In blade smithing and tool making the term will usually be changed to a "quench tank" because oil or brine is used to cool the metal. The term slack is believed to derive from the word "slake", as in slaking the heat.

The Alchemy of HappinessThe Alchemy of Happiness is a rewritten version of The Revival of the Religious Sciences. After the existential crisis that caused him to completely re-examine his way of living and his approach to religion, Al-Ghazali put together The Alchemy of Happiness to reassert his fundamental belief that a connection to God was an integral part of the joy of living. The book is divided into four different sections. The first of these is Knowledge of Self, where Al-Ghazali asserts that while food, sex, and other indulgences might slake humans appetites temporarily, they in turn make a human into an animal, and therefore will never give true happiness and fulfillment.

They had two drops (one used jointly with Messrs Brandling in their own right) and a spout; the Stanhope and Tyne Railway Company had eight drops, making altogether ten drops and a spout: an inadequate capacity for the quantity of coal which needed to be shipped from South Shields. A proposed dock of 20 acres was supposed to be constructed at Jarrow Slake, and the Tyne Dock Company obtained an Act of Parliament for the purpose on 1 July 1839, with capital of £150,000. Tenders had been invited for the construction, but the Tyne Dock Company proprietors were mainly shareholders of the Stanhope and Tyne Railway, which at this time was discovering the extent of its financial difficulties, and the dock construction was never started.

In The New 52, the Reach are first introduced when they locate and initiate an attack on Blue Lantern Corps' home world of Odym, intending to allow their HiveMasters to feast upon the Blue Central Power Battery which will "slake their hunger for eons".Green Lantern: New Guardians #9 (May 2012) When the Reach attacked with an overwhelming force of 5 battle fleets, the Blue Lanterns fought valiantly but were overmatched. The other New Guardians, led by Kyle Rayner, (Green Lantern 2814.4) arrived and lent their might to the battle, but discovered that the Reach had cocooned over half the planet during the battle. With Odym lost, the Blue Lanterns continued the fight, but Green Lantern finally convinced Saint Walker, the Blue Lantern leader, to evacuate the remaining Blue Lanterns rather than perish.

The group was founded in Brescia, Italy in 2007. They released their debut EP, Count the Seconds Before Your Last Breath, through Slake-less Heart Records. They also released their debut album, On Your Glory We Build Our Empire, in August 2009. Due to their rapid success and a steadily growing fan base, prompted in part because of concerts with bands like Asking Alexandria, Underoath, Motionless in White, Blessthefall, Pierce the Veil, More Than A Thousand, Adam Kills Eve, Dance Gavin Dance, and In Fear and Faith, the American management company The Artery Foundation (including Chelsea Grin, Whitechapel, Woe, Is Me, Impending Doom, Breathe Carolina) became aware of the band and signed a management contract with them. The group toured several times in Italy between March 7, 2009 to 30 May 2009 and between 29 January 2011 to 28 May 2011.

A major victory occurred on 27 September when an entire brigade of Ottoman, Austrian and German troops, retreating from Mezerib, was virtually wiped out in a battle with Arab forces near the village of Tafas (which the Turks had plundered during their retreat).Murphy, pp. 76–77. This led to the so-called Tafas massacre, in which Lawrence claimed in a letter to his brother to have issued a "no-prisoners" order, maintaining after the war that massacre was in retaliation for the earlier Ottoman massacre of the village of Tafas, and that he had at least 250 German and Austrian POWs together with an uncounted number of Turks lined up to be summarily shot. Lawrence later wrote in The Seven Pillars of Wisdom that "In a madness born of the horror of Tafas we killed and killed, even blowing in the heads of the fallen and of the animals; as though their death and running blood could slake our agony".
