The Jessie Richardson Theatre Award (commonly known as the Jessie Awards) is given to recognize achievement in professional theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Jessies are presented by the Jessie Richardson Theatre Award Society, at an annual ceremony. The awards are named after Jessie Richardson, co-founder of the Playhouse Holiday Theatre, local actor, director and designer. The rules for the Jessie Awards are set forth by the Jessie Review Committee each year, which applies for each season only.

There are 3 theories relating to the tunnel and its origin. One theory is that the tunnel was named after Jessie Armstrong, who died after being hit by a train whilst trying to cross the tracks. The more likely origin of the tunnel is that local boys would be labelled "jessies" (Scottish word for effeminate) for using it, rather than crossing the tracks. The third, and most controversial theory, is that the tunnel was named after Jessie, a local inhabitant, who used the tunnel to peddle her wares.

Peter Anderson (born 1950) is a Canadian-American playwright. Anderson studied at the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre before moving to Canada in 1977. He has a BA in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Michigan Residential College (1972). He lives in Vancouver with his wife Melody Anderson. Anderson is the recipient of six Jessie Richardson Awards,Link to Anderson's Jessie Awards > Jessies Awards a Bay Area Critics’ Circle Award, Leo and Gemini nominations for best performance (The Overcoat), and a NY Drama Desk nomination.
