Shitamachi speakers are also supposedly less apt to use the elaborate word forms more characteristic of Yamanote Japanese. Yamanote kotoba and Shitamachi kotoba together form the so-called which, because of its influences from Western Japan, is a linguistic island within the Kantō region.

Bickerton proposed in 1976 an empirical test of his theory, which involved putting families speaking mutually unintelligible languages on a previously uninhabited island for three years. The Sele and 'Ofanto allow access to both sides: the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian. Dialect idiom (true linguistic island in the neighborhood) we find the root of many words with the Oscan of Greek origin. Oral tradition says that the city was built by the Romans under the name "Candida Latinorum" (remains of Roman aqueduct). Some scholars believe the name is given by the white color of the hill.

According to some ethnic Macedonian linguists Drenovë and Boboshticë were the only villages in which the Korča dialect of the Macedonian language was still spoken (as of 1991).

Due to this isolation, the Germans managed to create a "linguistic island", in which German was the main language, and not Portuguese. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were hundreds of thousands of second- and third-generation German-Brazilians who could barely speak Portuguese. This differentiation favored the feeling of a minority group, which allied itself with the formation of solid ethnic institutions, such as schools, churches, social associations and a German- language press. All of these elements combined promoted a general feeling of "cultural group".

Canzo has been chosen as the only linguistic tracing point of a very large area, including not only the entire macro-Brianza, but also the entire provinces of Como and Milan (except for the Bustocco-Legnanese linguistic island). Indeed, Canzo has characteristics of conservation and authenticity otherwise absent in this geographic area, historically much innovative. For this reason it can be said that Canzés dialect – while preserving, in some of its registers, peculiar local features – is the reference variety for a study of the most archaic elements of the most prestigious variant of the Lombard language (see Milanese dialect).

Haparanda Hotel (left) and City Hall (right) When Sweden ceded Finland to Russia in 1809, the Finnish–Swedish border was drawn along the Rivers Tornio and Muonio. The town of Tornio, located on the island Suensaari in the river delta became part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire as demanded by czar Alexander I. (Finland declared independence in 1917). At that time the town of Tornio was dominated by Swedish-speaking merchants and craftsmen, forming a linguistic island in a Finnish-speaking countryside. After the war many of the Swedes started to develop the small village Haaparanta across the border instead (Haparanda and Tornio are within walking distance), eventually leaving Tornio unilingually Finnish.

Statue of Blessed Giuliana Puricelli, patron of the association, restored by La Famiglia Bustocca The idea to create an association with the scope to preserve the traditions and spread the culture of the city of Busto Arsizio, born in 1950 by a group of six citizens with a passion for the History and the culture of Busto Arsizio. The purpose was also to keep alive the Bustocco dialect which has the advantage of clearly distinct from those of neighboring towns, such as to constitute a linguistic island in itself. Founder members who on 13 March 1951 gave birth to the association were Luigi Bellotti, Angelo Bottigelli, Enrico Crespi, Bruno Grampa, Nino Miglierina and Raffaele Montoli. The Statute was approved by Member Assembly on 22 April 1952.
