Pfaster takes Orison's car and runs him over. Meanwhile, Scully keeps hearing the Dennis Edwards song "Don't Look Any Further" everywhere she goes, soon believing it is a sign. The agents find and question Orison, who is himself an ex-convict and claims that he is doing the work of God.

In the woods, Orison digs a grave for Pfaster, who morphs into a demonic beast and kills him, burying him in his own shallow grave. Cushman Tavern is an historic tavern (now a private residence) at Maine State Route 9 and Webster Corner Road in Sabattus and Lisbon, Maine. Rick Millikan, the show's casting director, eventually settled on Scott Wilson for the role of Orison believing that he could pull off the "dual nature" of the character better than anyone else. The episode featured several scenes making use of complex effects, most notably the shot at the beginning, where time grinds to a halt. Bowman used several different takes, all filmed at different speeds and then combined in post-production, to achieve the right effect.

Hatfield was born in Blackberry, Pike County, Kentucky, the tenth of twelve children (of whom nine survived infancy) of Jacob Hatfield (c. 1843/45 – 1923), a tenant farmer, and his wife Rebecca Crabtree (b. circa 1856). "Blood Relatives" is the first of two episodes of Millennium to be directed by James Charleston, who would return later in the first season to helm "Wide Open". The episode also marks the first writing credit in the series for Chip Johannessen, who would go on to write an additional twelve episodes across all three seasons, including the series' final episode "Goodbye to All That". After Millennium cancellation, Johannessen would also contribute an episode to its sister show The X-Files, 1999's "Orison". "Blood Relatives" featured the second of three appearances by Brian Markinson as Seattle police detective Teeple; Markinson had previously played the character in "The Judge", and would reprise the role in "Sacrament".

Zachry's people worship a goddess called Sonmi and recall a 'Fall' in which the civilized peoples of Earth — known as the 'Old Uns' — were destroyed, and left the survivors to primitivism. Big Island is occasionally visited and studied by a technologically sophisticated people known as the Prescients, whereof a woman called Meronym, who has come to learn their ways, is assigned to live with Zachry's family. Zachry becomes suspicious of her, believing that her people are gaining trust before doing harm, and sneaks into her room, where he finds an 'orison': an egg-shaped device for recording and holographic videoconferencing. Later, Zachry's sister Catkin is poisoned by a scorpion fish, and he persuades Meronym to break her people's rules and give him medicine.

Sinclair followed this with Edge of the Orison in 2005, a psychogeographical reconstruction of the poet John Clare's walk from Dr Matthew Allen's private lunatic asylum, at Fairmead House, High Beach, in the centre of Epping Forest in Essex, to his home in Helpston, near Peterborough. Sinclair also writes about Claybury Asylum, another psychiatric hospital in Essex, in Rodinsky's Room, a collaboration with the artist Rachel Lichtenstein. Samuel Smiles (8116935276) Self-Help has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism",M. J. Cohen and John Major (eds.), History in Quotations (London: Cassell, 2004), p. 611. and it raised Smiles to celebrity status almost overnight. The Liberal MP J. A.
