Wood discovered science fiction fandom while she was studying at Carleton University in the 1960s. Wood met fellow fan Mike Glicksohn of Toronto at Boskone VI in 1969. Wood and Glicksohn married in 1970 (she subsequently sometimes published as Susan Wood Glicksohn), and they published the fanzine Energumen together until 1973. Energumen won the 1973 Hugo for Best Fanzine.

Energumen ceased publication in 1973 with #15, and the Glicksohns' marriage broke up; but planning for a special issue was already well under way at the time of Susan Wood's sudden death in November 1980.Energumen 16, pp. 4-21 and passim Issue 16 ("JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO BIND YOUR FANZINES") was published by Glicksohn in September 1981.

Energumen was an influential science fiction fanzine edited by Mike Glicksohn and Susan Wood Glicksohn from 1970–1973 (fifteen issues), with a special final "11th Anniversary Issue!!" [sic] in 1981 after Susan's death. The fanzine was based in Ottowa. It won the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine in 1973, after having been a nominee for the Hugo Award for both the prior years.

He translated a 1928 account of an exorcism by Father Theophilus Riesinger from a German magazine article, and published it, in 1935, in pamphlet form as Begone Satan!.Time Magazine, Exorcist & Energumen, Feb. 17, 1936 Father Kapsner died in Minnesota in January 1973. His pamphlet was important because it brought a detailed account of an American exorcism to a large audience for the first time in the United States.

A number of letters, articles, and novels were ostensibly written by Koontz during the 1960s and 1970s, but he has stated he did not write them. These include 30 erotic novels, allegedly written together by Koontz and his wife Gerda, including books such as Thirteen and Ready!, Swappers Convention, and Hung, the last one published under the name "Leonard Chris". They also include contributions to the fanzines Energumen and BeABohema in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including articles that mention the erotic novels,BeABohehma #8, 1970, ed.
