In June 2011 a second single was released on Sub Pop, "How Come? and Good I'm Wishing", and he had already began writing for a second album. Avi began recording a follow-up to his self-titled album in 2012, and in 2013 began producing other artists and side projects in addition to his own material. Avi Buffalo's second album At Best Cuckold was released on 8 September 2014 in Europe, and on 9 September in the US. Avi and a live band toured the US and Europe in support of this album in Autumn of 2014 for a brief amount of time before Avi decided to return to performing, writing and producing new music.

Taking field hollers and other basic Americana-based lyrical content (with plentiful helpings of cursing and lewd rhyming, such as "My dick's as hard as Chinese arthimetic"), Mule tied them to the stripped-down, but loud and noisy guitar of P.W. and the thundering rhythm section of Kimball and Munro. Munro also sang, and some of the more memorable Mule songs (Pent, Mama's Reason to Cry, Rope and the Cuckold) are call-and-response numbers between the two singers. Kimball was the driving force behind the first album, and the EP Wrung.

In 2015 the term cuckservative, a portmanteau of cuckold and conservative, was popularized on the online forum 4chan, and embraced by both internet trolls and the nativist alt-right. The metaphorical "" is represented in a genre of interracial pornography as a masochistic white husband who allows his wife to have sex with a stronger black man, thereby participating in his own symbolic emasculation. In white supremacist vernacular the term is an accusation of yielding to non-white interests on issues such as immigration or modern display of the Confederate flag; however, the term gained use (with some controversy) by more mainstream conservatives to denounce Republicans whose compromises included vote trading, rhetorical restraint in deference to donors, cooperation with Democrats on any particular initiative, or attempting to court voters by making appeals to supposedly liberal ideals.

In the third novel, Simon Darcourt, Arthur Cornish, and Maria Cornish find themselves at the head of the "Cornish Foundation" and are called upon to decide what projects deserve funding. Their first assay into the world of humanist patronage is to support a precocious composer in completing an unfinished opera by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled Arthur of Britain, or the Magnanimous Cuckold, and then bringing it to the stage at Stratford, Ontario. The novel follows the course of this project from inception to completion. At the same time, the archetypes in the opera are reflected in the personal lives of those involved: Arthur and Maria as the central "ruling" couple, Arthur's best friend Geraint Powell, a Welsh actor- turned-director as Lancelot, Simon Darcourt as the household cleric and writer, and so on.

During the twelfth century, as English common law emerged, the punishment of adultery was shifted from the secular authorities to the ecclesiastical ones. Ecclesiastical authorities did not impose death penalties, but the killing of a male adulterer by a male cuckold was not outlawed in secular law, leaving scope for lawful revenge-killing. In time, however, adultery came exclusively to be a concern of the Church courts, and was not a crime at common law.

The message does not directly accuse Finn's wife, but is instead a series of metaphors: ‘A wooden stake (an alder stake in one version) in a fence of silver, hellebore among edible plants, husband of a wanton woman, a cuckold among the well taught Féni, and heather on Úalann of the Luigne’.

The storyline follows the writing and then production of the opera, and the plot of the story arcs in a way that parallels the legend of King Arthur, and in particular the triangle of King Arthur, his queen, Guenevere, and Lancelot. Geraint Powell, an actor who serves on the Board of the Cornish Foundation, by deception fathers a child by Maria Cornish, forcing Arthur Cornish to choose between a generous or vindictive response. The Lyre of Orpheus explores not only the world of early eighteenth century opera, but also follows Darcourt's research into the life of the benefactor and artist, Francis Cornish, leading to a discovery that forces Darcourt to conclude that a painting previously attributed to an unknown fifteenth century painter, known only as "The Alchemical Master", was in fact the work of Francis Cornish himself.
