Microstructurally stable nanocrystalline alloys are alloys that are designed to resist microstructural coarsening under various thermo-mechanical loading conditions. Many applications of metal materials require that they can maintain their structure and strength despite very high temperatures. Efforts to prevent deformations from long term stress, referred to as creep, consist of manipulating alloys to reduce coarsening and migration of individual grains within the metal. The small size of individual metal grains provides high interfacial surface energy which is what prompts coarsening, the increase in grain size, and eventually metallic softening.
Nanocrystalline creep is considered to follow the Coble creep mechanism, the diffusion of atoms along grain boundaries at low stress levels and high temperatures. One method used to reduce coarsening, is by employing an alloy in which one component has good solubility with another. Since grain size decreases with high solute concentration, the rate of coarsening is slowed until inconsequential.

The Sub Himalayan zone is the 10 to 25 km wide belt of Neogene Siwaliks (or Churia) group rocks forming the topographic front of the Himalaya. It rises from the fluvial plains of the active foreland basin, and this front generally mapped as the trace of the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT). Otherwise, concrete can be subject to significant spalling. Up to about 300 °C, the concrete undergoes normal thermal expansion. Above that temperature, shrinkage occurs due to water loss; however, the aggregate continues expanding, which causes internal stresses. Up to about 500 °C, the major structural changes are carbonatation and coarsening of pores.

Its thickness is greatest in eastern Pennsylvania and thins westward into Ohio. The Catskill paleogeography appears to consist of many small streams, which deposited their sedimentary load along a coastal alluvial plain that was hundreds of miles long.
The equation also explains the energy required to create an emulsion. To form the small, highly curved droplets of an emulsion, extra energy is required to overcome the large pressure that results from their small radius. The Laplace pressure, which is greater for smaller droplets, causes the diffusion of molecules out of the smallest droplets in an emulsion and drives emulsion coarsening via Ostwald ripening.

There are two basic operations for making inferences in expert systems using linear belief functions: combination and marginalization. Combination corresponds to the integration of knowledge whereas marginalization corresponds to the coarsening of knowledge. Making an inference involves combining relevant knowledge into a full body of knowledge and then projecting the full body of knowledge to a partial domain, in which an inference question is to be answered.
The base of Interval 2 exhibits a highly irregular, erosional contact with either a poorly sorted, bioturbated sandstone of Unit A lithologies or a laterally discontinuous unit of clast-supported conglomerate (Unit C). This interval typically occurs well above lake levels in the study area and is covered by vegetation. Consequently, continuous fresh exposures exhibiting diagnostic sedimentary structures are relatively rare. The dominant lithology in Interval 2 appears to be a well-cemented, fine-grained litharenite that coarsens upwards into a medium-grained sand, capped by a shell lag horizon of fragmented bivalves and gastropods (Unit D). The density of shell fragments at the top of the coarsening-upwards sequences locally approaches that of a coquina. A minimum of three coarsening-upward sequences is preserved in Interval 2, and although the litharenite appears massive in most exposures, trough cross-bedding and low-angle planar cross-bedding are evident locally.
In adaptive mesh refinement, elements are split (h-refinement) in areas where the function being calculated has a high gradient. Meshes are also coarsened, removing elements for efficiency. The multigrid method does something similar to refinement and coarsening to speed up the numerical solve, but without actually changing the mesh. For continuous changes, nodes are moved, or the higher-dimensional faces are moved by changing the polynomial order of elements.
In addition, the concepts of correlated equilibrium, trembling hand perfection, and common knowledge were introduced and analyzed. In 2005, game theorists Thomas Schelling and Robert Aumann followed Nash, Selten, and Harsanyi as Nobel Laureates. Schelling worked on dynamic models, early examples of evolutionary game theory. Aumann contributed more to the equilibrium school, introducing equilibrium coarsening and correlated equilibria, and developing an extensive formal analysis of the assumption of common knowledge and of its consequences.
In general, a better fit to the data is obtained by a larger number of distributions or parameters, but in order to extract meaningful patterns, it is necessary to constrain the number of distributions, thus deliberately coarsening the concept resolution. Finding the "right" concept resolution is a tricky problem for which many methods have been proposed (e.g., AIC, BIC, MDL, etc.), and these are frequently considered under the rubric of "model regularization".
One of the first abnormalities that may be detected is coarsening of the facial features; these symptoms can begin at 3-6 months of age. Skeletal abnormalities occur by about age 6 months, but may not be clinically obvious until 10-14 months. Patients may experience debilitating spine and hip deformities, carpal tunnel syndrome, and joint stiffness. Patients may be normal height in infancy, but stop growing by the age of 2 years.
The Gros Morne Formation consists of Upper Miocene to Lower Pliocene clastic sedimentary sequences. It can be divided into three sections: Lower, Middle and Upper Gros Morne. The Lower Gros Morne corresponds to the first set of sediments being deposited into the basin as part of the proto- Orinoco delta. It is described from its correlation onshore Southwestern Trinidad as a deep marine shale section with coarsening upward to a shallow marine sand.
As mentioned above, the deformed structure is often a 3-D cellular structure with walls consisting of dislocation tangles. As recovery proceeds these cell walls will undergo a transition towards a genuine subgrain structure. This occurs through a gradual elimination of extraneous dislocations and the rearrangement of the remaining dislocations into low-angle grain boundaries. Sub-grain formation is followed by subgrain coarsening where the average size increases while the number of subgrains decreases.
The scientists determined that the copper alloy creep occurred in dislocation climb areas under levels of relatively larger stress, claiming that any diffusion creep occurring was negligible. The core–shell-type nanostructures prevented coarsening by securing grain boundaries, a mechanism known as Zener pinning. In these structures more interfacial bonding interactions were possible, increasing strength. Oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic alloys16 and molybdenum alloys17’s great strength and ductility were also credited to these nanostructures.
On Bonavista Peninsula the depositional environment was a slope and outer shelf–below photic zone Turbidites probably were the dominant sediment transporters. It is predominantly silts and sands, in contrast to underlying Trepassey Formation, which is mostly dark grey shales. There is a coarsening up sequence throughout the two formations, such that the top of the Fermeuse is predominantly sandstones. On Avalon Peninsula there were much shallower waters, particularly than in underlying Mistaken Point Formation and Trepassey Formation.

Her dissertation was Approximation of Coarsening Madels by Homogenization of a Stefan Problem. After postdoctoral research at the Courant Institute, she returned to Bonn for her habilitation in 2002, after which she became in 2003 a professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin. She moved to the University of Oxford in 2007, where she was a fellow of St Edmund Hall.
Striving to minimize its energy leads to the coarsening of the microstructure to reach a metastable state within the specimen. This involves minimizing its GB area and changing its topological structure to minimize its energy. This grain growth can either be normal or abnormal, a normal grain growth is characterized by the uniform growth and size of all the grains in the specimen. Abnormal grain growth is when a few grains grow much larger than the remaining majority.
Candelária Sequence in the Paraná Basin The Candelária Formation or Sequence corresponds to a third-order sequence placed in the Santa Maria Supersequence. The basal portion of the formation consists of a coarsening-upward succession that begins with red mudstones, interbedded with small-scale trough cross-bedded sandstone lenses. Rhythmites and sigmoidal massive to climbing cross-laminated sandstone bodies are also present. This facies association is interpreted as a lacustrine to deltaic (distal floodplain)Pretto et al.

D. Morel reported the Belgian imperial atrocities in the Congo Free State, which was an African personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium.
Field photo of the Siwalik sandstone complex taken in the city of Jawalamukhi, Northern India. The Siwalik Group is a coarsening upward siliciclastic succession that makes up the thickest accumulation of detritus derived from the Himalaya in the foreland basin. The deposits are continental, and largely reflect deposition in floodplain, meandering river, and braided river environments. The Siwalik Group has been informally divided into the Upper, Middle, and Lower Siwalik since the early 1900's based on vertebrate fossil markers.
The dominant lithology is sandstone, which is organised into a series of coarsening-upward cycles, laid down by a west-draining axial river system. At the basin margins the sandstones interfinger with conglomerates deposited by alluvial fans. The northern conglomerates were deposited by mainly debris flow fans, while those to the south are mainly streamflow in type. Near the northern margin there is a zone where siltstones and mudstones are developed, forming the finest-grained sediments in the basin.

Symptoms vary between patients. One of the first abnormalities that may be detected is coarsening of the facial features; these symptoms can begin at 3-6 months of age. The head can be large with prominent frontal bones.
In its original airing in the United States, "Three Kings" was watched by 6.47 million homes and acquired a 3.2 rating in the 18–49 demographic, beating The Simpsons, American Dad! and King of the Hill. The Parents Television Council named Family Guy the Worst TV Show of the Week because of the episode's "violence, sexual references and contribution to the coarsening of contemporary culture." The episode received generally positive reviews from television sources and critics.
These sediments have since been metamorphosed to slate, phyllite, or fine-grained chloritoid- or garnet-porphyroblastic muscovite-chlorite-quartz schist by the Racklan orogeny at 1.6 Ga, as well as magmatism and hydrothermal activity. The Quartet group records a time of increasing sediment input beginning with shales and coarsening upward to siltstone and carbonates. The Gillespie lake group is characterised by wavy and plane bedding and preserved cross laminations, algal mats, stromatolites, pisolites, intraclasts, and mud-cracks, indicating a shallow water depositional environment.
An interesting question is: how long does the leader retain this leadership property as the network evolves? To find an answer to this question, we define the leadership persistence probability F(\tau) that aleader retains its leadership for at least up to time \tau. Persistence probability has been of interest in many different systems ranging from coarsening dynamics to fluctuating interfaces or polymer chains. The two plots at the top reveal the power-law behavior of the leadership persistence probability.
Impatience with the president and doubts about his war strategy continued to grow on Capitol Hill. In June 1966, Senator Richard Russell, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reflecting the coarsening of the national mood, declared it was time to "get it over or get out."Dallek (1998), p. 364. By late 1966, multiple sources began to report progress was being made against the North Vietnamese logistics and infrastructure; Johnson was urged from every corner to begin peace discussions.
While many computer programs can be understood in terms of machine states and transitions (see formal semantics of programming languages), their state spaces may be too large to fully represent and analyse. Modern analysis techniques therefore try to reason about abstract states, which correspond to many concrete states. Often, the abstract states are structured in such a way that by repeatedly following the effect of program steps or by coarsening the abstraction, one obtains a chain of abstractions that is proven to terminate.

While Lincoln remains in the very top tier of the historical rankings of presidents of the United States, all of the presidents have slipped in historical prestige in the public's mind. Schwartz said that the reason is what he calls the "acids of equality": as the culture of the United States became more diverse, egalitarian, and multicultural, it also suffered a "deterioration and coarsening of traditional symbols and practices."Schwartz, (1990) p. 190. Lincoln sites remain popular tourist attractions, but crowds have thinned.
The Gai-As Formation as a whole displays an upward coarsening sequence which starts with distal shallow lacustrine shales. The occurrence of flaser bedding, oscillation ripples and hummocky cross-stratification in silty intercalations indicates that the sediment, surface must have been above the storm wave base. The remarkably high content of analcime (30 volume percent) in some layers may be indicative of contemporaneous volcanic activity. Early diagenetic formation of analcime from volcanic glass in an alkaline environment has been described.
The Tropic Shale is predominantly marine mudstone and claystone, with several radioisotopically-dated bentonite marker beds, and occasional sandstone layers deposited during the late Cretaceous Period during the Upper Cenomanian through the Middle Turonian (95-92 Ma). The Tropic Shale has an average thickness range from 183–274 m. The Tropic Shale conformity overlies the Dakota Formation and underlies the Straight Cliffs Formation. The top of the Dakota Formation is known for its sandier coarsening up sequences and estuarine shell beds.
The symptoms associated with this syndrome are variable, but common features include: low birthweight, low muscle tone at birth, poor feeding in infancy (often requiring feeding by tube for a period) and oromotor dyspraxia together with moderate developmental delays and learning disabilities but amiable behaviour. Other clinically important features include epilepsy, heart defects (atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect) and kidney/urological anomalies. Silvery depigmentation of strands of hair have been noted in several patients. With age, there is an apparent coarsening of facial features.
Kinetics The ultimate driving force in self-assembly is energy minimization and the corresponding evolution towards equilibrium, but kinetic effects can also play a very strong role. These kinetic effects, such as trapping in metastable states, slow coarsening kinetics, and pathway- dependent assembly, are often viewed as complications to be overcome in, for example, the formation of block copolymers. Amphiphile self-assembly is an essential bottom-up approach of fabricating advanced functional materials. Self-assembled materials with desired structures are often obtained through thermodynamic control.
Although materials with higher melting points are more stable at room temperatures, consolidating nanocrystalline feedstock into a macroscopic component often requires exposing the material to elevated temperatures for extended periods of time, which will result in coarsening of the nanocrystalline microstructure. Thus, thermally stable nanocrystalline alloys are of considerable engineering interest. Experiments have shown that traditional microstructural stabilization techniques such as grain boundary pinning via solute segregation or increasing solute concentrations have proven successful in some alloy systems, such as Pd-Zr and Ni-W .
The Agbada Formation, which overlies the Akata Formation, contains paralic siliciclastics and are considered to be the main deltaic sequence. The formation contains the most economically exploitable hydrocarbon in the region. According to biostratigraphy— specifically the presence of Sphenolitus heteromorphis, Praeorbulina glomerosa, Discoster deflandreim and Sphenolithus moriformis—the formation was deposited over 6-7 million years during the Middle to Late Miocene. In the Delta Field, gamma ray logs show a coarsening upward trend within the Agbada Formation, which shows the regression of depositional environments within the delta.
Microstructural evolution under the Cahn–Hilliard equation, demonstrating distinctive coarsening and phase separation.Spinodal decomposition is one thermodynamic phase decomposing into two phases, when there is no nucleation barrier to this decomposition. Thus at least some fluctuations in the system spontaneously grow as they reduce the free energy, and so there is no waiting, as there typically is when there is a nucleation barrier. Spinodal decomposition can occur, for example, when mixtures of polymers are unstable as a mixture and separate into two coexisting phases, each one rich in one polymer, and poor in the other.
This becomes most noticeable in the White Mountains National Park as the trough cross stratification is most well preserved. The composition of the rock unit remains relatively uniform, however the amount of lithics increases the more distal from the source. The deposition of sandstone during channelization of the coastline occurred leading to the area becoming a sequence of fining and coarsening sandstone. This further buried the Betts Creek Beds allowing more compaction of the kerogen prior to faulting, and continued the build-up of sediment with each channel filled in over time.
For the next 35 minutes, he does just that, coarsening his textures into something industrial and vital and new. Then, just to prove he can, West brings the beauty back. Over a roughly looped sample of the Ponderosa Twins Plus One — with occasional interjections from Brenda Lee and Charlie Wilson — West returns to his roguish side, penning a filthy ode to his new wife at the time, Kim Kardashian West. There’s a reason we’re still paying attention to West after the decade he’s had; he’s always capable of something you never see coming.
The Palmiste Formation continues the regressive sequence started in the Mayaro Formation and is deposited in the late Pliocene. This formation shows a similar shift in sedimentary facies as the Mayaro formation. In the western part of the basin, there are thick, medium to fine grained sands with some interbedding with clay and silt, deposited in transitional-marine to terrestrial environment. In the eastern section of the basin, the sediments were deposited in deeper water and hence consisted of basal clay, coarsening upward into clays interbedded with fine grained sands.
The formation lies conformably on the prolifically- fossiliferous shallow marine sandstone, siltstone and mudrock of the Staithes Formation. There are six named ironstone seams which are, in order of deposition, the Osmotherley, Avicula,The bivalve Avicula has since been reclassified as the genus Oxytoma. Raisdale, Two-foot, Pecten and Main Seams. At its type locality, on the coast around Staithes, North Yorkshire, the formation attains a thickness of 25.3 metres and comprises five 'coarsening- upward' cycles of marine shale and siltstone each capped by a seam of ironstone of varying thickness, composition and iron-content.
In 2012, a tungsten (W) and 20% titanium (Ti) nanocrystalline alloy after a week of exposure to heat of 1100 degrees Celsius in an argon atmosphere was claimed by the researchers to have displayed no change in grain size from the initial 20 nm. Meanwhile, the unalloyed W under the same conditions exhibited a final size on the micrometer scale. Another reviewer describes the coarsening of the W-Ti alloy to be a 2 nm size increase from the original 22 nm. The authors attribute the microstructural stability to a complex chemical arrangement.
It is most common for the sintered part to shrink and become denser, but it can also expand or experience no net change. The main driving force for solid state sintering is an excess of surface free energy. The process of solid-state sintering is complex and dependent on the material and furnace (temperature and gas) conditions. There are six main stages that sintering processes can be grouped in which may overlap with one another: 1) initial bonding among particles, 2) neck growth, 3) pore channel closure, 4) pore rounding, 5) densification or pore shrinkage, and 6) pore coarsening.
Despite some coarsening of Dylan's voice (a critic for The Guardian characterised his singing on the album as "a catarrhal death rattle") most reviewers praised the album, and many described it as the final installment of a successful trilogy, embracing Time Out of Mind and "Love and Theft". Modern Times entered the U.S. charts at number one, making it Dylan's first album to reach that position since 1976's Desire. The New York Times published an article exploring similarities between some of Dylan's lyrics in Modern Times and the work of the Civil War poet Henry Timrod.
Photographs were published on the front pages of La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera, as well as online and in foreign media. One showed the girls' corpses with a couple having a picnic in the background; another a coffin being carried past people in sunloungers. Italians described as having condemned the scene included the "liberal elite", newspapers, and civil liberties groups, as well as Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, the Archbishop of Naples, who posted on his blog that it represented the "coarsening of human sentiment". Laura Boldrini, Italy's UNHCR representative, expressed "worry at the circumstances of how the tragedy unfolded".
Nowadays the material is available freely on the Internet.elämänkatsomustieto As a thinker, Hartikainen supports atheism and ontological materialism. He favours the words 'reality research', 'realityconception' (conception of reality) and 'lifeconception' as better alternatives for words 'science', 'world view' and 'philosophy of life' (life stance). He supports Finnish physicist Kari Enqvist's view, that emergence means 'coarsening' and the losing of information relating to the description of reality (examples: statistical thermodynamics, classical electrodynamics, thinking of an animal etc.) Hartikainen is a modern logical empiricist and he recommends not using words "a priori truth" and saying "correct by definition" or "derivable from axioms" instead.
This Miocene shale unit is considered a part of the Lower Cruse formation and is the source of the many shale diapirs that is found within the basin. The Cretaceous shale is also identified as the probable source rock for the Columbus basin. Based on the correlations presented in the paper by Leonard in 1983, the main stratigraphic units found overlying the Cretaceous shales in the Columbus basin are the Gros Morne, Mayaro, Palmiste and Erin Formation. From the bottom of the stratigraphic column of the basin, there is a general trend of the coarsening of sediment moving up the column.
Danner's film directing debut, How to Go Out on a Date in Queens, won the LA Film Awards' Best Acting and Best Movie awards. Michelle Danner’s 2013 film Hello Herman catalogs the effect that peer abuse, parental neglect and the general coarsening of society has on a typical high school student. A New York Times review found that Danner's anti-bullying agenda freighted the movie. Danner has acted in and directed over thirty plays in Los Angeles and New York, with her favorite acting credit cited as the Dramalogue award- winning Tennessee Williams' The Rose Tattoo.
In geology, it is the textural coarsening, aging or growth of phenocrysts and crystals in solid rock which is below the solidus temperature. It is often ascribed as a process in the formation of orthoclase megacrysts, as an alternative to the physical processes governing crystal growth from nucleation and growth rate thermochemical limitations. In chemistry, the term refers to the growth of larger crystals from those of smaller size which have a higher solubility than the larger ones. In the process, many small crystals formed initially slowly disappear, except for a few that grow larger, at the expense of the small crystals.
Virilism (androgen excess) is most obvious in women, and may produce excess facial and body hair, acne, enlargement of the clitoris, deepening of the voice, coarsening of facial features, cessation of menstruation. Conn syndrome (mineralcorticoid excess) is marked by high blood pressure, which can result in headache and hypokalemia (low serum potassium, which can in turn produce muscle weakness, confusion, and palpitations), low plasma renin activity, and high serum aldosterone. Feminization (estrogen excess) is most readily noted in men, and includes breast enlargement, decreased libido, and impotence.Kasper DL, Braunwald E, Fauci AS, Hauser SL, Longo DL, Jameson JL. While the mechanical behavior of ceramics is often dominated by flaws, i.e. porosity, instead of grain size, grain-size strengthening is also observed in high-density ceramic specimens . Additionally, nanocrystalline ceramics have been shown to sinter more rapidly than bulk ceramics, leading to higher densities and improved mechanical properties, although extended exposure to the high pressures and elevated temperatures required to sinter the part to full density can result in coarsening of the nanostructure. The large volume fraction of grain boundaries associated with nanocrystalline materials causes interesting behavior in ceramic systems, such as superplasticity in otherwise brittle ceramics.
ZrB2 parts are usually hot pressed (pressure applied to the heated powder) and then machined to shape. Sintering of ZrB2 is hindered by the material's covalent nature and presence of surface oxides which increase grain coarsening before densification during sintering. Pressureless sintering of ZrB2 is possible with sintering additives such as boron carbide and carbon which react with the surface oxides to increase the driving force for sintering but mechanical properties are degraded compared to hot pressed ZrB2. Additions of ~30 vol% SiC to ZrB2 is often added to ZrB2 to improve oxidation resistance through SiC creating a protective oxide layer - similar to aluminum's protective alumina layer.
Particles formed by reduction must have their surfaces stabilized to prevent undesirable particle agglomeration (when multiple particles bond together), growth, or coarsening. The driving force for these phenomena is the minimization of surface energy (nanoparticles have a large surface to volume ratio). This tendency to reduce surface energy in the system can be counteracted by adding species which will adsorb to the surface of the nanoparticles and lowers the activity of the particle surface thus preventing particle agglomeration according to the DLVO theory and preventing growth by occupying attachment sites for metal atoms. Chemical species that adsorb to the surface of nanoparticles are called ligands.
Further, he was the first to use long-wave theories to describe the destabilization of deposited solid films and their evolution to quantum dots through coarsening via the derivation of convective Cahn-Hilliard equations. He has given growth laws for nano-wire evolution by bulk or surface diffusion (stepwise growth). Finally, Davis has pioneered the study of the interaction of fluid and solidification finding ways of using imposed motion to delay morphological instability and showing how freezing can modify the modes of convection. He recently has outlined a method of freezing a metallic foam so as to produce a porous solid with uniform permeability.

His most creative period was the 1950s when he appeared in Private's Progress (1956), The Green Man (1956), Blue Murder at St Trinian's (1957), I'm All Right Jack (1959) and Carlton-Browne of the F.O. (1959). Beginning the 1960s by starring in School for Scoundrels, Terry-Thomas then began appearing in American films, coarsening his already unsubtle screen character in films such as Bachelor Flat (1962), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) and How to Murder Your Wife (1965). From the mid-1960s he frequently starred in European films, in roles such as Sir Reginald in the successful French film La Grande Vadrouille.
Alluvial fans are built in response to erosion induced by tectonic uplift, and upwards coarsening of beds reflects cycles of erosion in the highlands feeding sediments to the fan. However, climate and changes in base level may be as important. Alluvial fans in the Himalayas show older fans entrenched and overlain by younger fans, which in turn are cut by deep incised valleys showing two terrace levels. Dating via optical stimulated thermoluminescence (OSL) suggests a hiatus of 70 to 80 thousand years between the old and new fans, with evidence of tectonic tilting at 45 thousand years ago and an end to fan deposition 20 thousand years ago.
Area specific resistance(ASR) can be obtained from the slope of j-V curve. Commonly used/tested electrodes materials are nickel/zirconia cermet (Ni/YSZ) and lanthanum-substituted strontium titanate/ceria composite for SORFC cathode, and lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) for SORFC anode. Other anode materials can be lanthanum strontium ferrite (LSF), lanthanum strontium copper ferrite(LSCuF) and lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCoF). Studies show that Ni/YSZ electrode was less active in reverse fuel cell operation than in fuel cell operation, and this can be attributed to a diffusion-limited process in the electrolysis direction, or its susceptibility to aging in a high-steam environment, primarily due to coarsening of nickel particles.
On 1 November 1961, a Silver City Airways Bristol Freighter coming from Cherbourg – Maupertus Airport crashed on aborting approach to Guernsey due to malfunctioning of the automatic pitch coarsening unit of the starboard propeller, killing the two pilots with the other 8 occupants surviving. On 26 September 1963, a British United Air Ferries Bristol Superfreighter (registration:G-AMWA) overran runway 28 at Guernsey Airport after engine problems. None of the 3 crew and 1 passenger was injured but the aircraft was written off. On 14 April 1965, British United Airways Flight 1030X Douglas Dakota (registration:G-ANTB) crashed near Jersey Airport after a flight from Paris, killing 27 passengers and crew of the 28 people on board.
Thiel's group was credited with discovering that large two- dimensional islands of metal adatom clusters can have significant room temperature mobility on metal substrates, and that, contrary to what had usually been assumed, this can be the main route to coarsening (an evolution to larger sizes and fewer numbers) of these clusters. She and James W. Evans are responsible for first describing an atomic-scale mechanism for metal film growth, which they dubbed ‘downward funneling’. Because of this mechanism, they predicted an unusual variation in film roughness with temperature from theory, and eventually confirmed it experimentally using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. This is now accepted as an important mechanism that affects thin film morphology upon growth at low temperature.
The second fatal accident occurred on 1 November 1961. Bristol 170 Mark 32 Superfreighter registration G-ANWL operating a scheduled service from Cherbourg to Guernsey crashed after losing height during a missed approach to Guernsey Airport, damaging the aircraft beyond repair and killing two out of three crew members (all seven passengers survived).ASN Aircraft accident description Bristol 170 Superfreighter Mark 32 G-ANWL — Les Prevosts, Guernsey, Channel Islands Having failed to gain height following a power increase to go around, the aircraft struck the ground with its starboard wing and cartwheeled due to a malfunctioning automatic pitch coarsening unit of the starboard propeller. The non-fatal accident occurred on 19 January 1953.
Deformation, metamorphism, and magmatism in the East Athabasca mylonite triangle, northern Saskatchewan: implications for the Archean and Early Proterozoic crustal structure of the Canadian Shield. The porphyroblast of garnet was formed during high grade metamorphism while the porphyroblast of cordierite was formed during subsequent exhumation. Both porphyroblasts contain monazite inclusions which were dated at 1910 Ma and 1840 Ma, respectively. And matrix monazite is dated 1800 Ma. Thus, it is interpreted that high grade metamorphism occurred after 1910 Ma and before 1840 Ma, while exhumation occurred after 1840 Ma, and the final annealing (cooling and coarsening of minerals) happened at 1800 Ma. Within the same setting as above, monazite inclusions in garnet maybe either younger than, older than or have similar ages with the matrix monazite.

More recently, her group discovered a series of naturally-occurring metal-sulfur complexes with distinct stoichiometries, which may influence stability of larger metallic features by assisting surface metal transport and hence coarsening. She was highlighted for this work in the Journal of Physical Chemistry's virtual issue highlighting 66 women in honor of Marie Curie's 150th birthday. She and her collaborators also discovered that metallic nanoparticles can be grown as encapsulated clusters near the surface of a layered material, graphite, if specific growth conditions are met. Applying a continuum elasticity model, they developed insight into the reasons for the low, flattened shapes (high aspect ratios) of these embedded particles, and a prediction that the shape of encapsulated metal islands should be universal (size-independent).
The marine incursion of the ancestral Gulf of California also introduced a single, very large depositional system (the Colorado River delta) into the Salton Trough, which rapidly prograded to the south (Winker and Kidwell, 1986). During the early Pliocene, between 5 and 4.2 million years ago, this deltaic system facilitated the deposition of a thick marine deltaic sequence of mudstone and sandstone derived from the Colorado River, known as the Deguyños Formation of the Imperial Group (formerly the Imperial Formation). The Deguyños Formation represents the distal prodelta portion of the Colorado River delta, and is characterized by upward-coarsening cycles of claystone, siltstone, sandstone and/or coquina shell beds. As the Colorado River depositional system evolved later in the Pliocene, between 4.2 and 2.8 million years ago, the marine deltaic phase gave way to a meandering fluvial system.

Each set of elements has a least upper bound and a greatest lower bound, so that it forms a lattice, and more specifically (for partitions of a finite set) it is a geometric lattice.. The partition lattice of a 4-element set has 15 elements and is depicted in the Hasse diagram on the left. Based on the cryptomorphism between geometric lattices and matroids, this lattice of partitions of a finite set corresponds to a matroid in which the base set of the matroid consists of the atoms of the lattice, namely, the partitions with n-2 singleton sets and one two-element set. These atomic partitions correspond one-for-one with the edges of a complete graph. The matroid closure of a set of atomic partitions is the finest common coarsening of them all; in graph-theoretic terms, it is the partition of the vertices of the complete graph into the connected components of the subgraph formed by the given set of edges.
