The two derived their name from a UK new wave group. After Tiger Trap disbanded in January 1994, the pair formed The Softies and recorded the four- song “Love Seat” 7-inch single for Slumberland Records. In late 1972, Phase 2 first used an early version of the "bubble letter" or "softie", a style of writing which would become extremely influential and is considered a "giant leap" in the art form. Issues #9–11 were compiled into a graphic novel, Shortcomings, released in September 2007. In Shortcomings, Tomine explored racial issues directly. In 2015, Tomine's graphic novel Killing and Dying, a collection of six short graphic stories, was released. The creation of Dennis in the 1950s had sales of The Beano soar. From issue 1678 onwards (dated 14 September 1974), Dennis the Menace replaced Biffo the Bear on the front cover, and has been there ever since. Coincidentally, on 12 March 1951, another comic strip named Dennis the Menace debuted in the US. As a result of this, the US series has initially been retitled Dennis for UK audiences, while the British character's appearances are often titled Dennis and Gnasher outside the UK. Dennis is the archetypal badly behaved schoolboy. The main recurring storyline throughout the years features his campaign of terror against a gang of "softies" (effeminate, well-behaved boys), particularly Walter.

Next, in Pink Glove, Dennis charges outside, straight into a bowl of sweet-smelling water and a bucket of rose petals, courtesy of a vigilante calling himself the Pink Glove. Dennis clambers out, only to find Rasher in a panic as the Pink Glove has tidied up his sty. Dennis and his pets go in search of the Pink Glove, who uses Dennis's own sock-filled mitt against him, briefly knocks Gnasher out with perfume, tricks Dennis into hugging a teddy bear and goes so far as to redecorate Dennis's room with flowers and soft toys overnight. Dennis narrows the suspects down to Walter, Bertie Blenkinsop and Spotty Perkins, then drags a block of ice into the softies' chalet, intending to ban whoever puts pink gloves on to move the ice.

We affiliated ourselves to the English League and began at last to get sensible notices from the Press. Teething troubles quickly began and how our baby League managed to weather them I hardly know; but we had a few faithful members and survived a war, a slump, hostility from the authorities, contempt from some of the public and complete indifference from most of it. We went on writing letters to the Press, taught it how to spell the strange words “psychology” and “psychiatry” and gradually convinced people that we were not a set of sentimental softies, but were seriously asking for less mass treatment, more individual attention to prisoners and altogether a more scientific approach to crime and criminals. We also convinced our Courts that compared with figures obtained from England they were too freely sending to Borstal and prison, instead of making proper use of the newer methods of probation of which New Zealand was still very shy.

The early 1980s brought popular attention on alternative rock bands such as The Usual and Scooter's Union. In and around Johannesburg the growth of the independent music scene led to not just a surge of bands ranging from big names (relatively speaking) Tribe after Tribe, The Dynamics, The Softies and the Spectres through to smaller hopefuls What Colours, Days Before and No Exit, but also to the growth of a vibrant DIY fanzine scene with "Palladium" and "One Page to Many" two titles of note. South African alternative rock grew more mainstream with two leading bands, Asylum Kids from Johannesburg and Peach from Durban having chart success and releasing critically acclaimed albums. The burgeoning music scene around Johannesburg saw a surge of small bands, inspired and informed by the UK DIY punk ethic, form and start performing at a growing number of venues from clubs the likes of Metalbeat, Bluebeat, King of Clubs, DV8 and Dirtbox to student run venues such as GR Bozzoli Hall and later the Free People Concert on the University of the Witwatersrand campus.
