The first novel based on the Dungeons & Dragons game was Quag Keep (1978) by Andre Norton. Based upon Norton's first experience at playing the Dungeons & Dragons game, it told the story of seven gamers who were drawn into a fantasy setting. The sequel, Return to Quag Keep (2006), was published after Norton had died in 2005. A series of authorized novels began in the early 1980s with a survey of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons players.

Norton subsequently wrote Quag Keep, which involved a group of gamers who travel from the real world to Greyhawk. It was the first novel to be set, at least partially, in the Greyhawk setting, and according to Alternative Worlds, the first to be based on D&D.; Quag Keep was excerpted in Issue 12 of The Dragon (February 1978) just prior to the book's release.

In 1959, he was cast as Quag in the episode "Gold Sled" of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series The Alaskans, starring Roger Moore. In the 1960–1961 season, Joslyn guest-starred on Pat O'Brien's ABC sitcom Harrigan and Son. He played one-half of the title role on the 1962 TV sitcom McKeever And The Colonel. That same year, he guest-starred in ABC's crime drama series Target: The Corruptors with Stephen McNally and Robert Harland.

In the summer of 1955, four 12-year-old boys — Petey LaChance (Peter, with Richard Dreyfuss' voice in his head narrating the story), Quag Chambers (Quagmire), Joey Duchamp (Joe with Roy Scheider's voice in his head, who starts talking with Dreyfuss until Joe stops them), and Cleve Brown (Cleveland) — set out to find a dead body in the woods, following a set of railroad tracks to find it. At the start of their trip, they try going through Old Man Pressman's (Stewie) junkyard, only to be chased out by Pressman and his dog Chopper (Brian). As they travel further down the tracks, they are chased across a bridge by a train, which ends up running over Joey's legs, as does another train that follows closely behind, which effectively cripples him. The others end up going all the way back to Pressman's junkyard to get him a wheelchair.
