presented the Federation, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Empire, the Kzinti Hegemony, the Gorn Confederation, the Orion Pirates, and the Tholian Holdfast. Excluding these last two, the various powers were loosely aligned (except during the alliances solidified during the General War) into two opposing camps headed by the two superpowers, the Federation and the Klingons. The Romulans were Klingon allies, and the Kzintis and Gorns were Federation allies (the Gorns being particular Romulan opponents because they share a common border).

William Boothby, the division's namesake Before 1949 and the creation of the Division of Sturt, Boothby covered most of the southern and eastern suburbs of Adelaide. For much of the first half-century after Federation, it was one of only three seats based on the capital, the others being Adelaide and Hindmarsh. The mostly rural seat of Barker was then considered a "hybrid urban-rural" seat, stretching all the way from the southern tip of South Australia at least as far as Glenelg and the Holdfast Bay area, and at times even stretched as far as the western metropolitan suburbs of Keswick and Henley Beach. For most of the first half-century after Federation, Boothby was a marginal seat that changed hands several times between the Liberal Party of Australia (and its predecessors) and the Australian Labor Party.

As the pipe could not be bent to a radius less than five feet, a new haul-off drum of ten foot diameter and fleeting ring, together with roller type bow and stern gear, were produced. The final equipment was fitted to . Full-scale production of the two-inch pipe was started on 14 August 1942, using steel from the now near-defunct Corby steel works, and six weeks later, on 30 October, a length was loaded on board HMS Holdfast under the command of Commander Treby-Heale OBE, RNR, which was to be used as a full-scale rehearsal of Operation PLUTO. This trial occurred between 26 December and 30 December 1942, the 30 mile length being laid across the Bristol Channel, in rough weather, and the shore ends being connected at Swansea and Ilfracombe.

The Mid-Cambrian Dinomischus was once hailed as the earliest fossil entoproct, but the classification is uncertain Since entoprocts are small and soft-bodied, fossils have been extremely rare. In 1977, Simon Conway Morris provided the first description of Dinomischus, a sessile animal with calyx, stalk and holdfast, found in Canada's Burgess Shale, which was formed about . Morris regarded this animal as the earliest known entoproct, since its mouth and anus lay inside a ring of structures above the calyx, but noted that these structures were flat and rather stiff, while the tentacles of modern entoprocts are flexible and have a round cross-section. In 1992 J.A. Todd and P.D. Taylor concluded that Dinomischus was not an entoproct, because it did not have the typical rounded, flexible tentacles, and the fossils showed no other features that clearly resembled those of entoprocts.

Hiemalora is a fossil of the Ediacaran biota, reaching around 3 cm in diameter, which superficially resembles a sea anemone. The genus has a sack- like body with faint radiating lines originally interpreted as tentacles, but discovery of a frond-like structure seemingly attached to some Heimalora has added weight to a competing interpretation: that it represents the holdfast of a larger organism. This interpretation would stand against its original classification in the medusoid Cnidaria; it would also consign a once-popular hypothesis placing Hiemalora in the chondrophores, on the basis of its tentacle structure, to the dustbin. Studies testing the feasibility of hypothesis investigated the possibilities that such fragile tentacles could be preserved, and concluded that it would be very improbable — especially as many Hiemalora bearing beds also contain such fossils as Cyclomedusa, but do not preserve the tentacles on these organisms.

Savill bought The Assyrian, which went on to win the 1882 Melbourne Cup. He subsequently joined the Adelaide Gun Club, which in the days before clay pigeons used live birds as targets. He had a hobby farm at Morphettville close to the racecourse and the Holdfast Bay railway line (now a tramline), and there built a pigeon tower with boxes for 700 birds, which became a well-known local landmark, and deliberately made larger and taller than that of "Ben" Rounsevell nearby. ;John Born in Scotland, he emigrated to South Australia with his parents and was educated at Gawler, where he encountered Dick Holland, with whom, at age 13 or 14, he made his first overland droving trip from Sydney to Adelaide with horses, and made his next trip with John McKinlay, who shortly afterwards took over Lake Victoria Station.

When Anglo-European settlers first arrived in 1836 at Holdfast Bay (now Glenelg), the land was considered in the South Australia Act 1834 passed by the British Parliament and by Governor Hindmarsh as Commander in chief in his Proclamation of 1836, to be a barren wasteland. In contrast to the rest of Australia, terra nullius did not apply to the new province. The Letters Patent establishing the Province of South Australia attached to the Act acknowledged prior Aboriginal ownership, and stated that no actions could be undertaken that would "affect the rights of any Aboriginal natives of the said province to the actual occupation and enjoyment in their own persons or in the persons of their descendants of any land therein now actually occupied or enjoyed by such natives". Nonetheless, under the Act, the Indigenous inhabitants were assumed to have become British subjects.

Niebla tesselata is distinguished by the thallus divided into tubular branches from a pale rusty orange pigmented holdfast, the branches generally narrowly conical, simple, densely covered by black dot-like pycnidiaPycnidium (pycnidia plural) is a small flash-shaped structure (200–350 µm long) that produces conidia, which escape through an opening (ostiole) at the top and function in reproduction, asexually or sexually, appearing dot- like from surface viewBungartz, F. 2002. Morphology and anatomy of conidia- producing structures, Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert 1: 35–40 positioned centrally on areolae, and by containing sekikaic acid, with triterepenes. The species (N. tesselata) is unique in the genus for its simple branches and for the central development of pycnidia on the raised areolate surface, as opposed to developing along the cortical ridges as generally recognized for the genus Niebla.

Niebla undulata is distinguished by a bluish green thallus to 6 cm high and 6 cm broad, divided into curly ribbon- like branches from a short tubular base, and by the presence of the lichen metabolite divaricatic acid, with triterpenes. The primary branches, which are less than 20 in number, are loosely connected at base to a yellowish pigmented holdfast, blackened slightly above base, curved upwards or widely spread apart, sometimes horizontally to the extent that they creep along the rock, and they are undulate both broadly and shortly along margins. The undulate margins appear related to the development of black dot-like pyncidia or by the development of apothecia (ascocarp). The cortex is relatively thin, 35–75(-100) µm thick, with prominent raised vein-like ridges, the longitudinal ridges not defining the branch margins, interconnected by diagonal ridges that fork and join other diagonal ridges, all forming a reticulate net.

James and John Chambers were early settlers in South Australia who left England in 1836, became wealthy pastoralists and were closely connected with John McDouall Stuart's expeditions across the continent of Australia. James and John, sons of William and Elizabeth (née Wilson) Chambers, their wives Catherine and Mary (who were sisters) and their young families were among the first colonists, James arriving on the Coromandel at Holdfast Bay on 17 January 1837. The plan had been that by leaving on an earlier ship James would arrive in plenty of time to organise accommodation for the rest of the family, but unfavourable winds forced the Coromandel to delay its departure until 9 September. The ship was further delayed at Cape Town, partly because insufficient and inferior food supplies had brought about so much illness that Captain William Chesser (died 14 February 1840) feared many passengers would die on the voyage.

Originally known by the Kaurna name of "Warekila" meaning 'place of changing winds', Happy Valley, a source suggested, was given its name by Edward Burgess, one of the first settlers in the area. Burgess, a staunch Methodist, arrived at Holdfast Bay on 20 January 1837. At some time during the next two years, Burgess made his home at Happy Valley and began farming. He was not alone: the South Australian Company had also purchased significant amounts of land in the area and was offering it to the settlers. By 1866, Happy Valley was described as ‘an agricultural settlement lying near Dashwood’s Gully, a good district road connecting the two places. It lies near the postal village of O’Halloran Hill. There is a public pound and a Forester’s court in this place.’ By this time, too, wheat farming had been joined by wine grape growing.

It was established on 7 July 1853 as the District Council of West Torrens, which was one of the first local governments to be formed in South Australia following the passage of the District Councils Act 1852. It became smaller over time as a number of areas within the original boundaries split off to form new municipalities: the Holdfast Bay area became part of the new Corporate Town of Glenelg on 23 August 1855, the Thebarton area seceded as the Corporate Town of Thebarton on 8 February 1883, and the West Beach area seceded as part of the Corporate Town of Henley and Grange on 4 December 1915. It gained an area from the District Council of Marion on 15 January 1903, but subsequently lost the same area to the Glenelg council. Further areas of West Torrens were severed and added to Glenelg in 1928, 1932 and 1950.

However, Dendybar the Mottled — an ambitious wizard from the Hosttower of the Arcane — has heard of the Crystal Shard and believes that Drizzt still possesses it, and plots to take it for his own ends. He forges an uneasy alliance with Entreri so that both may achieve their goals, and sends his apprentice Sydney with Entreri, along with his golem (Bok) and a soldier named Jierdan. The companions travel across the Northlands towards Silverymoon, encountering barbarian tribes, an eccentric wizard family (the Harpells) and the soldiers of Nesme, who react to Drizzt with hostility, forcing the companions to divert across the Evermoors, also known as the Trollmoors, an ordeal that almost makes an end of them. Upon reaching Silverymoon, Drizzt is again shunned, but the companions are directed by Lady Alustriel to the Herald's Holdfast, where they obtain the final clues to the location of Mithril Hall.

HAIS pipeline consisted of an inner lead tube surrounded by layers of bitumen impregnated paper, cotton and jute yarn and protected by layers of steel tape and galvanised steel wires. The design of HAIS was refined as a result of a series of tests, the main changes being to increase the layers of steel tape armouring from two to four and to manufacture the inner lead pipe using extrusion thereby avoiding a longitudinal seam. In March 1943, in a full-scale feasibility test, HMS Holdfast laid a pipeline between Swansea and Ilfracombe, a distance of about ; the pipe supplied North Devon and Cornwall with petrol for over a year. The feasibility test used a pipe with an internal diameter of , the same as the original power cable had had, the specification was increased to to allow three times as much petrol to be pumped through.

With boatfuls of immigrants set to arrive and impatient settlers already camping at Holdfast Bay, Rapid Bay and Kangaroo Island, Light was under immense pressure to identify a location with a suitable harbour, sufficient agricultural land and fresh water. After assessing a number of other potential locations, Light was ordered by England to consider Port Lincoln as a possible site for the capital. While Thomas Lipson had arrived in Port Lincoln earlier and approved of its 'beautiful harbour' and 'fertile land', Light was unconvinced from the beginning as he faced fierce westerly gales, ill-placed islands and rocky reefs on arrival. Light decided it might be dangerous for merchant ships trying to enter the unfamiliar territory after a long voyage and that there was not enough of what he thought was good agricultural land, and not enough fresh water to sustain a city so he decided to choose Adelaide as the most suitable place for settlement.

He joined the firm of Forbes, McNeill, & Co.,Principals were Sir John Forbes and Sir John McNeill, brother of Duncan McNeill, 1st Baron Colonsay of London, and was appointed to act as their agent in Australia, choosing to make South Australia his home, on account of the freedom of religion practised in that State. He emigrated to South Australia on the William Nichol, captained by William Elder (1813–1882, brother of Alexander Lang Elder), with his family, servants, household goods, and a large quantity of merchandise. They arrived at Holdfast Bay on 7 July 1840, and for a time lived in a "portable cottage" before renting the fine house on Hurtle Square, Adelaide, owned by George Milner Stephen and previously occupied by E. C. Frome. This was in the time of Governor Gawler's lavish expenditure on public buildings and other infrastructure, and the city was for a time quite prosperous and Sutherland's merchandise sold at a good profit, mostly on credit, much of which he could never recover.

Niebla disrupta is generally recognized by the thallus divided into many narrow subterete branches, to 7 cm high, arising from a well-defined holdfast, blackened around the base to a short distance above, often with long terminal vine-like branchlets; the branchlets often with undeveloped apothecia, the more mature apothecia commonly seen below—in the mid to lower part of the thallus. The thallus branches are similar to those of the related Niebla homalea in their linear shape and in the margins twisting 90° at frequent intervals, and by transverse cracks occurring at frequent but irregular intervals, and in the texture of the cortex, which is slightly thinner in N. disrupta, 75–110 µm thick, compared to 75–150 µm thick in N. homalea. Black dot-like pycnidia are common along branch margins—at least to the mid region, and often to near base, and mostly absent between margins. Niebla disrupta is further distinguished by the lichen substance sekikaic acid, with accessory triterpenes, in contrast to divaricatic acid in N. homalea.

Niebla rugosa is distinguished by a thallus divided into relatively few—less than 20–branches from a yellow pigmented holdfast, the branches generally strap- shaped, oblong to linear in outline,Oblong & linear: branches with parallel margins. Oblong: branch length less than 10 times width. Linear: branch length 10 or more times width to 4 cm long and 3–7 mm wide, mostly simple, wavy along acute margins and cortical ridges, occasionally with short rounded lobes, especially near apex, with longitudinal spiraling ridges that divide and unite generally at 45° to form angled margins and intermittent ridges, the longitudinal ridges connected by transverse ridges, similar to a spiraled ladder (or DNA helix), and by containing divaricatic acid, with triterepenes. Similar species are Niebla siphonoloba, distinguished by the lichen substance sekikaic acid and by transverse ridges branching between margins, Niebla podetiaforma, distinguished by reticulated vein-like cortical ridges between margins, Niebla contorta distinguished by the obtuse branch margins, and Niebla undulata that differs by having a smooth recessed cortical surface between ridges.

Niebla turgida is distinguished by a yellow green bushy thallus to 6 cm high and 15 cm across, divided into tubular swollen branches; the primary branches, which are often round in cross section near base, are loosely connected to a yellowish pigmented holdfast, blackened slightly above base, curve upwards or spread widely and become entangled, mostly narrow in length and prismatic to partially flattened above in cross section, variously fringed along the branch margins, often long tapered to the tip. The cortex is relatively thin, 35–50 µm thick, with prominent network of raised vein-like ridges on the surface, the longitudinal ridges generally not defining the branch margins, interconnected by diagonal ridges that fork and connect to other ridges; black dot-like pycnidia conspicuous along the cortical ridges; apothecia often in small clusters on lobes of terminal short spur-like branches; the key lichen substance is divaricatic acid, with triterpenes. Similar species are Niebla podetiaforma, distinguished by the smaller thallus with less prominent cortical ridges, and Niebla juncosa that differs by longitudinal cortical ridges that define the branch margins.
