Jon & Lee & The Checkmates In 1964, Finley joined Toronto-based band The Checkmates with the help of Peter Hodgson, the band's bass player and Finley's cousin. With Finley's inclusion, the band was renamed Jon and Lee and The Checkmates. After initial success, the band signed a contract with large RCA, despite Finley's connection with Elektra producer Paul Rothchild, who would eventually recruit Finley to Rhinoceros. VS-22 was assigned to Carrier Anti-Submarine Air Group 54 (CVSG-54) at NAS Quonset Point and operated from Essex-class anti-submarine carriers, mostly in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea: USS Lake Champlain, June 1960 - May 1965; USS Essex, June 1967 - August 1967; USS Wasp, March 1969 - November 1971; USS Intrepid, March 1972 (as part of CVSG-56). It was established as Bomber Fighter Squadron VBF-82 on 20 August 1945, redesignated as Fighter Squadron VF-18A on 15 November 1946, as VF-172 on 11 August 1948, and as VA-172 on 1 November 1955. Later VS-22 participated in Operations Provide Comfort and Provide Promise, providing radar locating and command and control information. In February 1994, VS-22 joined CVW-3 and USS Dwight D. One of the four basic checkmates alongside the Queen mate, the Rook mate, and the king and two bishops mate, the bishop and knight mate occurs when the king works together with a bishop and knight to force the opponent king to the corner of the board. The bishop and knight endgame can be difficult to master: some positions may require up to 34 moves of perfect play before checkmate can be delivered.

Born in Leeds, Hawkshaw worked as a printer for several years before becoming a professional musician, first joining the pop group The Crescendos. In the early 1960s, he was a member of rock and roll group Emile Ford and the Checkmates. He also formed the Mohawks band and Rumplestiltskin with some session musicians. At that time, Hawkshaw was an exponent of the Hammond organ, heard in the Mohawks' music, and also on the UK recording of the musical Hair.

It was also re-recorded by The Foundations featuring Colin Young and appeared on their 1968 Marble Arch album. Rex Goh was born as Goh Tee Haut on 5 May 1951 in Singapore and grew up in Aljunied. Note: user is required to click on 'Writers' tab and enter 'Rex Goh'. Results give both Goh Rex and Goh Tee Haut Rex; they are the same person and lead to the same work. At ten he learned the ukulele with guidance from a neighbouring musician, Benny Chan, who was a guitarist for a local group, The Checkmates.

On 16 April 1995, VS-22 returned from their Mediterranean deployment on board Dwight D. Eisenhower. On 26 November 1996, VS-22 deployed on board USS Theodore Roosevelt to the Mediterranean and the North Persian Gulf. VS-22 participated in operations "Southern Watch" and "Decisive Endeavor" as well as numerous other joint exercises. On 21 April 1997, in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Checkmates became the first S-3B squadron to launch the AGM-65F Infrared Maverick missile.

Williams began her career on stage in the 1985 production, One Man Band, as one of "the women." She followed it in 1989 as "Laura" in Checkmates. In 1994, she broadened her ascendant music career into a theatrical role when she replaced Chita Rivera as Aurora in the Broadway production of Kiss of the Spider Woman. In 1998, she portrayed Della Green in the revival of St. Louis Woman, and Carmen Jones in the 2002 Kennedy Center Special Performance of Carmen Jones.

While "the Jury" was the name used for Justice's subsequent backing band, on this first recording he is backed by the Checkmates. Emil's cousin, Bob Xavier, and Mike Oliver recruited three members of Jimmy's backing group into a new band, calling themselves "The Jury". "What Do You Want?" was a 1959 song that became a number one hit in the United Kingdom for Adam Faith. It was written by Les Vandyke and produced by John Burgess and arranged by John Barry. It first appeared on the UK Singles Chart on 20 November 1959 and spent 19 weeks there. It was at number one for three weeks, sharing the position for the final week with "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For?" by Emile Ford & The Checkmates.

Included in this initial group were Doug Hastings (guitar) and Alan Gerber (keyboards and vocals). A second audition was held at a Los Angeles motel in November 1967, where approximately twenty musicians were reviewed. After this meeting, John Finley (vocals) and Danny Weis (guitar) were chosen to work with Hastings and Gerber. Finley and Hodgson were both former members of Jon and Lee & the Checkmates, a band which Rothchild had expressed an interest in signing as early as 1965 that had broken up in September 1967.

Mitchell was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and began singing when at school. After first learning trumpet, he taught himself to play guitar and piano, and started writing songs at an early age. He became lead singer in a local group, the Checkmates, who first recorded in 1961, before he left to join another group, the Cash Registers, who had previously been led by Alvin Cash. They performed in Indianapolis, where Mitchell acquired the nickname "Prince" Phillip, but he was then drafted into the military.

His only Broadway production, Checkmates, in 1988, co-starring Ruby Dee, was also the Broadway debut of Denzel Washington. He also appeared in productions at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, and The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C. A particularly important task for the squadron was supporting the work-up of RAN warships by acting as targets; in this role Skyhawks were often deployed to RAAF Base Laverton in Victoria and RAAF Base Pearce in Western Australia. 724 Squadron also formed a Skyhawk-equipped aerobatics team called the Checkmates. From the mid-1970s the RAN investigated options to replace Melbourne and her air group. During 1977 the Navy sought tenders for an aircraft carrier capable of operating Harrier Jump Jets and helicopters.

Bobby Kris reformed the band in mid-1968 with MacBain, Oskirko, Davis and former Jon and Lee & The Checkmates guitarist Larry Leishman (born April 4, 1947, Dunfermline, Scotland). One of the reconstituted band's first dates was at the Night Owl on June 13–14, 1968. The new look group played for another year but after appearing at the Night Owl on June 19–21, 1969, the band finally imploded. Leishman subsequently played with Rhinoceros while MacBain joined Peter Quaife's post-Kinks band, Mapleoak in England.

Earlier in her career, Hawkins was a member of the New Lafayette Theatre in Harlem. She was also involved with the Play- House of the Ridiculous, with John Vaccaro and Ronald Tavel. From the time of their second album Satin Chickens (1969), Rothchild and Mohawk were no longer involved with production. The album was instead produced by David Anderle. Bassist Jerry Penrod abruptly departed from the band after the album's completion; he was briefly replaced by Danny Weis' brother, Steve, and later by Finley's cousin and former bandmate in Jon & Lee & The Checkmates Peter Hodgson. Hodgson had lost out to Jerry Penrod in the initial auditions and had then joined David Clayton-Thomas in Toronto for his "David Clayton-Thomas Combine".

Lewis Bedinsky was born in El Paso, Texas, the son of Joseph Bedinsky, a Jewish immigrant from Odessa, Ukraine, who owned a small garment factory in the town, and his wife Sara (née Newman) who had been born in New York City. His parents divorced when he was a child, and he moved with his mother and uncle, Max Newman, to Boyle Heights in Los Angeles. Sea Control Squadron 22 (VS-22) Checkmates was a carrier-based United States Navy squadron based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida. The squadron flew the Lockheed S-3B Viking and their mission was mining, undersea and surface warfare, electronic reconnaissance and analysis, over the horizon targeting, and aerial refueling. The squadron was last attached to Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) and was the last squadron flying the Viking. VS-22 was disestablished in a ceremony at NAS Jacksonville on January 29, 2009, and officially on March 31, 2009.

While attached to the "Checkmates," he deployed twice to the Western Pacific/Persian Gulf. His second deployment was on short notice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom soon after the events of 9/11. Honors reported to the Bureau of Personnel (BUPERS) as the head junior officer detailer in May 2002. He was selected for carrier executive officer in October 2002 and departed BUPERS in October 2003 to begin Aviation Nuclear Officer training. He reported as Executive Officer of in July 2005, deploying twice prior to departing in September 2007.

However, Geri outsmarts himself by faking a heart attack to distract himself and spinning the board around, knocking over the pieces. While his alternate self is still distracted, Geri checkmates what is now his opponent's king. In the spring of 1969, Greenjackets players were called together for a meeting and told that they would need to go out on their own if they wanted the team to continue playing. Under new leadership of President Dick Leland and Vice President Jim Willing, Greenjackets football would continue to thrive. In May 1969 a newly organized league, the Empire Football League, was incorporated in Poughkeepsie, NY. The original five-team league comprised the Hudson Falls Greenjackets, Dutchess County Checkmates (Poughkeepsie), Hudson Vikings, Cohoes Olympiads, and Troy Titans. The Greenjackets would go on to win the inaugural 1969 EFL championship.

Toni Wine (born June 4, 1947 in Washington Heights, New York City, United States) is an American pop music songwriter, who wrote songs for such artists as The Mindbenders ("A Groovy Kind of Love"), Tony Orlando and Dawn ("Candida"), and Checkmates, Ltd. ("Black Pearl") in the late 1960s and 1970s. Wine also sang the female vocals for the cartoon music group The Archies, most notably on their #1 hit song "Sugar, Sugar" (singing the line "I'm gonna make your life so sweet"). She shared the lead vocals in the Archies' subsequent single, "Jingle Jangle" with Ron Dante using his falsetto voice.

The song is a well-known pop standard, recorded by many artists, including a duet between Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby (for their album Fancy Meeting You Here (1958)), Ella Fitzgerald, Joni James, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Buffett, Fats Domino and Liza Minnelli. In the UK, the biggest hit version was recorded in 1959 by Emile Ford and the Checkmates peaking at #3 in the official singles chart. Ronnie Dove recorded the song for his 1966 album Ronnie Dove Sings the Hits for You.

Although we do not see the White King again, he is placed into check by the Red Knight before the clumsy soldier is defeated by the even- clumsier White Knight. Gardner, in The Annotated Alice has observed that he is also later put into check by the Red Queen, without either side showing any acknowledgment of it. The White Queen, with characteristic stupidity, performs a completely pointless move on her turn. After Alice "takes" the Red Queen and checkmates the inanimate Red King, any potential danger is removed and the game, as well as her dream, comes to an end.

In 1976, she played Sister Anna in the musical Mardi Gras (which opened on 18 March at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London). It was through this that she was discovered and signed for her first record release, "First Time Around". The club grew out of the weekend dance concerts Miller and Austin promoted starting in 1961, featuring live KLAS Radio broadcasts from the Knights of Columbus Hall and the National Guard Armory in Downtown Las Vegas. In Monster Chess, White checkmates Black when, no matter where Black moves, White will always be able to take Black's king by making two consecutive moves. For example, suppose White moves his pawn to a square that attacks the black king (where attacks means that if White makes two moves in a row, he will be able to take the black king). In November 2000 VS-22 and CVW-3 embarked on USS Harry S. Trumans maiden deployment. On 16 February 2001, CVW-3 participated in strikes against Iraq as a part of Operation Southern Watch. The Checkmates deployed for a second time with the Truman in December 2002, this time participating in Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, launching missions from the Eastern Mediterranean. October 2004 saw VS-22 deploying with CVW-3 and Harry S. Truman for the last time. VS-22 flew 1170 sorties and 3220 hours in support of "Operation Iraqi Freedom", patrolling the oil infrastructure in the Persian Gulf during "Operation Sea Dragon II" missions.

The mate is delivered with the white rook, and the black king cannot stay or move to d4 or f4. The white king prevents the black king from escaping to d5 or f5 and prevents capture of the knight, while that knight prevents escape to d3 and f3, and the black rook blocks escape to e3, while not being attacked by any of White's pieces. The very restrictive definition of an ideal mate means that it rarely ends actual chess games, excepting some basic checkmates (such as king and rook against a lone king), but ideal mates are a common theme in chess problems, like the one at right.

The fifty-move rule in chess states that a player can claim a draw if no has been made and no pawn has been moved in the last fifty moves (for this purpose a "move" consists of a player completing their turn followed by the opponent completing their turn). The purpose of this rule is to prevent a player with no chance of winning from obstinately continuing to play indefinitely, or seeking to win by tiring the opponent. All of the basic checkmates can be accomplished in well under 50 moves. However, in the 20th century it was discovered that certain endgame positions are winnable but require more than 50 moves (without a capture or a pawn move).

It became a UK hit in 1959 when a doo-wop version, produced by Michael Barclay, became a number one hit for Emile Ford and the Checkmates over the Christmas and New Year of 1959/60, having overtaken Adam Faith's 'What Do You Want?'. Its stay in the UK Singles Chart began on 31 October 1959 and lasted 17 weeks. The last chart-topper of the 1950s, it retained the number one position for the first three weeks of 1960 until it was replaced by Michael Holliday's 'Starry Eyed' on 29 January 1960. The 1945 film Nob Hill, starring George Raft, Joan Bennett and Peggy Ann Garner, featured Vivian Blaine singing this song.

It was at the same Tropicana Hotel that Fonfara encountered ex-Checkmates John Finley and Peter Hodgson, who encouraged him to audition for Rhinoceros. See Rhinoceros. He was then selected by producer Paul Rothchild as a member of the Elektra Records' hand- picked, "supergroup", Rhinoceros, in December 1967. Fonfara was the co-writer of the band's major hit, "Apricot Brandy", and recorded three albums with the group. Upon the dissolution of Rhinoceros in 1971, Fonfara joined with ex- Rhinoceros bandmates John Finley, Danny Weis, Larry Leishman and Peter Hodgson to form the group Blackstone. The band recorded one album in 1972, On The Line, again produced by Paul Rothchild, prior to splintering and then breaking up in 1973.

Other Hong Kong English Pop artists include Judi Jim (詹小屏), D'Topnotes- 3 of their members include lead singer and bass player Christine Samson, drummer Michael Samson, singer Vikki Samson (the children of bandleader Lobing Samson), Michael Remedios and The Mystics, Danny Diaz & The Checkmates. Based in hotels and ballrooms, Hong Kong nightclubs featured both Filipino and Chinese dance bands often fronted by local female singers. At the upper end of the market, Rebecca Pan, Mona Fong (方逸華) and Kiang Ling (江玲) became well known for their mixed Mandarin and English repertoires. Diamond Records also became an independent HK label established in 1960, issuing albums in Mandarin and English originals.

Several of Jackson's songs later became hits for other artists, including Ronnie Milsap, whose 1982 cover version of "Any Day Now" reached No. 1 on the Country and Adult Contemporary charts, and Michael McDonald, who covered "I Keep Forgettin'" with much success. Lisa proposes creating an honor code that will make the student not to cheat and turn any cheater in. Although every student declines at first, Lisa manages to get every student to sign the honor code by getting the most influential students to sign the honor code such as Nelson (the strongest kid), Martin (the smartest kid) and Milhouse (the class nerd), and after a few days Lisa's code begins to work as the students are studying much harder. Lisa accidentally grabs Bart's backpack and realizes that Bart is cheating. Lisa threatens to turn Bart in, but Bart checkmates her by smugly stating that if he gets caught cheating it will confirm her system is not working and destroy it.

The game is resumed, but Akopyan is upset to find his clock running which puts Marcel up in time advantage, but Marcel wait out about five minutes without a move to level the game time and the two finalist resume fire for fire. Back home, Ito invited Donny and Andre over for supposedly business talk, but Andre suspects something to be off about the meeting. He seizes Ito's walkman and forbade him from answering the phone, going on talking about Sedrick and his girl Chanaya and what he might do to them. Ito is pissed and grabs Andre and bashes his head on the refrigerator glass till Andre is unconscious and then leaves the store into the street.

He later returned to Los Angeles to work with Jackson Browne before finally joining Rhinoceros in April 1969. Three more band members would leave before the recording of the third album: first was guitarist Doug Hastings, who left that summer to be replaced by another Checkmate, Larry Leishman, who had played with "Freedom Fair" and "The Power Project" until mid-1968 and then with Bobby Kris & The Imperials. A bit later Alan Gerber left the band due to disagreements over band manager Billy Fields' decision to not have them perform at Woodstock; Billy Mundi would follow him shortly after. The two roles of singer and drummer were taken up by The Checkmates' manager/drummer Duke Edwards, who had also played with Rhinoceros newcomer Leishman in The Duke Edwards Cycle in early 1969.

Unable to record, Jon and Lee & The Checkmates concentrated on extending their fan base beyond southern Ontario into the northern United States, establishing pockets of support in New York and Philadelphia. In New York, they followed their engagement at the Peppermint Lounge with 2 weeks at the Phone Booth (early February 1966). In June, they appeared on a concert bill at Shea Stadium with The Temptations, The Chiffons and Junior Walker & the All Stars. Throughout 1966, the band also consolidated its Toronto following, holding down a residency at the Avenue Road Club, and appearing at other notable venues such as the Broom and Stone, the Gogue Inn and the Hawk's Nest. In the fall, while in New York again, an important production deal was struck with B.B.& D. Productions [Daniel Secunda (cousin of Procol Harum’s manager Tony Secunda), Billy Barberis and Bobby Weinstein].

"Everybody Loves a Lover" was remade by the Shirelles in 1962, reaching #19 in January 1963: this version, the group's final collaboration with producer Luther Dixon, replicates the backbeat and instrumentation of the Barbara George hit "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)". Besides concurrent covers for the UK market by both the Undertakers and Cliff Bennett, the Shirelles' version of "Everybody Loves a Lover" was also the template for the Sandie Shaw version recorded for her 1965 Sandie album, and also the Peaches and Herb version recorded for their 1967 album For Your Love. Also a live performance by Beryl Marsden of "Everybody Loves a Lover" with the Shirelles' version's arrangement was recorded at the Cavern Club in June 1963 and released on the multi-artist album At The Cavern released 1964. This theatre company is named after the African-American branch of the Federal Theatre Project, which was created in the United States during the Great Depression to provide resources for theatre and other artistic programs. The company has operated out of a few different locations on Henry Street in the lower east side of Manhattan. Since 1970 The New Federal Theatre has provided its community with a stage and collection of talented performers to express the voices of numerous African-America playwrights. New Federal Theatre boasts nationally known playwrights such as Ron Milner (Checkmates), Ed Bullins (The Taking of Miss Janine), and Ntozake Shange (For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf) as well as actors including Jackée Harry, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, Dick Anthony Williams, Glynn Turman, Taurean Blacque, Samuel L. Jackson, and Laurence Fishburne.

In the early months of 1967, Jon and Lee & The Checkmates increasingly spent time in New York and Philadelphia, only returning to Toronto intermittently to play shows. It was at this time, the trio of Secunda, Barberis and Weinstein took the band into the studio to record the four sides, which were later leased to ABC Records to coincide with a show at Steve Paul's The Scene. A cover of John Sebastian's "Girl, Beautiful Girl," (to have been the band's debut single) was put aside in favor of "Bring It Down Front", written by Nashville hit songwriter, Eddie Reeves and Bobby Weinstein (Teddy Randazzo co-writer of Little Anthony hits), b/w the Duke Edwards' instrumental "Pork Chops". Issued during July, "Bring It Down Front" failed to chart in the US but was a hit back home in Canada on Sparton Records, reaching #10 on the Toronto CHUM chart, and #23 on the national RPM chart in October.

Some players advance the central pawns first anyway, while others prefer to advance the rooks' pawns in order to open lines of attack for the more powerful pieces; it is not known which move, if any, is objectively best. The different geometry of the square and circular boards creates considerable differences in endgame theory: three of the four "basic checkmates" on a square board (those with king and rook, king and two bishops, or king and bishop and knight against a lone king) rely on forcing the defending king into the corner of the board, and thus are impossible on a circular board since it doesn't have corners. The "basic mates" in circular chess are thus those with king and queen, king and rook and minor piece, or king and three minor pieces against a lone king. The greater tendency towards drawn endgames often results in the defender playing on in a position which would be considered cause for resignation on a square board.

Upon recommendation from Bobby Womack, Adams appeared in the house band for a TV program hosted by NFL defensive tackle Rosey Grier, who was also a singer. This led to further studio work in Los Angeles; he played on recordings by the Jackson 5, Henry Mancini, Lou Rawls, Willie Hutch, Sonny Bono, Nancy Wilson, Kim Weston, the Ballads (on their 1968 single "God Bless Our Love"), Sonny Charles & the Checkmates, Ltd. (on the 1969 single "Black Pearl", produced by Phil Spector), and others. He contributed to TV and movie soundtracks including Cactus Flower, Buck and the Preacher, The Bill Cosby Show, and Ironside. His song "Love And Peace" was covered by Quincy Jones on his Grammy Award-winning 1969 album Walking in Space. In the late 1960s he recorded several Rhythm and blues records with members of The Crusaders, co-produced by Stewart Levine. In 1969 he released the single "It's Private Tonight" on the Motown-distributed Chisa Records label. He then joined Bob Krasnow's Blue Thumb Records, and released his 1972 debut album, It's Private Tonight.

Beaman was originally commissioned as an ensign in May 1974 and following designation as a Naval Flight Officer flew in the F-4J Phantom II with Fighter Squadron (VF) 121 at NAS Miramar, California before transferring to VF-124 and transitioning to the F-14A Tomcat in 1976. His sea assignments include VF-32 (1976–79), and VF-33 (1986–88), embarked aboard USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), USS America (CV-66) in support of Operation El Dorado Canyon, and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). During Operation Desert Storm, he served as officer in charge of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) Detachment in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and flew combat missions from the Persian Gulf. He commanded the VF-211 Fighting Checkmates (1995–96) aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68). He was the assistant chief of staff for operations for commander, Carrier Group 7 (1998–99), and he assumed command of Carrier Air Wing 2 (2000–01) aboard USS Constellation (CV-64) in support of Operation Southern Watch.
