When pressed into action, Alita turns out to be an extraordinary fighter, skills she's given ample opportunity to show off, both on the mean streets of this strange, brutal world -- devoid of guns, but populated by bounty hunters known as "Hunter-Warriors" -- and playing a Rollerball-like game called Motorball, where mangling the competition falls within the rules.

When the Facebook pages have aged enough to look real and the target psychic is in a town where some of Gerbic's crew lives, she will call upon others of her SWAT team to leave their screens, don undercover identities of these Facebook sock puppets and head out into the mean streets of the corporeal sphere.

One of the shows, "Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography," which comes from the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington is a generously annotated survey of Latino street photography dating from the late 1950s through the 1970s, during years when El Museo was being conceived and established, and the connection of the show to East Harlem is clear.

It also plays out in story strands that are well performed and produced — "Vinyl" is definitely HBO luxury goods — but not very compelling or fresh: the tension between Richie and his wife (Olivia Wilde), a former photographer and Warhol factory girl now stuck in the Connecticut house; the tension between Richie and his father (David Proval, a star of "Mean Streets"), a horn player who represents the jazz and blues roots Richie abandoned to peddle meretricious pop.

Kundun seems about as far removed as you can get from a "Martin Scorsese Picture," but it carries on key thematic and philosophical concerns from his entire filmography: the importance of ritual (the thread that ties "typical" Scorsese movies like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver to outliers like Age of Innocence), the notion of religious leaders as both fully divine and fully human, seeing such leaders not only as figureheads but as reflections ("like the moon on water; when you see me, and I try to be a good man, you see yourself").

Instead of "Mean Streets" — or "The Wolf of Wall Street" or "After Hours" or "Raging Bull" or "The Age of Innocence" — we picked Mr. Scorsese's "New York, New York" (1977), starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro as star-crossed musicians making their way through the city's show-business demimonde in the years after World War II. The nostalgia of Mr. Scorsese's vision of that era in the city is edged with cynicism, but his tribute to the creativity of the moment is as heartfelt and exuberant as "On the Town," Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's 1949 musical.
