Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The Ride is a dark ride located in the Cloud Cuckoo Land area of Alton Towers theme park, Staffordshire, England. It is based upon the famous Roald Dahl book of the same name, and takes its thematic inspiration from the illustrations of Quentin Blake. The ride is split into two segments, the first being a boat ride along the chocolate river inside Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Wyldstyle explains that Business wants to use the Kragle , a tube of Krazy Glue with a weathered label, to freeze the world into his own personal vision of orderly perfection. Though disappointed to find that Emmet is not a Master Builder, Wyldstyle and Vitruvius are convinced of his potential when he recalls visions of a deity referred to as "The Man Upstairs". Emmet, Wyldstyle, and Vitruvius evade Bad Cop's forces with the aid of Batman, Wyldstyle's boyfriend. They visit the hidden realm of Cloud Cuckoo Land, where they meet Unikitty.

MetalBeard originally had a normal pirate body, which he lost in a mission to the Octan Tower. He later rescued Emmet, Wyldstyle, Batman, Vitruvius, Princess Unikitty and Benny after the destruction of Unikitty's kingdom, Cloud Cuckoo Land. In The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, it is shown MetalBeard can transform other forms, including a bike, to fight off the Duplo Invasion.

The work also features video artist Joan Jonas in the role of town elder. Erik Moskowitz and Amanda Trager began to work together formally in 2006 when invited to the Montalvo Arts Center in Northern California as part of the Lucas Artists Residency Program, where they conceived their first collaboration, Cloud Cuckoo Land (2008). The work takes its title from a failed utopia in Aristophanes' comedy The Birds and tells the story of a couple that leaves the city for an intentional living community. Using a formal device of ventriloquism, which appears in Moskowitz and Trager's other collaborative work, dialogue is dubbed and sung by a "digitally layered 'multi-voice,'" in which "the artists' voices, mixed occasionally with others are collapsed in a single harmony." The work features both Trager and Moskowitz as fictional characters and, later, as themselves in the process of editing the video.

The question recurs throughout the work: "why and for whom do artists create?" The work was made with the support of a residency granted to the artists at Headlands Center for the Arts in Northern California in late 2011. In 2014, the project received a Finishing Funds Award from The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes / NYSCA for its presentation as an installation at Participant Inc, a non-profit gallery on New York's Lower East Side. In 2013, the Centre Pompidou’s Hors Pistes film festival featured Cloud Cuckoo Land, The Story of Elfranko Wessel, Two Russians in the Free World, and A Bit of Dirt in a retrospective screening.

Alton Beast (later known as New Beast) was a roller coaster at Alton Towers. It first opened in 1988 in the Talbot Street (now Cloud Cuckoo Land) section of the park with the Alton Mouse, a second-hand wild mouse coaster, and was marketed by the park as the largest coaster in the UK. It was a very popular ride, and it stayed in Talbot Street until 1992, when it was moved to Thunder Valley near the Thunder Looper (where the Rollercoaster Restaurant is now) and renamed the New Beast. In 1994, Nemesis opened and the area was changed into Forbidden Valley. The New Beast stayed in Forbidden Valley until the end of 1997, when it was removed to make way for Air, the park's 2002 flying coaster.

In the 1980s, both the Reagan and Thatcher administrations in the US and UK followed a 'constructive engagement' policy with the apartheid government, vetoing the imposition of UN economic sanctions on South Africa, as they both fiercely believed in free trade and saw South Africa as a bastion against Marxist forces in Southern Africa. Thatcher declared the ANC a terrorist organisation, and in 1987 her spokesman, Bernard Ingham, famously said that anyone who believed that the ANC would ever form the government of South Africa was "living in cloud cuckoo land". By the late 1980s, however, with the tide of the Cold War turning and no sign of a political resolution in South Africa, Western patience with the apartheid government began to run out. By 1989, a bipartisan Republican/Democratic initiative in the US favoured economic sanctions (realised as the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act), the release of Nelson Mandela and a negotiated settlement involving the ANC.

The Birds lines 685–688 The Chorus delivers a brief account of the genealogy of the gods, claiming that the birds are children of Eros and grandchildren of Night and Erebus, thus establishing their claim to divinity ahead of the Olympians. It cites some of the benefits the audience derives from birds (such as early warnings of a change in seasons) and it invites the audience to join them since birds easily manage to do things mere men are afraid to do (such as beating up their fathers and committing adultery). Pisthetaerus and Euelpides emerge from the Hoopoe's bower laughing at each other's unconvincing resemblance to a bird. After discussion, they name the city-in-the-sky Nephelokokkygia, or literally "cloud-cuckoo-land" (Νεφελοκοκκυγία), and then Pisthetaerus begins to take charge of things, ordering his friend to oversee the building of the city walls while he organizes and leads a religious service in honour of birds as the new gods.

Alton Towers is working with children's author David Walliams to develop a new themed area, 'World of David Walliams', replacing Cloud Cuckoo Land in Spring 2020, the new area will feature a dark ride themed to the author's Gangsta Granny children's book. Alton Towers is located in a Conservation Area, which puts restrictions on its permissible development, notably that no structures in the park should be built above tree line and if so should be disguised from external views of the park; this can be seen on the ride Rita, where the highest sections of track are camouflaged green. Noise pollution is also a problem for the park due to the close proximity to the villages of Alton and Farley and the town of Cheadle. There have been several cases where Alton Towers have been taken to court over the noise levels emitted from the park and have been served noise abatement orders between 2004 and 2006.
