Thiel's group was credited with discovering that large two- dimensional islands of metal adatom clusters can have significant room temperature mobility on metal substrates, and that, contrary to what had usually been assumed, this can be the main route to coarsening (an evolution to larger sizes and fewer numbers) of these clusters. She and James W. Evans are responsible for first describing an atomic-scale mechanism for metal film growth, which they dubbed ‘downward funneling’. Because of this mechanism, they predicted an unusual variation in film roughness with temperature from theory, and eventually confirmed it experimentally using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. This is now accepted as an important mechanism that affects thin film morphology upon growth at low temperature.

The second fatal accident occurred on 1 November 1961. Deformation, metamorphism, and magmatism in the East Athabasca mylonite triangle, northern Saskatchewan: implications for the Archean and Early Proterozoic crustal structure of the Canadian Shield. The porphyroblast of garnet was formed during high grade metamorphism while the porphyroblast of cordierite was formed during subsequent exhumation. Both porphyroblasts contain monazite inclusions which were dated at 1910 Ma and 1840 Ma, respectively. And matrix monazite is dated 1800 Ma. Thus, it is interpreted that high grade metamorphism occurred after 1910 Ma and before 1840 Ma, while exhumation occurred after 1840 Ma, and the final annealing (cooling and coarsening of minerals) happened at 1800 Ma. Within the same setting as above, monazite inclusions in garnet maybe either younger than, older than or have similar ages with the matrix monazite.

More recently, her group discovered a series of naturally-occurring metal-sulfur complexes with distinct stoichiometries, which may influence stability of larger metallic features by assisting surface metal transport and hence coarsening. She was highlighted for this work in the Journal of Physical Chemistry's virtual issue highlighting 66 women in honor of Marie Curie's 150th birthday. She and her collaborators also discovered that metallic nanoparticles can be grown as encapsulated clusters near the surface of a layered material, graphite, if specific growth conditions are met. Applying a continuum elasticity model, they developed insight into the reasons for the low, flattened shapes (high aspect ratios) of these embedded particles, and a prediction that the shape of encapsulated metal islands should be universal (size-independent).

The marine incursion of the ancestral Gulf of California also introduced a single, very large depositional system (the Colorado River delta) into the Salton Trough, which rapidly prograded to the south (Winker and Kidwell, 1986). During the early Pliocene, between 5 and 4.2 million years ago, this deltaic system facilitated the deposition of a thick marine deltaic sequence of mudstone and sandstone derived from the Colorado River, known as the Deguyños Formation of the Imperial Group (formerly the Imperial Formation). The Deguyños Formation represents the distal prodelta portion of the Colorado River delta, and is characterized by upward-coarsening cycles of claystone, siltstone, sandstone and/or coquina shell beds. As the Colorado River depositional system evolved later in the Pliocene, between 4.2 and 2.8 million years ago, the marine deltaic phase gave way to a meandering fluvial system.

These atomic partitions correspond one-for-one with the edges of a complete graph. The matroid closure of a set of atomic partitions is the finest common coarsening of them all; in graph-theoretic terms, it is the partition of the vertices of the complete graph into the connected components of the subgraph formed by the given set of edges.
