Over the last few years, tech-house has gone from being a sturdily reliable form of club music that through its relatively uneventful rigidity gave DJs a means of filling a few hours of warm-up time to a punchline that's been milked so often and so hard that the udder's been reduced to nothing but shredded tissue and dried flecks of soured milk.

She is a master of the details that suspend the viewers' disbelief just long enough to hold them in an intimate encounter: tromp-l'oeil shadows that cast on the "wall" behind the ladder, and the loose screws that hold it together; a folded white cloth with flecks of brown paint and colorful bundles of mushed-up paint rags on its steps; a tidy pile of striped and plaid cloths ornamenting the ladder's zenith (whose perspective is exaggerated to heighten its monumentality).

For the music nerds who have followed this band's fascinating career over the last eleven years, there's still flecks of impeccable reference points that have cemented MGMT as quite possibly the strangest major-label act in existence: jittery opener "She Works Out Too Much" is a hat-tip to legendary Japanese pop aesthetes Yellow Music Orchestra, while "Days That Got Away" and "When You Die" bear the unmistakable splattered pastels of Ariel Pink (who, not coincidentally, has songwriting credits on the latter, as well as several other songs on Little Dark Age).

Each one is the point of its slice: a mix of fresh mushrooms with pepper, parsley and flecks of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano; zucchini shaved into fine threads and showered at the last minute with mint leaves; slices of late-summer red and yellow peppers picked while they still had few faintly bitter streaks of green reaching up their sides; a rough, dark pesto spooned around cherry tomatoes that were roasted until their skins turned black and pulled away from the globes of pulp inside; Concord grapes that blotch the dough with purple like exploded jelly grenades.
