While their earlier material was raw-edged and hulking, "One More Time" and the rest of its parent album Discovery saw them mine a kitschy retro-futuristic sonic aesthetic that had one foot in the incredibly French electronica of Didier Marouani and Space, and the other in sample-heavy deep house melodicism.
And while Field Music's fourth studio album—with its lush strings and woodwind skipping into jaunty electronic drums and almost kitschy horns—is as direct a response to that cataclysm as you'll find in art-pop (or anywhere), it is compelling because it doesn't pretend to know precisely what the hell happened.
And it can be harnessed to breathe new life into existing institutions, such as the kitschy old-timey-signage enveloping Di Fara's pizza stall at the N3 Food Hall in Williamsburg (new, but made to look like the exterior of the Midwood original, which underwent a temporary closure last year for non-payment of taxes).
Mr Qiu's map makes you think of Grayson Perry's maps, Xu Tan's kitschy interiors of Tracey Emin, Huang Yong Ping's broken aeroplane of the Algerian Adel Abdessemed and Cao Fei's sizzling coloured metropolises of the work of Bodys Isek Kingelez from Congo, which was shown to such great effect in Paris earlier this year.
There is Whiteheadian weirdness — hints of strange eugenics experiments; Friday night lynchings staged like vaudeville shows; and a kitschy "living history" museum, where Cora re-enacts a sugarcoated version of plantation life — but it creeps in slowly, with a subtlety that may send some readers to Google to check their memories of high school history.
Gibson, she tells me, is careful not to use clothing that has actually been used in Native American ceremonies; rather, he only alludes to their persuasive powers (such as the legendary spiritual power of the Lakota tribes's ghost shirts, which were imagined to be bulletproof) and relies on kitschy diasporic glam to complete the work.
There's no strict system linking her covers of Der Spiegel, which blare about terrorists and the oil crisis, to the kitschy postcards of snow-topped mountains and Dresden's destroyed landmarks; or to the World War I maps with old-style Gothic lettering; or to the reproductions of Pop Art by Warhol, Rauschenberg and Richard Hamilton.
Certainly, it was more effective than the proposal at Rochas, where Alessandro Dell'Acqua seems to be stuck in a rut of 1940s pastels, kitschy logos (this time in the form of rhinestone "R"s on sweaters, belts and shoes) and zebra striping — which is to say, bits from this decade, and bits from that decade.
I wouldn't dare spoil the plot twist for you, because that's part of the fun, but what follows is wildly entertaining madcap mayhem involving mistaken identity, amnesia, a pair of stolen gold Egyptian earrings, and an off-camera murder capped off by an utterly insane act involving doves on the stage of a kitschy magic club.
Max Hooper Schneider at High Art Like entering a mad scientist's lab with a predilection for heavy metal and those kitschy plasma globes you would find at Spencer's in the early 2000s, artist Max Hooper Schneider's booth via High Art was undeniably one of the most unique booths in the entire fair in terms of materials alone.
And on the women's front, for fall 2016, Ashley Williams transformed the traditional hall patrol piece, adding her own "pierced ears" slogan for a dose of Debbie Harry-cool; deer-clad iterations of the embroidered patch injected a kitschy touch to denim jackets at Miu Miu; and Supreme's Playboy bunny pin became every Insta-kid's prestige purchase.
In this inactive state, the queer exuberance of the tunic had quieted, but it was easier to see how Gibson's chosen materials — electric blue nylon fringe, digitally printed polyester, vintage Seminole patchwork, metal jingles — fuse traditional artistry with an effusively kitschy kind of craft experimentation that happily confuses the garment's classification as ceremonial or celebratory dress.
"On one of our shoots we were joking that it was like a remake of the movie 'Bad Girls,'" said Katherine Kleveland, referring to a kitschy 1994 Western starring Drew Barrymore and Andie MacDowell (even at 60 perhaps the archetypical prairie girl and whose actress daughters were early Batsheva adopters) in tight-buttoned bodices and lace-trimmed sweetheart necklines.
As attendees nursed complimentary cocktails with kitschy names like "The Late Checkout" and "Property Management Punch," Guesty CEO and cofounder Amiad Soto kicked off the event by touting Guesty's recent investments in the New York market, and spoke at length about why he believed everyone should get in on the hot market before it gets even hotter.
Along with neighborhoods of midcentury modern homes, Craftsman Bungalows and ornate Victorians, there's the birthplace of Tower Records (the Art Deco Tower Theatre and its kitschy, colorful Tower Cafe are both still operating) and the Crocker Art Museum's bright white, modernist expansion, the 125,000-square-foot Teel Family Pavilion, which tripled the museum's size in 2010.
Immediately, it reminded me of the best memories of him — birthday fishing trips, playing with his model trains, learning to make animal balloons (he was a Shriner clown), and my brother and I lounging in his hammock by the shore of Lake Murray, S.C. Kitschy as it sounds, restoring his T-Bird gave me a new sense of purpose.
At Poco Loco, a favorite with the young, adrenaline-seeking crowd, place your order at the bar (in English, if you like; there's a good chance your waiter hails from Britain) then head to the small seating area upstairs to find a spot among the kitschy diner posters, Christmas lights and empty soda cans that adorn the walls.
Paradoxically strong and durable despite its lightness, papier-mâché became an industry; by the mid-21984s, at least 30 English manufacturers were making decorative and useful objects and furniture from it, including tables, chairs and canopy bed frames, though the pieces eventually became too kitschy for even the embellishment-mad Victorians and fell out of fashion.
The curator of the show, Tomoko Sato, of the Mucha Foundation in Prague, gives that spectral spiritual aspect of his oeuvre (a mystical sensibility that Mucha shared with fellow Bohemian in Paris František Kupka) equal weight, while happily underemphasizing his later work — notable for being bombastic and kitschy and nationalistic  — as these paintings, The Slav Epic series, are not in the show.
Directed by veteran Doctor Who director Douglas Mackinnon, it's a funny, warm treat that fans of the book will find familiar and endearing, from the strong ensemble cast — Michael Sheen in particular shines as the fusty, fastidious angel — to the slightly kitschy production design, which flits between a litany of pleasantly clichéd English aesthetics, from P.G. Wodehouse to Harry Potter.
" (A 2008 edition originally listed for $180,000 sold out.) Mr. Smeets imagines that the table might even be bought by such a magnate, oblivious to its critical edge but entranced by its price tag and the sheer splash it makes in a living room, "and then he might put that 'Robber Baron' piece next to a very kitschy patinated bronze panther.
After this vacation, I only have two unforgivable oversights on the Boston Bucket List: I have yet to catch a game at Fenway, and I have never visited Salem (which I've been told is way less kitschy than I imagined, since I basically thought Salem was a 24/7/365 city-wide version of Sleep No More but for the The Crucible).
The whole film is an exercise in stunt casting—by using actors pre-loaded with kitschy cultural impact like the Rock, Mandy Moore, and Justin Timberlake, Kelly demonstrates how the affected mannerisms of celebrity culture have become embedded within the texture of everyday American life (a tactic Harmony Korine would steal to brilliant effect in Spring Breakers seven years later).
When: March 3–8 / Thursday: 6–10pm; Friday–Sunday: 11am–22pm ($26) Where: 28 W 210th Street (Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan) Perhaps more so than any other Armory Week fair, Scope is full of extremes: it includes very sharp conceptual work, legitimately cool street art, kitschy Pop paintings, and laughably hokey art that is trying really hard to be, well, extreme.
" It was, indeed, a festival atmosphere at the opening, with many of the same fixtures as seasonal Midwestern gatherings no doubt taking place in backyards across the metropolitan area: chilled beverages, a delightfully smooth rocking glider, children at play, kitschy lawn ornaments, and a beanbag-tossing game that is known vernacularly as either "Bags" or, more crassly (and hilariously), "Cornhole.
Slouchy black-and-white sailor-stripe pajama pants or knee-length pleated skirts were teamed with double-C-logo roll-neck cashmere sweaters; boxy bouclé skirt suits had a Sixties silhouette and sea spray palette; and almost every look arrived with a kitschy handbag, including white quilted box bags, rope fisherman totes and round evening clutches shaped like life preservers.
Amid a status-obsessed, contemporary art scene where the kitschy ironic and the easily identifiable are prime selling points for artists (see: Richard Prince and Andy Warhol), it makes some sense that the man who is becoming the most collectible American furniture designer of the late 2000th century is also considered by many to be the least deserving of that designation.
In a collection that felt otherwise boring (lots of slouchy silhouettes, cuts that took that whole "club kid" style slightly too far, and a whole bunch of black) these more accessible pieces (which are actually part of their own capsule, available now) felt kitschy, yes, but also wearable, and, frankly, covetable (if Vetements has taught us anything, it's the viral power of a logo'ed item).
Teatum Jones, the duo that scooped the International Woolmark Prize in New York earlier this year, starts things off in the morning; Shrimps, a label that's catching attention with its kitschy faux-fur offerings, will have its presentation in the late afternoon; and come evening, Alice Archer, praised by London insiders for her ability to make floral embroidery cool again, will show off her latest.
The notion of risk as being essential to the creative process is palpable throughout her work — her 2017 film "In the Jungle" metaphorizes the artist's journey as a scientist's lonely and dangerous fieldwork in an endearingly kitschy jungle — and the city allows her and others to enact that risk in ways that would be impossible in a city with a more glaring national spotlight.
Named after the Tokyo district, the music aped the orchestral flourishes of 212s pop maestros like Burt Bacharach, Serge Gainsbourg, Brian Wilson, and Phil Spector, to produce a distinct, kitschy retro sound that was headlined by artists like Pizzicato Five, Fantastic Plastic Machine and Towa Tei; other artists like Buffalo Daughter, Cibo Matto, and Takako Minekawa were also part of the genre, but focused more on creating sounds of the future.
The images have been compared to something out of a kitschy John Waters film—the self-proclaimed Miss American Dream attacking cameramen; a good girl gone bald—but over the years, they have taken on a more potent, almost mythical meaning thanks to fans and writers who believe Britney's personal trouble (she was placed under two 23 psychiatric holds in 217) and subsequent comeback have made her an unintentional feminist icon.
The first thing shoppers will see is a life-size re-creation of a tiendita in the window (think a New York bodega) stuffed floor to ceiling with kitschy knickknacks made in Colombia, kaleidoscopic Bon Bon Bum candies alongside typical products of Colombians' daily life such as dishwashing soap; the Colombian sodas Colombiana and Postobon; hair dye; and TVs playing old Miss Colombia pageants, soccer matches and soap operas.
And believe me, this is a tragedy because in her pre-fame New York period alone, which lasted from 214-21984, Madonna lived more life than most octogenarian carnies, performing in two post punk bands rife with their own kitschy brand of new wave, touring Europe with a disco one-hit-wonder, starring in an 8mm student film that boasts an orgy scene with a transwoman, and bedding art world prodigy, Basquiat.
Scorsese often juxtaposes LaMotta's baser desires with his Catholicism, to humorous effect — for instance, he meets his second wife Vicky at a church dance; on their first date they rather euphemistically lose a ball in the minigolf hole that is shaped like a church; and we often watch Jake and Vicky in various states of undress in the door to the bedroom, which is flanked by kitschy portraits of Jesus and Mary.
His focus on the everyday and the undistinguished would continue with "All the Meat You Can Eat," a 2000 show at a gallery in then-rough SoHo, where Mr. Shore exhibited hundreds of dry or kitschy found images — flat picture postcards of hospitals and strip malls, topless pinup girls and F-216 fighter jets — among his own photographs, many shot with the Mick-a-Matic camera, a children's apparatus shaped like Mickey Mouse.
Ms. Pilon writes about Skate World, the roller rink of her Oregon youth, and what she realizes about its role in her community as it closes: ...Many a crush was nursed within those carpeted walls, where kitschy pop and disco songs were requested one-by-one on steady rotation, the smell of stale nachos and body odor permeated the air, and beige skates were rented out with questionable aromas of their own.
We imagine a rainbow of collecting, beginning with androgynous, vaguely surreal, and extremely sexual art acquired between the late 1970s and early '90s — think Egon Schiele meets Leonor Fini, but painted on satin — followed by a penchant for fantasy and science-fiction art from the mid '90s through early aughts — Syd Mead, Lebbeus Woods, and the like, but with a dominant purple palette — and, following his conversion to a Jehovah's Witness, a turn to kitschy works with heavy-handed religious iconography — think Thomas Kinkade on steroids.
Not surprising, given that DIS is essentially a retail assemblage of creative stock-image propagandists, the exhibition also offers a vast array of "collectible" products, like 90€ Telfar cotton tank tops, expensive "artist"-made mint juices, so-called "Hater Blocker Contact Lenses" by Yngve Holen that are billed as "protective charms," projects in collaboration with über-brosocialist brands like HBA (Hood by Air), and performances about the Internet like "How to DISappear in America: The Musical" (2016), which was so painfully kitschy I started to think the whole thing was a joke.
Here are a few dishes I tried, ranked on a scale of 1 to 4 Britneys (since Ms. Spears is the patron saint of Cheetos, after all): My Cheetos experience was now completos, and I have to say I really enjoyed everything about it, from the kitschy décor (a Cheetos tree, Warholian prints of Burrell and Chesty) to the signature cocktails (the tequila-and-Aperol-based Tipsy Citrus lives up to its name and you may find yourself roaming about pantsless after knocking back three of them) to the deliciously creative dishes (more mac n' cheese, please!).
