A magnetic stirrer or magnetic mixer is a laboratory device that employs a rotating magnetic field to cause a stir bar (or flea) immersed in a liquid to spin very quickly, thus stirring it. The rotating field may be created either by a rotating magnet or a set of stationary electromagnets, placed beneath the vessel with the liquid. It is used in chemistry and biology where other forms of stirring, such as motorized stirrers and stirring rods, may not be viable for use.

The plastic- coated bar magnet was independently invented in the late 1940s by Edward McLaughlin, of the Torpedo Experimental Establishment (TEE), Greenock, Scotland, who named it the 'flea' because of the way it jumps about if the rotating magnet is driven too fast. The horse wheel was retained for many years, serving as a backup in case the steam engine broke down. The drive gear of the engine, still evident today, was connected to a series of wooden line shafts which drove machinery within the brewery. Connected machinery included rollers to crush malt; an Archimedes' screw, that lifted the crushed malt into a hopper; a hoist, for lifting items into the building; a three-piston pump, for pumping beer; and a stirrer within a vat. There was also a reciprocating pump connected to the engine's beam, used to pump water from a well to a tank on the roof of the brewery.

The Electric President tracks and most of Ben Cooper's projects are recorded in a tool shed in back of his house that he has converted into a recording studio. Electric President's first release was a pseudo-eponymous album (named "Self-Titled" rather than "Electric President") in early 2006. They gained limited mainstream fame after their music was featured on Fox Network's hit show The OC. Dry running protection, also known as dry-run protection or dry-running protection, is a type of protection mechanism to prevent a rotor, pump or stirrer shaft from operating without any medium added, as the bearing and shaft seal might be damaged if the motor is run while dry. Dry-running protection is one of the most important monitoring functions, as bearings and shaft seal may be damaged if the booster pumps run dry. It is thus always recommended to install dry-running protection on all booster sets. With the rising popularity of smoothies, Frappucinos and other frozen drinks prepared in front of the customer, new models of commercial blenders often include a sound-reducing enclosures and computerized controls. Specialized blenders for making smoothies are becoming popular, chiefly resembling an ordinary model with a spigot added for quick serving. Some models also feature a gimballed stirring rod mounted on the lid, constructed so that mixtures can be stirred whilst the machine is running with no chance of the stirrer fouling the blades. Tuisamoa received a Certificate for Community Studies from the University of Auckland in 1977. She was later involved in the Pacific Advisory Committee for the new School of Social Work at the Auckland College of Education, working to ensure it met the needs of Pacific Island students. Through her work, Tuisamoa became involved in networks of like-minded people in Auckland who were trying to help those in need. She worked particularly closely with urban Pacific Island and Māori groups, and political pressure groups campaigning for the rights of the downtrodden. Tuisamoa was one of the few of the older, more cautious, generation of Pacific Island leaders to support the Polynesian Panther movement, a youth-led organisation concerned with the treatment of Pacific Islanders in New Zealand during the 1970s era of ‘dawn raids’ and the deportation of ‘overstayers’. She was regarded as a ‘stirrer’ and likened by some to the Māori women activists of her day, such as Whina Cooper and Eva Rickard.

The mechanisms of energy transfer that define heat include conduction, through direct contact of immobile bodies, or through a wall or barrier that is impermeable to matter; or radiation between separated bodies; or friction due to isochoric mechanical or electrical or magnetic or gravitational work done by the surroundings on the system of interest, such as Joule heating due to an electric current driven through the system of interest by an external system, or through a magnetic stirrer. The vessel combines features of both a wasp nest and a honeycomb, natural forms that Betteridge studied in detail as part of her design process. A tiny, chased and repousséed bee in the recessed lid, and a golden quartz cabochon set in the handle of the stirrer, make droll references to the vessel’s use. This more interpretive phase of Betteridge's work found its most public expression in the late 1970s in two significant exhibitions: "Métiers d’art/3", which traveled to Canadian Cultural Centers throughout Europe in 1978-1979, and "Reflections in Gold and Silver", a major cross-Canada exhibition occasioned by her receiving the 1978 Saidye Bronfman award. In the 1980s, Betteridge undertook a new series of vessels composed of spherical, columnar and conical forms, fabricated in silver sheet combined with brass, copper, plexiglass, and rubber. The influence of Post-Modernism can be read in the juxtaposition of these formal geometric compositions with Betteridge’s characteristic wit, and in the mixing of precious metal with non- precious materials. For example, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, 1988, is a teapot that combines a formal, globular body with base and handle elements of acrylic, silver and brass sheet.
