The song originally appeared on the compilation Less Than Angels. In the liner notes, "Penetralia II" is listed as being taken from a limited 7" on the Shock label. However the reference is actually to the Wrong Eye/Scope single, so "Penetralia II" is otherwise unreleased. "Sicktone" was originally released on the compilation The Fight Is On. "How to Destroy Angels" is from the 12" How to Destroy Angels, except it is presented in mono whereas the original was in stereo.

John Balance and Peter Christopherson are credited for participating on all tracks. Boyd Rice is credited for participating on tracks 1 through 4. Stephen Thrower is credited for participating on track 10. Of the thirteen tracks on the album only "S is for Sleep" (described by Balance as a song about illness) and "Penetralia II" (an alternate mix to a Horse Rotorvator piece) have prominent vocals; "Homage to Sewage", however, uses a heavily manipulated sample of Pier Paolo Pasolini's Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma.

This is the first of two studio albums with vocalist Masse Broberg, who would later be dismissed as vocalist, with guitarist Peter Tägtgren assuming the position instead. Hypocrisy's lyrics do not focus on the paranormal and science fiction as would be the case in later albums, instead focussing on more "traditional" death metal themes such as Satanism and anti- Christianity. Two music videos would be made for tracks from the record: Impotent God and Left to Rot.

Simultaneously, Espenæs met guitarist Christian Hector and together founded Midnattsol. They intended to start working on a new project once they found like-minded musicians to join their band. The other members of the first Midnattsol lineup were three of Hector's former bandmates in Penetralia, a gothic/black metal band from Mosbach, disbanded in 2001: drummer Chris Merzinsky, keyboardist Daniel Fischer and guitarist Daniel Droste (who replaced Christian Fütterer in 2003), while the bassist Birgit Öllbrunner (ex- Commander) was added slightly later. With this formation, the band recorded a demo financed by themselves in 2003 (self-titled Midnattsol, containing two original songs) and got a record contract with Napalm Records in 2004, with which they released all their albums to date.

The glories of the sky adverted to the Book of Job include a sidereal landscape vaguely described as "the chambers [i.e. penetralia] of the south". The phrase, according to Schiaparelli, refers to some assemblage of brilliant stars, rising 20 degrees at most above the southern horizon in Palestine about the year 750 B.C. (assumed as the date of the Patriarch Job), and, taking account of the changes due to precession, he points out the stellar pageant formed by the Ship, the Cross, and the Centaur meets the required conditions. Sirius, although at the date in question it culminated at an altitude of 41 degrees, may possibly have been thought of as belonging to the "chambers of the south"; otherwise, this splendid object would appear to be ignored in the Bible.
