Skelp is a small unincorporated community located in Tyrone Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. It is located on Skelp Mountain Road (Route 1008) at the intersection with Hobbit Hollow Road, at the foot of Mt. Charma, a small section of Brush Mountain. It is located in Sinking Valley, Pennsylvania, and is near Culp, another small unincorporated community. Elk Run flows through Skelp.

In the context of traditional gunsmithing, one way to make gun barrels has been to make them from skelp, like one would make other pipe or tubing. Barrels made from skelp have typically been thought of as having inferior quality. (Pipe made from skelp can be perfectly acceptable in quality, but a gun barrel must withstand much higher pressures than most pipes.) Cheap gun barrels could be made this way in the Damascus method—wrapping the skelp around a mandrel to make spirals which were then hammered and forged into a tube. The mandrel was then removed, the interior reamed, and the exterior filed until a finished tube was complete.

Hopkins has had three stage plays performed. Albatross Soup (co- authored with John Duignan), Citizen Singh (co-authored with Gurmeet Mattu) and Every Bloody Sunday (co-authored with Gurmeet Mattu). Hopkins has also had three satirical novels published, each co-authored with John Duignan: Skelp the AgedPegasus Elliot MacKenzie Publishers in 2016; The Buick Stops HerePegasus Elliot MacKenzie Publishers in 2017; and The Lambshank RedemptionPegasus Elliot MacKenzie Publishers in 2019. Hopkins and Duignan began writing Skelp the Aged as a play, before deciding to make it a novel.

Culp is an unincorporated community located in Tyrone Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. It is located on Kettle Road (Route 1013) at the intersection with Golf Course Road (Route 1015). Culp is less than one mile to the east of historic Fort Roberdeau, and about 2.5 miles southwest of Tytoona Cave. It is located in Sinking Valley, Pennsylvania, and is near Skelp, another small unincorporated community.

Skelp (sometimes spelled scelp) is wrought iron or steel that is rolled or forged into narrow strips and ready to be made into pipe or tubing by being bent (into a cylindrical shape) and welded. The word is most commonly used in the traditional terminology of smithing and in the iron and steel industries. Before the 20th century, the welding was likely to be forge welding. In the 20th and 21st centuries, it has been likelier to be arc welding or gas welding.

Morgan Construction Company has been building high production, continuous, 2-high hot mills since 1888. These mills were designed to produce wire rod, merchant bars, small angles, skelp, sheet, bar, and billets, and were in operation in practically every country where the manufacture of steel has assumed large enough proportions to warrant this type of mill. As the demands for rolled steel products developed, the speeds and loads of the mills increased, and the problem of adequate roll bearings became more and more acute. First introduced in 1932, MORGOIL bearings were welcomed by the rolling mill industry where roll neck bearing problems were hampering the development of faster and more powerful rolling mills.

The Chester Pipe and Tube Company was a company incorporated in 1877 in Chester, Pennsylvania by shipbuilder John Roach for the manufacture of iron pipes and boiler tubes for the steamships built at his Chester shipyard, the Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works.Swann, p. 60. Incorporated for a sum of $300,000, the Chester Pipe and Tube Company was located on of land at the intersection of Front and West Streets in Chester, adjacent to another Roach company, the Chester Rolling Mill, and close to Roach's shipyard. Two large brick buildings and a number of smaller ones were erected onsite, and a workforce of approximately 200 was employed there. By the early 1880s, the company was manufacturing about 18,000 tons of wrought iron pipes annually from 20,000 tons of skelp iron.

In 1880, Roach embarked on a substantial upgrade of the mill's facilities.Tyler, p. 46.Swann, p. 151. A second blast furnace was constructed above the original rolling mill, along with new buildings covering about 1¼ acres, including a new 90 x 140 ft steelworks. The new furnace commenced production on November 1, 1881. In order to pay for the expansion, the firm was recapitalized at $600,000. By this time, the Mill included two puddling mills with 11 furnaces and a total output of 50 tons per day, a mill for boiler and ship plate with a capacity of 45 tons per day, and a mill for angle, beam and skelp iron with a daily capacity of 35 tons. Included in the above were two large gas-operated furnaces and a mill which could produce plates from ⅛ to 6 inch thickness and 27 feet wide.

The portion of the main parcel on the eastern slope of Brush Mountain and the western slope of Canoe Mountain drain into Canoe Creek which runs to the Frankstown Branch Juniata River, and finally, the portion of the main parcel on the east slope of Canoe Mountain drains into tributaries of the Frankstown Branch. All are part of the Juniata River watershed, ultimately the Susquehanna River watershed. Nearby communities include the City of Altoona, the boroughs of Bellwood, and populated places Blairfour, Canoe Creek, Carlim, Culp, Elberta, Etna Furnace, Flowing Spring, Fostoria, Franklin Forge, Ganister, Greenwood, Horrell, Juniata, Mount Etna, Orners Corner, Pinecroft, Pleasant Valley, Point View, Reightown, Riggles Gap, Roots, Shaffersville, Sickles Corner, Skelp, Springfield Junction, Wertz, Yellow Spring. The highway carrying Interstate 99 and U.S. Route 220 runs northeast/southwest to the west of the Game Lands, U.S. Route 22 also, runs northwest/southeast, but to the east, and the highway carrying Pennsylvania Route 45 and Pennsylvania Route 453 runs northwest/southeast to the north of the Game Lands.
