Alan Villiers, a windjammer captain and author, came to San Diego on a lecture tour. Seeing Star of India decaying in the harbor, he publicized the situation and inspired a group of citizens to form the "Star of India Auxiliary" in 1959 to support the restoration of the ship. Progress was still slow, but in 1976, Star of India finally put to sea again.

In 2000, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the museum, the Hansekogge, a ship constructed around 1380 that was found in the Weser river in 1962, was presented to the public after having undergone a lengthy process of conservation in a large preservative-filled basin. The museum consists of the building planned by Hans Scharoun as well as several museum ships in the Old Harbour of Bremerhaven, including the Seute Deern windjammer. Since 2005, the buildings and 8 ships are listed as protected heritage ensemble.

Burt designed and invented the Equatorial Sextant for the purpose of getting quickly accurate bearings and positions of ships out at sea. It was designed to know exactly where a ship was located in the world without having to do long hand time consuming mathematical calculations. He was inspired to devise such an instrument while on a return trip from England aboard a windjammer. When the instrument was properly manipulated it was capable of reading a ship's azimuths, altitude, time and declination with one observation.

Edgar Erikson (son of Gustaf Erikson, who died in 1947) found he could no longer operate either Passat or Pamir at a profit, primarily due to changing regulations and union contracts governing employment aboard ships; the traditional 2-watch system on sailing ships was replaced by the 3-watch system in use on motor-ships, requiring more crew.Stark, The Last Time Around Cape Horn. A ship named Lundy Island, 3,095 tons, was captured and sunk on 10 January 1917 by the SMS Seeadler, a windjammer of the German navy, flying the Norwegian flag. Lundy figures in the 1919 novel Last of the Grenvilles (1919) by Frederick Harcourt Kitchin (published under his pseudonym, Bennett Copplestone). The island is mentioned in a section of W. N. P. Barbellion's Journal of a Disappointed Man (1919), titled "On Lundy Island". Lundy has prominently featured in John Bellairs' juvenile gothic mystery The Secret of the Underground Room (1990).

The schooner Timberwind is a historic former pilot boat, now berthed in Portland, Maine. Built in 1931, she served as a pilot boat (named Portland Pilot) in Portland Harbor until 1969, and was then converted into a schooner as part of the Maine "windjammer" tourist fleet. She is one of a very small number of early 20th-century purpose-built pilot boats that has survived major alteration, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. She moved to Rockport in 1969 and then to Belfast in 2015.

Port Lincoln was visited in 1939 by English travel author Eric Newby, while he was crew in the 4-masted barque Moshulu, which anchored outside of Boston Island. Moshulu had taken 82 days to sail to Port Lincoln from Belfast in ballast (a fast passage for a windjammer), but there was no grain to be had there, even though Moshulu waited at anchor for most of January. The crew was given shore leave in Port Lincoln, encountering large amounts of Australian wine. Moshulu eventually carried on to Port Victoria for cargo.

In October 1998, Hurricane Mitch was responsible for the loss of the S/V Fantome, a four-masted schooner operated by Windjammer. All 31 crew members aboard perished; passengers and other crew members had earlier been offloaded in Belize. The story was recorded in the book The Ship and The Storm by Jim Carrier (). The ship, which was sailing in the center of the hurricane, experienced up to 50-foot (15 m) waves and over 100 mph (160 km/h) winds, causing the Fantome to founder off the coast of Honduras.

The Pierce-Arrow gasoline engine has been replaced, first with a war-surplus GMC gasoline engine at the RGS, then at Knott's with a war-surplus in-line 6 cylinder Diamond-Reo gasoline engine. In 1997 the engine was replaced once more with a Cummins Diesel engine supported with an I-beam frame extension salvaged from the demolished Windjammer Surf Racers roller coaster. In late 1973, the park received ex-D&RGW; K-27 #464, a Mikado locomotive. However, due to clearance issues, Knott's later donated the locomotive to the Huckleberry Railroad in Flint, Michigan.

He became music director at the Alhambra Theatre in 1913, and later worked at other theatres including the Winter Garden Theatre. Christian Radich is well known through the international release in 1958 of the Cinemiracle widescreen movie Windjammer. Christian Radich sailed to the United States in 1976 as part of the Bicentennial Celebration, and partook in the Operation Sail parade in New York Harbor on 4 July 1976. On the return journey, he was wrecked off Yarmouth and later picked up by the steamer Romeo. Turner arrived home two days after his parents had given him up lost at sea. Turner shipped out again on the Fontabelle headed for the West Indies, and in 1881 joined the Star of Australia bound for the colonies with immigrants. Three years later Turner made another trip to Australia on the windjammer Oaklands, but on arrival at Port Adelaide, relinquished his merchantman and joined the Protector crew as an able seaman in 1884.

Wreck of the Preußen On 5 November 1910 Brighton was involved in a collision with the windjammer Preußen south of Newhaven. Brighton returned to Newhaven to summon aid, and the tug Alert was sent to assist Preußen, which was towed towards Dover. It was intended to anchor her off Dover but both anchor chains broke and Preußen was driven onto rocks where she sank as a result of the damage inflicted to her. The master of Brighton was found to be responsible for the accident and lost his licence as a result.

The Oceanographic Survey Ship and the Nathaniel Bowditch, a high-speed catamaran passenger ferry serving downtown Boston and Salem, were named for him, as was a lunar crater. Additionally, a William Hand designed Schooner built in 1922, which is currently part of the Maine Windjammer fleet and sails out of Rockland, Maine, is also named after Nathaniel Bowditch. In 1955, a book for younger readers, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, was published by Jean Lee Latham, portraying Bowditch's life dramatized and fictionalized. A serious modern biography is Robert E. Berry's Yankee Stargazer, published in 1941.

Bekka led the Philadelphia area band, The Daves, which released one album on the Pyramid label in 1988. The Daves were composed of Bekka Eaton: vocals and trombone, Mike Mennies: keyboards and vocals, Jim Ericson: guitar and vocals, Jerry Getz bass and vocals (replaced by Garry Lee in 1988), and Ronny Crawford: drums. While they were one of the premier local Philadelphia club bands, they distinguished themselves with their touring schedule which took them from Chicago to South Carolina. Their multi-week-long stints at the Windjammer (Isle of Palms, SC) were legendary for their overflow audiences.

She fished the once bountiful Grand Banks of the North Atlantic from her home port of Gloucester from 1926 to 1953 under Captain Jeff Thomas and later, Captain Leo Hynes. Adventure was the biggest money-maker of the time, landing nearly $4 million worth of cod and halibut in her fishing career. Her retirement marked the end of the American dory-fishing schooner in the North Atlantic. In 1954, Adventure was sold to Donald Hurd, Dayton Newton, and Herbert Beizer and refitted for the windjammer tourist trade, carrying vacationing passengers up and down the Maine coast.

According to reports in The Wall Street Journal and elsewhere, Windjammer had been in serious financial trouble since 2007 or earlier. The Journal article explained that crews had gone unpaid, and the fleet of ships was found to be in disrepair. There were also reports that cruise passengers had complained of being stranded, either aboard the ships or at intermediate destinations. After ceasing operations for several weeks, the company planned to relaunch cruises on its fleet of ships, starting with s/v Legacy on November 3, 2007 followed by the other ships in the spring of 2008.

Small fairings had been mounted on two of the show models at the US dealer show in Las Vegas. These Honda-designed fairings were to be manufactured in the US by the Vetter Fairing Company and sold as Hondaline accessories; but they never went into production after the molds were accidentally destroyed. Consequently, the Gold Wing was born into the world naked, lacking saddlebags and having no place for luggage, without even a windshield. This created a golden opportunity for accessory manufacturers, who quickly offered a range of fairings and luggage accessories, particularly the Craig Vetter Windjammer series.

The fourth annual flagship event took place September 20, 21 and 22 at the Windjammer, Isle of Palms, SC. Fans were able to enjoy three nights of shows, afternoon acoustic performances a jam session, and "Camp Carolina" events (at which fans could interact and compete with the performers) throughout the weekend. The event was headlined by Tony Lucca. Other performers included: Bracher Brown, Todd Carey, Matt Duke, Riley Etheridge Jr., Jerad Finck, Sam Grow, Ernie Halter, Caleb Hawley, Brendan James, Jared McCloud, Sarah Miles, John Milstead, Andrea Nardello, Curtis Peoples, Ken Yates, Honor By August, and Ingram Hill.

Mauna Loa continued on the Hawaii–California–Philadelphia/New York service, occasionally making extra voyages from Los Angeles to Honolulu when dictated by cargo bookings. One such extra voyage occurred in February 1936 when she carried almost a full load of building materials for family dwellings in Hawaii. In August 1936, Mauna Loa diverted to respond to a distress call issued by the windjammer Pacific Queen some southwest of Los Angeles. Pacific Queen had sailed from San Diego in July with a crew of 32—most of whom were Sea Scouts—and had been missing for two weeks.

The four-masted barque Moshulu, the ship on which Eric Newby, the author of The Last Grain Race, sailed. She is today a restaurant ship at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States Moshulu was made famous by the books of Eric Newby. At the age of 19, he apprenticed aboard the Moshulu, joining the ship in Belfast in 1938 and sailing to Port Lincoln in Australia with a load of ballast stone in 82 days, a good passage for a windjammer. "Moshulu" took 4,875 tons of bagged grain on board in Port Victoria and began her return voyage to Ireland in the spring of 1939.

He spent three years restoring the vessel to her original sailing condition and outfitting her hold for passengers. Lewis R. French was among the first schooners sailing out of the North End Shipyard, owned by Foss, in Rockland, Maine as part of the "Maine Windjammer Fleet." In 1986, Foss sold the schooner to his brother-in-law Dan Pease, who sailed and captained the Lewis R. French out of Rockland and then Camden until 2003. That year, she was purchased from Pease by Garth Wells, her current owner and co- captain with his wife Jenny Tobin, and now sails out of Camden.

Her owners were the Cox brothers, and she was named for Stephen Taber, a lawyer and politician living in Roslyn, New York. Until about 1920 she worked primarily in the area around New York Harbor, although she was briefly adapted for carrying passengers in 1900 and 1902 when the coasting business was slow. In 1920 she was sold to a captain in Maine, and operated in and around Penobscot Bay. In 1946 she was sold to Captain Boyd Build, who adapted her for the "windjammer" tourist trade, a role she has served since, now based in Rockland, Maine.

The audio was recorded at Smart Studios, in Madison, Wisconsin. In 1979, Sohmers recorded the Windjammer EP (Extended play) at Pepperhead Studios in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. The album consisted of songs he penned, featuring guitarist Scott Holmstrom, along with Schoeder, Gochberg, Jevne and some guest stars from other bands including Butch Vig in his first recording session for another artist other than his own band on the song “Blind,” and Art Baldocci and Greg Biela of Heartsfield on “Spinning My Wheels”. Sohmers' song “Good Old Friend” was also recorded but not released on the EP. In 2017, Sohmers wrote Beasties: a Sci-fi Rock Opera, as a stage musical.

Later that month, she sailed to Washington, D.C., to participate in ceremonies honoring the birthday of George Washington. That spring, Willis A. Lee played "movie star," when she was filmed by the Louis de Rochemont studios for a part in the cinerama production, "Windjammer," while she operated on ASW exercises in the North Atlantic. She subsequently participated in the International Naval Review held that summer at Hampton Roads, Va., before becoming part of a large combined NATO fleet that conducted intensive ASW and air defense exercises in the North Atlantic that autumn. During those maneuvers, Willis A. Lee crossed the Arctic Circle for the first time on 20 September.

He was the son of Henry Howard, 19th Earl of Suffolk, and his American wife, the former Margaret Hyde Leiter (aka "Daisy"), sister of Lady Curzon and daughter of the American businessman Levi Leiter. The 19th Earl was killed in the First World War at the Battle of Istabulat, Iraq. After leaving the Royal Naval College, Osborne, at 15, he attended Radley College, but quit in 1923 to join the windjammer Mount Stewart as an apprentice officer. After his return from a round the world voyage, he was commissioned in the Scots Guards but was later asked to resign from his post by his superiors because of his "wild ways".

During the voyage, on a rare mid-ocean meeting in the South Atlantic, Priwall passed by the Finnish barque Lawhill en route from South Australia to Europe with a cargo of grain; Priwall also sighted the liner . The ship rounded Cape Horn on 21 July in the gale-force winds of the southern winter as the last commercial windjammer completing this east-to-west passage, and reached the sheltered anchorage of Corral, Chile. There the crew maneuvered the mizzen upper top yard to the foremast to replace its broken upper top yard. Continuing on to Talcahuano to off-load freight, she finally arrived at Valparaiso on 3 September 1939.

The southern end of the spit is mostly state park, with little to no buildings or development. North of the junction of 101 and 1A, the area is much less developed, dominated mostly by a large salt marsh conservation area, with small businesses and bungalows along Ocean Boulevard (NH 1A). North of Winnacunnet Road (and outside the CDP), a second area of heavier development begins with Kings Highway parallel to Ocean Boulevard, and cross streets numbered from 1st Street in the south to 19th Street in the north. The resort ends at the Windjammer Hotel at its northern end, at the junction of NH 27 and NH 1A.

Windjammer Surf Racers was a unique coaster; it involved small Wild Mouse-like trains running on a full size track. There were two independent tracks (red and yellow) that were constructed parallel to each other, in which the purpose of the ride was to pit both tracks in a race against each other. The coaster's rider load/unloading platform did not have an airgate system to keep queuing guests clear from advancing vehicles within the station. The ride was dressed as a tribute to the fabled Southern California beach culture, complete with towering palms trees, beach sand, a miniature lagoon, a scaled-down lifeguard watch tower, and other beach-worthy props.

Libaek was born in Norway in 1938, trained as both a pianist and an actorAustralian Music Centre - Australian Composer Biography: Sven Libaek and is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York.Music Arrangers Guild of Australia He first achieved international recognition with a role in the Louis de Rochemont film Windjammer in which he both acted and performed as piano soloist with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Libaek first came to Australia in 1960 as a member of the band the Windjammers, which toured the United States and Australia to promote the film. Shortly after the group broke up, Libaek and his wife returned to Australia to live.

In 1909 he sold her to the three sons of Isaac H. Evans, who renamed her after their father in 1919. She continued to work in the oyster trade under sail until 1946, when her masts were removed and a motor installed. Use of this type of ship in the oystering industry declined in the years after World War II, with many of the existing schooners either scrapped or laid up and left to rot. Isaac H. Evans was purchased by a couple from Rockland, Maine in 1971, the first in a series of "new" vessels to join the existing Maine windjammer fleet established around 1940.

The cargo of coal caught fire while he was serving as third mate on board the windjammer Knight of St. Michael, and for his successful efforts in fighting the fire and saving the ship, Lightoller was promoted to second mate. In 1895, at age 21 and a veteran of the dangers at sea, he obtained his mate's ticket and left sailing ships for steamships. After three years of service in Elder Dempster's African Royal Mail Service on the West African coast, he nearly died from a heavy bout of malaria. Abandoning the sea, Lightoller went to the Yukon in 1898 to prospect for gold in the Klondike Gold Rush.

The SMS Seeadler, an auxiliary cruiser windjammer and merchant raider, commanded by Felix von Luckner managed successful attacks on Allied shipping in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. During her career she captured sixteen vessels and sank most of them. In August 1917 SMS Seeadler was wrecked at the island of Mopelia in French Polynesia so the Germans established a small colony on the island which housed them and several Allied prisoners, most of whom were American. Eventually when starvation proved to be an urgent concern, Luckner and his crew left the prisoners on the uninhabited island, from which they were eventually rescued, and set sail in a lifeboat for Fiji.

Sherman went to First Division Productions where he assisted on Sunset Range (1935) and Rainbow's End (1935), both starring Hoot Gibson. He went to Monogram for Honeymoon Limited (1935), then Republic for Melody Trail (1935) with Gene Autry, The Hit Parade (1936) and Manhattan Music Box (1937); Sol Lesser for The Mine with the Iron Door (1936), The Border Patrolman (1936), Gangster's Bride (1937), and The Mysterious Stranger (1937). For George Hirliman he worked on Daniel Boone (1936), Millionaire Playboy (1937), Hollywood Cowboy (1937) (on which he reportedly did some uncredited directing), and Windjammer (1937).George Sherman, 82, director of many low- budget westerns: [NORTH SPORTS FINAL, C Edition] Chicago Tribune 20 Mar 1991: 12.

Something clicked, however, in the following eight games that saw Clarkson win all eight while not being held below four goals a single time and scoring eight goals twice. Combined with the two wins against UNH, Clarkson set a new program record for longest win streak at ten while also earning their coach his 200th all-time win. The win streak came to an end with a 3–3 tie against Robert Morris in the semifinal game of the Windjammer Classic. Clarkson won that game's shoutout, the program's first ever, and advanced to the championship of the tournament, where they bested Vermont 3–1 for their first ever in-season tournament championship.

Gould composed Broadway scores such as Billion Dollar Baby and Arms and the Girl; film music such as Delightfully Dangerous, Cinerama Holiday, and Windjammer; music for television series such as World War One and the miniseries Holocaust; and ballet scores including Interplay, Fall River Legend, and I'm Old Fashioned. Gould's music, commissioned by symphony orchestras all over the United States, was also commissioned by the Library of Congress, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the American Ballet Theatre, and the New York City Ballet. His ability to seamlessly combine multiple musical genres into formal classical structure, while maintaining their distinctive elements, was unsurpassed, and Gould received three commissions for the United States Bicentennial.

There she sat on a mooring with minimal necessary upkeep until 1994. In the early nineties with a dwindling market for windjammer cruises which leave out most modern amenities kids became the new direction for the Coastwise Packet Company - the original name for what is now also The Black Dog Tall Ships. Because of the success of these "Kids Cruises" on board the Shenandoah, Alabama was to be rebuilt by the Five Corners Shipbuilding Company headed by Gary Maynard a former First Mate that sailed on the Shenandoah. Most of the work was done in Vineyard Haven with the vessel afloat on her mooring using Captain Douglas' own power tools and shop space.

There was a number 0 issue published in November 1995. Grell wrote and drew the covers, but did none of the interior artwork, for issues #1–4 of the Shaman's Tears spinoff series Bar Sinister (June – September 1995) from Windjammer, the creator-owned imprint of Valiant Comics. This series followed the adventures of a group of escaped government experimental subjects, animals genetically engineered to human intelligence and, basically, human form, as potential bio- weapons. During this time period, Grell wrote and penciled a Shaman's Tears/Turok Dinosaur Hunter cross-over limited series for Valiant Comics and a two issue Turok limited series entitled Turok The Hunted, as well as several fill-in issues of the ongoing Turok series.

Brake's landmark is the "Telegraph", built in 1846 under the Oldenburg Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August as an integral part of an optical telegraph line between Bremen and Bremerhaven. Since 1960, the headquarters of the Shipping Museum of the Oldenburg Weser ports has housed exhibition pieces of the "Telegraph" on seven floors in all, which stand as a valuable document in the shipping history of Oldenburg's Lower Weser area. Ship portraits, ship models, figureheads, sea charts, nautical instruments, and souvenirs brought from overseas are interesting witnesses to a long bygone time, and bring the epoch of the windjammer captains back to life. Bits of the Pamir shipwreck recall the time when that ship capsized and sank in a hurricane.

The ship was ordered by Admiral Cruises and was intended to be called the Future Seas and join the other Admiral ships, the and the . However, when Royal Caribbean merged with Admiral in 1987, the Admiral brand was dissolved and the newbuild (still under construction) was incorporated into the Royal Caribbean fleet. A few signature Royal Caribbean brand elements were added, including the Viking Crown and Windjammer Cafe. The ship was originally named Nordic Empress and was the final Royal Caribbean ship whose name did not end with "of the Seas" until the name was changed to match the rest of the fleet following an extensive rebuilding that ended on 8 May 2004.

Guests are seated in two shifts on deck four of the main dining (5:30 pm ship's time) and 8:00 pm (ship's time) or anytime in my time dining from 5:00–830 PM (ship's time) on deck 5. The shows in The Palladium (the main theater, found on decks 5 and 6), are designed around the dining room times. The ship also contains a conference center, a library with an honor checkout system and a buffet called The Windjammer Market Place, 2 shuffle board courts, a rock wall with areas for climbers of various skills, a photo shop, several stores specializing on jewelry, souvenirs, cigars, cigarettes, and liquor, and a piano area.

Setnor offers auditioned and non-auditioned choirs and instrumental ensembles to members of the Syracuse University community. There are six choral ensembles (Concert Choir, Hendrick's Chapel Choir, Oratorio Society, University Singers, Women's Choir, and Windjammer Vocal Jazz Ensemble); Opera Workshop; five large, instrumental concert ensembles (Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Morton B. Schiff Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Band); the Samba Laranja Brazilian Ensemble and two athletic bands (The Pride of the Orange, Syracuse University Marching Band, and the Sour Sirtus Society, Basketball Pep Band). In addition to these larger offerings, there are a number of smaller chamber ensembles including a Contemporary Music Ensemble, a Baroque Ensemble, a Percussion Ensemble, and both string and wind chamber ensembles.

Huddie William Ledbetter (; January 23, 1888 – December 6, 1949), better known by the stage name Lead Belly, was an American folk and blues singer, musician and songwriter notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the folk standards he introduced, including his renditions of "Goodnight, Irene", "Midnight Special", "Cotton Fields", and "Boll Weevil". Lead Belly usually played a twelve-string guitar, but he also played the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, and windjammer. In some of his recordings, he sang while clapping his hands or stomping his foot. Lead Belly's songs covered a wide range of genres and topics including gospel music; blues about women, liquor, prison life, and racism; and folk songs about cowboys, prison, work, sailors, cattle herding, and dancing.

By early 1915, most of the armed raiders had either been hunted down and sunk or else had run out of fuel and been interned in neutral ports. SMS Seeadler, the three-masted windjammer that raided the Atlantic and Pacific in an age of dreadnoughts (painting by Christopher Rave) Hoping to revive commerce raiding, the Imperial Navy equipped the impounded three-masted sailing ship Pass of Balmaha (1,571 tons) with two 105 mm guns hidden behind hinged gunwales, several machine guns, and two carefully hidden 500 HP auxiliary engines. She was commissioned as the auxiliary cruiser Seeadler ("Sea Eagle"). As he was almost the only officer in the German Navy with extensive experience of large sailing ships, Luckner was appointed to command her.

Even with WNKY-DT2 carrying CBS, WLKY remains available on some cable systems in the eastern half of the Bowling Green market.

The title of the former book refers to the last grain race before the outbreak of World War II. The latter contains more than 150 of the photographs Newby took while aboard. Whilst windjammers exist and sail the seas to this day, the last windjammer carrying cargo was the Peruvian Omega (ex Drumcliff) which was in use until her loss in 1958. Moshulu, like all grain ships, was lightly manned; during Newby's time on the ship the total crew numbered only 28, including 4 officers, the cook, the steward, and 8 sailors in each of the port and starboard watches. Routine tasks such as wearing the ship required every crew member to be involved, meaning lost sleep for the free watch.

Fastenings were originally treenails, but were replaced during restoration by spiking. According to the current owners' website and to researcher and author Virginia L. Thorndike, the schooner was built by the sons of Maine storekeeper Lewis R. French and named for their father. In Thorndike's book Windjammer Watching on the Coast of Maine, the author writes that the three sons had an agreement with their father that he would finance the building of the vessel, and yet he never did. They then retaliated, in a way, by naming the schooner after him, thus forcing the elder Mr. French to honor a maritime tradition which decreed that any living person with a vessel named for them must supply her with a set of flags.

Gary Sohmers attained his love of collecting from his father who collected campaign buttons. At the age of eight, he began selling his toys at garage sales, and took an interest in learning the relevance and history of the items. Sohmers was influenced also by his father's love for songwriting. He formed the first incarnation of his rock 'n' roll band, Windjammer in the 1970s. Sohmers recruited an array of musicians who performed in other local Madison bands including Jeff Walker of Spooner (band), Robert Julius Corbit of The Waves, Paul “Radar” Schoeder of The Rousers, Gil Jevne of Punch, and Dave Gochberg of Task Force. In 1983, Sohmers recorded an original song co-written with Geno Barone, with Garbage (band) musicians Butch Vig and Steve Marker entitled “Dinosaur Rock”.

James Bisset was born in Liverpool, UK, on 15 July 1883, the son of Scottish father, James Smith Bisset of Blairgowrie, Perthshire, UK and an English mother, Sarah Ellen Butler of Bolton, Lancashire, UK. The second of six children, James attended St Saviour's Infant School in Liverpool and later the Granby Street Board School. In 1897 at fourteen years of age, he was apprenticed as an office clerk in the Liverpool branch of the London and Provincial Marine Insurance Company. After listening to the sea stories of one of his "uncles" (a close friend of the Bisset family), James decided to stow away on a windjammer in 1897 but was discovered and returned home. Late in 1897, he was apprenticed as a junior clerk in the Liverpool office of the Anglo-American Oil company.

He was most well known for his Rim World series and John Grimes novels, both of which have a distinctly naval flavor. In the latter, Chandler's principal hero John Grimes is an enthusiastic sailor who has occasional adventures on the oceans of various planets. In the books, there is a repeated reference to an obsolete type of magnetically powered spaceship known as the "Gaussjammer", remembered nostalgically by "old timers" – which is modelled on the windjammer. The heyday of the Gaussjammer, some centuries earlier than the Rim Worlds books, is the setting of the less well-known The Deep Reaches of Space (1964) which has undisguised autobiographical elements: its protagonist is a seaman turned science-fiction writer who travels to the future and uses his nautical experience to save a party of humans stranded on an alien planet.

Thereafter Stanley got a berth in a big sheep station some four hundred miles up-country, where a bottle of whiskey cost as much as two sheep.

The largest trees in the world grew along the south shores of False Creek and English Bay and provided (amongst other things) masts for the world's windjammer fleets and the increasingly large vessels of the Royal Navy. One famous sale of trees cut from the Jericho neighbourhood (west of Kitsilano), was a special order for the Celestial Emperor of China consisting of dozens of immense beams for the construction of The Gate of Heavenly Peace in the Forbidden City, Beijing. Millworkers and lumberers were from a wide variety of backgrounds – mostly Scandinavians and Nootkas – who were also brought to the inlet to help with the local whaling industry. At first, Squamish typically did not work in the mills. First Vancouver City Council meeting after the Great Vancouver Fire in 1886. A former river pilot, John (Jack) Deighton, set up a small (24' x 12') saloon on the beach about a mile west of the sawmill in 1867 where mill property and its "dry" policies ended.
