After the querent has finished their devotions to the main deity, the querent purifies the cylinder by revolving it around the incense burner three times and mixing the sticks by hand. The querent kneels in prayer, holding the cup between their palms and asking their question to the deity, either aloud or by whispering. This part needs to be done decisively as one should not shift questions or hesitate on the question in the middle of the rite.

Eros and agape are two of the various Greek words for love, each of which has a slightly different shade of meaning: agape is descending, oblative love in which one gives of oneself to another; eros is ascending, possessive love which seeks to receive from another; philia is the mutual love between friends. For Benedict, agape purifies eros. The document explains that eros and agape are both inherently good, but that eros risks being downgraded to mere sex if it is not balanced by an element of spiritual Christianity.

The first, in verse, is "The Book of the Seven Degrees" (Das Buch der siben Grade), which comprises 2218 lines, and has only been preserved in one manuscript-that of Heidelberg, transcribed in 1390 by a priest, Ulric Currifex of Eschenbach. In it the author, taking as his starting point the vision of Ezechiel (xl, 22) describes the seven degrees which make the pure soul mount up to the realms of heaven: prayer, penitence, charity, the habitual thought of God, with the devotion, which purifies and which ravishes, union and conformity with God, contemplation of God. The Groundwater Replenishment System takes highly treated wastewater from the Orange County Sanitation District and purifies it using microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet light with hydrogen peroxide. This produces high-quality water that exceeds state and federal drinking water standards. The GWRS has been operational since January 2008 and initially produced up to 70 million gallons of water daily. After the completion of an upgrade in 2015, the plant now produces 100 million gallons per day with an expansion to provide up to 130 million approved on September 21, 2016. In his prayer to Apollo (Iliad, I, 445-457), Chryses, a priest of the god in a Trojan-allied town in the Iliad, washes his hands and lifts his hands prior to requesting fulfillment of his wish. He admits his lower status in relation to the all mighty god, “who set your power about Chryse and Killa the sacrosanct, who are lord in strength over Tenedos” (Iliad, I, 451-3); the gods’ ruling over humanity is accepted. Similar is Achilleus' prayer to Zeus. The great hero holds a ritual, purifies himself, pours wine to his god, addresses Zeus in words of commendation and admits the nobler nature of the divinity through contrasting the father of gods with the unpurified humans of “unwashed feet”. Glaukos, co-leader of the Lycian forces, (XVI, 533) prays on the battlefield requesting healing of his wounds to “fight for Sarpedon”.

Rishi Vashishta (Rig Veda IX.67.21) asks the Great Purifier (पवमान) to destroy for all times (विजहि) all obstacles that are near and far, and all fears that are within us. Rishi Medhatithi (Rig Veda I.15.11) tells us that the intelligent and learned persons must know the Sun shining on its own and the Moon shining brightly in the light of the Sun, both associated with light, and with Agni which purifies and partakes the oblations offered to it. Prasna Upanishad (I.7) explains that Agni which in its material form is identified with the gross self is the Taijasa when in meditation the mind settles inwards, projects impressions and remaining unconnected with the senses is not conscious of the gross body, it then becomes identified as Vaishvanara, the subtle self identified with the mind, the subtle instrument which shines as well as reflects.

It served as technology demonstration of the GameFilm, a then-newly developed in-house interactive movie format conceived by former Atari Corp. employee David Schwartz during his time at the company. Set in Montevideo, Uruguay in the year 1996, players assume the role of CIA agent Jack Armstrong tasked with stopping the terrorist organization World White Order before their chemical weapon is released into the world and "purifies" all of humanity. The players interact with the demo by performing actions highlighted with text messages appearing at the bottom of the screen, along with a subliminal voice in the background that queues to their possible decisions which can affect the narrative such as the getting the main character killed, and certain actions may lead to alternative scenes and endings.

The word mikveh makes use of the same root letters in Hebrew as the word for "hope" and this has served as the basis for homiletical comparison of the two concepts in both biblical and rabbinic literature. For instance, in the Book of Jeremiah, the word mikveh is used in the sense of "hope", but at the same time also associated with "living water": In the Mishnah, following on from a discussion about Yom Kippur, immersion in a Mikveh is compared by Rabbi Akiva with the relationship between God and Israel. Akiva refers to the description of God in the Book of Jeremiah as the "Mikveh of Israel", and suggests that "just as a mikveh purifies the contaminated, so does the Holy One, blessed is he, purify Israel". A different allegory is used by many Jews adhering to a belief in resurrection as one of the Thirteen Principles of Faith.

In the chapter of azan (call for prayer) the author discusses the reason for calling azan in one ear and iqama in the other of the newly born baby. After recounting three reasons: a) the first voice leaves a permanent impression on the mind of the infant; b) the call for prayer belongs to the distinctive features of Islam, therefore the child of a Muslim must be acquainted with it right from birth; c) Satan has a horror of the azan and along with him also the Jinnis ran away, he surprisingly also mentions that the infant is immunised through azan against infant mortality. Unconvincing is likewise his discussion about zakat (wealth tax) on camels, which is levied on five camels, whereas any number of horses, asses and mules are exempted from it. He argues that they are devilish animals and the act of paying zakat purifies them.

The water in a sense purifies the tribe, exposing how corrupt the men have been, as well as revealing more about the history of the tribe. The fact that Thomas cries as well when the ocean returns is a reference to water, since he at the moment promises to return his medals in Washington, an act of revealing the truth. The ocean also is the home to myriads of sea creatures, of which the people of the tribe revere. The sea represents life to the tribe, so much so to Thomas at the end of the novel that when he is killed, his spirit essentially becomes part of the water, as people of the tribe “saw him moving above water, dead, as if it was his soul, carried straight out to sea.” # The passing of time does not have any boundaries; we still contain the same roots inside us regardless of what we experience.

A celebrant who is to say two Masses in the same church uses the same chalice for both, not purifying it at the first Mass. If the second Mass is to be said in a different church, the celebrant immediately after the last Gospel of the first Mass returns to the centre of the altar, consumes whatever drops of the Precious Blood may still remain in the chalice, and then purifies the chalice into a glass on the altar, is consumed together with the second ablution of a subsequent Mass, or emptied into the sacrarium. It might even be given to a lay person who is in the state of grace and fasting, as is done with the water in which the priest's fingers are cleansed, when Holy Communion is given to the sick. The chalice thus purified at the end of the first Mass may be used for the second Mass or not, as the celebrant may see fit.

This teaching appealed to the followers of Peshischa, who were an elite and highly educated group of young Hasidim who were willing to sacrifice their material well-being as well as their inner peace in the name of self-cleansing. The Yehudi believed that one of the main paths to self-cleansing was the parring of traditional Talmudic learning with the deeply spiritual Kavanah of Hasidism. Unlike his Hasidic contemporaries, the Yehudi believed that Learning Talmud became central to the worship of God stating that "learning Talmud and Tosafot purifies the mind and makes one ready for praying" Ultimately the Yehudi believed that critical search for truth was crucial to enlightenment, and that process of enlightenment could only be done by an individual rather than through a rebbe. After his death in 1813, the Yehudi was succeeded by his main disciple Simcha Bunim of Peshischa who brought the movement its highest point and kickstarted a counter-revolutionary movement that challenged the Hasidic norm.

The third Kōju served under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the fourth under Tokugawa Ieyasu. The eighth Kōju Takae Jyuemon was known as a particular master of incense of note. During this time the “Ten Virtues of Kō” (香の十徳, kōnojūtoku) were formulated, which is a traditional listing of the benefits derived from the proper and correct use of quality incense: # 感格鬼神 : Sharpens the senses # 清浄心身 : Purifies the body and the spirit # 能払汚穢 : Eliminates pollutants # 能覚睡眠 : Awakens the spirit # 静中成友 : Heals loneliness # 塵裏愉閑 : Calms in turbulent times # 多而不厭 : Is not unpleasant, even in abundance # 募而知足 : Even in small amounts is sufficient # 久蔵不朽 : Does not break down after a very long time # 常用無障 : A common use is not harmful Even today, there is a strong relationship and holistic approach in kōdō between fragrant scent, the senses, the human spirit, and nature. The spirituality and refined concentration that is central to kōdō places it on the same level as kadō and chadō.

On the summit of that mountain is Lake Urvis, "the Turmoil", into which the waters flow, becoming quite purified and exiting through another golden channel. Through that channel, which is at the height of a thousand men, one portion of the great spring Aredvi Sura Anahita drizzles in moisture upon the whole earth, where it dispels the dryness of the air and all the creatures of Mazda acquire health from it. Another portion runs down to Vourukasha, the great sea upon which the earth rests, and from which it flows to the seas and oceans of the world and purifies them. In the Bundahishn, the two halves of the name "Ardwisur Anahid" are occasionally treated independently of one another, that is, with Ardwisur as the representative of waters, and Anahid identified with the planet Venus: The water of the all lakes and seas have their origin with Ardwisur (10.2, 10.5), and in contrast, in a section dealing with the creation of the stars and planets (5.4), the Bundahishn speaks of 'Anahid i Abaxtari', that is, the planet Venus.. In yet other chapters, the text equates the two, as in "Ardwisur who is Anahid, the father and mother of the Waters" (3.17).
