Callow Hill is a hill near the village of Lower Dinchope between Craven Arms and Ludlow in the English county of Shropshire. On the skyline is a square tower known as Flounders' Folly.

The smaller species eat sea-floor invertebrates such as polychaetes and crustaceans, but the larger righteye flounders, such as H. hippoglossus, which grows up to in length, feed on other fishes and cephalopods, as well. They include many important commercially fished species, including not only the various fish called flounders, but also the European plaice, the halibuts, the lemon sole, the common dab, the Pacific Dover sole, and the flukes. The name of the family is derived from the Greek πλευρά (pleura), meaning "rib" or "side", and νηκτόν (nekton), meaning "swimming".

Juvenile flounders live in shallow waters, estuaries and rivers commonly at low salinity conditions. Flounders become mature when still small, the males when they measure and the females when they measure . Larvae start out consuming planktonic algae and crustaceans, then as they metamorphose they shift to larger prey. Like all flounders, when they are young, starry flounders swim around like normal fish in a vertical position, but soon they begin to tilt to one side as they swim and eventually live lying on the sandy floor. As well as many other changes in body structure, the migration of one of the eyes to the other side of the head is one of the most crucial changes. Other changes include the loss of dark color on the under side.

The right- eyed flounders of family Pleuronectidae typically inhabit colder waters than A. lineatus. Within the Achiridae, the absence of vertical body bars should be sufficient to distinguish A. lineatus from three co-occurring species, the naked sole (Gymnachirus melas) and fringed sole (G. texae). The lined sole is sometimes confused with the hogchoker, (Trinectes maculatus) which is distinguished (at over 15 mm total length) by the latter's total lack of pectoral fin rays.

Andy Flounders (born 13 December 1963) is an English former footballer who played as a forward. Flounders began his career with his local club Hull City and was a regular presence in the side managed by Brian Horton that won promotion to the Third Division in 1983 and to the Second Division in 1985. He joined Scunthorpe United during the 1986–87 season and continued his prolific scoring form, which was maintained when he joined Rochdale in 1991. Loan spells at Rotherham United and Carlisle United and a brief stay at Northampton Town and Guangdong Hongyuan (between March and April 1995) followed before he joined North Ferriby United.

The bay whiff (Citharichthys spilopterus) is part of the family Paralichthyidae.1 This family is known as "left-eye flounders". They are one of the most common flatfish of the Gulf of Mexico. They are benthic ambush predators with the ability to camouflage themselves on or just below the surface.

Flathead are notable for their unusual body shape, which their hunting strategy is based upon. Flathead are dorsally compressed, meaning their body is wide but flattened and very low in height. The American plaice, American sole or long rough dab (Hippoglossoides platessoides) is a North Atlantic flatfish that belongs, along with other right-eyed flounders, to the family Pleuronectidae. In the northwest Atlantic (H. p. platessoides) it ranges from Greenland and Labrador to Rhode Island, and in the northeast Atlantic (H. p. limandoides) it ranges from Murmansk to the English Channel, Ireland and Iceland.

It involves the flounder's vision and hormones. The flounders match the colors of the surface by releasing different pigments to the surface of the skin cells while leaving some of the cells white by sequestering those pigments.

Sclerorhynchus was about long, and looked somewhat like a modern sawfish, having a long snout with tooth-like serrations along the sides. The word is derived from haly (holy) and butte (flat fish), for its popularity on Catholic holy days. Halibut are demersal fish and are highly regarded as a food fish as well as a sport fish.

As flounder mature, they change their habitat depending on their life-stage. Larvae and juveniles <5 cm long tend to favour the warm, shallow waters of mud/sandflats that are heated by the sun. Young flounder that are 5–20 cm long migrate out with the ebb tide and inhabit the slightly deeper inshore channels. Once the flounders reach adulthood, they migrate further out into the deeper and colder coastal waters.

The lack of monitoring population dynamics and over-generalised management practices has caused concerns over the commercial sustainability of this species. Weirs built into inland waterways are another threat to R. leporina. Their purpose is to alter the water flow to reduce flooding, slow down the water's velocity, and raise water levels upstream. Weirs can cause mortalities and intercept flounders migrating from inland waterways, to offshore areas for spawning.

A number of other invertebrates take up occupation in this spoon worm's burrow and live there as commensals. These include the small crab Pinnixa schmitti, the bivalve mollusc Mysella tumida and the polychaete worm Hesperonoe laevis. The Hamgyŏng Province is famous for its gajami-sikhae (fermented flounder). The estuary is a sea bass conservation area. Josh Harkinson of the Houston Press said that farming in Thai Xuan Village "has been as much a hobby as an occupation." Before November 2005, many residents also sold goods from within the village, including homegrown wares sold by women, bún chả, and whole flounders caught by the vendors' relatives, in the parking lot. Rhombosoleidae is a family of flatfish in the order Pleuronectiformes, comprising nine genera and 19 species; all members of this family are right eye flounders with asymmetrical pelvic fins. Species are typically demersal, living on bottoms in temperate marine waters on the continental shelf, although some species of Rhombosolea enter fresh water in New Zealand. Most are restricted to waters around Australia and New Zealand, though the Remo flounder, Oncopterus darwinii, occurs in the southwestern Atlantic and the Indonesian ocellated flounder, Psammodiscus ocellatus, occurs in Indonesia. In some traditional classifications, this group was formerly recognised as a subfamily, Rhombosoleinae, of the Pleuronectidae.

Flounders are benthic feeders, meaning they obtain and consume their food from the seafloor. Juveniles younger than two years old tend to be non-selective with their diet, feeding on mostly small assorted invertebrates and detritus (decomposing plant, animal and other organic matter) at the bottom of shallow mudflats. Their diet consists of mainly amphipods, but they also eat other small crustaceans, annelids, molluscs, and nematodes, which are funnelled into their mouth using their asymmetric jaw. The unusual, twisted shape of the mouth of the sand flounder is due to the movement of the skull and bones as the left eye migrates to the right side of the body. While this slow process is occurring, the sand flounder begins to grow out to the side and flatten, losing its rounded shape. This metamorphism makes swimming as the larval sand flounder was able to difficult and exhausting. The now juvenile sand flounders sink to the bottom and begin swimming as adult flatfish do, by undulating their side fins and for rapid acceleration, use their tail.

The inner surface of each fish slice is dusted with mung bean starch, the filling is placed on it and it is then folded in half and sealed. Barnard Castle School (colloquially Barney School or locally the County School) is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in the market town of Barnard Castle, County Durham, in the North East of England. It is a member of The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC). It was founded in 1883 with funding from a 13th-century endowment of John I de Balliol and the bequest of the local industrialist Benjamin Flounders. Flounders are recreationally and commercially fished throughout New Zealand by using scoop nets or flatfish trawling, allowing large numbers of flounder to be caught at once. There is great concern surrounding the management of New Zealand's flatfish species, as there is a lack of sustainable management practices, enforcement of catch limits, and safe catching methods. Flatfish trawling, the most common method of catching flounder, causes serious disturbance to benthic habitats and can capture non-target species such as marine mammals, seabirds, and other fish. Although R. leporina population numbers are not currently of concern, it is part of eight species of flatfish that are managed as one fish stock.

Unlike other species of terns which forage in the open ocean, the New Zealand fairy tern is not a plunge diver, but instead feeds in the top 5–8 cm of the water; it can capture prey in extremely shallow water such as estuaries and tidal pools. Adult birds have been observed feeding gobies (Favonigobius lentiginosus and F. exquisitus) and flounders (Rhombosolea sp.) to their chicks, and adult diet may include a substantial number of shrimps. Birds were observed foraging in Te Arai Stream, the mouth of which is a popular flocking for post-breeding fairy terns, but appeared to be getting most of their food from elsewhere.

The sluice gates, locally known as Clew Gates, marked the point where the spring-fed stream from Barrow upon Humber known as the Beck, became the Haven. Approximately 50 metres south of the railway line, a small watercourse, also known locally as 'the clew', drained land from east of Ferry Road into the Haven, passing under Ferry Road through a large pipe. Despite the presence of many salt water-flooded claypits, fresh water springs are common in the area. When the tide is suitable, dabs, flounders and eels can be caught in the haven and the flooded claypits contain roach, perch, tench, bream and eels.

The starry flounder (Platichthys stellatus), also known as the grindstone, emery wheel and long-nosed flounder, is a common flatfish found around the margins of the North Pacific. The distinctive features of the starry flounder include the combination of black and white-to-orange bar on the dorsal and anal fins, as well as the skin covered with scales modified into tiny star- shaped plates or tubercles (thus both the common name and species epithet), resulting in a rough feel. The eyed side is black to dark brown, while the lower side is white or cream-colored. Although classed as "righteye flounders," individuals may have their eyes on either the right or left side.

As sand flounders grow they begin utilising external food sources such as seaweed spores and algae, and as they grow further, small shrimp and plankton. The extra nutrients they receive from these new food sources enables them to grow to around one and a half centimetres by the time they are three weeks old. Charlie Thurber (Luke Wilson) is a beleaguered English professor at fictional Grey College (a liberal arts college in Pennsylvania) who competes for tenure against an impressive new hire from Yale, Elaine Grasso (Gretchen Mol). Jay Hadley (David Koechner) is an anthropology professor at Grey who tries to convince Thurber to sabotage Grasso’s career – while being simultaneously obsessed with trying to prove the authenticity of Bigfoot. Thurber's articles are rejected by a series of academic journals and he worries about becoming a victim of the "publish or perish" pressures of professorship. And despite competing for the same job, Thurber and Grasso begin developing a friendship after she flounders as a classroom teacher and asks him for advice.

The thundering rock number "Newsnight" then begins, in which Tony is grilled by Paxman, and, without Campbell's help, completely flounders. Tony is then left alone on stage to tell the audience that all political leaders make mistakes, but attempts to convince them of his much-admired integrity. The appearance of Diana telling Tony that he has let the people down is the final straw, yet, even at the last, he pathetically reprises a desperate version of "Evita Peron" as everyone leaves him alone on stage.

His best-known achievement, ironically, was the building of a folly tower, the eponymous Flounders' Folly in South Shropshire near Craven Arms and prominent on the skyline on Callow Hill, the highest point of famous Wenlock Edge. The folly commands extensive views over the surrounding Stretton Hills, Wenlock Edge, the Long Mynd and Clee Hills and even further afield to the Brecon Beacons, Radnor Hills, Malvern Hills and Black Mountains, Wales. The folly was built to celebrate his attaining 70 years, his threescore years and ten, to commemorate his lifelong endeavours and a life well spent and to celebrate the forthcoming marriage of his daughter Mary and the coming of age of his neighbour and associate in Shropshire, Lord Clive.

In 2001 it was bought by what became The Flounders Folly Trust. With public interest awakened and funding from public and other sources such as The Heritage Lottery Fund forthcoming, a restoration programme was commenced in 2001 and completed by 2005. At its re-opening HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, flew in by a helicopter of the Royal Flight to declare the restoration of the folly complete, and the tower is now open to the public at least once a month. The views from the top encompass the Shropshire Hills AONB, Wenlock Edge, the Long Mynd, both Clee Hills, the Radnorshire / Welsh hills; views south reach as far as Mortimer Forest, the Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and Malvern Hills.

If strictly counting fish species of the Antarctic continental shelf and upper slope, there are more than 220 species and notothenioids dominate, both in number of species (more than 100) and biomass (more than 90%). Southern Ocean snailfish and eelpouts are generally found in deep waters, while the icefish also are common in shallower waters. In addition to the relatively species- rich families, the region is home to a few species from other families: hagfish (Myxinidae), lamprey (Petromyzontidae), skates (Rajidae), pearlfish (Carapidae), morid cods (Moridae), eel cods (Muraenolepididae), gadid cods (Gadidae), horsefish (Congiopodidae), Antarctic sculpins (Bathylutichthyidae), triplefins (Tripterygiidae) and southern flounders (Achiropsettidae). Among fish found south of the Antarctic Convergence, almost 90% of the species are endemic to the region.

With the help of friends and family, Parote and Seangfarng/Ngam eventually marry in Chaingrath; however, the new couple relocate to Bangkok due to problems in the princess' home republic. The soap opera then concludes with the return of the Silamanee to Chaingrath, where Seangfarng/Ngam and Parote have returned to assume the roles of King and Queen of Chaingrath.

The Greenland halibut or Greenland turbot (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) belongs to the family Pleuronectidae (the right-eye flounders), and is the only species of the genus Reinhardtius. It is a predatory fish that mostly ranges at depths between , and is found in the cold northern Atlantic, northern Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. It has a variety of other English vernacular names, including black halibut, blue halibut, lesser halibut, and Newfoundland turbot; while both Newfoundland turbot and Greenland turbot are in common use in North America (sometimes even without the location, just "turbot"), these names are typically not used in Europe, where they can cause easy confusion with the true turbot (Scophthalmus maximus). The Greenland halibut supports important fisheries and it is caught in large quantities.

Females of two species, Ocythoe tuberculata and Haliphron atlanticus, have evolved a true swim bladder.

Leonard Maltin gave the film 1 1/2 out of 4 stars, criticizing the film's lack of characterizations, logic and plot. The film received mixed reviews upon its original release in the US and the UK. Bosley Crowther gave the film an enthusiastic review in The New York Times, calling it "one of the dandiest mystery dramas that has shown here" and "a pip of a murder thriller, ghost story and character play rolled into one," and adding that "the writing and the visual construction are superb, and the performance by top-notch French actors on the highest level of sureness and finesse." Variety was more critical: “Although this has a few hallucinating bits of terror, the film is primarily a creaky- door type of melodrama. Its macabre aspects and lack of sympathy for the characters make this a hybrid which flounders between a blasting look at human infamy and an out-and-out contrived whodunit." The National Board of Review named it among the best foreign films of 1955, and called it "a genuine thriller—a shocking, satisfying chunk of Grand Guignol psychological suspense.

There are a few apocryphal stories, now spun into the local and regional folklore, traditionally known and told locally that it was built so that Mr. Flounders could see his ships coming in and out of the Bristol Channel (or the Mersey)—neither of which are actually visible from the tower—and that when he discovered that he could not do so because of high ground in between he killed himself by jumping off the top of the tower, or conversely descended the tower in a great huff roaring "Take it down!" meaning either the tower or the high ground. Some say he wanted to see his house in Ludlow from the tower — there are no records of him having owned or rented a house in Ludlow, where although he was for very many years a very frequent visitor he preferred to stay at The Angel on Broad Street, or the Blue Boar on Mill Street. There are also no known records of his having ships or interests in Liverpool or Bristol, as he was a man hailing from the north-east of England, near Stockton-on-Tees.
