An editorial published in the May 26, 1972 issue under the heading "Our Rap" gives the paper's statement of purpose: The two titles Grok and Fair Witness are both references to the novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein, a popular touchstone of the 1960s hippie counterculture. To "grok" is a form of deep holistic comprehension of any thing or situation (similar to hippie/beatnik slang "dig"); while a "Fair Witness" is a (fictional) service provided by a sort of hired court reporter with an eidetic memory who serves as a totally honest bonded eyewitness at any proceeding. Contents of the Fair Witness were the usual 1960s underground press mix of underground comix (some originating locally in the Fair Witness; others like Crumb, Bode, etc.

Grok Magazine is an Australian free student magazine. The magazine is written and produced by Curtin University students and published by the Curtin Student Guild. The magazine was started in about 1970 and named after a word indicating deep understanding that was introduced in Robert Heinlein's novel Stranger in a Strange Land. 2009 would see 5 issues published, and approximately 10,000 copies distributed per issue.

Chameides has been active in highlighting the dangers of global warming, and has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Science, Space and Technology on the matter. In his testimony, delivered on April 25, 2013, he said that global warming is occurring, is primarily caused by human activity, and that it will have many negative effects on the United States, including, but not limited to, "more intense and frequent heat waves, risks to coastal communities from sea level rise, greater drying of the arid Southwest, and increased public health risks." He currently runs a blog on the Nicholas School of the Environment website called "The Green Grok,"The Green Grok and has also blogged about global warming and other environmental issues on the Huffington Post and for Popular Science. Chameides has also written about the economics of climate change mitigation for both Science and for The Guardian.

Even though the band did not win the festival, it got positive reactions from the audience and critics. In December 1980, the band appeared at the Grok Festival, held at the Novi Sad fair. They also played as an opening act for Haustor, Prljavo Kazalište and Idoli. With the help of the producer Aleksandar "Aca" Pražić, the band recorded a few songs, which provided the media presentation of the band.

Having been inspired by his father Bill's early '70s acid rock band Grok and previous group The Verdicts, Joy began playing music as a teenager. In 1986 he co-founded Moss Icon which is known as an early influence on the hardcore punk rock splinter genre known as "emotive hardcore" or emo. Moss Icon were active until 1991, briefly in 2001, and occasionally since 2007. In 1990 Joy played guitar in Breathing Walker, a band containing members of Moss Icon as well as other musicians.

Fitzgerald also brought some of her own costumes for the character as well. Both Grok and Mercury were pre-rendered 3D characters by Hatch and Walker, while Skullcrusher and The Guardian were made by Chris Salmon as 14-inch models that would later be filmed through the process of stop motion animation. Afterwards, both Huntsman and Dale Meier edited and cleaned the films in order to provide the necessary frames to animate the characters within the game. Bruce Johnson applied finishing touches to some scenes.

In 1981, the band had their first notable performance at the Subotica Festival Omladina, which was followed by a series of successful appearances in Zagreb, Belgrade and Novi Sad. The popularity of the band was increased by the band's two-song recording which was broadcast by the major Yugoslav radio stations, and the opportunity to have television appearances. On the 1982 New Year's Eve, the band performed at the Grok festival in Novi Sad, along with Bulevar, Paraf and Buldogi. After the performance, Bakoš temporarily left the band being firstly replaced by Gradski Magazin member Dragan Kašiković, and then Miroslav Papić.

He was later present at the Apogee Space Station when the Zoni abducted Clank. Two years later, Qwark returned to being a "hero" after a stint in acting and joined Ratchet to search for Clank. Qwark proved to be of some use during their traversal of Planet Quantos; after later being captured by Lord Vorselon and rescued by Ratchet, Qwark helped the Fongoid residents of Quantos to escape. He later travelled to the Agorian Battleplex where he ended up fighting in the area; after being saved again by Ratchet, Qwark adopted the Agorian's war grok and named it Snowball.

As a result of the development of Zope 3 / BlueBream, there are now many independent Python packages used and developed as a part of BlueBream, and although many of these are usable outside of BlueBream, many are not. The Zope Toolkit (ZTK) project was started to clarify which packages were usable outside BlueBream, and to improve the re-usability of the packages. Thus the Zope Toolkit is a base for the Zope frameworks. Zope 2.12 is the first release of a web framework that builds on Zope Toolkit, and Grok and BlueBream were set to have releases based on the ZTK during 2010.

The 1978 recording lineup, listed on the Grok re-release of "Aliens in Our Midst" backed with "One Thousand Reasons", consisted of Keith McKee (drums), Donnie Jupiter (lead vocals & rhythm guitar), and Tom Darling (lead guitar & bass). Dave Houston was credited as producer (with the Twinkeyz), and for synthesizer and special effects (with Jupiter).

Groklaw was a website that covered legal news of interest to the free and open source software community. Started as a law blog on May 16, 2003 by paralegal Pamela Jones ("PJ"), it covered issues such as the SCO-Linux lawsuits, the EU antitrust case against Microsoft, and the standardization of Office Open XML. Jones described Groklaw as ..."a place where lawyers and geeks could explain things to each other and work together, so they'd understand each other's work better." Harald Welte and Groklaw announced as winners of the FSF's annual free software awards Its name derives from "grok", roughly meaning "to understand completely", which had previously entered geek slang.

Based on a suggestion by Belgian amateur astronomer Jean Meeus, this minor planet was named after Robert Anson Heinlein (1907–1988), the Dean of Science Fiction, author of the mainstream literary classic Stranger in a Strange Land, and Science Fiction novels Starship Troopers and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 13 April 2006 (). Heinlein helped narrate The Moon Landing with Walter Cronkite on CBS in 1969, was involved in the planning of the Star Wars Defense program in the 1980s, contributed the words Waldo and Grok to the English language, and popularized the phrases Space Marine, TANSTAAFL, and Pay it Forward.

He then used his high-school drama skills to go undercover as "Nurse Shannon" on the Nefarious Space Station. Despite being captured when helping Ratchet and Clank to destroy Nefarious' fleet, Qwark escaped and with the company of his wark grok Snowball, held Nefarious' troops off so that Ratchet could reach Nefarious. In the Ratchet & Clank comic book series, Qwark had become Galactic President of Polaris at some point, leading to retribution against him by former presidential candidate Artemis Zogg. Qwark was able to provide information on Zogg's Helios Project but played very little part in any actual heroics, instead preferring to call on Ratchet and Clank again after they were rescued from prison.

Eventually, Smith starts a Martian-influenced "Church of All Worlds", combining elements of the Fosterite cult (especially the sexual aspects) with Western esotericism, whose members learn the Martian language and thus acquire the ability to truly "grok" the nature of reality, granting them psychokinesis. The church is eventually besieged by Fosterites for practicing "blasphemy", and the church building is destroyed, but unknown to the public, Smith's followers teleport to safety. Smith is arrested by the police, but escapes and returns to his followers, later explaining to Jubal that his gigantic fortune has been bequeathed to the Church. With that wealth and their new abilities, Church members will be able to reorganize human societies and cultures.

While Augie March generally fall into an indie/pop rock genre, their ability to mix other genres into their style at times makes classifying their musical style difficult. A common thread that runs through the band's sound is Richards' literate and often verbose lyrics, which have set the band apart from much of the rest of the Australian music scene. Even early on in their career, Richards' unique style attracted attention and he has drawn critical acclaim for his poetic style, with one reviewer describing him as "unique", "refreshing", and "intellectual". Allmusic's Jack Rabid said Richards "exhibits a honey voice" on Sunset Studies, but Grok pointed out that the album was rendered too complex or intricate for many.

The roots of the band were planted in 2003 when Ryan Lenssen and Adrian Jewett formed Thee Oneironauts (O-nye-rawn-nauts). The pair recorded and self-released an EP entitled Night of the Lawnchairs on the GROK Studios imprint, which had also released Lenssen's concept band "Rushing To Redlights". The Oneironauts grew to trio status with the addition of Nick Greaves on guitar before ultimately becoming The Most Serene Republic. Their debut album Underwater Cinematographer was produced, mixed and engineered by Lenssen and mastered by Ryan A. Mills and recorded at ASF Studios. Its original release was in late 2004 on the independent label Sunday League Records before being picked up by Arts & Crafts. It was re-released on June 28, 2005 featuring new artwork.

Robert A. Heinlein originally coined the term grok in his 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land as a Martian word that could not be defined in Earthling terms, but can be associated with various literal meanings such as "water", "to drink", "life", or "to live", and had a much more profound figurative meaning that is hard for terrestrial culture to understand because of its assumption of a singular reality. According to the book, drinking water is a central focus on Mars, where it is scarce. Martians use the merging of their bodies with water as a simple example or symbol of how two entities can combine to create a new reality greater than the sum of its parts. The water becomes part of the drinker, and the drinker part of the water.

Psychedelic Psoul is an album by the American psychedelic rock band The Freak Scene (better known as The Deep), and released on Columbia Records in 1967 (see 1967 in music). After the release of the pioneering album, Psychedelic Moods, a year prior, lead member Rusty Evans reassembled the studio-only group to expand on the aspects of the previous effort. Among the material, the band included abnormal sound effects, fuzz guitar motifs, and utilization of tape manipulation, which was most relevant on the instrumental piece, "Grok!". In addition, Psychedelic Psoul incorporated Middle eastern influences, most notably in the tracks "A Million Grains of Sand,” “Rose of Smiling Faces” and “My Rainbow Life", all of which Evans first experimented with while recording the New York rock outfit, The Third Bardo.

In 2013, Murphy co-founded a start-up company called Grok Learning which promotes the easy learning of computational methods to high school students (and teachers). During the global effort to record the 2017 Neutron Star Merger, Murphy led a group at the University of Sydney that confirmed the first radio signals of gravitational waves that were caused by two neutron stars colliding in a galaxy 130 million light-years from Earth. This discovery was made 15 days after these gravitational waves were first reported by an international team of scientists and astronomers. In 2019, Murphy and their PhD student gathered data using the CSIRO's Australia Telescope Compact Array at Narrabri in New South Wales to observe radio emissions created by a shockwave from a mysterious cosmic 'cow' explosion, and potential birth of a black hole.

In 1962, Oberon Zell- Ravenheart (then still using his birth name, Tim Zell) founded the Church of All Worlds, a Neopagan religious organization modeled in many ways (including its name) after the treatment of religion in the novel Stranger in a Strange Land. This spiritual path included several ideas from the book, including non- mainstream family structures, social libertarianism, water-sharing rituals, an acceptance of all religious paths by a single tradition, and the use of several terms such as "grok", "Thou art God", and "Never Thirst". Though Heinlein was neither a member nor a promoter of the Church, there was a frequent exchange of correspondence between Zell and Heinlein, and he was a paid subscriber to their magazine, Green Egg. This Church still exists as a 501(C)(3) religious organization incorporated in California, with membership worldwide, and it remains an active part of the neopagan community today.
