It is threatened by fishing and by habitat destruction and degradation, particularly from blast fishing, coral bleaching, and siltation.
The next three albums, Unmasked, Music from "The Elder" and Creatures of the Night, were domestic commercial failures, even as the band maintained popularity in many other parts of the world. Lick It Up was the first album featuring the band without make-up and was certified gold. Their next studio releases (Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, Smashes, Thrashes & Hits) were more successful and Kiss recaptured some of their earlier glory (though not to the level of their 1970s heyday). Hot in the Shade was the lowest charting album of the unmasked era in the US, despite the success of the top 10 power ballad "Forever".

"I Was Made for Lovin' You" was Kiss's first songwriting collaboration with Desmond Child, who would also write songs for the albums Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, Smashes, Thrashes & Hits, and Hot in the Shade. While not as drastic as the 1979 "Radio Single Mix", the length of the song is edited by some eleven seconds down to 4 minutes and 16 seconds. Like the 1979 edit, the beginning measures of the song are reduced from four to two and the harmonizing following the guitar solo is halved. The music video of "I Was Made for Lovin' You" was filmed on June 20, 1979 in the Savannah Civic Center in Savannah, Georgia.

Writing for Pitchfork, Quinn Moreland described the state of the band with this song saying that "if there's still any question about whether or not the 1975 is a rock band, rather than an '80s-indebted pop act, "People" will put that debate to rest." Moreland described the opening riffs in the song as desert rock. Moreland praised Healy's vocal performance "already undeniably one of the best and most elastic vocal performers of his generation, Healy has never sounded so ALIVE: barking, shrieking, and snarling, ripping his vocal cords to shreds as he rhymes 'Obama' with 'marijuana.'" Marissa Lorusso, writing for NPR, said that "People" thrashes with millennial anxiety with regards to climate change and human extinction.

In a 1975 review of In Praise of Learning in New Musical Express, music critic Ian MacDonald described "War" as "a cauldron of boiling sound" that "heaves and thrashes like an octopus caught in a ship's propellor". He said Krause skillfully negotiates the "ragged obstacle course of downbeat mythologising and exploding musique concrete". In another 1975 review, Dave Laing wrote in Let It Rock that Krause's vocals on War have the same "brittle style" that American singer and songwriter Judy Collins used in "Pirate Jenny" and the Marat/Sade. A reviewer at AllMusic described the Moore and Blegvad song as "enormous [in] proportion and power" that would not have succeeded in the hands of the "relatively quiet trio [Slapp Happy]".

"World of Tomorrow", a medium- tempo piece, breaks out into climaxes after each verse, and on the next cut "Can You Give Me A Thrill???", the band switches back into "full throttle" rocking form.
First Avenue Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote of the band: "Babes in Toyland is about as harsh as rock music getsguitarist Kat Bjelland screams and thrashes her guitar to the gut-pounding, throttling beat of bassist Maureen Herman and drummer Lori Barbero... the all-female trio offer no escape from their strongly female-oriented, but not necessarily feminist, rock." Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill said in a 2010 interview: "Babes in Toyland was a band that was hugely important to us and we were like, God if only we could play awesome shows like Babes in Toyland.". The band has been honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue, recognizing performers that have played sold-out shows or have otherwise demonstrated a major contribution to the culture at the iconic venue. Receiving a star "might be the most prestigious public honor an artist can receive in Minneapolis," according to journalist Steve Marsh.
