The 2011 WAMi Awards were announced on Saturday 28 May at The Bakery, James Street Northbridge, with the event hosted by Dylan Lewis (Video Hits) and Dom Alessio (triple j‘s Home and Hosed). Record producer and engineer, the late Shaun O'Callaghan, The Waifs and Pete Carroll (former RTRFM manager and manager The Panics) were all inducted into the WAM Hall of Fame.

Leach became tired of percussion and began playing guitar when Matt Chequer joined on drums. In 2002 Little Birdy was formed, named after the Ween song of the same name. A demo, leaked to radio, was played on alternative stations. A friend of the band dropped a copy at band manager Phil Stevens' home (manager of The Waifs, John Butler Trio and The Flairz).

As a child he was made to eat cereal every day. He couldn't do it and in later years developed an inferiority complex about it. He then murdered his parents with a Black and Decker jigsaw and inherited their estate. He surrounded himself with waifs-and-strays that, like him, were hooked on cereal and slowly built up an army of hockey stick carrying box-men.

During the tour Donna met Ben Weaver, a United States singer-songwriter. They later married and have a son. In 2003, the band also participated in Big Day Out, an Australian travelling music festival. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2003, the Waifs won in four categories, Best Roots and Blues Album, Best Independent Album, Producer of the Year and Engineer of the Year from eight nominations.

In 1980 Ovenden was prosecuted but found not guilty of fraud pertaining to his involvement in the production of hoax calotypes, purportedly images of Victorian street children by a photographer "Francis Hetling". The images were actually taken by Ovenden's friend, Howard Grey, and re-photographed and printed by Ovenden.Francis Hetling's Victorian Waifs. Some of the images had been shown at the National Portrait Gallery.

After the cancellation of Emergency!, Tighe continued to work in episodic television, appearing on Ellery Queen, Cos, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Love Boat. He also appeared on the CBS Library production of "Orphans, Waifs, and Wards" and as Thomas Jefferson in an adaptation of the John Jakes novel The Rebels in 1979. During the 80s, Tighe taught drama at USC.

The Parkerville Children’s Home Bush Cemetery was part of the Parkerville Children’s Home (originally The League of Charity Home for Waifs and Stray Babies). The Home was founded in 1903 by Anglican nuns led by Sister Kate. Parkerville Children's Home is located in Parkerville, Western Australia, and continues to operate. The numbers of children at Parkerville Children's Home increased from 22 in 1903, to approximately 109 in 1914.

Nick Page, played by Mark Stevens, made his first appearance on 22 July 1988. Stevens joined the cast of Neighbours soon after taking part in Young Talent Time. Stevens' first scene consisted of Nick trying to find his stolen Walkman. Josephine Monroe, author of Neighbours: the first 10 years described Nick as one Helen Daniels' (Anne Haddy) many waifs and strays, a budding artist and having a recalcitrant personality.

He provided money for the Y.M.C.A. scheme at Sheffield, leading to the establishment of the Association Buildings Co. Ltd. and the headquarters buildings. In 1881 he entertained all the members at Chatsworth. He built and founded the Jeffie Bainbridge Home for Waifs and Strays at the corner of Norfolk Street and Surrey Street in Sheffield in memory of his wife, the building being opened by the Duke and Duchess of Portland.

It is found only in the central United States, primarily the Ozarks, the Cumberland Plateau, and the middle Mississippi Valley. Hernan Bas (born 1978 in Miami, Florida, United States) is an artist based in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated in 1996 from the New World School of the Arts in Miami. Bas is known for his depictions of waifs and dandies, who are somewhat based on his own experiences, as well as his work with the material SlimFast and the paranormal. Overtime, Bas says, these characters have grown in his paintings and taken on different roles.

When Lindsey Corkhill (Claire Sweeney) sold No.9, the Murray family moved in. The Murrays were billed as an attempt to return the show to its original form of conventional families, rather than the waifs and strays it had become better known for. The Murrays were a hard-working, upright, working-class family, and comparisons could be drawn between them and the earlier Grant family, with Steve filling a similar role to that of Barry Grant (Paul Usher).

The success of Three led to its release in the US in 2002 and two tours of the US followed. The band supported the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer as well as playing at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and the South by Southwest Festival. The band also played at the Splendour in the Grass Festival in Australia. Butler, his manager Phil Stevens and fellow Western Australian folk artists, The Waifs, founded Jarrah Records in July 2002.

McNabb's version was pressed as a promo single. The album was moderately received critically, with reviewers complaining of a lack of variety in the rock bombast of the record as compared to its two predecessors. 2001 also saw the issue of a demos and outtakes collection, Waifs and Strays, which included previously unreleased material and alternate versions of familiar McNabb chestnuts. The Waifs performed across Australia in September and October on the SunDirtWater Tour. It started in Broome, and ended at Legs 11, a concert for breast cancer research. In November, the group announced a collaboration with label mates, John Butler Trio, for the Union of Soul Tour in January – February 2008. The tour had five concerts, with shows in various Western Australian cities, Denmark, Margaret River, Swan Valley, and two gigs at the Fremantle Arts Centre.

The characters Heathcliff in Emily Brontë's 1847 novel Wuthering Heights and Jo, the crossing sweeper in Charles Dickens' 1852 novel Bleak House are waifs. Curley's first motion picture was Tangled Relations (1912). She played one of the children in a movie which starred Florence Lawrence and Owen Moore. For an audition for The Straight Road in 1914, Pauline was dressed as a boy to land a part as an orphan; a variety of such roles followed, "cornering the market in orphans and waifs". In 1915 she played the ingenue Claudia Frawley in Life Without Soul, an adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Additionally, she was involved in the restoration of churches in Laughton. Being a devoted Anglo Catholic she would hold services on her yacht, the Ariadne. In addition to the many churches Emily Ingram built or renovated, she built a church home for boys, near Hoar Cross. In 1963 a magazine called Our Waifs and Strays reported that some of the boys had seen sightings of a friendly and useful ally thought to be Emily Ingram's ghost.

In 2017, 24 albums claimed the top spot, including Michael Bublé's Christmas, and seven acts, The xx, Dune Rats, Busby Marou, The Waifs, Harry Styles, Paul Kelly and Gang of Youths, achieved their first number-one album in Australia.

Lee was born in Wellington, Shropshire. He was adopted as a child and grew up in Solihull in the West Midlands – his adoptive parents separated when he was four, and he was raised by his mother. He attended Solihull School, a local independent school, on a part scholarship, and received what he calls a "waifs and strays bursary" due to his status as an adoptee. He participated in his school's mountain-walking club, which went on regular excursions to Snowdonia, Wales.

The 1931 Census of England and Wales, County Report Part II described the boundary change as : " Areas altered between 26th April, 1931 and 30th June, 1934, showing constitution as at the latter date, in terms of constitution as at the former date, together with particulars of acreage and population". In 1885, The Standon Home was established as the only second boy's home in the Waifs and Strays' Society. Miss Maria Anderdon laid the foundation stone after she donated £2,000 to the new home.

As from September 2010, it has an Internal Service Error. With Butler, Shoesmith and Jason McGann on drums, John Butler Trio was formed in Fremantle in 1998 and independently released the John Butler album in December. It was produced by Butler and included re-recorded versions of two tracks from his Searching for Heritage. The trio toured throughout Western Australia in 1999, then The Waifs invited Butler to perform solo on their Australian tour – he also performed his own gigs.

The group commenced a year-long tour of Australia to support the album. Their second album, Shelter Me, was recorded in Adelaide at Mixmasters Studios and, produced by the Waifs, it was released in March 1998. MacNeill felt it was "[s]tructured in a cozy, country-like frame of harmonies and acoustic guitars, most of the album works all too well. A few songs, including the soulful "Time to Part", seem a bit askew from the others, but aren't annoying to the senses".

Deller called Helen "The most respected elder of the Robinson clan". She added "Helen was a local artist renowned for her 'interesting' paintings of the locals and her tendency to take in waifs and strays. She also had an unfortunate habit of marrying conmen, bigamists or men who died shortly after their wedding. Helen was always the voice of reason, and when she died (sadly followed closely by Anne Haddy, who played her), the street lost perhaps its most beloved character ever".

She was born Sheila McCairn in Appledore, Devon to an unmarried mother and was left in the care of the Coxes, elderly and impoverished relatives. When she was three, she was taken to her first of many homes run under the supervision of the Waifs and Strays Society (now called The Children's Society). She was to spend all her childhood and youth in care. At nine, while at the Maurice Home for Girls in Ealing, she became a voracious reader.

The band played around Fremantle, supporting other bands such as the Watts and the Flairz. Stevens' first performances were in December 2003, at age eleven, as the drummer for the rock trio, the Flairz, together with Dion Mariani and John Mariani. Meanwhile, Biondillo and Davieson also bonded over a shared interest in skateboarding, the water, and music. Stevens is the daughter of Phil Stevens, who co-founded Jarrah Records with both the John Butler Trio and The Waifs, two bands that he also manages.

Domestically, roots music, seemingly a catch-all term for somewhat more laid- back acoustic music covering blues, country and folk influences, came to some prominence, including Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, The John Butler Trio, and the plaintive harmonies of The Waifs. A number of "blues and roots" festivals have sprung up and are attracting large audiences. As well as these uniquely "Aussie Bands", the mainstreaming of alternative music led to a shift of focus in indie rock in the 2000s. Post-rock indie band Art of Fighting, recorded their debut full-length album, Wires, in 2001.

The Wild Goose Number 1, page 1 The Wild Goose: A Collection of Ocean Waifs was a hand-written newspaper created in late 1867 by Fenian prisoners aboard the Hougoumont, the last ship to transport convicts to Australia. Seven issues of the newspaper were produced, each issue carefully laid out and decorated by hand. Only one copy of each issue was made, which was then read to the convicts aloud. The aim was to provide entertainment and encouragement aboard the ship during its long and arduous voyage to Fremantle.

Hunter appointed Jones the "Ranger General of the Island of Nassau", the legal name then referring to Long Island. For many years, rumours had circulated about the poor conditions at the Stoke school. In July 1896, St Marys Director, Brother Loetus, wrote to the Nelson Evening Mail in an attempt to placate public disquiet generated by numerous escapes from the "orphanage". Most of the escapees had claimed that hunger had driven them to escape. Loetus asserted that these "waifs and larrikins...deemed unfit to be at large", had tired of discipline and had opportunistically escaped. When caught they resorted to the old ‘lack of food’ ruse that was bound to gain maximum sympathy.

In 2015, Boots released her first album, Solitude, on Lost Highway Records Australia, an imprint of Universal Music Australia. Boots collaborated with many musicians on her debut record. She co-wrote two songs, "Middle of Nowhere" and "No Stranger" with Vikki Thorn from The Waifs, the title track, "Solitude," with Davey Lane from You Am I. Alt-country musician Jordie Lane provided vocals on the duet "Lovin' in the Fall," and Bill Chambers appears on the song, "Walk Away." The record was recorded in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Spain and Utah.

In March 2005 the group released their debut EP, Turn Out Your Lights, produced by Ben Franz (The Waifs), which was released nationally in December 2005 on Reverberation. This was followed by the release of the single, "Small Mercies, Sweet Graves" in December and a second EP, Twice the Man in March 2006; which was also produced by Franz. In 2008 the band signed with local independent label, Good Cop Bad Cop and released their debut album, Sweet Talk Your Enemies, on 28 June 2008, distributed nationally through Inertia.

Kellman got his start in the early 1980s as a director for soap operas such as the NBC-TV daytime soap opera series Another World and CBS's As the World Turns. He directed the Showtime adaptation of the long-running Broadway play, Gemini, and the CBS special Orphans, Waifs and Wards. He made his feature film directorial debut with the 20th Century Fox screen adaptation of Key Exchange which starred Brooke Adams. Kellman used the skills he learned on set to become a regular director of many hugely successful TV sitcoms of the 1990s.

Social historian Allen Churchill later described the scene, "Actors in battle dress stood frozen in the act of tossing grenades, bayoneting cringing Huns...Follies Girls as Red Cross nurses, waifs in war-torn undress and goddess of war. Dominating the vivid scene was Miss Kay Laurell representing the Spirit of the Allies, her costume in enough disarray to expose one...breast." While the Follies typically featured light-hearted themes, audiences enjoyed the war themed scene of the 1918 Follies. The show ran until the Armistice with Germany in November 1918.

Girls dressed for dinner on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as most Fridays. They also dressed on Saturdays when dinner was followed by ballroom dancing, girls partnering each other to gramophone records. The Dramatic Society rehearsed on Monday evenings, while Tuesday evenings were given over to "sewing for charity", the main beneficiaries being a bazaar for waifs and strays or the children at the nearby All Saints Convent. One evening was designated "freak night" when girls would wear anything they liked – some hairstyles and attire similar to those of the punks 60 years hence.

The Waifs formed in August 1992 in Albany, Western Australia, as a folk rock band. The Simpson sisters, Donna and Vikki (now Vikki Thorn), had formed a duo, Colours, in Albany to perform cover versions of Bob Dylan and the Everly Brothers at local pubs. Their father, Jimmy Simpson, was a seasonal salmon fisherman at Cosy Corner beach and had bought Donna her first guitar when she was 15. In February 1992, 20-year-old Donna and her 16-year-old sister Vikki headed off in a Kombi van to tour the state as Colours.

It is a rough ride for Disa, as she is severely lacking parenting skills. She also finds it difficult to bond with her baby initially, but with the help of Diane and Mark she begins to settle into life in the Square, and she soon grows to love her baby. Dot Cotton (June Brown), who often attracts waifs and strays, looks after the child when Disa won't or can't. On one occasion, she unwittingly lets a stranger called Ken Raynor (Ian Redford) into the flat, who claims to be Disa's uncle.

John's father is Dom Mariani, the Stems, the Someloves). Dion's father is Laurie Mariani (Dom's brother), a stage lighting engineer. Stevens is the daughter of Phil Stevens, co-founder of Jarrah Records, manager of John Butler Trio and of the Waifs, he is a former live music venue owner.

" Despite Roy's initial "creepy" persona, viewers were eventually shown a different side to the character. He was converted from a creep to an eccentric; a quiet and shy intellectual man, with few social skills and a penchant for trivial information, but underneath it all, a man with "a heart of gold". He has been described as compassionate, moral, sensitive and full of integrity; taking in waifs and strays and helping his neighbours whenever possible. Commenting on his character, Neilson has said, "Roy is absolutely his own person and hugely honourable.

Jen Anderson has composed live music for the black and white silent movie Pandora's Box and to accompany The Sentimental Bloke for the Melbourne International Film Festival. Anderson has toured with Tiddas, Paul Kelly and Archie Roach, and she has also composed the soundtracks for Clara Law's film The Goddess of 1967 and the TV mini-series Simone de Beauvoir's Babies. She has performed on albums for Dave Graney, Hunters and Collectors, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and has produced recordings by Ruby Hunter and the Waifs.

Tee Tee Luce was a Burmese philanthropist and wife of Gordon Luce, a Burma scholar. Tee Tee married Luce, a close friend of her brother Pe Maung Tin, also a Burma scholar, on 20 April 1915. She was a founding member of the Children's Aid and Protection Society. On 1 September 1928, Daw Tee Tee founded Home for Waifs and Strays, an orphanage and school for destitute boys on 114 Inya Road in Rangoon, on land owned by businessman U Ba Oh. The Home eventually served 6,000 boys and secured funding from UNESCO.

She was among the first women ordained Universalist minister, Augusta Jane Chapin being the first on December 7, 1864, in Lansing, Michigan. In 1888 Gillette was the first woman ordained to preach of any denomination in Canada: she was ministering at the Universalist Church of Bloomfield, Prince Edward County, Ontario. Gillette's published works are: "Pebbles From the Shore" (1879), "Floating Leaves" (1881), "Editorials and Other Waifs" (1889) and a memoir of her father, "Memoir of Rev. Edward Mott Woolley" (1855), who was a popular minister in the Universalist Church.

A brief, but similar version was published in the late 19th century, within a collection of Argyllshire traditions titled Waifs and Strays of Celtic Tradition. This version states that a force of Norwegians landed in the area and the locals fled to the upper end of the district, up to the Slugan (gorge) of Glean Domhnuinn (the Deep Glen). The locals were, however, rallied by a young man who slew the Norwegian leader, with either a spear or an arrow. The invaders then lost heart, and were pushed back past the Barbeck river.

Among the students of ethnic studios, Kyrlya was engaged in crowd scenes during production of the first Soviet sound feature film Road to Life. After watching its first episode the film director Nikolai Ekk took notice of the young actor and cast him for the role of the waifs’ leader Mustafa. After graduation the actor worked at the Vostokfilm Studio; in 1934–1936 he played the lama in Buddha’s Vicar by director Yevgeni Ivanov-Barkov. In 1937, Kyrlya moved to Yoshkar-Ola, the capital of Mari-El, to play in the Mari State Drama Theatre.

Initially, the authenticity of the Davenport artifacts was not questioned, and even received good reviews from people like Spencer Baird, of the Smithsonian Institution, and businessman Charles E. Putnam. However, as the debate escalated from the pages of minor scholarly journals to the foremost news in the journal Science, eventually the tablets’ authenticity fell under the criticism of the new Smithsonian spokesman, Cyrus Thomas. Thomas lambasted them as “anomalous waifs,” that had absolutely no supporting, or contextual, evidence to aide in their authenticity. University of Iowa Professor, Marshall McKusick, now refers to the find and the circumstances surrounding it as “The Davenport Conspiracy”.

Her publications mostly advocated temperance, but also with a theological aim, and covering varied topics, had an immense sale, and were very numerous. Balfour contributed many of her shorter tales, in the first instance to the British Workman, Day of Days, Hand and Heart, Animal World, Meliora, Family Visitor, Home Words, The Fireside, Band of Hope Review, and the Onward series. Others were issued as Social Science Tracts, and some published by the Scottish and the British Temperance Leagues. Her temperance tales – "Troubled Waters", "The Burnish Family", "Light at Last", "Drift; a Story of Waifs and Strays" and "Retribution" – were extensively circulated.

Kelly toured North America again in 2006, appearing together with The Waifs at clubs and festivals in several US states and the Canadian province of Alberta. In November–December Kelly undertook his A-Z tour, a series of solo acoustic performances playing 100 of his songs in alphabetical order over four nights, at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Melbourne's Spiegeltent, and at the Sydney Opera House. In 2007 Kelly released Stolen Apples, containing songs based on religious themes; it peaked at No. 8, and achieved gold record status. Following the album's recording, Dan Luscombe left to join The Drones.

The video for the song was produced by ARIA winner Hackett Films, and features John Butler, Leah Purcell, Pat Dodson and Anthony Mundine. Carmody described the 2008 version: A version of the song performed by The Waifs also appears on the 2007 Kev Carmody tribute album, Cannot Buy My Soul. The song is also featured on their 2009 Live from the Union of Soul album where it is co-performed with John Butler. In November 2009 Triple J held a tribute concert for Paul Kelly in Melbourne, with John Butler, Missy Higgins and Dan Sultan performing this song.

They also appeared at various festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Rhythm Festival, Secret Garden Party, Larmer Tree, End Of The Road, Lovebox, Beautiful Days, Standon Calling, Latitude and SXSW. Paul Tkachenko, who performed all brass instruments on "The Last Thing That I Do" also joined the band's touring line-up, playing accordion, banjo, keyboards, mandolin, sousaphone and vocals. The band also supported The Beach Boys in Germany and Australian Folk Rock band The Waifs at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire as well as embarking on a 16-date UK headline tour with support from Manchester-based alternative folk band, The Travelling Band.

He has created original music, songs and soundtracks for Australian Broadcasting Corporation television and radio, and the feature-length documentary I Told You I Was Ill – The Life and Legacy of Spike Milligan. He has also worked with the State Theatre Company of South Australia and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Vikki Thorn and bandmate, Josh Cunningham, had a romantic relationship for 12 years, which according to Thorn "broke down". She also said that "Through all those years of touring, there was that dynamic going on." Thorn wrote the Waifs song, "Sun Dirt Water" (August 2007), for her husband, Matt Thorn, "I wrote the song as a letter to him, just letting him know the things that were important to me and describing the road we were going to travel... It's the last song I wrote, and I wrote it four years ago." The couple have three children and since 2008 reside in Utah.

In 1895, owing to the continuous strain, Rye transferred the two institutions in Peckham and Niagara with their funds to the Church of England Waifs and Strays Society (now The Children's Society). In her farewell report of 1895 she stated that 4000 English and Scottish children then in Canada had been sent out from her home in England. She retired with her sister Elizabeth to 'Baconsthorpe,' Hemel Hempstead, where she spent the remainder of her life. There she died, after four years' suffering, of intestinal cancer on 12 November 1903, and was buried in the churchyard.

Margaret Ahern (February 16, 1921 – August 27, 1999) was an American cartoonist and illustrator. She was educated at the Harrison Art School and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Ahern worked for the Chicago Archdiocese's New World newspaper (later the Chicago Catholic), as well as the 1950s WGN television show, Cartuna. She drew the monthly strips, Beano, from 1948 to 1999, and Angelo, from 1951 to 1954 for The Waifs Messenger, but is best known as the author and cartoonist for An Altar Boy Named Speck, which was syndicated by the National Catholic News Service from 1954 to 1979.

In 2010, San Cisco recorded its debut EP Golden Revolver at Blackbird Studios, in Perth, Western Australia. The EP's five songs were co-produced by Little Birdy drummer Matt Chequer and veteran engineer/producer Steven Schram (Little Birdy, The Waifs, Cat Empire, Little Red). "Golden Revolver", the EP's critically acclaimed lead single, received heavy airplay on national Australian radio station Triple J. XFM London DJ Mike Walsh said of "Golden Revolver"; "If this song was brought to me as the next Vampire Weekend single, I would not be disappointed". The music video for "Golden Revolver" shows the band sailing along Western Australia's Margaret River on a makeshift boat.

Beaufoy supported the introduction of the eight-hour day for all employees and introduced it in his own vinegar works at Lambeth.By virtue of the Factory Act 1833, the eight-hour day had long been a legal requirement for workers under the age of fourteen. In 1881, he chaired a meeting which founded the Church of England Central Society for Providing Homes for Waifs and Strays, later renamed the Church of England Children's Society, and now known as The Children's Society. Series creator Hart Hanson described the actors who had auditioned for the role of Seeley Booth as "pretty boy waifs"; he immediately responded when the head of the studio, Dana Walden, suggested Boreanaz for the role. The Wellesley Nautical School was founded in 1868 by a group of philanthropic businessmen on Tyneside under the leadership of James Hall, 'to provide shelter for Tyneside waifs and train young men for service in both Royal and Merchant Navies.' The first accommodation was on board a Bombay built 74-gun third rate ship of the line HMS Cornwall, which had been launched as HMS Wellesley. This ship was repossessed and replaced circa 1874 by the hulked third rate, HMS Boscawen, moored on the Tyne at North Shields and also renamed T.S. Wellesley. By the early 1900s Wellesley was accepting boys from London, Manchester and Liverpool as well as from Tyneside and Yorkshire.

Bas says that sometimes his friends create better remixes than the original song, his ultimate goal is to do the same with his paintings, "sampling" the artists who inspired him until they are unrecognizable as the original artist, becoming his own work instead. Bas' homosexuality has also been an influence specifically in works like his series Bloodwerk, Bright Young Things, and Supernatural. In his earliest paintings, Bas' characters lived in what the artist described as "fag-limbo," which Bas described as the point between "realizing you're different and telling everyone else that you're different." Bas' artwork mostly consists of "waifs" who play a variety of roles from the Hardy boys to saints.

Encouraged by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury and The Times newspaper and with the financial support of William Rathbone VI, M.P., in 1869 she purchased Avenue House, High Street, Peckham, and with her two younger sisters, in spite of public opposition and prejudice, took there from the streets or the workhouses waifs and strays from the ages of three to sixteen. Fifty girls from Kirkdale industrial school, Liverpool, were soon put under her care ; they were trained in domestic economy and went through courses of general and religious instruction. At Niagara, Canada, Rye also acquired a building which she called 'Our Western Home.' It was opened on 1 December 1869.

Held at Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia, the concert was part of a long-running campaign to protest against a proposal to industrialise the James Price Point area in Broome, Western Australia, Australia. Brown had also addressed a rally on 2 September 2012 in Sydney, Australia. Brown appeared at another concert in support of the Kimberley cause on 24 February 2013, with musicians Missy Higgins and John Butler also appearing, with the event held at The Esplanade in Fremantle, Western Australia. As well as his architectural activities in Sunderland, Frank was also involved with social improvement in the area. In 1871 he was involved with establishing the YMCA in Sunderland and was their first Honorary Secretary until 1875. In 1887 Frank was awarded the contract for a new Sunderland YMCA building (which has long since vanished). On a cold evening in the winter of 1901, (so the story goes), Frank found a 9 year old, barefoot and ragged match seller sheltering on the stairs of his office and Frank decided there and then to do something about it. Frank solicited support from his professional friends in Sunderland and the Waifs Rescue Agency & Street Vendor’s Club was formed as a charity with premises in Lambton Street.

He was a resident DJ at Club Zanzibar in Newark, New Jersey in the 1980s as well, home to the Jersey Sound brand of deep house or garage house. He is the founder of the house music label Madhouse Records (not to be confused with Dave Kelly's reggae label of the same name) whose signings include Roy Ayers and Dennis Ferrer and more recently MadTech Records, whose roster includes No Artificial Colours, Citizen, Kashii, Waze & Odyssey and Waifs & Strays. Qatrania wingi of lower Oligocene Fayum deposits is considered the closest known relative of Ucayalipithecus. As an Abbot's asset, the farming tenant was in early years only in receipt of half of the waifs and strays in the land of the manor. Its land at the time of the abbey's dissolution the underlying title was taken by The Crown, and then or shortly after, was in the tenure of William Cooke, afterwards leased with the manor to Sir William Fitz William in 1550 and afterwards to his widow Joan, who died in 1574; afterwards leased, in 1589, to Richard Lilley, this time without the manor. 10: Cornwall (Chichester: Phillimore, 1979) All of the lordships of the Hundreds of Cornwall belonged, and still belong, to the Duchy of Cornwall, apart from Penwith which belonged to the Arundells of Lanherne. The Arundells sold their lordship to the Hawkins family in 1813 and the Hawkinses went on to sell it to the Paynters in 1832. The Lordship of Penwith came with a great number of rights over the entire hundred. These included: rights to try certain cases of trespass, trespass on the law, debt and detinue, to appoint a jailor for the detention of persons apprehended, to receive high-rent from the lords of the principal manors and to claim the regalia of the navigable rivers and havens, the profits of the royal gold and silver mines, and all wrecks, escheats, deodands, treasure trove, waifs, estrays, goods of felons and droits of admiralty happening within the hundred.

The spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) which may grow up to a maximum of about in length, but are usually somewhat smaller are to be found throughout both islands in slow moving freshwater (including reservoirs) or brackish water along the coasts. They are shy creatures and pose no real threat to humans unless intentionally provoked or approached while nesting. It is generally considered that the few records of both the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) as well as the Orinoco crocodile (Crocodylus intermedius) in the waters and on the coasts of Trinidad and Tobago were, for the most part, waifs from mainland South America.

Sir John Kennaway, 4th Baronet (1879–1956), son, who inherited Escot one year after the end of World War I, and whose first major objective became repairing the damage to the estate caused by the War, for example the loss of many trees cut down to assist the war-effort. At the outbreak of World War II in 1939 Sir John joined the Home Guard, being too old to serve in the main forces. Escot became a home for 40 evacuee children from London, under management of the Waifs and Strays Society, and the Kennaway family moved out temporarily to Fairmile, a house on the estate. Hovever, Sir John enjoyed visiting the children at Escot and having seen the joy induced in one boy to whom he had given a coin as reward for finding his penknife dropped in the walled garden, he made it a point thereafter to periodically drop his penknife on purpose.

There was a medieval manor at the south end of the village, now evidenced by remains of the manorial moat. John Sandale, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Bishop of Winchester, held the manor of Great Coates and was granted Free warren there in 1313; Sandale's grant was 'to his heirs for ever' (et heredes sui imperpetuum). Also granted in 1313 was the right to the manor's 'wreckage of the sea and all animals called waifs, found within the said manor' (wreccam maris et animalia que dicuntur waifes, in manerio suo predicto). In October 1697 antiquary Abraham de la Pryme recorded the moated site in Great Coates as containing a brick built religious house, with "turrits like the old buildings, and somewhat in the walls of the walls of the gaithouse, which seems to have been niches for images, tho' now bricked up". In 1821, the parish of Great Coates comprised 171 residents and 46 houses, in 36 houses and 237 residents.
