"What has to be aimed at is not this or > that improvement in material circumstances or physical comfort but an > improvement in personal character," she wrote.
The other three sides are then face trimmed, allowing the magazine or paperback book to be opened. Mass-market paperbacks (pulp paperbacks) are small (16mo size), cheaply made with each sheet fully cut and glued at the spine; these are likely to fall apart or lose sheets after much handling or several years. Trade paperbacks are more sturdily made, with traditional gatherings or sections of bifolios, usually larger, and more expensive. The difference between the two can usually easily be seen by looking for the sections in the top or bottom sides of the book.
The painting shows a milkmaid, a woman who milks cows and makes dairy products like butter and cheese, in a plain room carefully pouring milk into a squat earthenware container on a table. Milkmaids began working solely in the stables before large houses hired them to do housework as well rather than hiring out for more staff. Also on the table in front of the milkmaid are various types of bread. She is a young, sturdily built woman wearing a crisp linen cap, a blue apron and work sleeves pushed up from thick forearms.
Dow was born in Herrington, County Durham, the eldest child of John Dow, a riveter in a shipyard, and his wife Mary Ann. At the time of the 1911 Census, the family was living in the Monkwearmouth area of Sunderland. Described as a "sturdily built defender", he began his senior football career with Sunderland, but never made a first-team appearance in several seasons with the club. In 1930, he was initially placed on the transfer list, but on appeal to the Football League was allowed a free transfer.
It was common British practice for trench knives to be used in combination with other "quiet" weapons, like trench clubs, pickaxe handles and hatchets, during trench raiding expeditions, backed up with revolvers and hand grenades. Many standardized versions were made by government contractors and officially issued. Most had slab wooden grips and metal sheaths and were sturdily made. During the Second World War, the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife was widely issued to forces such as the British Commandos, Royal Marines Commandos, Parachute Regiment, Special Boat Service and the Special Air Service.
South Pond In the historic drawing of the old castle garden, a dry pond, the Oshiro Oniwa Ezu, is depicted with a large boat-shaped stone on the northern shore and an island of rocks in the middle. In an excavation survey, the large boat-shaped stone was not found, but it is believed that the island lies under three rocks that can be seen in the pond. The original pond is believed to have been deep, surrounded by sturdily piled rocks, and exceptionally large in scale, much larger than depicted in the drawing.
Two chimneys still stand and the walls of the two sturdily-built incorporating mills with central waterwheels survive well: they were built with substantial walls but flimsy roofs so that in the event of an explosion, the force of the blast would be directed safely upwards. The ruins of a number of ancillary buildings also survive. A proving mortar—a type of small cannon used to gauge the strength of the gunpowder—used by the factory still lies by the side of the road to the nearby pottery.
Barrett Wendell once described the building as "sturdily honest as the founder who designed it, yet laughing at every turn with freakish gayety and beauty." However, the building's architecture has been criticized, most notably by former Cambridge mayor Alfred Vellucci. He once described it as "one of the ugliest buildings in the world" and claimed that "it does nothing but scare strangers" and "looks like a witch on a broomstick." He also noted that the location of the building "is an ideal spot for a restroom", and once unsuccessfully proposed a city ordinance declaring the building a public urinal.
Soon after the station entered service, the East German international station Stimme der DDR commenced broadcasting on 185 kHz, interfering with reception at longer distances. After several complaints, the East German government moved the station's frequency to decrease interference. On 12 July 1970 the station's central antenna was struck by lightning, cutting off a stay, setting an oil-filled stay insulator on fire, and crushing the base insulator. This caused the central antenna to collapse over the bunker, destroying the antenna but causing little damage to the sturdily-built bunker; only a crack in the ceiling was visible from the inside entrance.
Singer Motor Co was the first motor manufacturer to make a small economy car that was a replica of a large car, showing a small car was a practical proposition.Anne Pimlott Baker, Bullock, William Edward (1877–1968), Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004 It was much more sturdily built than otherwise similar cyclecars. With its four-cylinder ten horsepower engine the Singer Ten was launched at the 1912 Cycle and Motor Cycle Show at Olympia. William Rootes, a Singer apprentice at the time of its development and consummate car-salesman, contracted to buy 50, the entire first year's supply.
Goodwin was born in Worcester. When he was demobbed after the Second World War, Goodwin joined Birmingham City from Southern League club Worcester City. Described as a "sturdily-built ... bustler", he made his debut in the Second Division on 18 September 1946, deputising for Neil Dougall at inside right in an away game against West Bromwich Albion which Birmingham lost 3–0. He played only intermittently while Jock Mulraney remained first choice on the wing, but by the middle of the 1947–48 season had accumulated 31 league games and made his contribution to the club's Second Division title.
According to the Hong Kong population census, there were 47,091 rooftop dwellers in 2011, 48,570 in 2006 and 77,930 in 2001. Many of these squats were to be found in the old Kowloon districts of Sham Shui Po, Kwun Tong, and Tai Kok Tsui. For example, the Hoi On Building in Tai Kok Tsui housed over 100 people living on the roof in shacks. Some were made out of rudimentary materials such as wood, others were constructed more sturdily with brick walls and air-conditioning. The rooftop dwellings, generally built atop tenement buildings from the 1950s and 1960s, typically range from .
Key note speakers included, Rugby journalist Peter Jackson, Wales Rugby League team manager Mike Nicholas, and Simon Foster, son of Frank's teammate Trevor Foster. Simon presented a talk on the 'Indominatables' tour to Australia. A poem composed by the Foster family as a tribute to Whitcombe was read out. Frank Whitcombe – Super prop Who us this man called Whitcombe, This man all forwards fear, A prop who's always dangerous, Whenever he gets near (the try line) The sturdily built Welshman, since moving up t'north, Has proved to be a man of power, A titan moving forth.
291-292 A new design was prepared that was based heavily on the Trento class, but also incorporated improvements from the Zara design. These included the new, longer gun, more powerful boilers, and a stepped up forecastle deck. The high command of the Regia Marina persisted in their belief that speed was more important than armor, and so the new vessel adopted a level of protection similar to the earlier Trentos rather than the more sturdily built Zaras. The sailors of the fleet referred to Bolzano as "un errore splendidamente riuscito--an error beautifully executed" owing to her weak armor protection.
" Erlewine also wrote that the production might be too "clean and snappy" to "obscure how sturdily the songs are constructed". He then stated that those characteristics are "actually a plus" in the album's sound. Billy Dukes of Taste of Country commented that although Cam does not "show tremendous range", she does exhibit "ever lilting word rides on a dozen notes like she’s Dolly Parton." Dukes also described his mixed feelings about the production of Untamed: "At times, the newcomer’s lyrics get lost in the production, but Jeff Bhasker and Tyler Johnson take sweet liberties with the Nashville sound.
That year, "Snapper" Carson of Ketchikan, Alaska, purchased her for US$190,000. He renamed her Crane and used her until 2003 for salmon and herring fishing and packing. During Carson's ownership, Crane collided with an aluminum seiner under tow by another aluminum seiner that cut across her bow on a dark night while Crane was in the waters of British Columbia, heading north from Washington to Southeast Alaska; the sturdily built Crane almost sliced the seiner in half, but herself sustained no damage.Hughes, H., "The Crane: Sturdy as the Stories About Her," Alaska Fisherman′s Journal, May 1982. pp. 60–61.
12; Jackson, p. 119; and "Keswick" Visit Cumbria, retrieved 29 August 2014 The pattern of buildings around the market square remained broadly the same from this period until at least the late 18th century, with houses – originally timber-framed – fronting the square, and sturdily enclosed gardens or yards at the back. According to local tradition these stout walls and the narrow entrances to the yards were for defence against marauding Scots. In the event it appears that the town escaped such attacks, Scottish raiders finding richer and more accessible targets at Carlisle and the fertile Eden Valley, well to the north of Keswick.
A Better Boy tomato is approximately 12 oz. His appearance was misleading, however, as he was sturdily built and brimful with enthusiasm. He made his debut for Southampton on 24 October 1925, when he scored in a 4–0 victory over Swansea Town. He went on to score twice more in the next four games and was forming an understanding with Arthur Dominy on his inside, but his run in the side came to an end on the return of Bill Henderson in December. Over the next season, Coundon only made a handful of appearances, before a run of 14 games in the 1927–28 season after Henderson had broken his arm.
An anti-suicide smock, Ferguson, turtle suit, pickle suit, Bam Bam suit, or suicide gown, is a tear-resistant single-piece outer garment that is generally used to prevent a hospitalized, incarcerated, or otherwise detained individual from forming a noose with the garment to commit suicide. The smock is typically a simple, sturdily quilted, collarless, sleeveless gown with adjustable openings at the shoulders and down the front that are closed with nylon hook-and-loop or similar fasteners. The thickness of the garment makes it impossible to roll or fold the garment so it can be used as a noose. It is not a restraint and provides modesty and warmth while not impeding the mobility of the wearer.
It was and remains a very sturdily built edifice with the main walls of considerable thickness being built of quartzite, quarried locally at Strathlene, capped with a very hard type of sandstone, which was also used to form the walls at the entrance and of the harbour proper. As regards stability the harbour has remained a monument to engineering science with very little maintenance ever being necessary. It had a design fault, however, in that the entrance opened to the north east and was subject to infill with shingle, moving westwards by longshore drift. Later known as Buckpool Harbour, this earlier port became something of an eyesore and eventually the silted basin became overgrown and dangerously swampy.
Erebus (378 tons bm) and Terror (331 tons bm) were sturdily built and well equipped, including with recent inventions. Steam engines were fitted, driving a single screw propeller in each vessel; these engines were converted former locomotives from the London & Croydon Railway. The ships could make on steam power, or travel under wind power to reach higher speeds and/or save fuel. Other advanced technology in the ships included reinforced bows constructed of heavy beams and iron plates, an internal steam heating system for the comfort of the crew in polar conditions, and a system of iron wells that allowed the screw propellers and iron rudders to be withdrawn into the hull to protect them from damage.
Kortlang was a sturdily-built man of middle height, a sound and patient batsman, difficult to dismiss, who could also hit hard and use his strong wrists to pull short balls to the boundary. After playing club cricket in his native Melbourne, he left home at the age of 15 after a disagreement with his father, who had chastised him for playing cricket for his school when he should have been helping at home. He went to Sydney, where he played three seasons for Balmain in the late 1890s. He then left for the Americas, where during his travels he took part in an impromptu game of cricket on the frozen sea during the Klondike Gold Rush.
Although The Atlantics Spencer Kornhaber found it to be a "sturdily crafted" single, he found Gaga to be neglectful of the song's details and claimed that American singer Taylor Swift could excel exceptionally better at the same craft. Billboard ranked "Million Reasons" at number 35 on their "100 Best Pop Songs of 2016" list. Rena Gross from the magazine said that "traffic- stopping vocal delivery perfectly encapsulates our longing for the impossible". Gary Trust from the publication wrote an article titled "With 'Million Reasons,' Is Lady Gaga Bringing Back 'The Vocalist Era'?" where he interviewed radio programmers and theorized that the track "is reminding radio, and fans, of Gaga's talents, beyond her trademark quirky costumes and persona".
It looked as if the Northern Pacific was hard hit when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul built its extension to the Puget Sound right through the Northern Pacific territory, and that the Northern Pacific did feel severely for some time the effects of this new competition, but Mr. Elliott sturdily met the issue, fought a good fight, maintained the road's dividend, and at the same time made large expenditures from earnings for improvements. In spite of the adverse conditions he was able to show a surplus of over $3,000,000 in 1911, and one of over $2,000,000 in 1912. When George J. Gould retired as president of the Missouri Pacific in 1911 Mr. Elliott was offered the presidency of that road, but declined it.
The conical frame for the 1881 tower, consisting of eight inclined iron pillars, holds an elevated, cylindrical utility building pierced at the center by an iron tube that encloses the spiral staircase up to the lantern. Its design resembles many other seacoast towers along the Gulf Coast and Florida Straits (particularly the many offshore lighthouses along the Florida Keys) such as the Alligator Reef Light, American Shoal Light, Ship Shoal Light, Fowey Rocks Light, and Carysfort Reef Light. As at these other light stations, the iron skeleton frame at South Pass is reinforced by a web of many smaller iron braces that sturdily resist the wind from major storms and simultaneously allow the wind to pass through the structure. The massive lantern was sized as such to accommodate the huge first-order lens originally installed there.
" AllMusic's Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted how the record has "space for softer tones and slower tempos" that allow for "experimentation with rhythms" and that Pardi's everyman image can hold him back sometimes, but concluded that "this workingman's diligence is a key element in turning California Sunrise into a frills-free, sturdily crafted collection." Jeffrey B. Remz of Country Standard Time also gave note of the traditional instrumentation and iconography used throughout the album, concluding that "Maybe from Pardi's perch on the music scene, what was old may be new again. Maybe, just maybe, Pardi and his hat are indeed "something new" these days. And while being called a hat act was a pejorative once upon a time, Pardi and his ilk ought to proudly wear that moniker - as long as he remembers what the hat once stood for.
McGuire (2006), 170 That morning, Sir William Howe marched one wing of his army to reach a position in the rear of the American right flank. George Washington immediately ordered the divisions of Stephen, John Sullivan, and Lord Stirling to block Howe.Boatner (1994), 108 Stephen's 1,500 troops held the right, Stirling's 1,500 men defended the center, and Sullivan's soldiers began forming on the left of the position. The Americans were outnumbered by about 8,000 to 4,000 men.McGuire (2006), 197-199 Supported by two cannons, Stephen's division held a wooded hill in an area called Sandy Hollow. At first, the division sturdily held its ground against the British 2nd Light Infantry Battalion and the Hessian Jägers.McGuire (2006), 213-216 The British attack broke Sullivan's division first. Attacked in front and on their newly exposed left flank, Stirling's men withdrew next.
Methodism also experienced decline, and the gradual merger of several sub- groups (Bible Christians, Primitive Methodists, Wesleyans and others) to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain in 1932 reduced the number of chapels needed for worship. In West Sussex, just as in neighbouring counties, it proved popular to convert these buildings – sturdily built, often attractively designed and usually sold cheaply – into houses (as at Somerley, Sidlesham, Fernhurst, Walderton and West Wittering) or for commercial use, as evidenced by the former Bible Christian chapels in both Chichester and Nutbourne. The now-vanished Society of Dependants (also known as Cokelers), a small and obscure sect found in Surrey and Sussex, were based at Loxwood in Chichester district; their old chapel there is still in use by another congregation, but former Cokeler chapels in both Northchapel and Chichester have now fallen out of religious use.
Heavily armed and sturdily constructed fighters such as Germany's Focke-Wulf Fw 190, Britain's Hawker Typhoon and Hawker Tempest, and America's P-40, Corsair, P-47 and P-38 all excelled as fighter-bombers, and since the Second World War ground attack has been an important secondary capability of many fighters. A Northrop P-61 Black Widow of 419th Night Fighter Squadron World War II also saw the first use of airborne radar on fighters. The primary purpose of these radars was to help night fighters locate enemy bombers and fighters. Because of the bulkiness of these radar sets, they could not be carried on conventional single-engined fighters and instead were typically retrofitted to larger heavy fighters or light bombers such as Germany's Messerschmitt Bf 110 and Junkers Ju 88, Britain's Mosquito and Beaufighter, and America's A-20, which then served as night fighters.
Coffey's nineteen- year-old son Clarence was watching from behind and later said his father "was pushed back like he was hit by a high-pressure hose." The boilerplate shield stood up to actual penetration, but the BARs' impact was literally staggering to the sturdily-built sheriff. The flying glass and wood chip debris abraded the officers, but they were able to fall back, miraculously without being hit by any outlaw gunfire. They returned the fire, but even their substantial, .45-caliber Thompson "sub-guns" were no match for the bandits' thundering Browning output: one BAR slug exiting the cabin penetrated the rear wall of the kitchen in the Tavern, passed through both walls of a stove and wound up lodged in Coffey, Jr's arm;Barrow with Philips, p 277n39 others penetrated Tavern walls at both ends of the place, and several ricocheted off the pavement of the Slim's Castle parking lot.
Next, McDaniel moved on to quick-drawing the handgun. Suitable types of handguns were those in which the hammer can be cocked and the gun fired simply by pulling the trigger straight through: double-action revolvers, double-action- only automatics (or "auto-loaders"), and double-action/single-action automatics, which are fired double-action for the first shot, and single- action thereafter, the hammer then being cocked automatically by the cycling of the gun. Single-action revolvers and single-action automatics, which require that the hammer be cocked separately, require different procedures than those that McDaniel used. Most uniformed police officers usually wore a variation of the Jordan holster: sturdily designed, with no leather over the trigger guard or shrouding the hammer, and with a metal shank inside a drop loop to position the holster well below the waist so the gun butt stood away from the body and was angled forward and could easily be drawn in a big hurry when necessary.
Butler's cenotaph at the Congressional Cemetery U. R. Brooks noted that biographical material to write from was scanty, and that Butler's power lay in his own presence with "grand gifts of eloquence, action, pathos, and convincing argument." Ellet wrote > Senator Andrew Pickens Butler was conceded to be the most unique and > original intellect in the Senate. August Petermann The Smith Sound route was not favored by everyone; among those who rejected it was leading cartographer August Petermann, from Gotha in Germany, widely known as the "Sage of Gotha". A firm believer in the Open Polar Sea theory, he believed that the most likely portal would be found by following the Gulf Stream, which swept up the coast of Norway to the unexplored Arctic regions. Peterman thought the current would weaken or even penetrate the protective ice ring, and that a sturdily-built steamer following the course of the stream might thus be able to break through into the supposed polar sea. After two expeditions sponsored by Petermann—the German North Polar Expedition of 1869 led by Carl Koldewey, and the Austro- Hungarian North Pole Expedition of 1872 under Karl Weyprecht and Julius von Payer—had followed separate branches of the Gulf Stream but ultimately failed to break through the ice, Petermann grew dispirited.

After studying from Air Force Bal Bharati School, She finished her graduation from University of Delhi in 2015. She is Squash professional since 2014. He is first met emerging "sturdily" from out of a schaw and immediately described as one of the "fairest" men the narrator has "ever" seen. A two-stanza portrait gives a detailed description of his appearance: > His gowne wes of ane claith als quhyte as milk, > His chymmeris wes of chambelate purpour broun, > His hude of scarlet, bordowrit weill with silk, > On heikillit wyis until his girdill doun, > His bonat round and of the auld fassoun, > His beird wes quhyte, his ene wes grit and gray, > With lokker hair quhilk over his schulderis lay. > > Ane roll of paper in his hand he bair, > Ane swannis pen stikand under his eir, > Ane inkhorne with ane prettie gilt pennair, > Ane bag of silk, all at his belt can beir: > Thus wes he gudelie graithit in his geir, > Of stature large and with ane feirfull face. > Even quhair I lay he come ane sturdie pace, > > And said, 'God speid, my sone... > (Robert Henryson, Morall Fabillis, lines 1347–1363) Other Henrysonian variations from the traditional portrait include identifying Aesop as Roman rather than Greek, and as Christianised rather than pagan.
