The squad also featured former NBA star Richard "Rip" Hamilton. He became a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity while an undergraduate.
The P-12 is a variant of the B-611. The P-12 has a longer strake, and is believed to be lighter than the B-611 and carry a 300 kg HE fragmentation or blast warhead. A pair of the missiles may be carried inside a 6 x 6 wheeled vehicle. The P-12 was first shown at the 2006 China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition.

Bilge keels increase hydrodynamic resistance to rolling, making the ship roll less. Bilge keels are passive stability systems. On commercial shipping the bilge keel is in the form of a strake, or small keel or blister, running along much of the length of the hull. They are typically fitted one on each side, low down on the side of the hull, so as not to increase the draft of the vessel.
Blended into the fuselage and along the wing root, the strake generates a high-speed vortex that remains attached to the top of the wing as the angle of attack increases, generating additional lift and allowing greater angles of attack without stalling. Strakes allow a smaller, lower-aspect-ratio wing, which increases roll rates and directional stability while decreasing weight. The lower strake was backed by a highly subdivided cofferdam intended to reduce flooding from any penetrating hits as its compartments were filled by 14,858 water- resistant "bricks" of dried and compressed Zostera seaweed (). The seaweed was intended to expand upon contact with water and plug any holes. The armoured deck consisted of a mild steel plate laid over two plates. The splinter deck beneath it comprised two layers of plates.
These fins extended above and below the tailplane, with arrow shaped leading edges and straight, swept trailing edges. There was also a long, shallow strake over the rear fuselage. Seen from below, the long span of the tailplane was striking, about 44% of that of the wings; the elevators filled most of the outer part of its trailing edge, avoiding the propeller airstream. Only two Jupiters were built.

In 2013, Regis once again participated in the Academic Rally, this time winning five gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, and nine honorable mentions. The Léon Gambetta-class ships were protected by of armour. It consisted of a waterline armour belt of Harvey armour that was thick amidships and reduced to at the bow and at the stern. The tataya of Batan Island are generally divided into three types: the Basco and Mahato tataya, the Ivana tataya, and the Uyugan tataya. Basco and Mahatao tataya share the same fishing grounds and thus are identical in construction. Older (1960s-1970s) Starcraft fiberglass boats were characterized by their simulated "wood-strake" side hull appearance (excepting the Safari model), one-piece curved windscreens, smooth fiberglass closed-bow tops, 4 place fold-down seating, and having a modest outboard engine capacity ranging from 45 hp up to around 75 hp/80 hp (excepting Newport & Imperial I/O models). The Shōkaku class had a waterline belt that consisted of of Copper-alloy Non-Cemented armor (CNC) that covered most of the length of the ship. The belt was high, of which was below the waterline. The magazines were protected by of New Vickers Non-Cemented (NVNC) armor, sloped at an inclination up to 25° and tapered to thicknesses of .
The vessel is a flat-bottomed boat with a hard chine, pointed bow and a similar stern. The planking is in two layers held together with iron nails and chunnam. Large floors set in recesses carved into the bottom help give the craft some internal strength, but these are set far apart and probably are only secondary to the ship. Deck beams dovetailed into the vessel's chine strake help hold the side of the ship.

This is an early D-model, without the fin strake; 75 gallon (284 litre) drop tanks are on the wing racks. When long-range fighter support became widely available by May 1944, the Luftwaffe's defensive effort was severely damaged. The P-51D Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts with extended range were now able to escort the bombers to and from the target. The Luftwaffe now did not have opportunity to attack the unprotected fleets.

The small Turbomeca Marboré turbojet engine was mounted in the central lower fuselage, fed from wing root inlets and exhausting under the raised rear fuselage just aft of the wing trailing edge. The Centurion-class ships were mostly fitted with compound armour although some portions were made from improved Harvey armour. Alston worked as a ball boy for the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association, grabbing rebounds for players during warmups. Alston attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston, where he played varsity basketball for two years. As a senior, he averaged 14.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, earning first-team All-District 19-6A honors. Suffren had a complete waterline armour belt of Harvey armour that had a maximum thickness of amidships and reduced to at the bow and at the stern. The lower edge of this belt was in thickness amidships and thinned to at the bow and at the stern. The armour plates were high of which was above the waterline and below it. Above this was a strake of special-steel armour that extended from the bow to the aft transverse bulkhead below the aft main-gun turret.

That same year they provided the University of St. Thomas, a small Catholic institution in Houston, with funding to build Strake Hall and Jones Hall, designed by Philip Johnson per their recommendation. The site was scheduled to be used to conduct the testing of a 1,100-ton conventional explosive in an operation known as Divine Strake in June 2006. The bomb is a possible alternative to nuclear bunker busters. After objections from Nevada and Utah's members of Congress, the operation was postponed until 2007; in that year, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) officially canceled the experiment. Another explosion, an underground sub-critical test of the properties of plutonium, was conducted on the site in 2012.
They were to be fitted with 12- and 8-inch guns, each in twin-gun turrets, and equipped with twenty guns for defence against torpedo boats. Through tryouts, boys may be selected to junior varsity and varsity teams. Middle school students also play soccer and basketball, but substitute rugby for baseball. Additional fees, for referees, uniforms, and league fees will be required for each team a student joins. The Knights play in the Southwest conference of the Greater Houston Catholic Sports Association. The Regis Varsity Basketball Team won the 2008 Greater Houston Catholic Athletic Association by defeating the St. Laurence Saints at Strake Jesuit’s gymnasium with a score of 70-68.
Kubiak and his wife, Rhonda, have three sons: Klint, Klay, and Klein. Klint is the quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings as of 2019. From 2005–2009, Klay was a quarterback at Colorado State, and is the head coach of the football team at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston since 2018. Klein played wide receiver for Rice University from 2010–2013 and was the Southwest Area Scout for the Denver Broncos from 2017 to 2018; he is currently an area scout for the Dallas Cowboys.

Hobby polled 1,170,253 votes (74 percent) to Marshall's 379,108 (24 percent) and in their 1978 rematch with Hobby polling 1,434,613 votes (64.91 percent) to Marshall's 760,642 votes (34.42 percent), 1982 defeating Strake with Hobby polling 1,830,870 votes (58.35 percent) to Strake's 1,272,644 votes (40.56 percent), and 1986 defeating David Davidson with Hobby polling 2,032,781 votes (61.37 percent) to Davidson's 1,231,858 votes (37.19 percent).

The armour consisted of three equal-depth strakes, The strakes were tongue-and-grooved together, and each individual plate in a strake was keyed into neighbouring plates.Brown 2006, pp.
Renowns main armour belt was removed and a new 9-inch belt was installed, using up the remaining plates left over from Almirante Cochrane as well as new armour, but installed about higher than on Repulse to offset any increase in draught. A strake of tapered armour was fitted underneath the main belt to deflect any shell that dived beneath the water's surface; it was 9-inches thick at top and thinned to at the bottom. The ship's deck armour was heavily reinforced adjacent to its machinery spaces and magazines.
At the time when Clasper was starting to design racing boats, the standard boat hull was constructed of a number of strakes (or planks), with a keel projecting from bottom of the hull. Together with Matthew Taylor, another Tyneside boat- builder, he worked to reduce the surface area and drag. They did this by placing the keel inside the hull of the boat and constructing the hull with a single strake on each side. The surface would then be given several coats of varnish to give as smooth a finish as possible.
Orion and the destroyer under way, 1918 The Orion class had a waterline belt of Krupp cemented armour that was 12 inches thick between the fore and rear barbettes that was reduced to outside the central armoured citadel, but did not reach the bow or stern. The belt covered the side of the hull from the middle deck to below where the waterline and thinned to at its bottom edge. Above this was a strake of 8-inch armour. The forward oblique bulkheads connected the waterline and upper armour belts to the 'A' barbette.
The ships were also fitted with three 18-inch (450 mm) torpedo tubes, one on each broadside and the third in the stern. The St Vincent-class ships had a waterline belt of Krupp cemented armour (KC) that was thick between the fore and aftmost barbettes, reducing to a thickness of before it reached the ships' ends. Above this was a strake of armour thick. Transverse bulkheads inches thick terminated the thickest parts of the waterline and upper armour belts once they reached the outer portions of the endmost barbettes.

The armour protection given to Lion and Princess Royal was heavier than on the Indefatigables. The waterline belt of Krupp cemented armour measured thick amidships; this thinned to 4 inches towards the ships' ends, and did not reach the bow or stern. The upper armour strake had a maximum thickness of 6 inches over the same length as the thickest part of the waterline armour and thinned to abreast of the end turrets. The gun turrets and barbettes were protected by of armour, except for the turret roofs which used .
Three G.18s were put into service with Fiat's own airline, ALI, early in 1936; the feedback received was that the type was underpowered. Fiat responded the following year with a revised version, the G.18V which had more powerful engines, and a redesigned fin and long dorsal strake. Six of these were delivered to ALI, which operated them on its European routes until the outbreak of war. In June 1940, ALI was brought under control of the Regia Aeronautica (Royal Italian Air Force), and the G.18s were put to use as transports.
Toward the bow, it was reduced to and then to . Aft of the citadel, the belt reduced to to before terminating at another transverse bulkhead that was also 9 cm thick. Behind the main belt was a torpedo bulkhead thick; there was some difficulty mounting the torpedo bulkhead, due to the four wing turrets and their barbettes, which took up considerable space close to the edge of the hull. The casemate battery, located directly above the central portion of the belt, was protected by a strake of armor that was 16 cm thick.

The armour used throughout was Krupp cemented armour unless otherwise noted. Above it was a strake of four-inch armour that covered the area between the turrets up to the upper deck that increased to six inches abreast the wing barbettes.

Divine Strake was the official designation for a large-yield, non-nuclear, high-explosive test that was planned for the Nevada National Security Site, formerly the Nevada Test Site. Following its announcement, the test generated great controversy, centering on two issues: its potential value in developing a nuclear "bunker buster" warhead, and the possibility that the mushroom cloud generated by the explosion could carry large amounts of radioactive dust deposited at the Test Site over years of nuclear testing. On February 22, 2007 the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) officially cancelled the experiment.
The second Brennus was ordered in 1888. Brennus was the first pre- dreadnought-style battleship built in the French Navy; the previous Magenta- class ships were barbette ships, a type of ironclad battleship. The ship introduced several advances for the French fleet: new, 42-caliber guns arranged in turrets forward and aft of the superstructure, the first use of homogeneous steel armor, and the first Belleville boilers. Other changes included the adoption of a thin upper strake of armor to protect against quick-firing guns and the abandonment of the ram bow.
The hull armor extended to a depth of below the waterline and its upper strake was thick while the lower was thick. Her decks were covered by plates and the sides of the conning tower were thick. In service, Rochambeau proved to be very wet and threw up a lot of spray in a head sea. She had a very quick roll which caused problems when trying to work the guns in heavy weather as even moderate seas could prevent their use altogether since the gun ports were only about above the waterline.
The waterline main belt of the Shikishima-class vessels consisted of Harvey armour high, of which was above the waterline at normal load, and had a maximum thickness of for the middle of the ship. It was only thick at the ends of the ship and was surmounted by a six-inch strake of armor that ran between the barbettes for 220 feet. The barbettes were thick, but reduced to at the level of the lower deck. The armour of the barbette hoods had a maximum thickness of while their roofs were three inches thick.
Above the waterline belt was an upper strake of armor that ran between the turret bases, seven and a half feet high. The ends of the upper belt were closed off by five-inch angled transverse bulkheads that connected the ends of the upper belt to the turret support tubes. The armor of the main- gun turrets and their supporting tubes was 10 inches thick (Krupp armor in Poltava, nickel steel in the other two) with roofs thick. The turrets of the secondary armament had 5-inch sides with roofs.
Their armour scheme was virtually identical to that of the KGVs. The waterline belt was intended to be made from Krupp cemented armour (KCA) thick and was long. The main portion of the belt would have been high, but a lower strake, high, extended an additional past the ends of the armoured citadel. It was intended to be tapered vertically from 14.7 inches in thickness to at the bottom edge of the belt, while the plates at the end of the belt would have been only thick at the top.
The ships' main battery turrets sides and faces were thick—reduced slightly compared to earlier ships to account for the heavier belt armour—with thick rears. The turret roofs were 3 in thick. The turrets sat atop 12 in thick barbettes, though Irresistibles barbette armour was reduced in thickness to 10 in behind the belt. Above the main belt was a strake of armour that protected the casemate guns, which was 6 inches thick; behind the casemates, an interior bulkhead that was thick protected the interior of the ship.

The hull of the Admiral Lazarev-class monitors was completely covered by three strakes of wrought iron armor, the upper two were about high and the lower one, below the waterline, was high. The upper two strakes were thick for a length of amidships and the other strake was thick. The armor thinned to aft and forward of the main belt. This outermost layer of armor was backed by 9 inches of teak reinforced with angle irons and then came the inner armor plates, backed in its turn by another 9 inches of teak.
Tim Frazier (born November 1, 1990) is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The point guard played high school basketball for Strake Jesuit College Preparatory and competed at the collegiate level with Penn State. He earned various accolades with Penn State, including first-team All- Big Ten and All-Big Ten Defensive team honors, both as a junior in 2012. Frazier suffered an injury in his fourth year with the team, forcing him to redshirt the season.
She could not be refloated until of weight were removed. To this end, her guns, turret armour, most of her boilers, coal, ammunition and the upper strake of belt armor was disembarked. After several weeks of effort, the ship was refloated on 6 April and she was towed by the and the tugboat Thernomore to a drydock in Sevastopol to repair any damage and to have her equipment reinstalled. This process began on 12 April, but Mirabeau was refloated three days later as news was received of the Red Army's advance on the city.
Hifz-ur Rahman was armed with a battery of two muzzle loading Armstrong guns and two Armstrong guns, each pair mounted in a revolving gun turret, both of which were on the centerline. The 229 mm guns were placed in the forward turret and the turret for the 178 mm guns was located aft of the main mast. Above the main belt, a strake of armor thick protected the turret bases, magazines, and machinery spaces.
Wooden Nordic Folkboat in 2007 The Nordic Folkboat was designed to be constructed of wood with a clinker or lap-strake hull. Oak framing and fir planking were specified, though different builders used many different species of wood. The boat has an open cockpit and a low coachroof covering a small trunk cabin usually consisting of two bunks and minimal lockerage. The boat is rigged as a simple fractional sloop, with minimal standing rigging, consisting only of two lower shrouds, two jumper shrouds, a headstay, and a backstay.
Above the waterline belt was an upper strake of 160-millimeter armor that extended between the fore and aft groups of casemates for the secondary armament. The portions of the barbettes that extended outside the upper armor were protected by plates while the interior surfaces were only thick to save weight. The turrets were protected with an armor thickness of 300 millimeters on their faces, on the sides, and 100 millimeters on the roof. The sides of the conning tower were thick and its roof was also 100 millimeters thick.
Neptune had a waterline belt of Krupp cemented armour that was thick between the fore and aftmost barbettes that reduced to before it reached the ships' ends. It covered the side of the hull from the middle deck down to below the waterline where it thinned to amidships. Above this was a strake of 8-inch armour. The forward oblique bulkheads connected the amidships portion of waterline and upper armour belts once they reached the outer portions of the forward barbette. Similarly the aft bulkhead connected the armour belts to the rearmost barbette, although it was 8 inches thick.
Since the Duncans were intended to serve as fast battleships, White decided to reduce the risk of this kind of damage by discarding the forward transverse bulkhead in favor of a complete belt. The main portion of the belt was thick and extended to just forward of the fore turret, thereafter being gradually reduced to , then , then to , and finally to close to the stem. The aft end of the ship retained the traditional transverse bulkhead, which was also 7 in thick. Abaft of the bulkhead, the hull was protected by a strake of thick side armour.
In order to keep the displacement down and the speed the same as in the earlier armored cruisers, armor in the Tsukuba class was about the same in thickness, although in an improved layout. The waterline armor belt of Krupp cemented armor was thick between the 12-inch gun turrets although it was only thick fore and aft of the turrets. Above it was a strake of armor that extended between the barbettes and protected the 6-inch casemates. The aft ends of the main armor belt were connected to the main gun barbettes by transverse bulkheads.
The first stage in the manufacturing of aluminium boats was to cut out the hull skins and the other sheet metal parts such as the seats using templates under a radial arm router. Sections were then formed by a brake press and swaging, to form the gunwales and hull folds. Stiffening of sheet metal panels was by means of a 3,000 ton rubber press. Extruded gunwale, keel and strake sections of the hull were initially formed in a half-hard condition for ease of working and drop hammering, later being placed in a curing oven to bring them to full- hard condition.
Tynwald in pre- war passenger service, pictured leaving Belfast. Like her sister ship Fenella, Tynwald was intended primarily to be used on the winter service between Liverpool and Douglas. They were virtually identical apart from slight decorative differences, the noticeable external difference being Tynwald had her upper strake painted white, whereas on Fenella it was black. Spacious lounges were a feature of both ships which were furnished to a high standard. On 1 October 1937, the Tynwald conveyed the newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, Vice Admiral Leveson-Gower from Liverpool to Douglas.
The X-29 is described as a three surface aircraft, with canards, forward-swept wings, and aft strake control surfaces, using three- surface longitudinal control. The canards and wings result in reduced trim drag and reduced wave drag, while using the strakes for trim in situations where the center of gravity is off provides less trim drag than relying on the canard to compensate. The configuration, combined with a center of gravity well aft of the aerodynamic center, made the craft inherently unstable. Stability was provided by the computerized flight control system making 40 corrections per second.

The first of two prototypes flew on 22 December 1979,Taylor 1988, p. 56. but testing showed that the Epsilon had poor handling and it was redesigned with a new swept back fin supplemented by a ventral strake and a larger tailplane, while the wing was fitted with elliptical tips increasing the wingspan from 7.40 m (24 ft 3 in) to 7.59 m (24 ft 11 in). The first prototype flew again with these changes on 31 October 1980, and it was soon found that the handling problems had been fixed.Jackson 1987, pp. 9–10.
A 2010 report evaluating data on thyroid cancer incidence from 1973 to 2004 also supports a relationship between exposure from fallout and increased thyroid cancer incidence. The threat of downwind exposure to radioactivity remaining at the Nevada Test Site from nuclear weapons tests was still an issue as late as 2007. The Pentagon planned to test a 700-ton ammonium nitrate-and-fuel oil "bunker buster" weapon. The planned "Divine Strake" test would have raised a large mushroom cloud of contaminated dust that could have blown toward population centers such as Las Vegas, Boise, Salt Lake City, and St. George, Utah.
The scandal revolved around Houston banker and insurance company manager Frank Sharp and his companies, the Sharpstown State Bank and the National Bankers Life Insurance Corporation (NBL). Sharp granted $600,000 in loans from his bank to state officials who would, in turn, purchase stock in National Bankers Life, to be resold later at a huge profit, after Sharp artificially inflated the company's value. One of the victims of the scandal, Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, lost $6,000,000 and a portion of the school's land following the advice of Sharp. The school bought the resold stock at $20–26 a share.
During the 1996-97 school year, and again in 2008 and 2018, St. John Paul II was named a National Blue Ribbon Exemplary School by the U.S. Department of Education. McDougall's design has been likened to a cigar with bent up ends. The sheer strake (uppermost plank of the hull) of a conventional vessel met the horizontal weather deck at a right-angle gunwale; a whaleback hull had a continuous curve above the waterline from the vertical to the horizontal to where the sides met inboard. The bow and stern were nearly identical in shape, both conoid, truncated to end in a relatively small disc. The superstructure atop the hull was in or on round or oval “turrets”, so-named because of their resemblance to gunhouses on contemporary warships.

When the flooding following Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Jesuit High School was inundated, five feet (1.5 m) of water ruining the ground floor. When the school announced that it was closed indefinitely, many students enrolled in schools in cities to which they had evacuated. The largest concentration of students attended a satellite school at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston; at one point, approximately 420 displaced students attended classes at night with their own teachers and classmates. In mid-October, Jesuit opened another satellite school at St. Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie in unincorporated Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, which about 500 students attended until Thanksgiving.

The standard crew of the Spirit of New Zealand has varied during her lifetime, but in 2010 consisted of 1 master, 3 mates, 1 cook, 1 engineer, 2 cadets, 4 volunteer watch assistants, 2 leading hands and 40 trainees.

During the long, bitter weeks of the Iwo-Okinawa operations, the United States fleet suffered more damage than at any other time in its history. , beached and abandoned after being hit by a suicide plane during the Mindoro landings of November 1944, was patched, refloated, and towed to Ulithi for temporary repairs by Piedmont which would permit her return to the United States under her own power. On 20 April made port with a 3-by-5-foot hole in her sheer strake, port side, for repair by Piedmont. , having suffered extensive damage to her port side bridge structure during a collision with a carrier while refueling, came alongside 1 May.
Upon their return they argued for a complete waterline armor belt to preserve the ship's buoyancy and speed if it was hit fore and aft. The original armor scheme was very close to British practice, with a short, very thick waterline belt that covered the machinery and magazines, but left the ends unprotected other than by an armored deck. Their suggestions were incorporated in the ships, but the armor scheme had to be drastically revised to cater for the complete armor belt. The maximum thickness was reduced from to and the belt reduced to at the bow and stern with a strake on the upper side of the ram bow.
The Woodchurch was powered by two medium speed Crossley diesel engines, which were fitted with air brakes for rapid speed change and could be controlled directly from the bridge via the three pairs of connected Chadburn Synchrostep engine order telegraphs. The Woodchurch remained in near constant operation up until 1980 when she was withdrawn from service and laid up in Morpeth Dock for reasons of economy. Up until this period there had been minimal maintenance work carried out on the vessel and at one point she even lost the forward port side rubbing strake. She was put up for sale, but no buyer was found.
Gunwale of the Cutty Sark The gunwale () is the top edge of the hull of a ship or boat. Originally the structure was the "gun wale" on a sailing warship, a horizontal reinforcing band added at and above the level of a gun deck to offset the stresses created by firing artillery. Over time it remained as a valuable stiffener mounted inboard of the sheer strake on commercial and recreational craft. In modern boats, it is the top edge of the hull where there is usually some form of stiffening, often in the form of traditional wooden boat construction members called the "inwale" and "outwale".
An amateur group called Bataviasche Philharmonic Orchestra was established in Dutch colonial times. It became the NIROM orchestra when the radio broadcasting station Nederlandsch-Indische Radio Omroep Maatschappij was born in 1912. Today it is known as Jakarta Symphony Orchestra that has existed in the country's musical world for almost a century through its changing formats to suit prevailing trends and needs. In 1950, a merger of the Cosmopolitan Orchestra under Joel Cleber and the Jakarta Studio Orchestra under Sutedjo and Iskandar appeared as the Djakarta Radio Orchestra under Henkie Strake for classical repertoires, and the Jakarta Studio Orchestra led by Syaiful Bachri specialised in Indonesian pieces.
The keel has been cut to receive the lower edges of the garboards, which had been spiked to it as well as treenailed through the timbers. The starboard garboard strake is now in its place; and this is the only planking we have put on, for the other strakes are somewhat warped. Her outline, however, is perhaps more clearly defined than if she had been planked throughout. It seems to us that after her floor-timbers were laid and planked over, that the other timbers were filled in piece by piece as the planking progressed, which is still a favorite mode of building in some ports of England, and were not jointed together and raised entire before planking.

The main strake of the belt armor extended from the forward boiler room to the aft main battery barbette, and covered a section of the hull from above the waterline and below the line. It was thick at the top, gradually tapering to at the waterline, and reducing further to at the bottom edge of the belt. Forward of the boiler rooms, the belt was reduced to a maximum thickness of , and from the forward barbette, slimmed further to .
Spring Branch ISD appealed the realignment, citing outrage at the loss of a 34-year-long rivalry with Memorial High School, as well as concern that Stratford would have the most travel of any Houston-area school. In the appeal hearing, the UIL ruled that Stratford would be allowed to remain in Class 5A, and the Spartans were assigned to District 18, where they faced the three other SBISD schools (including Memorial), three high schools from Alief ISD, and private school Strake Jesuit. Stratford was later reclassified as a 4A school, but still played Memorial in the annual "Green Out" football game. With the 2014 UIL reclassification and realignment, Stratford became 5A.
With the ships now authorized, the Board selected one of the ten-gun, 20.5-knot variations on 30 March, which had a belt that was increased to 14 in but included a series of tapers at the top and bottom edge to save weight. The Bureau of Ordnance pointed out that the belt could not be manufactured in a single strake with the tapers, so a joint between upper and lower strakes—a design weakness the engineers had been attempting to avoid—would have to be used. The problem was resolved in July, when C&R; proposed removing the 1.5-inch splinter bulkhead in favor of increasing the belt to and incorporating only one taper at the lower edge.
The center of gravity of the charge would have been at least 20 feet below ground level. Some media reports have stated that the purpose of Divine Strake was to test the ability of a conventional explosive to penetrate underground military compounds. However, other reports suggested that this explanation was not credible given the weight, dimensions and emplacement of the charge and that the program was designed to test the effects of a nuclear bunker buster on deeply buried tunnel structures.
