It started in the pub, as all the best research does: Media studies professors Renee Middlemost (University of Wollongong) and Sarah Thomas (University of Liverpool) found themselves wondering where all the stars had gone.

Livingston Middlemost (1 April 1839 - 28 October 1897) was an English first- class cricketer. Middlemost was born at Westoe, South Shields. He made his debut in first-class cricket for the North against Surrey at Salford in 1860. Batting once in the match, Middlemost was dismissed for 4 runs in the North's first-innings by H. H. Stephenson.

The Boldon Book of 1183 records Medomsley as Medomesley. The Vita S Godrici, written in 1190, records it as Madmeslei. The placename is derived from Old English and may mean the “middlemost clearing” or “Maethhelm’s clearing”.

Colonel Charles Ainsworth (25 February 1874 – 10 April 1956) was a British businessman and Conservative politician. He was born at Ingol, near Preston, Lancashire. Following a private education, he entered the family textile business of Charles Ainsworth and Company Limited, of which he eventually became chairman and managing director. He married Clara Middlemost in 1902, and they had three children.

After living in London for some time they returned to Australia in 1959 and then to Melbourne in 1960. Here he collaborated with producer Stephen Haag, designing sets and costumes for opera and theatre. The Victorian Art Centre, Melbourne, has a large collection of his portraits of musicians, and set and costume designs. In his paintings, printsMono Uno Thomas A. Middlemost Charles Sturt University 2009 and drawings Louis Kahan explored many interests and themes, including dreams, death, and his own life.

An ox was on display, and the villagers were invited to guess the animal's weight after it was slaughtered and dressed. Nearly 800 participated, and Galton was able to study their individual entries after the event. Galton stated that "the middlemost estimate expresses the vox populi, every other estimate being condemned as too low or too high by a majority of the voters", and reported this value (the median, in terminology he himself had introduced, but chose not to use on this occasion) as 1,207 pounds. To his surprise, this was within 0.8% of the weight measured by the judges.

This, and the opening of the railway line connecting Sundsvall–Östersund–Trondheim (the Central and Meråker Lines) a year later strengthened the plans for a defensive line in the middlemost provinces of Norrland. At the same time, on the other side of the Bothnian Gulf, the Finnish main railway to Oulu had almost been completed, and would soon be of great use for the Russians to transport military personnel and supplies towards the Swedish border in case of war.In reality, the Russians were as worried about the extension of the Finnish main railway line as the Swedes. When the Finns wanted to extend the railway even further, up to Tornio right at the Swedish border, the Ministry of War of the Russian Empire protested as this did not suit the defensive plans for Finland where most troops were stationed in the southern parts of the Grand Duchy.
